In recent years, there has been a strong growth in the market of gallon water bottles, both in Italy and worldwide. Dispensers showed a positive trend, apart from the temporary setback caused by the Covid-19, mainly involving offices, factories, warehouses and various communities. The success of gallon bottles, in particular those of reusable PET or PC bottles, obviously involves the need to guarantee the safety of water, and consequently the cleaning of containers and dispensers. Which must be accurately and periodically sanitized. The water used to fill the gallon bottles, which can be natural spring water or water from other sources, must comply with the quality parameters defined in Community legislation on water intended for human consumption. Used empty gallon bottles, if still intact, can be reused. But before being inserted in a new filling cycle, they must be inspected for integrity, absence of discoloration and possible odours. After that, they must be washed with water and specific detergents and rinsed thoroughly with special machines. Like those built by Akomag, for example, an Italian company specialized in the design and production of machines and plants for the bottling industry. Washing, rinsing, filling, capping

The Monobloc washer for gallon bottles Sira has been designed by Akomag for washing and sterilizing PET or PC gallon bottles or other bottles of various sizes, to be filled with still water. The washing cycle adapts to the various production needs of the end customer and is very effective. For this machine Akomag has designed and produced a special spraying and brushing device for gallon bottles that ensures total cleanliness. Through the use of special mobile nozzles furniture (penetrating and rotating), the machine washes the bottle internally at high pressure (5 bar). While the outside is brushed by means of nylon brushes. The machine can be quickly adapted to the different bottle formats by simply setting the type of container to be handled on the control keyboard. The stainless steel control board installed next to the monobloc is easily accessible for the operator. The panel is equipped with a touch-screen for the complete management of all line functions, and the display of operating parameters and alarms.

The Monobloc features an automatic de-capper in stainless steel: a pneumatic system grips the bottle neck while ejecting the cap. The system is safe, but it can be equipped with a system for the selection and ejection of gallon bottles that have not been properly de-capped. The bottles are then filled by means of special inverter- controlled pumps.

A valve designed by Akomag guarantees a laminar flow and no contact between the valve and the bottle. The filling is carried out by means of a special metering device that ensures extreme filling accuracy. The capper consists of soundproof vibrating hopper, a descent channel, and a tear-off pick-up head.

The closure of the bottle is guaranteed by an inclined pressure belt characterized with adjustable pressure. All adjustments are automatic and managed from the control panel.

Purification and contamination control in the beverage and food industries

The beverage and food industry is constantly evolving, even in terms of the supply of raw materials and used filtration materials. Thus, it is necessary to devise more sustainable and efficient methods that can be developed in full collaboration between the client and the supplier.

BEA Technologies SpA has been a company that deals with filtration and purification of liquids and compressed gases acting exactly towards this direction, to ensure high-purity fluids to its customers for over sixty years.

Since day one BEA Technologies has increasingly specialized in the production of filtration elements for critical applications. Thus, reaching a high level of excellence with the BEAPURE line of– “animal-free” filters. “Animal-free” and HALAL certified filter elements

The products of the “BEAPURE” line are entirely free from animal-derived derivatives. Furthermore, thanks to the use of polymer products, polypropylene, polyester, and Nylon 66, these products are specifically

selected and elaborated even for the pharmaceutical use.

These products are also available with HALAL certification to ensure the exportation of beverages where this requirement is requested.

For the future, the company’s President Roberto Bea has planned a significative investment to double the cleanroom production area.

BEA Technologies’s goal is to assert itself as a selected supplier of filters and high performing filter elements at a European and global level. A goal partly achieved already, considering the fact that BEA Technologies SpA has developed an international distribution network in Europe, America and Asia.

Filtration for beverage production

It is really important today to use best filtration systems to stabilize the beverages’ microbiology, in order to maintain the main characteristics and properties unchanged and at the same time to ensure the removal of suspensions, colloidal particles and all other unwanted microganisms, to guarantee improved bottle preservation.

