Executive Director Dear Members and Apprentices, Sean Ferris back to Southwest Section PGA It is with great enthusiasm that we announce that Sean Ferris, PGA has agreed to once again be a part of the Southwest Section PGA Staff. While Sean’s main focus for the next few months will center around the 2015 golf pass launch; we are extremely excited about the programs he and Mike Bergman will be working on related to online efforts involving golf instruction and junior golf. Look for more details in the coming weeks and months to learn how as an instructor you will be featured and how as a facility you can promote your junior golf programs and playing opportunities. Section PNC Congratulations to the Southwest Section PGA members that recently qualified for the Professional National Championship held at Troon North’s Monument Golf Course. The venue proved to be a great test and the following players have earned a spot in the field at the historic Philadelphia Cricket Club in 2015. (See more at http://www.pga.com/news/pga/15-pnc-heading-historic-philadelphiacricket-club ) Qualifiers: 1st Paul Trittler Tie 2nd Marty Jertson, Bobby Pancratz, Chris Dompier, Jon Stanley and Brandon Evans Paul Trittler earned the title with a three day total of 10 under par, while the remaining qualifiers all posted a three day total of 7 under par. There remains spot up for grabs in the PNC—which goes to the SWSPGA Player of the year----which will be determined following the Section Championship and the Shriners Hospital for Children’s Open events this fall. Please check the website for the individuals that are not on the list above, but vying for the final invitation. Drive Chip and Putt The final local qualifier was held at Antelope Hills Golf Club in conjunction the Antigua Junior Tour Championship. The qualifiers from this local Drive Chip and Putt, along with the others conducted in Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico traveled to Grayhawk Golf Club on Sunday August 25th to compete in the Sub-Regional event. Special thanks to Bob Doyle, Tracy Hail and the staff at Grayhawk for playing host to this well run event. More than 160 aspiring golfers from the ages of 7 to 15 competed for 16 invitations to the regional event in Park City, Utah which will be the final hurdle before Augusta next April. Local qualifiers from this sub-regional can be seen at http:// www.drivechipandputt.com/qualifying-results/ PGA Certification Program Incentive and Reimbursements Enclosed in this document you will find an application for the Certified Professional Program Reimbursement. Executive Director MSR Cycle ends 06/15/2015 Credit requirements will consist of two categories: (a) 54 Total Credits, (b) 36 of which must be from PGA Meeting/PGA Education and/or Golf 2.0/Player Development. (54) Total Credits (a) Total Credits (54): A total of 54 credits must be earned, with at least 36 credits earned from the required category (PGA Meeting/PGA Education/Golf 2.0/Player Development), while the other means of obtaining credits toward the total requirement remain per the prior program. All credits for any category must be earned via activities that allow for automated crediting through PGA systems to streamline the administration of the Professional Development Program.

(36) Required MSR Points (b) PGA Meeting/PGA Education: The credit category for Meetings and PGAdelivered education (Chapter, Section, National) are now combined and all will be awarded one (1) credit per hour of participation. Other education provided by sources outside of The PGA will apply to the Total. This means that any gathering of members organized by a Section/Chapter or National, whether for governance, education, or both will be treated the same way. Therefore, a Section meeting that had three hours of business meeting and two hours of education that would have been credited six Meeting credits and two Education credits in the previous cycle will now be worth 5 PGA Meeting/PGA Education credits in the current proposal. (b) Golf 2.0/Player Development: The credits for Golf 2.0/Player Development will be earned via the reporting of actual creation, activation and engagement of golfers into programming that supports Golf 2.0 initiatives and/or education and training on the strategic plan, its initiatives, and related program administration. Thus both green grass and non-green grass or executive level PGA members can meet the requirement by becoming knowledgeable about Golf 2.0, its strategic initiatives, and its programs.

If you have any question as to where you stand with your MSR Requirements please contact Mike Burhans, PGA at the Section office 480-443-9002 or by e-mail at mburhans@pgahq.com.

Executive Director From Drew Billow at the 500 Club golf course. Over the past week, we have had 3 sets of customer’s golf clubs stolen from our facility. The subject seems to scope out the area and grab any random set of clubs. We have good video of the thief and are working with Phoenix PD to track this person down. However, we do not have a license plate number. Attached is the photo of the vehicle leaving our parking lot with the stolen golf clubs. The person of interest was identified as a white male aged 20s- 30s with a beard, golf shorts, golf shirt, hat, and sunglasses and about 5'10 - 6ft tall. The vehicle is a white four door Toyota Sequila SUV with gold trim. Please be aware and let us know if you have any issues concerning the same matter.

