a note from our managing editor

Holiday Magic are finally here and by now, most of us are up to our necks in lists, wrapping paper, decorations, and (hopefully) a lot of delicious baked treats. For many, the holidays bring more than just Christmas cheer, they also bring endless to-do lists and calendars filled to the brim. It’s times like these that we need to give ourselves a little grace and remember to be present in the moment so we don’t miss the holiday magic. Even with all the hullabaloo, the holidays truly are the most wonderful time of the year, so let’s celebrate that! This year, we’re celebrating 25 Days of Christmas on p. 16, where we’ve offered a number of ways to make the most of the season. Whether it’s by attending a beloved annual event like Suwanee’s Jolly Holly Day or by taking part in more low-key traditions like writing a letter to Santa or putting up the Christmas tree, there are many ways to get into the holiday spirit both at home and around town. In fact, one of the best ways to spread holiday cheer is by giving back to those in need. On p. 46, we’ve listed seven amazing local nonprofits who help to support the community through food drives, sponsorships and more. If you’re still in need of a few gifts for those special people on your list, flip to our annual Holiday Gift Guide on p. 38 for gift ideas and exclusive deals from local businesses to help make your holiday shopping easier. From fashion and accessories and health and wellness items to gift cards to local restaurants, you’re sure to find something for everyone. HE HOLIDAYS

Do you have travel plans for the holidays? Be sure to make accommodations for your precious pup or cat now! PetSuites in Johns Creek offers highquality pet daycare and boarding facilities that will happily serve as your pet’s home away from home while you’re away. Turn to p. 10 to read more about PetSuites’ accommodations as well as four holiday boarding tips to make sure your trip runs smoothly. While Christmas may take center stage during the holidays, it’s important to not forget about Thanksgiving, a time filled with family, good food, and for many, football. And while the family gatherings and turkeys, pies, and casseroles are fun, Thanksgiving is also a time to reflect on all we are thankful for. This year, we asked readers to share what they’re most thankful for — and you did not disappoint! From good friends and supportive spouses to local businesses, we compiled a reader-submitted gratitude list on p. 50. Let’s end on a sweet note, shall we? We recently had the chance to learn all about Suwanee’s newest donut shop, Mochinut, and its delicious mochi donuts, a unique combination of American donuts and Japanese mochi. Since opening in July, Mochinut has been satisfying the sweet tooth of locals with its rotating selection of mochi donuts (try the matcha donut!) along with Korean corn dogs and boba tea. Learn more on p. 55. As we round out the year with celebrations and gifts and a whole lot of fun, we wanted to take a moment to thank all of you, our readers and our advertisers, for supporting us all of these years. Suwanee Magazine wouldn’t be what it is without you and we look forward to another year of covering our wonderful community. Happy holidays!

INVESTMENT S T R AT E G I E S BY: Bill and Cindi Porter, AILERON INVESTMENT ADVISORS

Q: WHICH TYPE OF STOCK IS BETTER, GROWTH OR VALUE?

It really depends upon you and your investment temperament. Value stocks are potentially lowpriced “bargains.” The price of these stocks might be depressed because its industry is down, interest rates, inflation, or other factors that are not directly related to that company. These stocks typically pay high dividends. Some investors prefer owning a lower-priced stock feeling that it may have less room to fall if the general markets experience a downturn. Warren Buffet is a consistent buyer of value stocks.(1) `Growth stocks are just the opposite of value stocks. Their stock price would be considered pricey. They typically pay low or no dividends. Looking to invest in the next Google, Tesla, or Microsoft, a growth investor is willing to “go big or go home” to possibly reap large rewards. Value stocks may be a bargain or a bust. Growth stocks may make it big or disappear. There is a very important nuance to this discussion: asset classes of the market. The Russell 1000 Growth index includes primarily larger companies. The Russell 1000 Value index is also comprised of larger sized companies. Each index is a composite of 1000 large companies that fall into either a “growth” or “value” category. Similarly, there is also a separate Russell 2000 index for both value and growth. However, these two indices each contain 2,000 smaller companies. Since the late 1970s when these four indices were created, the growth and value results varied significantly depending on the size of the companies. The Russell 1000 Growth index has outperformed the Russell 1000 Value index by nearly 3,000%. Conversely, the Russell 2000 Growth has lagged the Russell Value 2000 by over 2,000%.(2) ■ 1. https://www.longtermtrends.net/growth-stocks-vs-value-stocks/ 2. https://www.schwab.com/learn/story/growth-vs-value-what-does-it-mean

25 Days Of Christmas truly is the most wonderful time of the year.

We wait for months in anticipation of everything that makes the holidays so special, from the twinkling lights and decorations to the Santa-themed movies and gift-giving. Then suddenly, it’s over in the blink of an eye. In between the rush and busyness of the season, it can seem daunting to squeeze it all in. This year, let’s simplify things a bit. In addition to all of the fun events and activities, let's take joy in some of the quieter moments of the season, such as mailing your Christmas cards on time or enjoying that first cup of hot chocolate. In that spirit, we’ve offered 25 suggestions to help get the most out of the upcoming holiday magic. But, don’t feel pressure to complete them all. Just do the ones that work best for you and your family. Happy holidays! - By Alicia Carter -

DEC.

