SPRING INTO THE SEASON

OR ME, one of the most important jobs I have as a parent is making sure my kids are engaged and involved in something that truly makes them happy, while also giving them an outlet to grow, learn, and make friends. Over the last eight years, I’ve taken my daughter to ballet classes, soccer games, and basketball practices, all in the hope of finding something that would click for her. It wasn’t until she stepped foot on the mat of her first karate class that I saw her eyes light up. Throughout the class, the smile didn’t leave her face, and I knew that we had found the right place for her — for now, at least.

Summer camps are a great way to introduce our children to new activities and experiences while also allowing them to meet new friends and learn new skills. Camps are also a wonderful opportunity to help nurture a skill they already have. So whether you’re enrolling your child in a sports camp to introduce them to a new game or a coding camp to encourage a talent they already have, summer camps can help keep them engaged, busy, and happy during their break from school. Turn to p. 23 for our annual Summer Camp Guide , where you’ll find a variety of camps that span a number of activities, including the arts, sports, science and more. We hope it’ll help you find the perfect fit for your kiddo!

While a section of this issue is dedicated to planning for the summer, that doesn’t mean we’ve ignored spring! Turn to p. 32 for a Spring Home Maintenance Checklist that will help keep your home in tip-top shape. Spring is also the season when one of our favorite sweet spots reopens! For more than 15 years, RIta’s has served up scoops of delicious Italian ice and custard in Suwanee Town Center. Turn to p. 39 to

meet the Bartows, the shop’s new owners, who are continuing the store's exceptional reputation for sweet treats and even sweeter service.

It’s not truly spring in Suwanee until our favorite annual event returns to the park. After being crowned the Best Beer Festival in the country by USA Today , the Suwanee American Craft Beer Fest returns on March 18 with unlimited samples of over 400 craft beers from more than 100 breweries. Turn to p. 46 to get the scoop on this year’s festival, including all of the vendors, backyard games, live music and, of course, the incredible selection of beer!

As we spring forward into a new year, we want to dedicate space to highlighting local businesses new and established. Head to p. 17 to read about American Casual Living receiving international recognition, and then flip to p. 12 to meet one of Suwanee’s newest businesses, Bath Tune-Up , which works with homeowners to breathe new life into their bathrooms. We’re also excited to highlight all of the amazing things Suwanee’s hometown brewery, StillFire Brewing , is doing for our community. Learn more about their Dude 21 IPA on p. 66, which benefits the Dude 21 Foundation, an organization created in honor of Gainesville firefighter Chandler Patterson who passed away after a tragic accident in 2021, that is dedicated to supporting local firefighters, as well as the parents, widows, and children of fallen first responders.

And don’t forget about our 2023 Cutest Pup in Suwanee Contest ! This year was a record year for our contest with 170 nominations and more than 4,000 votes cast! Turn to p. 19 to meet Lexie, Chancho, and Brooks, the winners of this year’s contest. Thank you to everyone who entered and voted for making it the biggest year yet!

STRATEGIES

Q: IS THIS A GOOD TIME TO INVEST IN BONDS?

It may be a great opportunity.

Consider this: two years ago, the world was clamoring for the “protection” of negative-yield bonds. People were agreeing to pay interest (not receive interest) for government bonds. Sounds crazy, except there was over 18 trillion dollars repositioned into those “loser” bonds (you deliberately lost money). Interest rates had been so low, for so long, many people assumed it would always be that way.1

With out-of-control government spending creating mountains of unpayable debt, the Federal Reserve printed trillions to cover it, and then the inevitable resulted: inflation. 2

The major tool used by the Federal Reserve to attempt to tame U.S. inflation is to raise interest rates. This includes the rates paid on bonds. However, those rate increases also affect the monthly payments on the 32 trillion of existing U.S. government debt. If rates keep rising, a recession may follow because the government could not afford the much higher “minimum monthly payments.” This is the 2008 “sub-prime” mortgage fiasco at the federal level. When interest rates went up in 2007, over ten million homeowners could not afford their higher monthly mortgage payments, and as a result, they lost their homes in foreclosures. 3 Did our leaders learn from that lesson? No, instead they repeated it on a massive scale. Presidents Obama, Trump, and Biden created enormous U.S. government debt when interest rates were nearly non-existent. That is over! Now reality, higher interest rates, and inflation are back.

