I am not at home! We are aware that many of you have very busy lives and are out and about. We are delighted about this. If, however, you have any SWCC services scheduled, please ensure that you are at home.

If, for any reason, you will not be at home, please advise us at least 24 hours in advance. When a care worker arrives to complete a scheduled service for you and you are not at home, this can cause some concern for your well being. In this case the care worker:  will knock and call out loudly  do a check of the boundaries of the property and with neighbours  call the team leader who will attempt to contact you or your emergency contacts  If there is no response and we are unable to contact you, emergency services will be called to assist ie a call to the police. Please consider doing the following so that we can support you in the event of an emergency: 

Providing us up to date information of Next of Kin, emergency contacts and changes to numbers in order for us to have the most up to date information on your records

Safe storage of a spare key and location of key advised to emergency contact.

Putting in a coded key box with a spare key and informing emergency contact of the code.

A key held by an emergency contact such as a family member, neighbour or friend as nominated by yourself. www.swcommunitycare.org.au

Men’s Shed– Harvey

Harvey Men’s Shed members ventured out on the 17th March to the Bunbury Geographe Motor Museum (BGMM). After assembling at the shed we headed out at about 9.30am, calling in at Brunswick on the way to collect Wally. We had guessed we would be at the museum for just over an hour but misjudged the quality and number of exhibits and also the level of interest shown by the men. The main attraction seemed to be the large collection of vintage motor bikes. There were many comments about the different bikes on show and some of the boys reminiscing that they had ridden 6

one like it in their younger days. Also it transpires that two of the boys actually rode sidecar at Claremont speedway with a lot of interest in one exhibit similar to one they had ridden. I guess we should never be surprised at the amount of knowledge accumulated by our consumers over the years as the staff at the museum found out when they were able to have some facts about different exhibits clarified by the men. The time passed quickly and it was a struggle to get everyone to leave the museum and head for the Happy Dim Sim Chinese restaurant for lunch. Due to the level of interest we have pencilled in another visit to the museum later this year when the exhibits have changed—which happens a couple of times each year. All in all a great day out enjoyed by everyone.

Your Story

Jan Price Jan lived in Capel for more than fifty years and recalls get togethers at the Capel Community Centre where the girls lined up along one wall and the boys the other, with the idea being that the boys were to invite the girls to dance. As this seldom happened, Jan said the girls used to dance together and that is where her love for dancing was born—alone, with a partner, with other ladies or now with her walker – dancing brings Jan much joy. Jan enjoys music and dancing at the centre with her friends and is forever tapping her feet when the music is playing, no matter where she is! Jan has two children. Stephen in Broome, and Sue in Capel. Jan travels up to Broome annually with Sue to visit the family there. As a young woman, Jan worked hard as a cleaner at Guilford Grammar and often had to serve teas to the young students after their rowing races. Jan worked in the laundry and had to push sheets manually through the wringers, which she remembers as hard labour! Jan moved to work on a large sheep station, north of Perth for several years. As it was so remote, she would order her clothing through 10

the mail and hope that everything would fit her. Online shopping well in advance! Her ancestors include a shipwright and prominent business man from Bunbury. Jan is an avid Eagles fan, the Eagles scarf being regular apparel during the AFL season. She has, however, never attended a live match to see her team in action! Jan travelled to Singapore and was so impressed with how lovely and clean it was. “ The people were friendly but not as lucky as those in Australia, as the elderly seem to have to work hard until late in life!” A passionate animal lover, Jan has adopted stray dogs and cats throughout her life. Jan has never driven a car and always used to travel along on a push bike. She is very happy to have SWCC transport to assist her with her transport needs. Fortnightly domestic assistance from our SWCC care workers relieves Jan of the heavier domestic duties in her home. “ Jasmine makes me a lovely cuppa!” The Eaton Social Centre days play an important part in Jan’s days as she enjoys the activities, teas and lunches, the friendships and the opportunity to enjoy music and occasionally dance the morning away!