Thanks to the combination of different layers and final membranes, it can eliminate all microorganisms that may contaminate the product during the production process, especially bacteria that might be in the make-up water or water used for cleaning equipment.

Preserving the composition of beverages during production and storage requires the use of special filtration technologies that prevent changes in the composition and ensure the preservation of substances and all their characteristics.

In comparison with hot stabilization (pasteurization), cold biological stabilization achieved through membrane filtration is capable to ensure the elimination of bacteria without the addition of chemical substances, while fully preserving the most valued organoleptic characteristics of the product.

This crucial operation must be performed prior to bottling.

Some processes require that beverages are previously subjected to clarification: decanting, spontaneous sedimentation, centrifugation, filtration with filter aids. After that we move on to a treatment implemented to achieve visual clarity, which consists in retaining all those small particles that can cause residual turbidity.

Excellent results, in this procedure, have been achieved by using filtrating elements called “TOPLIFE and POLEX”. Tubular filters with high storage capacity, and constant particle retention.

Polishing is a procedure that, in addition to beverages, is also applied to sugar syrups commonly used in the preparation of soft drinks, both carbonated and noncarbonated. In this case, a two-stage filtration process is implemented. The first stage consists of filter elements made of S.S.

BEVERAGE INDUSTRY 16 EASTERN EUROPE EDITION
BEA Technologies Spa

316 stainless steel mesh, with a filtration with a filtration rating from 50 to 100 microns to capture large undissolved sugar particles.

The second stage utilizes filter elements from the “TOPLIFE, POLIVERSE, or POLEX”, series with a filtration rating of 10 or 20 microns to capture fine particles. At this point, the sugar solution is ready to be added to water.

After polishing, which eliminates any particulate contamination, the drinks are ready for “cold stabilization”, in which a reduction of the residual bacterial concentration is achieved.

This process is carried out through two stages:

in the first, the product is sent on a pre-filter containing the filtering elements “NOVATRAK”, made of polypropylene nanofibers, with a filtration rating of 0.5 - 1 micron; in the second stage, the pre-filtered drink, enters the housings with the PES membrane filter elements “BIOKLARIS – BCM”, which are installed before the filling machine for bottling. In this moment of great attention to health, BEA Technologies, being a company operating in this sector, is able to provide not only products for polishing, and clarification of wine and beverages, but also for procedures for cleaning and sterilization of membrane filter elements.

Each clarification and filtration system must be designed to be adapted to the production plant and product specifications.

BEA Technologies has designed and manufactured “tailor made” filtration systems for many various type of food plants.

Some examples are:

• A “MAGNEX”, which for the exclusive configuration of the filter material offers up to 9.5 sqm of useful surface area, suggested when the amount of contaminant to be retained is high;

• B the filter element “NOVATRAK” made of Nanofiber repeatedly regenerable and able to replace filter-aids;

• C the filter element “POLYVERSE”, ideal for the filtration of sugar syrups added to soft drinks, which can be regenerated several times in reverse flow to increase production yield, reducing the cost/ litre;

• D the filter element “POLYVER” for high quality beverages, where all typical flavours must be preserved,

All these filters have been carefully designed to solve the problems relative to the specific application and give the best result in performance.

BEA Technologies offers to the interested companies its laboratory composed by specialized technicians and its experience to evaluate, case by case, a concrete proposal of BEA Technologies.

Among the prerogatives to which Roberto Bea is not willing to give up, there is no doubt that there is the one of paying attention to ecological issues. This is why he focuses heavily on the creation of innovative

filtration systems, able to minimize energy consumption, as well as the waste resulting from industrial production.

In this context, the use of automatic, selfcleaning, and regenerable filtration systems is implemented. This allows BEA Technologies SpA to minimize any form of environmental impact by reducing the disposal of exhausted filtering elements in accordance with the requirements of sustainability required from food companies.