The Federal Reserve has been raising interest rates, but our government will not be able to keep paying the rising debt costs. At some point, the Federal Reserve will begin to lower rates so the government can continue to operate. Buying bonds at or near the top of the interest rate peak may be an opportunity to lock in good returns — the opposite of negative-yield bonds. ■

LUXE BATHS

BATH TUNE-UP WORKS WITH

HOMEOWNERS TO BREATHE NEW LIFE INTO THE MOST PERSONAL SPACE IN THEIR HOME — THE BATHROOM.

T’S NO secret that over the past few years, we’ve all been spending a lot more time at home. Because of this, many people are taking time to update or remodel their home to make it more comfortable, functional, and even just prettier. While many people focus on larger spaces like the kitchen, living room, master bedroom, or even the backyard, we shouldn’t neglect perhaps the most intimate space in our house: the bathroom.

While the kitchen and living room may be the more social areas of your home, the bathroom is extremely personal, so it’s important to create a space that feels like your own personal oasis. That’s where Belle and Fer Scenna step in. As owners of Alpharetta’s Bath Tune-Up franchise, they help homeowners create the bathrooms of their dreams.

Custom Design Options

⊲ Specializing in full-service bath remodels, Bath Tune-Up provides a full range of custom design options as well as curated concepts for every project level. They realize that there

12 Suwanee Magazine suwaneemagazine.com MARCH / APRIL 23 BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

are a number of decisions and added stress that go into a remodel, so they work to remove the “overwhelm” from the equation by being your

one-stop shop, assisting from design to install. They even help with the “behind the walls” components, such as the electricity and plumbing.

Bath Tune-Up’s services include shower and tub installation, conversion (changing a tub to a shower or vice versa), as well as full remodels. In addition to these services, Belle and Fer work to create a different type of experience than homeowners may have had in the past, and they apply their customer service trustpoints to every project. “It sounds basic, but we treat our clients how we want to be treated,” Belle says. “That includes listening, arriving on time, respecting your home, providing innovative solutions, and always returning calls within 24 hours.”

A European Touch

⊲ Originally from Argentina, Belle brings a European influence to her

designs, creating a truly unique space that is both personal and functional. With an eye for design, Belle loves incorporating materials such as wood, iron, concrete, and glass to create eye-catching spaces. She also likes to add plants to bring in outdoor elements, giving it an organic feel. Belle will meet with clients multiple times to truly understand their vision, while also making suggestions to help elevate the design.

“Where to place your trust for a bathroom project is a big decision, and we work to guide our clients through it,” Belle says. “Sometimes the amount of choices, colors, styles, and finishes can be overwhelming, so we help them through the process of selecting what they most want to change, and what service might be best for their family’s needs and budget.”

Bath Tune-Up has worked hard to create a culture of honesty paired with a passion for innovative design. While Bath Tune-Up is a great option for basic bath remodels, Belle thrives on working with clients who want to create a truly unique space and who are open to new ideas.

And while a bathroom remodel will certainly increase the value of your home, don’t wait until you’re planning to put your house on the market to consider an update. “What we hear most often from our clients is that they wish they would have updated their bath space sooner,” Belle says. “The bath is where you get ready to take on the day, wind down at night, and should be your oasis for relaxation.”