1

Make a holiday playlist.

The holidays are the perfect time to pull out all the cheesy, guilty-pleasure music we’d never listen to any other time of year. But, the secret to a great playlist is variety! So mix together the cheesy songs for the kids (“I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas” by Gayla Peevey or “The Chipmunk Song” by Alvin & The Chipmunks) with the classics (“A Holly Jolly Christmas” by Burl Ives or “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” by Brenda Lee) and then throw in some nontraditional songs for fun, like Bob Dylan’s rendition of “Must Be Santa” or “Let’s Make This Christmas Mean Something This Year” by James Brown. A thoughtful playlist with songs you and your family love will make those car rides or evenings at home even more merry as you count down to Christmas!

There will be crafts, food trucks, hot chocolate and s’mores. Friday, Dec. 2, 6:30 p.m. Town Center Park, 330 Town Center Ave. in Suwanee. For more information, visit Suwanee.com.

7

Make a holidaythemed cocktail.

De-stress from the holidays with a festive cocktail. A cranberry mimosa is a simple and refreshing drink to help get you into the holiday spirit. Simply grab your favorite chilled sparkling wine (Champagne or prosecco) and add your desired amount of cranberry juice, and voila! If you’re feeling fancy, serve it in a Champagne flute with a sugar-dipped rim and garnish with a sprig of fresh rosemary.

8

Plan a Christmas date.

Every year my husband and I plan a special Christmas date while the kids stay with their grandparents. It’s a time to enjoy each other’s company as we wrap up our Christmas shopping (well, most of it…) and go out to dinner at one of our favorite local restaurants. It’s important to slow down and have this time together since the holidays tend to go by in a blur. Some of our favorite places for our Christmas date night include Bare Bones Steakhouse in Buford, Bottles & Bones in Suwanee, and Falling Rabbit in Duluth. If you want something a little more low-key and extra festive, Over the Top Burger Bar in Buford is bringing back their Christmasthemed pop-up bar, Kringles, which is always a lot of fun.

DEC.

9

Make paper snowflakes to decorate your window.

This craft is a super easy and affordable addition to your Christmas decorations. Plus, it’s one the kids will love because they get to help make them! Simply gather together white paper, scissors and tape and get creative with your snowflake designs — after all, no two snowflakes are alike! When you’re finished, tape your designs to the inside of your front windows for a unique winter decoration that’s made with love.

DEC.

10

After checking out Lakeside Lights, be sure to visit Snow Island, Margaritaville’s Christmastime attraction that features tons of activities for the family, including winter-themed carnival rides, an ice-skating rink, snow play areas, fire pit s’mores, and more! The star of the island is the 575-foot-long, eight-story snow tubing hill, which is said to be the fastest in North America. Nov. 19-Feb. 26. Make “Reindeer Food” mix.

A good holiday-themed trail mix is an easy and quick way to get a hearty helping of snack food that pleases both kids and adults. “Reindeer Food,” also known as “Christmas Puppy Chow,” combines sweet and salty for the perfect nibbly food, and you probably already have most of the ingredients in your pantry. You’ll need chocolate, peanut butter, Chex cereal, butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla. You can jazz it up with the addition of sprinkles, M&Ms, mini Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, or any other candy of your choice. You can also mix pretzels with the cereal to add an extra crunch. If you have kids, put some to the side to leave out with Santa’s cookies for the reindeer.

• 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate • ¼ cup unsalted butter melted • ½ cup smooth peanut butter • 1 teaspoon vanilla • 9 cups Chex cereal • 1 ½ cups powdered sugar • Candy of your choice

DEC.

3. Pour the mixture over the cereal and stir well to combine. 4. Pour the powdered sugar into a large bag and add the cereal. Shake until well-combined. 5. Allow cereal to set in the fridge or freezer for a minute or two. This is when you can add any of your favorite candies (we suggest holiday colored M&Ms).

Bake cookies for Santa.

Creating Spaces for Lasting Memories

For us, Christmas Eve is a busy day, so we bake our Christmas cookies on Christmas Eve Eve. We make a batch of chocolate chip for munching and then a batch of sugar cookies that the kiddos decorate for Santa. While my baking skills aren’t the best, it really doesn’t matter. The kids will love helping to stir and pour, and of course they’ll love making a mess with the frosting and sprinkles. And when the holidays are over, these will be the memories you’ll cherish. Don’t have time to bake? Check out p. 33 for a list of local bakeries that have your Christmas cookies covered.

After you set out the cookies and milk for Santa, and before you tuck the little ones into bed (with visions of sugarplums dancing in their heads), take time to read the most magical Christmas story of all: 'Twas the Night Before Christmas. It’s a great holiday tradition that will get them even more excited for Santa — if that’s possible.

Whether that’s taking time to be thankful for this time of togetherness or reading the Nativity story about the true Christmas miracle, the season really is much more than gifts and cookies and decorations and it’s important to remember that throughout all of the commotion.