MAGNEXFLO filtration systems in operation at beverage manufacturers

BEA Technologies offers a new series of automatic filtration systems called “MAGNEXFLO” that provide high performance for a complete range of flow rates and applications.

These types are automatic filtration systems equipped with large filtering surfaces, which are highly effective for both solid particle separation and bioburden reduction. This filtration system enables the repeated regeneration of installed filter elements, allowing them to be fully reused rather than being destined for disposal.

Finpac Sleeve: The queen of lowand high-speed labellers

“Labels? Forget the labels! If anything, we are talking about fine dresses since we cooperate with the most renowned world brands in the bottling sector. I’ll tell you more, the image we are coining for this type of material is of a dressmaker about to design – thanks to the use of sleeve – tailored dresses.”

Finpac Sleeve General Manager, Erik Granzon has a clear view. Frankly speaking, this image he describes of a dressmaker suggests a label-container combination, like tailoring. All that thanks to sleeve labelling of both low- and high-speed machines.

Erik Granzon is optimistic (as any manager should be), a visionary man as we will discover soon, and just like the great monarchs of the past who were also the Defenders of Faith, he as a contemporary man is also a Defender of the Environment because he strongly believes in and is committed to sustainability. He immediately tells us his definition of Finpac Sleeve products “We dress these wonderful products with a multifunctional material that, at the same time, gives an important sense of lightness.”

That is the history and goals of Erik Granzon, General Manger, and Ilaria Zilio, CEO of

Finpac Sleeve, told by themselves through simple albeit important questions.

Let’s start from the beginning with Ilaria Zilio. Once upon a time...

Once upon a time there was Finpac, and still there is. Established 35 years ago by two members, now old people, who passed over me the honour of running this wonderful business reality, high-speed labelling machines. The brands that use this system have always aroused my attention and fascinated, too. I wanted to be a diplomat or a psychologist, but I dared not tell my father and then thought “why now, let’s try”. Sooner, I fell for these machines and was thrilled to create and develop my own projects.”

Woman, and charismatic. All easy since the beginning?

On the contrary. The beginning was very demanding, as it is today, in a sector that is mainly for men. I was young and unexpert. There were judgements and prejudices about me, and I had to instantly prove my capacity more than others. In the company, I had to grow not only professionally but also personally, as to arrive where I am now.

Basing on your experience, would you prefer to work with men or women?

I believe that the best work environment needs a balance of women and men. Every person is different, and therefore generalizing is a mistake. I believe that male and female peculiarities can team and improve analytical skills, for a higher attention to details, with the goal of increasing corporate performance.

Is there some advice you would have liked to follow and that you didn’t?

Looking back to my path today may generate different decisions, but I am sure that my entire path, especially the most negative and

difficult aspects of it, have contributed to making me the woman and the professional I am today, and ready for future challenges.

Erik Granzon has been appointed as General Manager of Finpac Sleeve by dr. Zilio to broaden the presence and success in the packaging market. How should a figure like yours be to establish a relationship with collaborators?

As far as I am concerned, I have always accepted different challenges and that has led me, not without efforts and commitment, to that level of professionalism that characterizes me.

Allow me some advice, I think that we need to be real and coherent to lead as per our values. It is crucial to create commitment and planning ability to generate a new version, to generate enthusiasm and passion necessary so that every collaborator is part of the project with the right trust and freedom. Always looking for new ideas. What’s your secret?

As it often happens in life, when your goal is your professional growth, some inspirations are generated even when you stop for a while, not only when you analyse your sector but also when you look at other markets. My own experience gained in events thanks to the precious support of international staff has driven me to accept this new challenge in the world of packaging, even though we are talking about two totally different worlds, in terms of technology and innovation.

Erik Granzon, General Manager Finpac Sleeve
BEVERAGE INDUSTRY 22 EASTERN EUROPE EDITION
Ilaria Zilio and Erik Granzon, CEO and General Manager - Finpac Sleeve

Then I thought that in life we need some madness. Don’t you agree?