The last few years have exposed us all to the roller coaster called real estate, and one of the results of that has been an increase in empty nesters shifting their mindset from needing to own a big home to being open to “rightsizing” and renting while they figure out what’s next. Part of the challenge for the active 55+ market has been the limited rental options available. Up until now, you could either rent a random house in a neighborhood and not know what you’re getting into, or you could rent in a “traditional” apartment building which can be too big a leap for many people to take. As a result, one of Atlanta’s premier active adult developers has selected Suwanee for their flagship cottage community neighborhood, Hayloft Cottages at Suwanee.

Hayloft Cottages at Suwanee is a thoughtfully-designed neighborhood of 98 charming cottages nestled in the heart of Suwanee near the intersection of Eva Kennedy Road and Peachtree

Industrial Boulevard. Residents will be able to walk, bike, or drive to the award-winning Suwanee Town Center and all the fun and entertainment it has to o er.

Hayloft Cottages has been designed to appeal to individuals and couples ready to give up the maintenance of home ownership while still enjoying the comforts of home they’ve grown accustomed to. Our flagship community in Suwanee will o er residents a choice of 1-, 2-, & 3-bedroom floor plans in both detached and attached configurations. Key design features include granite/quartz countertops, stainless steel appliance packages including gas stoves, private patios/balconies, full-size washers & dryers, optional loft/ o ce spaces, and modern lighting and fixtures. Several of the floor plans also o er 1 or 2 car garages.

Community amenities were designed for fun and entertaining. Just outside the clubhouse residents will

be able to enjoy the event lawn with wood-burning fire pit, Green Egg©, gas grill, and a walking path that loops around a central pond. Also included in the community is a fenced-in dog run, lighted pickle ball court, and community gardens with a potting shed.

According to Jenny Taylor, Vice President of Operations, “We are excited to be the first to bring the cottage rental concept to the Suwanee community. We carefully selected this incredible location and designed this community for today’s empty nesters seeking the lifestyle, freedom, and flexibility that renting o ers when they can’t quite yet see themselves living in an apartment building. The residents at Hayloft Cottages will enjoy the benefit of professional management that renting o ers, without compromising the conveniences and comfort of homeownership.”

WOODLANDS CAMP AND RETREAT CENTER

A CAMP WITH A PURPOSE

We spoke with Woodlands Camp and Retreat Center’s longtime camper Jack Swift about his experience and transition into summer staff member.

LOCATED IN the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Cleveland, Georgia, Woodlands Camp and Retreat Center was founded in 1997 and welcomes more than 10,000 campers annually in four different programs.

The mission of the nondenominational Christian camp is to inspire and equip this generation to do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God (Micah 6:8). The 131-acre campus is home to beautiful forests and a spring-fed lake. Woodlands Camp invites campers to build lifelong friendships, develop unforgettable memories, and get to know the God who created it all. During their stay, campers will take part in games, swimming, zip-lining, giant swinging, rock wall climbing, intentional relationships, Bible studies and more. In addition to their exciting overnight camps, Woodlands

also offers day camps at local churches throughout Georgia. We asked longtime camper Jack Swift, a Sugar Hill resident and current University of Georgia student, to share about his experience at Woodlands.

How many years have you been attending Woodlands summer camp and what age did you start going there? I attended Woodlands summer camp for seven years and started when I was 12 years old.

What is the format? The format varies by age group. 6-8 year olds stay three days and two nights, 8-11

25
SUMMER CAMP SPOTLIGHT

year olds stay five days and four nights, and both the 11-13 and 1318 age groups stay six days and five nights.

How many campers are there each week? What about in each cabin or per counselor? During the weeks that I attended from 12-18 years old, there were approximately 290-300 campers each week (boys and girls). Each counselor had about 12-13 campers per week.

What were some of your favorite activities at camp? Some of my favorite activities at camp were playing basketball or hanging out in the lake during free time, memorizing

Bible verses, and having great conversations with friends and counselors. There are rocking chairs in front of every cabin that are awesome!

Can you share some of your experiences or favorite memories from Woodlands? The meals and games were favorites of mine, but my favorite part of camp is Porch Talks. Porch Talks are a time for the counselor (and his/her “booster,” a support staffer who also hangs out with the cabin) to sit on the porch after lights out and take questions from campers. I had some really great conversations with amazing counselors over the years that helped me in my faith.

