Dear Members and Apprentices, Congratulations to the Southwest Section PGA members that recently participated in the Professional National Championship held in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Craig Hocknull, Chirs Endres and Brent Newcomb competed the first two days, Brandon Smith made the 36 hole cut of top 90 and ties—but fell short of the top 70 and ties threshold for day 3. Playing all four days were Ben Weir (T55), Marty Jertson (T73) and Ben Kreger (T75). It was great to have “7” SWSPGA players compete in the event---however we left several quality players at home that have the ability to compete at that level. As many of you may know, the number of players that participate in our local PNC determines the number of players we are able to send to the National Event. With the event being held at the historic Philadelphia Cricket Club in 2015 (http://www.pga.com/news/pga/15-pnc-heading-historic-philadelphia-cricket-club) I would like to encourage you to participate in this years’ qualifier being held at Troon North’s Monument Golf Course (Registration due by July 8th at 2pm) and for the Seniors at Firerock Country Club in Fountain Hills, AZ. (Registration Due by July 15th at 2pm). Youth Sports Background Checks The PGA of America Board of Directors recently approved a policy that will require background checks for PGA Professionals and Volunteers who work with juniors. The roll-out (which is outlined in this monthly update and will be posted on the SWSPGA Website when finalized) will start with Section staff and PGA members and expand from there. Background screening will be provided by First Advantage through an on-line process at a cost of less than $6.00 per individual. Drive Chip and Putt Special thanks to Tucson Country Club, Lone Tree Golf Club, Vistal Golf Club and Stallion Mountain Golf Club for their efforts in conducting local Drive Chip and Putt Events during the month of June. Antelope Hills will host the final local Drive Chip and Putt in July and the sub-regional will be held at Grayhawk Golf Club in August. We have had several inquiries about hosting a local Drive Chip and Putt event in 2015. Accordingly, the SWSPGA will create a process for facilities to submit a proposal/request to host a local competition next year. This process will take place in the late Fall and early Spring so that the sites will be available for registration immediately following the Drive Chip and Putt Finals held at Augusta National on April 5, 2015. Metro Chapter and Board Retreat The SWSPGA Board will be having a retreat/planning session on July 11th and 12th. Topics will include committee activities, national initiatives, the golf market in our Section and the roll-out of the Metro Chapter Activities. If you have thoughts or ides that you feel we should address at this meeting please feel free to forward them to us for review. Respectfully, Curt Hudek, PGA Executive Director

Rules of Golf

Possible Incident! – June 16, 2014 – The Ruling Hole #5 at the US Open is a Par-5 576-yard very challenging hole. After Player A’s second shot from the fairway, Player A’s ball lies on the back of the 5th green about 15 feet from the hole. The hole location is toward the back left with the green sloping back to front. There is a sandy area and a bunker short left of the green. Player A putts; the ball rolls towards the hole picks up speed and rolls off the green into the bunker. Player A asks his caddie for another ball, places the ball where his first putt was played and completes the hole in two additional strokes. What was player A’s score for hole #5? **Player A scored 6 on hole #5. Player A lay 3 in the bunker and played his next stroke from the putting green under penalty of stroke and distance, Rule 27-1a. The final putt was for a 6. See Rule 27-1a and Rule 20-5.