THE HOLIDAY ISSUE

DESPITE MY

adoration for all of the holidays and grand celebrations throughout the year, I must admit that I hold the deepest connection with Christmas. Every aspect of this season - including the completely predictable, yet debatably wonderful marathon of Hallmark movies - brings me so much joy and exhilaration. Perhaps it’s due to how Christmas was made so special in our home growing up, or maybe it’s just ingrained in my DNA. Either way, I’m especially excited for the holidays this year because it will be my baby boy’s FIRST Christmas! My handsome Harrison joined us back in April of this year, and I’m just exploding with anticipation to begin seeing Christmas through his eyes. Being the planner that I am… I’ve been brainstorming some traditions to initiate this year with my new family of three. After all, it’s within these moments and memories that make the holiday truly magical. So, if it’s also time for your family to adopt a new tradition, check out this compilation of my favorite ideas and decide which one fits your definition of Christmas the best! 

Christmas

Eve Box

NOTHING SAYS ‘bursting at the seams’ quite like

a child on Christmas Eve. They’re probably running wild, amped up on adrenaline and sugar cookies, and keeling over with curiosity from the neatly wrapped gifts under the tree that have been taunting them for days. Bedtime? Ha! Who could sleep at a time like this? Enter: the Christmas Eve Box. A gift the kiddos are allowed to open early… one that welcomes the opportunity to wind down and savor another moment before the big day. You can get as creative as you’d like, but I recommend including some new pajamas to wear that night, a new book to read together, and a late-night snack to share during storytime, such as popcorn. *Disclaimer: Unfortunately, I can’t promise this will help them sleep any better, therefore, please still be prepared for a possible way-too-early wakeup call.

Christmas light Scavenger Hunt SOME MIGHT squeal with excitement, some might

roll their eyes and sigh, but let’s face it - the family drive around town “ooo-ing” and “ahh-ing” at the most embellished and illuminated houses is a standard American tradition that will never cease. Some traditions, however, are deserving of a fresh twist (you know, just to make sure everyone’s fully engaged in what I like to call “forced family fun time,” wink wink). So this year, as you’re coasting through neighborhoods and pointing out the window, consider turning this family affair into a scavenger hunt. Head out with your list of all the spectacular ornamentation you’ll be searching for and let the races begin! A sample scavenger list could include an inflatable snowman, a manger scene, icicle lights, a projected scene, Rudolph, candy canes, and much more.

Secret gift Wrapping

YOU’VE BEEN there… hours upon hours are invested in

shopping, wrapping, topping with matching bows, and finalizing with a hand-written name tag… all to be ripped into shreds in a matter of minutes. Is it worth it to see the elated, smiling faces when they open their gifts? Of course! But, who's to say parents haven’t earned the right to bask in all of their efforts a little more? Ponder on the idea of this plot twist… DITCH the traditional name tags. You can enhance the suspense by leaving your children wondering not only what each gift is, but WHO each gift is meant for. How is this feasible, you might ask? There are two ways to approach this:

.

1

Put an ornament in the bottom of their stocking that coordinates with a fictional name on their gifts. For example, a snowman ornament could pair with the name “Frosty” written on all of their gifts. Once they figure out the association, they’ll finally know which gifts are theirs.

.

2

Don’t mess with name tags AT ALL. This is your easy way out! Use one single wrapping paper design for each child’s gifts. Cut a square of their dedicated wrapping paper to include in their stocking so they can discover on Christmas morning which gifts are theirs to unwrap.

This year find creative new traditions to spice up the holidays, such as special wrapping paper for each kiddo.

Gift of the Five Senses:

I’M ALWAYS looking for out-of-the-box ideas when it comes to

gift giving. Sure, I want to find the best present for each person on my list… but I often find myself searching for a way to take it a step further. Sticking with a theme like the five senses could be an amusing way to not only help guide the gift hunt, but make a game out of it as the littles try to guess which gift is paired with each sense. Here are some examples to get you started: SEE: Tickets to go see a movie (or a Fandango gift card to hold on to!) HEAR: Headphones or Bluetooth earbuds TOUCH: Plush blanket, soft pillow, or fuzzy pullover TASTE: An assortment of their favorite snacks SMELL: Bath set with bubbles, soap, bath bombs, and lotion *Bonus: this can be just as enjoyable for adults, too! Think concert or sporting event tickets for sight, a cookbook or grilling gadget for taste… the list is endless!

Stockings Stuffed with Hope: I’M NOT sure how it’s

possible, but I’m convinced that each year passes by more quickly than the one before. As the years begin to blur together and it’s sometimes difficult to recall all that happens within those speedy 365 days, it can be special to pause and reflect a little deeper… and this tradition does just that! It’s actually more fitting to kick off at the end of the season, but sets you up for part two, which will be at the start of the next year’s Christmas season. Let me explain: As the holidays come to an end and you’re getting ready to pack away the stockings, give the kiddos a chance to write out (or write for them) their hopes for the next year. This list could consist of goals they want to achieve, memories they want to make, or tasks they want to accomplish. Silly or sentimental, whatever comes to mind! Then, stuff these lists down into their stockings. When Christmas rolls around again and it’s time to hang the stockings back up, you’re presented with the perfect opportunity to think back on the year and celebrate all of the successful moments.