What would you tell a parent looking at sending their child to overnight camp for the first time? If you’re teetering on the decision of sending your child to overnight camp for the first time, definitely do it! The counselors and boosters are so well prepared by Woodlands, and they are going to go above and beyond to make

your child comfortable. On top of being able to meet your child’s counselor at drop-off, you can also send them emails and “carepackages” throughout the week to remind them you’re thinking of them.

What are some of the things you learned being away at camp? Over seven summers at Woodlands, I learned how to

be a better friend, a better family member and a better leader.

Do you remember if you were nervous or scared the first summer you went away to camp? I may have been a bit nervous at first, but those feelings instantly vanished the moment I met my first counselor and got to experience all that Woodlands has to offer. You’re going to have the most epic, incredible, dare I say UNFORGETTABLE week of your life!

I have heard Woodlands fills up very quickly, is that right? Yes, that is correct. Oftentimes in less than 10 minutes.

I understand you are going to work at Woodlands this summer, is that right? Yes, I will be on the foodservice team. My secondary position is being a cabin’s booster.

What is the process to become a summer staff member at Woodlands?

The process for any summer staffer starts with filling out an application online, completing a one-way video interview, and then completing a phone interview with a full-time staffer at Woodlands. Then, after completing those steps, you’ll be notified whether or not you received a contract! ■

Spring to Life

A spring checklist to help take the guesswork out of seasonal home maintenance.

A HOME is the biggest investment many of us will make in our lifetime.

In order to ensure it stays in tip-top shape, it’s essential to stay on top of regular maintenance throughout the year. Sure, it can seem daunting, especially for new homeowners, but keeping up with regular repairs and check-ups will save you time, money, and a whole lot of hassle in the future. When planning services for the year, keep in mind that a home tends to stay in sync with the seasons: It comes to life in the spring and begins to go into hibernation mode in the winter. Aligning your home maintenance with the seasonal changes will help keep it running like a well-oiled machine. We’ve created a checklist to help take some of the guesswork out of scheduling your home maintenance this spring.

Come springtime, most of us are anticipating warmer temperatures, flowers, and a chance to dive into spring cleaning. But while you’re cleaning out your closets and pantry, don’t neglect upkeep on the exterior of your home! Spring is the perfect time to give your house a good once-over, inside and out.

Schedule an HVAC tune-up

Many homeowners don’t think about their heating or cooling system until something goes wrong. However, performing regular maintenance will help maximize the efficiency of your system, lower your energy bills, and avoid costly repairs. According to Suwanee’s Holtkamp Heating & Air, your HVAC system was designed to receive these important tune-ups twice per year (once for cooling, once for heating) to make sure you’re comfortable year-round. Schedule your cooling tune-up in early spring, before the heat arrives and HVAC companies get busy. During these appointments, a technician performs a thorough multi-point inspection of indoor and outdoor equipment, including tightening and lubricating moving parts, changing filters, checking drain lines, cleaning coils, and more. Ready to schedule a tuneup? Give Holtkamp a call at 770-271-7511 or visit HoltkampHVAC.com.

Reseed and fertilize your lawn

18

Prune crepe myrtles and roses

According to Chuck LeBar of Magnolia Lawn, spring is the perfect time for dormant pruning of crepe myrtles and roses. “Crepe myrtles can be used as hedge or barrier plants but are most commonly pruned to the form of a small tree,” he says. “To prune, remove any small ‘sucker growth’ from the base of the plant. Then the upper branches, including the seedheads, can be pruned down to where the branches are at approximately the diameter of an average person’s index finger. If you want the plant to grow higher, prune higher. If you want to reduce the size of the plant, prune lower. Just don’t commit what is commonly known as ‘crepe murder’ and prune down to the main trunks. This invites infestations of insects and diseases.”