The world of packaging opens endless new frontiers

Today, Finpac Sleeve is present in 130 countries across the globe, and therefore its present goal is entering different distribution channels by creating personalized and exclusive solutions through our machinery. That’s why we have thought of launching a low-speed machine that combines technological know-how and nobility of the sleeve with designer’s creativity. The idea is entering the world of low outputs (i.e. wine, beer) because we know that the demand of fine products is high.

One of our goals is bringing wellness and beauty to the world of packaging.

You started with high-speed machine and have been highly innovating. Who has envisaged this path?

I think that one of the most appealing aspects that made me love Finpac Sleeve may be the possibility of creating innovative designs that – combining with our product – generate elegant containers while keeping the technical features unaltered.

Finpac Sleeve Srl

In our history there has always been great attention to sustainability. Now, it is a trend Attaching sustainability to ephemeral fads has always made me smile. You can’t think about sustainable economy without acting for the environment.

In conclusion… constantly growing. Which are your next projects and events in the world of packaging?

I thought you would ask this question and I hope you wouldn’t mind my looking back at our projects and answer that we are working on it. As regards our events in the world of packaging, we want to keep up and continue our development. To this regard, I can also say that we are completing customer-focused projects to meet beverage requirements.

Open House Beverage Division

Finpac Sleeve opens its doors to show the world its latest process and packaging technologies, from small to high speeds. Finpac Sleeve premises will house a wide selection of machinery and machines developed to meet the requirements of the beverage industry: From big multinationals to small-size workshops, and suppliers who will be able to see firsthand the technology purposely designed to satisfy the entire production cycle of a product.

The company was established in Milan in 1949, under the name of Mida, by the chemical engineer Erminio Paronitti. It was acquired by Giorgio Pozzi in 1985. In 1988, the company moved to its current headquarters in Cornegliano Laudense (Lodi) where, since 2007, it has been focusing exclusively on subcontracting, offering multiple proposals that represent both tradition and innovation in the field of wear-resistant, anti-corrosive and anti-stick coatings: flash hard chrome, hard chrome

plating, DLC (Diamond Like Carbon), “antisticking” silicon oxide. These treatments are applied to parts in steel, stainless steel, aluminium, brass, and copper intended for use, above all, in plastic moulding sectors, the food industry, precision mechanics, packaging and pharmaceuticals.

“Anti-sticking” silicon oxide, economical and technically advanced compared to traditional fluoropolymer treatments, is a permanent hydrophobic coating that drastically reduces surface wettability and sticking.

5 treatments for 1,000 applications

Every Techno Mida treatment has very distinct characteristics and, in some cases, the key to success is to combine them to create a double coating in which the second makes up for what the first is lacking, a possible “marriage” between flash hard chrome or hard chrome plating and DLC, flash hard chrome or hard chromium plating

and silicon oxide, and Flash hard chrome and anti-sticking silicon oxide.

DLC is the harder, hard chrome the thicker, and silicon oxide the more anti sticking

• Flash hard chrome: deposition temperature: 65°C; layer thickness: 1° 10 µm; hardness: 1200 Vickers

• Hard chrome plating: deposition temperature: 65°C; layer thickness: from 0.01 mm to several tenths of a millimetre; hardness: 68 Rockwell.

• DLC: deposition temperature: 120°C; layer thickness: from 2.5 to 4 µm; hardness: 2500 Vickers.

• Silicon oxide (SiOx): deposition temperature: 60-100°C; layer thickness: from 0.5 to 4 µm; hardness: 400-500 Vickers.

• Anti-sticking silicon oxide: deposition temperature: 80-120°C; layer thickness: from 0.5 to 4 µm; hardness: 1200 Vickers.

All the treatments by Techno Mida are direct contact food grade coatings.