Christmas Treats:

WE ALL know the classic tune that ever-so-

faithfully leads us back to a partridge in a pear tree time and time again. But, what if that partridge was actually in a Christmas tree? A Christmas Tree Cake, that is! Do I have your attention now? Hear me out… 12 Days of Christmas, but a version filled with holiday treats. Begin on December 14th and indulge through December 25th where the countdown ends with the beloved Little Debbies in everyone’s stocking. Here’s a cheat sheet for some 12 Days of Christmas Treats inspo: 12 drummers drumming = Drumstick ice cream

6 geese a laying = Palmer gold foiled chocolate easter eggs

11 pipers piping = “piping” hot apple cider

5 golden rings = Mochinut donuts

10 lords a leaping = British teacakes 9 ladies dancing = Ladyfingers 8 maids a milking = peppermint milkshake 7 swans a swimming = hot chocolate with swans swimming atop (AKA mini marshmallows)

4 calling birds = Rice Krispy treat balls shaped into a bird’s nest 3 french hens = French macarons from TADA 2 turtle doves = Dove chocolate candy 1 partridge in a pear tree = Little Debbie Christmas “tree” cakes

Peppermint Chip Barrett’s Baked Goods

There’s just something about the holidays that makes us… hungry. Think of all the pies and cakes and turkeys and hams, and certainly don’t forget the dressings, dips, casseroles — we could go on. But for us, Christmas cookies just make us feel a certain kind of way. And the great thing about cookies is there’s a flavor to satisfy everyone... 34

Holiday Cookies Seven Sisters Kitchen

⊲ Between their salted caramel bars, coconut macaroons, white chocolate macadamia nut cookies, chocolate dipped shortbread cookies, pistachio cranberry cookies and pecan squares, Seven Sisters Kitchen has everything you need to build the perfect holiday cookie platter. Personally, we feel the pecan squares take center stage because, after all, what are the holidays without pecan pies? These pecan squares — the cookie version of those beloved pies — are thick and addictive, a perfect ratio of pecan to crust to gooey center. While Seven Sisters may be known for their scones, their cookie game is on point! WAYS TO GIVE BACK THIS HOLIDAY SEASON By Angela Veugeler

HE HOLIDAYS are a special time of

year. There is something magical about the wonder of the season. Beyond all of the hustle and bustle, the Christmas parties, decorating, family get-togethers, gift giving and receiving, and grand holiday feasts, there is the joy of supporting those in need. After all, that is really what the season is all about. Below are a variety of amazing local nonprofits and ways to give back to them using your time and talents or finances this holiday season.

Help Children in Foster Care with Jambos

Founded in 2019 and based in Buford, Jambos is on a mission to bring comfort to kids in the foster care system by providing them with brand-new pajamas. The organization partners with our community as well as communities around the world to host pajama drives, collecting thousands of pairs of pajamas to be shipped to children all over the world. They aim to share the comforting feeling that comes from putting on new pajamas with the children they serve. Jambos hosts several pajama drives during the holidays and is always in need of monetary donations. StillFire Brewing is hosting a PJ/DJ party on Friday, Dec. 9, where attendees who donate a pair of new pajamas or make a $20 donation will receive a free half pour. Schedule a photo shoot at Prospect Farms in Lawrenceville and bring new pajamas to donate between now and December 15. To view upcoming events or give to Jambos, visit JambosDonates.com.

Sponsor a Child or Senior this Christmas through North Gwinnett Co-Op

Right here in our community, there are people who are not expecting the holidays to be very bright. They may have fallen on hard times, they may be ill, alone, or unable to work, and therefore unable to provide Christmas for their children. In early October the North Gwinnett Co-Op begins the vetting process and sign-ups for individuals and families in need of help during the holiday season. If you choose to bless someone by sponsoring a child or senior, the co-op will share their wish list along with some basic clothing needs. Gifts need to be delivered by Friday, December 9, 2022. The co-op also collects meal boxes for families for both Thanksgiving and Christmas. Visit NGCoop.org for more information.

Give the Gift of Health with Good Samaritan Gwinnett

Good Samaritan Health Centers of Gwinnett demonstrates the love of Christ by providing quality and affordable primary health care and dental services for low-income, uninsured individuals and families at their two locations in Norcross. Your donation helps the organization restore health, smiles, hope and faith to the families it serves. For more information or to donate visit GoodSamGwinnett.org.

Become a Mentoring Family with Connections Homes

Connections Homes is a faith-based nonprofit organization dedicated to connecting young adults to families. Every year in our country an estimated 85,000 young men and women between the ages of 18-24 are living life unconnected to family or any caring, stable adult. These young people are living on our

Connections Homes is committed to changing the outcomes for this forgotten population by connecting them with families who will walk with them in life and guide them to a successful future. the opportunity to explore options that might otherwise be unavailable to people with disabilities. For more information on Creative Enterprises or to donate, visit CreativeEnterprises.org.