3

Clean your gutters

Your gutters control the flow of rainwater on your house, protecting your roof, siding, and foundation.

When your gutters are neglected and become clogged, this can cause the roof to leak or water to infiltrate your house. Clean them at least twice a year, or more frequently, depending on how many trees surround your property and hang over your roof.

Spring is an ideal time to reseed your lawn, filling in empty patches before the summer heat. Plant your perennials, and give them plenty of water. Later in the spring, when the grass turns bright green again, it is time to fertilize the lawn. Be sure to use a fertilizer that provides all of the proper nutrients your lawn needs. It’s a great time to contact a professional to learn more about a yearlong fertilization schedule.

Aerate your lawn

Simply put, your lawn needs some room to breathe in order to look its best. Grass roots need air, water, and nutrients to grow thick and strong. When soil becomes compacted, it inhibits the flow of the essentials that support thicker, healthier turf growth.

This is where lawn aeration comes in. “Annual aeration is good for warm-season grasses like bermuda and zoysia,” says Magnolia Lawn’s Chuck LeBar.

“It is best done in warm weather when the grass is actively growing.” The ideal time to aerate your lawn is typically late April or early May. Need more information from the professionals? Give Magnolia Lawn a call at 770-831-6404 or visit MagnoliaLawn.com.

33
STANDARD ROSES CAN BE PRUNED DOWN TO ABOUT INCHES

Pressure wash your house

It’s important to take time to pressure wash your house at least once a year. We recommend giving your house a good wash in the spring, at the same time you’re tending to your lawn, planting flowers, and other general outdoor beautification tasks.

Pressure wash and reseal your deck

It's vital to thoroughly clean your deck once a year. Pressure washing the wood acts as a natural exfoliant and helps the protective sealers seep deep into the wood. Pressure washing and resealing your deck helps prevent the wood from splitting, graying, or cracking (plus, it get rid of all that nasty pollen!). This is also an ideal time to clean your outdoor furniture! ■

Better Together: Tips To Create Authentic Friendships

Friendships can be tricky. How do we start friendships, maintain them, and get beyond just surface chatting and laughs? We all want to have friendships where we are known and accepted, but this can be tough to develop, especially into adulthood. There can be many things that affect friendships such as moving to a new state, career changes, and busyness of life that seem to happen more frequently as we settle into adulthood. Even though life transitions and changes happen, there are still ways to build and maintain great friendships.

Here are some ways to have more authentic and connected friendships: Drop the facade.

⊲ Vulnerability is attractive. Think about the friendships you have enjoyed the most in your life; they were likely vulnerable and relatable. They helped you feel like you weren’t alone and you had someone who understood you and your feelings in the stage of life you were in. Try dropping your public image or facade with some trusted friends and see if they will do the same with you.

Remain curious.

⊲ Show interest and ask follow-up questions. Most people are looking for friends who listen well and regularly show they care. If you invest time and energy into your friends' lives they are more likely to invest more deeply into yours as well. Try asking these type of questions:

“Tell me more about … your vacation, your stressful day, etc.”

“Did you decide what you are going to do with the situation you were telling me about the other day? ”

36 Suwanee Magazine suwaneemagazine.com MARCH / APRIL 23 FAMILY MATTERS

“What is your greatest fear?”

“What are you looking forward to lately?”

These types of questions invite your friends to share more of who they are and what they are experiencing in authentic ways and will likely lead to more opportunities for you to do the same.

Be intentional.

⊲ Reach out and regularly spend time together. It is hard to have an authentic and connected friendship without quality time so find a rhythm for your friendship such as monthly dinners or daily walks. When you are together make a point to remember important dates, events, and experiences your friend shares. Everyone wants to be noticed and heard, so when you remember their anniversary or send them a card to celebrate their success they will know you are listening and this will help to deepen the connection in your friendship.

Don’t force it.