Metro Chapter While the idea of a Metro Chapter has been discussed at some length among the Board for the last eighteen months—details have not been communicated with the membership. The following will help bring you up to date with the goals and objectives of this evolving concept and highlight some of the activities planned for the coming year. Why a Metro Chapter? Primarily to create additional opportunities for members to play, participate in governance, conduct local education and charitable outreach, support professionals earning PGA Certifications and networking. Who is a member of the Metro Chapter? Currently, all those not part of the Southern Chapter or the Southern Nevada Chapter. With the addition of this Chapter there has been some discussion of creating a Northern Arizona Chapter which will be reviewed by the board in the coming months. Will the Metro Chapter have Chapter Coordinator? No. Currently all activities will be conducted by the Chapter Officers and Committee Chairs. The Section staff will provide support in the form of accounting and promotion, but will not have staff members assigned to these activities. Is there an additional “cost” to be a member of the Metro Chapter? Yes and No. The Metro Chapter intends to have an optional $100 Participation/Tournament Membership Fee and an 8 hour charitable service requirement. In return participants will have first right to the limited field tournament and education events, be afforded a reduced tournament entry fee, have an opportunity to receive partial up-front funds for pursuit of a PGA Certification and hold a position on the Chapter Board/ Committee. All other Metro/Southern/Southern Nevada Chapter members will be allowed to participate in Metro Chapter events on a space available basis. How do I submit my 8 hours of Charitable Service? You may submit your 8 hours of Charitable Service to any member or chair of the Metro Chapter as listed below. This service must be provided prior to the annual Metro Chapter Championship. You may submit this on the MSR Reporting form found in the left hand column of the home page of the SWSPGA website at www.southwest.pga.com . What will this Participation/Tournament Membership fee be used for? See details in the summary below. How do I submit my Participation/Tournament Membership Fee? This registration is available at the Section Website in the Tournament tab. It is currently listed as a June 20, 2014 Event. Metro Chapter Tournament Events are listed within the playing opportunities on the SWSPGA website.

Rules of Golf Match-Play Scoring – August 9, 2014 - Scores for Holes In many match-play competitions, scores for each hole are announced by the referee and/or recorded on the scoreboard. For this exercise, we will follow the guidelines for scoring in the 2014 USGA amateur match-play championships for holes where a stroke or hole is conceded or a player incurs a loss-of-hole penalty. Single Match Play – Player A vs Player B Player A lies 2 on the putting green about 40 feet from the hole. Player B lies 3 in deep rough near the putting green Player B concedes Player A’s next stroke or the hole. Player A _3_ Player B _4_ **Each player adds one stroke to his/her score. On a long par-5 hole, Player A lies 2 in the fairway. Player B lies 2 in a bunker. Player B, prior to playing a stroke in the bunker, removes a loose impediment near his ball in the bunker. The referee informs Player B that he has lost the hole. Player A _3_ Player B _X_ **For the player who loses the hole the score is reported as X and the winner of the hole adds one stroke. On a long par-5 hole, Player A lies 2 on the putting green. Player B lies 2 in the deep prairie grass behind the putting green. Player B concedes the hole. Player A _3_ Player B _X_ **When both players have the same score and one player concedes the hole, the score for the player who concedes the hole is reported as X and the winner of the hole adds one stroke. Player A lies 2 on the putting green near the hole. Player B’s second shot is in the pond marked as a water hazard near the putting green. Player B concedes the hole. Player A _3_ Player B _4_ **When both players have the same score and the player conceding the hole would require a penalty prior to play of the next stroke, a penalty stroke is added to that player prior to adding one stroke to each score.

Southwest Section PGA

Rules of Golf Any Penalties? – August 4, 2014 – The Rulings Stroke Play: Player A and caddie, Max, are searching for Player A’s ball in an area of tall grass. After about 2 minutes of search, Max spots the ball deep in the grass in an unplayable location, picks up the ball and calls out to Player A, “I found your ball. You better take an unplayable”. Player A makes an estimate of where the original ball lay, drops a substituted ball on the “flag-line” and continues play of the hole. **Player A incurred a one-stroke penalty under Rule 28b and an additional penalty for a breach of Rule 18-2a. Max is permitted to provide Player A with advice regarding procedures or play of a stroke but is only permitted to lift the ball in play if authorized by Player A (see Rule 20-1 and Decision 182a/15). As noted in Decision 18-2a/15, Player A is not required to replace the ball when proceeding under and Rule 28 options and may estimate the original location when proceeding under the “b” or “c” options. (Also, see Decision 20-3a/3.) Player B and Player C, a fellow-competitor, are searching for Player B’s ball in an area of tall grass. After about 2 minutes of search, Player C spots the ball deep in the grass in an unplayable location, picks up the ball and calls out to Player B, “I found your ball. You better take an unplayable”. Player B makes an estimate of where the original ball lay, drops a substituted ball on the “flag-line” and continues play of the hole. **Player B incurred a one-stroke penalty under Rule 28b. Player B’s procedure was correct (see Decision 20-3a/3). Player C incurred a penalty of two strokes for a breach of Rule 8-1 (see Decision 8-1/16). Player C, an outside agency (see Definition of “Outside Agency” is not penalized for lifting Player B’s ball in play (see Rule 18-1 and Rule 18-4).

Junior Golf Tournament/Event Update: This year the Antigua Junior Tour went fantastic beating participation levels from 2013 by 25%! Every district had increased participation compared to 2013. We wrapped up the season with our tour championship in Prescott and had 130 of the SWSPGA’s best junior golfers compete in a 36 hole championship. Overall the tour was an overwhelming success and we look forward to next year. Next the Oakley Pro-Junior was a fantastic success as well. Kirk Schultz, with Oakley, is one of the best supporters of junior golf as well as a huge supporter of the Southwest Section PGA. With his sponsorship, a fantastic host facility, and a great group of professionals that gave their time to these juniors we couldn’t have asked for a better event. As this event has become a staple on the junior schedule we will seek to continue to find a great venue each year to add diversity to this event. Lastly on Saturday August 16th the Southwest Section, JGAA and the Raven Golf Club held the annual High School Coaches Clinic. There were 55 coaches that attended and several guest speakers that assisted with this informational clinic. The event turned out to be a great time and all of the coaches were very engaged and excited for the 2014 high school golf season!