Donate to The Quinn House’s Annual Holiday Food Box Drive

The Quinn House is preparing for their annual Thanksgiving and Christmas Food Box Drive to help local families struggling this holiday season and they need your help. The Quinn House is a Christian ministry for food distribution, clothing and home goods assistance, and men’s addiction recovery that has served the Gwinnett County area for more than 30 years. Their key principles are to provide direct assistance for basic human needs; create a nonjudgmental environment where people have a positive experience and feel comfortable asking for and receiving help; and to help people change their inward focus to an outward focus through helping others. In addition to their thrift store and weekly food pantry, The Quinn House assembles and distributes around 500 Thanksgiving and Christmas food boxes to needy families in the community annually. They strive to fill each box with all the items that make up a traditional holiday meal, complete with pies, cakes, and all the trimmings. To continue this wonderful tradition, The Quinn House is requesting donations of $15 gift cards (Kroger, Publix, or Walmart) so the families can purchase a turkey, chicken or ham to make the meal complete. The $15 grocery store gift card donations can be dropped off with Rickie or Pete at The Quinn House main office located at 555 Hurricane Shoals Road in Lawrenceville between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. For more information, call 770-962-0470 or visit TheQuinnHouse.com.

Change the life of a family who has experienced homelessness.

Rainbow Village aims to transform the lives of families experiencing homelessness. Their program focuses on family stability, well-being, financial management, education and training as well as employment and career. Many families arrive at Rainbow Village with nothing. This holiday season, bless one of their families with apartment household items to help them feel at home such as bedding, pots and pans, dishes, towels, flatware and more. Or, purchase a Visa, Mastercard or American Express gift card in $25 or $50 increments that will allow residents to purchase gifts for their children. Visit their website for a list of household items needed, delivery address and for more information at RainbowVillage.org/Holiday-Giving. ■

I’m Thankful For...

We recently asked our readers to share what they’re most thankful for this year, whether it’s a reliable friend, new job, favorite food, or bingeable TV show — and boy did you deliver! In honor of Thanksgiving and the impending holiday season, we wanted to highlight the special people, places, and things that fill our readers’ hearts with joy. And on a personal note, we wanted to take this time to say a big thank you to all our readers and advertisers who make Suwanee Magazine possible. We couldn’t do it without you, and we are so grateful for each one of you.

“Everyone says I ‛lucked out’ when I married Rick. I am here to officially say that is 100% true. From nursing me back to health after a car wreck, to joining me and supporting me in all of my work and continuing education, Rick is the foundation I can build my future on. He is my biggest cheerleader, co-captain of our household, and co-parent to our two rescues. I am most thankful for my husband. Today and every day.” — Jessica Rantamaki, Suwanee

I’m thankful for the Suwanee Farmers Market. I can come after a solo run on the Greenway or with my family. Lots of feel-good vibes and small-town feels. You never know what to expect. You might be able to hold a goat or run into an influential Atlantan!”

“I am thankful for my daughter who fills my life with happiness and love. She’s just given us the most precious gift, our first and probably only grand baby. Our family is so blessed. Thank you, Kristen Russell, for always being there for your dad and I.” — Carol Russell, Suwanee

— Tara Varnadore, Dacula

“I’m thankful for my friends Alex and Joy. I moved to Georgia last February 2022 with only two suitcases, $100, not knowing how to drive, and a hope that I'll find a job soon enough. They were very supportive in helping me get back on my feet and I'll be forever grateful for all that they've done for me!” — Kristel Silang, Sandy Springs

“I am thankful for all the loved ones in my life for 73 years. Also, the new loves are such a gift.” — Karen Mitchell 50

Building Meaningful Family Traditions THE HOLIDAYS are upon us! There are so

many activities and events during the holiday season it is easy to get overwhelmed with planning parties, wrapping gifts, and hanging all of the festive lights. When we really stop to think, it might even feel like stress and festive-filled calendars have unintentionally become the focus of our holiday traditions. If you are looking for ways to reduce stress this season, try talking with your family about the traditions or events that are the most important to them. What is important and meaningful to them might even surprise you! Here are three questions to help start conversations about holiday traditions and help build meaningful traditions this holiday season.

What activities celebrate our family's religious beliefs and culture?

⊲ Traditions that are rooted in culture and beliefs help to serve as reminders of family history and experiences. This can be particularly meaningful for kids and teens who are trying to figure out where they come from and what is important. Family members often come from different cultures, so look for ways to bring cultures together to create unique traditions to your family. This could be serving American and Chinese foods at Thanksgiving or decorating your home with Christmas trees and colorful lanterns.

What gatherings help us build closer family relationships?

⊲ Grandparents often have the best stories to tell; you can almost always

52

count on someone getting slightly embarrassed and having a good laugh together. While these stories might be sprinkled with humor and fun they also help to connect the generations within a family and bring people closer together. Family traditions can be a great time to build memories, pass along family history, and feel closer to the people within your family. Creating space and time for these types of conversations might mean doing fewer activities and instead spending more time just sitting with each other over holiday dinners, talking while baking cookies, or enjoying a cozy fire together.

or holiday activities, this is a great question to help brainstorm new activities that show the character and values of your family well.

 Traditions help to shape a family; how they spend time together and how culture is passed down through the generations. When family traditions are intentional in celebrating a family’s unique beliefs, culture, values, and relationships the more meaning holiday traditions hold for the whole family.

What shows the values and character of our family?

⊲ What a family focuses on highlights what is important to the people within the family. If most of the time and resources during the holidays are focused on building relationships and helping the community, this may communicate that people are valuable and important. If your family values are not lining up with your traditions

Think of a light, sweet, fluffy mochi donut wrapped around a hot dog or mozzarella cheese, but the fun doesn’t stop there. Diners have the choice between original, potato, crispy ramen, or Hot Cheeto-coated goodness on a stick, plus an assortment of dipping sauces. Best of luck choosing between them because they’re all great combinations and it’s nearly impossible to decide! Sarah Cha, owner of Mochinut Suwanee, suggests topping your corn dog with mayo, the traditional Korean way. “You may be surprised, but spicy mayo is the traditional way we eat them over there,” she says.

MATT WILLIAMS’ CRAFT BEER DREAMS HAVE COME TRUE WITH BLACKBIRD FARMS BREWERY, A FARM-INSPIRED BREWERY CENTERED AROUND THE LILBURN COMMUNITY. By: Jessica Dacey / Photos by Aleen Karakashian and Jessica Dacey

dream more than 10 years in the making is now a reality for Blackbird Farms Brewery owner and head brewer, Matt Williams. After beginning his brewery career more than 20 years ago, Williams knew he had the expertise and knowledge to venture out on his own. Located in Lilburn, Blackbird Farms Brewery is known as a family- and petfriendly neighborhood brewery that makes everyone feel welcome. Brewdog Bobby Joe How did you get involved in the brewery industry? I’ve been in the brewery industry my whole career, since I was 21. I started out in Wisconsin working in brewpubs and cleaning kegs, and then I moved up to being an assistant brewer just like many other people start out in this industry. I built myself a path by

surrounding myself with people who were really good at the craft, and I was able to learn from mentors who were considered some of the best in Wisconsin, which then allowed me to bring that skillset down to Georgia.

What made you decide on Lilburn as the location to open Blackbird Farms?

Lilburn needed something like this. A few years ago, there weren’t many breweries in Gwinnett and now you’re seeing more and more pop up as time goes on, and we’re a part of that growth. We knew we wanted to be in a standalone building on a busy street if possible, and we wanted to be in an area where we felt welcomed and desired. When we spoke to the city of Lilburn early on, they seemed to be excited to have us and so that was a big part of it: feeling welcomed and wanted by Lilburn. There wasn’t much of a beer scene over here so we felt it would be the perfect place to plant roots. We’re proud to be making beer here in Lilburn and to help change the craft beer culture in the areas outside of the Perimeter.

What was the inspiration behind the design and interior of the brewery? We knew we wanted something with a clean, modern, and farmhouse vibe — hence the name Blackbird Farms. Our design just sort of evolved into what it is now once we got started. There are church pews along the walls which gives the brewery a churchy, gospel, kind of rock ’n’ roll vibe along with our massive leather granite bar that can sit upward of 30 people. There are a handful of oldschool arcade games for the kids — and adults — to play for free and a massive beer garden out back that extends our interior

59

taproom to the outdoors. We also design our own merchandise in house that we’re really proud of. Each piece of merchandise is based off of some of the beers that we brew. A good friend of mine owns an apparel company called Gleeson and just does an awesome job.

What sets Blackbird Farms apart from other breweries in the area? I brew foraged beer, which

means I’ll use local farmers’ ingredients or even ingredients from Lilburn’s Community Garden. I used to work in ingredient sales, so I’ve really learned how to utilize each and every ingredient by working with many local farmers. I like to use ingredients that are somewhat out there or not commonly known and include that into the name of the beer so guests really know what they’re drinking. I also strategically built this brewery to be a one-person job. You’ll see me batching new beers and pouring beers for customers in the taproom. You may see our brew dog, Bobby Joe, helping out from time to time. He’s a rescue beagle mix, so we are certainly pet friendly out in the beer garden.

What is your favorite part about brewing beer? When it comes down to it, the brewing process is pretty much the same for each beer and at the end of the day, it’s

48 60

/ JUNE 22 suwaneemagazine.com I I MAY NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 22 I Suwanee Magazine I I suwaneemagazine.com

manual labor. So really, the tasting part of the process is the best. What’s exciting is when you design a beer and execute it the way you had hoped and end up with a final product that you are proud of. The fun part is turning around and sharing your final product with the customer.

FOOD AND DRINK

In addition to the beer, Blackbird Farms patrons can enjoy an outdoor beer garden and old-school arcade games the kids will love.

What is your top seller? Our Hazys and IPAs seem to always be the top sellers, but we do have an Imperial Stout called Trophy Husband that is absolutely gorgeous. It’s big and full-bodied at 11%, but still drinks soft.

Do you host events? We love having live music at the

brewery. Right now we’re doing live music once a month and we host trivia on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. We also are a part of the Peachstate Cornhole League on Wednesday nights. We also offer the brewery as an event space for things like baby showers, class reunions, birthdays, and other private events.

How has the response been since opening?

It’s been great, we see 10 to 20 new customers every weekend since we opened about a year ago, which means our customer base is loyal and has been sharing and talking about us which is great. It takes time, but we’re going to be here for a long time and we love seeing new customers discover us. Blackbird Farms Brewery is located at 4098 Lawrenceville Highway in Lilburn. Greater Atlanta Christian School Collects Needed Supplies For Neighbor School IN AUGUST, Greater Atlanta Christian School (GAC) families gathered to sort and pack donated school supplies, such as pencils, crayons, notebooks, folders, and disinfecting wipes, for the teachers and students of neighboring school Meadowcreek Elementary School. More than 200 individuals attended the service event to prepare the supplies, donated by GAC families, for delivery to 40 classrooms at Meadowcreek Elementary, where the need for supplies is greatly felt. Justin Bagwell, GAC Director of Spiritual Life, said the service initiative, Spartans Serving Together, provided an opportunity for GAC families to serve together in the local community. "The day was an inspiring time of worship, fellowship, and service together as a GAC community,” Bagwell said. “Each person, including the youngest of our Spartans, played a significant role in this service event.” The project was the vision of GAC Service Prefect, Colton Harsh, who said, “This service opportunity not only will be an amazing way to start the year off, but also will be a step toward our goal of being the hands and feet of Jesus.” Prefects at GAC are student leaders from the senior class who possess a high degree of commitment to the school’s values and ideals and create impact within the school community through servant leadership. “We want to see GAC be a neighbor that our community can rely on,” said Savannah Roberts, GAC High School Service Director. “We want people to encounter the Spirit of God through our support and service to our neighbors. And we want our GAC family to grow together in serving.”

City of Suwanee Hosts Groundbreaking for Town Center on Main and DeLay Nature Park THE CITY of Suwanee broke ground on

September 26 on the long-awaited expansion of Town Center Park on Main and the DeLay Nature Park. Mayor Jimmy Burnette, the City Council, representatives from Reeves Young, Clark Patterson Lee, Gwinnett County Library, and other community members were on hand for the ceremonial groundbreaking. The dual parks, totaling 25 acres, will transform the area, creating a cohesive “neighborhood” encompassing the Suwanee Library, PlayTown Suwanee, Fire Station 13, and resulting in the

rerouting of Main Street and median closure on Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road. Town Center on Main will be an urban-style greenspace with a unique character, personality, and purpose, similar to but separate from the existing Town Center Park. The Suwanee Library will serve as the anchor for this new space much like the way City Hall relates to the existing park. The majority of the site — roughly 15 of the wooded 25 acres along the existing Brushy Creek Greenway — will remain largely undisturbed as the DeLay Nature Park. Once completed, Town Center

CITY BUZZ

Park and Town Center on Main will function as a unified space, linked by Station Park (located next to the police station) and the pedestrian tunnel under the railroad. The topography of the new park will allow it to overlook Town Center, further enhancing the relationship of the two spaces. The park plan features a mixture of urban and rural environments, including an elevated bridge for pedestrian and bicycle use, an open terrace plaza at the peak of the park’s elevation with large-scale pavilions, sand pit volleyball courts, and a public art piece. “The success of Town Center Park has exceeded all expectations,” said Mayor Jimmy Burnette. “The park draws over 300,000 visitors annually to events, as well as regularly serving our 20,000 citizens. The new park will help ease the demand on the existing park and surrounding community.”

2022 Joel P. Hudson Humanitarian Award Winners - Tom and Marshall Barton.

RAINBOW VILLAGE HOSTS “WE ARE FAMILY” BENEFIT GALA TO RAISE AWARENESS FOR HOMELESSNESS  ON OCTOBER 1, hundreds gathered together in the ballroom of the Atlanta Athletic Club to raise $491,920 on behalf of Rainbow Village and its ongoing mission to bring help, hope, housing and healing to families experiencing homelessness. In the days that followed, the nonprofit presented a challenge to its following to meet the $500,000 goal it had set for its “We Are Family” Benefit Gala. That fanbase stepped forward to close the gap with a final tally of $501,970, making it possible for Rainbow Village to continue to provide transitional housing and transformational programming to the families it serves. “At just two and a half acres, our campus is big enough to accommodate 30 families at a time for up to two years,” said Melanie Conner, CEO of Rainbow Village. “In 2021, we served 35 individual families — providing 27,000+ bed nights. We are on track to surpass those numbers this year. Unfortunately, the need is great. For more than 2,000 families in Gwinnett County alone, they are either homeless or precariously housed. We receive calls every single day from families seeking our help. Right now, every single apartment at Rainbow Village is filled and we

have nowhere to place them. We need to do more. The funds we raised during this year’s Benefit Gala will aid in the expansion of our programs beyond the borders of Rainbow Village in hopes of aiding families before they experience homelessness.” During the Gala, Rainbow Village graduate, Charnette Brown, spoke before the crowd of 298 supporters, sharing her very personal journey from illness to homelessness to great success beyond the borders of the Duluth-based nonprofit’s campus. The Gala also served as a forum for the presentation of the 2022 Joel P. Hudson Humanitarian Award to Tom and Marshall Barton for the selfless gifts of their time and treasure to a number of nonprofits and community organizations throughout the area, including Marshall’s service on the Rainbow Village board. Over the months to come, Rainbow Village will promote a year-end campaign to fuel its goal to expand its reach to families in need beyond its campus in 2023. To support those efforts, individual donors and corporations can make a one-time donation or become a monthly recurring donor of Rainbow Village by texting Giftofhope to 844-422-6444.

Level Creek United Methodist Church Celebrates 200 Years of Ministry Level Creek United Methodist Church celebrated its

200th anniversary on October 2. Founded in 1822, the congregation was one of the first churches in Gwinnett County and remains a vibrant faith community today. The church founded the first school in the county, which eventually became what is now Level Creek Elementary. Over the years much has changed and modernized, but the church’s current Sanctuary is 125 years old and maintains a wonderful historic charm. Bicentennial celebrations included worship led by

United Methodist Bishop Sue Haupert-Johnson and many of the church’s former pastors. The church also unearthed a time capsule, published an extensive history of the church, and gathered for dinner to celebrate 200 years of ministry. Current pastor Rev. Elaine Wilder shares, “We remember the past and look towards the future. Our church has been and will continue to be a bright light of hope for the Suwanee community.” For more information on the church and its programs, visit www.lcumc.net.

CREATING CLOSER community is a big part of what we do here at Suwanee Magazine. That’s why we’re proud to bring you The Faces of Suwanee. Suwanee is a great community with great people. We’ll be featuring

conversations we have with

WHAT INSPIRED YOU OR LED YOU TO YOUR CURRENT CAREER? As young as I can

members of our community as a way of telling the story of Suwanee, one smiling face at a time. The Faces of Suwanee shines a light on the people who live and work here. You can read all of the interviews at TheFacesofSuwanee.com, and even nominate someone you think should be featured on the website. Be sure to follow Suwanee Magazine’s Facebook page where we’ll be sharing new Faces of Suwanee interviews regularly.

A free spirit with a warm personality, Cherie Heringer is a beloved member of the Suwanee community who has many talents and artistic ambitions. In fact, she serves on the Suwanee Public Arts Commission and is the Vice President of the Suwanee Arts Center, where she still regularly participates in art exhibitions. We recently caught up with Cherie to learn more about her and what she loves most about her community.

I

remember I was involved in artistic endeavors like choir, band, orchestra, theater, photography, writing, and now, art. In college I was a voice major for a while, but ultimately got my degree in Communications/ Advertising. I was also a member of the University of Tennessee Concert Choir and the UT Singers — an ambassador group representing UT. We traveled weekly and performed show-type music with choreography. It was such a blast! But once my kids came along, I realized how passionate I was about passing along creativity and exposing them to as many artistic opportunities as possible. This passion is what led me to Perimeter Academy of the Arts, where I was the director for about 10 years. Both of my children have artistic bents — my son is a singer/

songwriter and my daughter danced for 15 years and has her hands in a lot of artistic stuff. Both pursue many artforms for pleasure.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE RESTAURANT IN SUWANEE AND WHAT DO YOU LOVE THERE?

It’s hard to beat Ippolito’s and those amazing desserts!

HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKED OR LIVED IN SUWANEE? I moved here in 2007 from Alpharetta.

WHAT HAS KEPT YOU HERE? It is the best place we have ever lived. It’s friendly, innovative, culturally diverse, and the city is always striving to do something new. We love it here.

CITY BUZZ

I would want to have free reign to pick the brains of those who have seen so much history. FDR comes to mind. He served as president for four terms and saw so much at that time, including WWII and the Depression, and he did it from a wheelchair. I’d also choose George and Laura Bush. Their family has given so much to public service and I’d also like to hear more about the deepest parts of 9/11 from their perspective, unfiltered.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT SUWANEE? Besides the

people and the public art, we make a lot of use of the greenways.

WHAT IS SOMETHING INTERESTING THAT MOST PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU?

TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY.

My husband, Tony, and I have two adult kids, Travis (30) and Abby (28), and a Schnauzer who my daughter describes as the monster who made her a middle child! Nothing will ever come close to how much I love these people!

WHO IS THE MOST INTERESTING PERSON YOU’VE MET IN SUWANEE? Although there are so

many I could choose from, I’m going to give a shoutout to Abby Wilkerson at the City of Suwanee. She can pull off going to a black-tie event, looking amazing, then turn around and land a deer with her mad shotgun skills. She is seriously a Renaissance woman who is as funny as she is serious — especially about correct grammar.

IF YOU COULD TRAVEL ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD RIGHT NOW, WHERE WOULD IT BE AND WHY? This is hard to narrow down, but I wouldn’t turn down a trip to the Amalfi Coast.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE A CROWD OF PEOPLE? Love your family and cherish your friends.

WHAT IS SOMETHING ON YOUR BUCKET LIST? I want to visit all the

states in the U.S. — I have five left to visit! I’ve been to six countries and intend to see more.

CHOOSE ANYONE (PAST OR PRESENT) WITH WHOM YOU WOULD LOVE TO HAVE LUNCH. This

I met my husband in Papua New Guinea on a medical mission trip in a remote area of the PNG Highlands Region. This was my first trip out of the country, and we were seriously out in the jungle and among remote tribes. We even met some former cannibals! We got to know some of the nationals, taught in their school on the mission, learned to accept that people sometimes just carry around a chicken, the red stuff on teeth that looks like blood is really beetle nut, experienced the Southern constellations — the Southern Cross — and saw skies with more stars than you can imagine. Out in a jungle you’re fairly stripped of your creature comforts and social props, so we got to know each other on a really basic level. Upon return I was relieved that I didn’t feel called to go be a fulltime missionary in the jungle and my senses were acutely aware of how fast things move here, the nonstop noises we don’t even think about, and a much greater appreciation of what we have in our country. I’ve never taken that for granted again. ■

question always trips me up.