⊲ You will not click with everyone you meet and that is OK. You might find out you have different values, personalities, or availability that simply don’t line up. If you don’t click with someone, then trying to deepen a friendship that is not working will likely be frustrating and discouraging to both of you over time.

 Authentic friendships are a give and take, meaning there are times to vulnerably share and other times to listen and be curious. When you do find friends you trust, be intentional to invest your time, thoughtfulness, and vulnerability into the friendship as this can go a long way in building a deeper, more meaningful, and authentic friendship. ■

FROZEN DELIGHTS

SUWANEE’S RITA’S SERVES UP DELICIOUS SCOOPS OF ITALIAN ICE AND CUSTARD CREATIONS MADE FRESH EVERY DAY.

ITA’S HAS been serving scoops of delicious Italian ice and custard creations to happy Suwanee families for more than 15 years. As one of the charter members of Suwanee Town Center, the shop opened in 2007, the same year as the park, and has become a staple in the community. Locals flock to Rita’s for its endless flavor combinations and sweet confections, as well as its amazing customer service. Afterall, Rita’s slogan is “Ice. Custard. Happiness,” and they serve all three in droves — or freshly made waffle cones, if that’s more your thing.

The Bartow family took over the Suwanee location in 2022, and has continued to build upon the shop's rich and delicious history. Husband-wife team Jim and Barbara Bartow, along with their daughter, Mary, who serves as the shop’s manager, are dedicated to continuing Rita’s exceptional reputation for sweet treats and even sweeter service. After officially

39
FOOD AND DRINK

officially opening for the 2023 season back in February, the Bartows are excited to once again serve as our community’s favorite local sweet spot.

A Sweet History

While Rita’s may have officially established itself as a Suwanee favorite back in 2007, the original Rita’s got its start in 1984 when a former firefighter began selling Italian ice from the front porch of his home in Philadelphia.

He named the shop after his wife, Rita, used his mother’s recipes, and eventually began expanding into the area. Since then, Rita’s has grown into a worldwide franchise, with 600 stores in the U.S. and internationally, and is now one of the most beloved frozen treats around. Even with all of the growth and success, each shop still emphasizes quality and makes their ice fresh every day with real fruit, ensuring each customer leaves feeling happy and satisfied.

Taking over the already established Suwanee location was no small feat for the Bartows, but they happily accepted the challenge. “We moved here from Atlanta 27 years ago,” Barbara says.

“We love the kindness of our neighbors. Suwanee Town Center is such a pretty, positive, fun place, and we love being a part of the happiness.”

Rita’s quality of product is unmatched, with strict franchise standards for product freshness put into place after perfecting the recipe and techniques over 40 years. Plus, Rita’s has worked hard to establish itself as a happy place to treat yourself! The “treat team” is trained to offer exceptional service by offering samples, suggesting treats, and happily (and patiently!) answering any questions you may have.

40 Suwanee Magazine suwaneemagazine.com MARCH / APRIL 23
The Bartow family is excited to continue Rita’s sweet history of serving delicious frozen treats and bringing smiles to faces for more than 15 years.

The Goods

With more than 60 flavors to choose from, Rita’s Italian ice is a true standout. The shop offers 12-16 flavors daily, with selections changing each day. With so much variety, there’s an opportunity to try something new each time you visit. Mary says their most popular ice flavors are mango and cotton candy, which are available every day. Other popular choices include strawberry, cherry, Georgia peach, Swedish Fish, blue raspberry, piña colada, and chocolate. New flavors for 2023 include gummy bear, frozen coffee, peach ring, frozen lemonade, and blueberry lemonade. In the mood for ice but want a creamier option? Check out their cream ices, such as coconut cream, cheesecake, root beer float, and strawberries and cream. They also have a sugar-free option available every day.

While the ice is nice, sometimes only a frozen custard will do. Creamier than ice cream, custard has a rich and delightful texture that’s smooth and satisfying. Rita’s has a stellar lineup of handscooped custard with 12 daily rotating flavors. Their most popular custard flavors include Cookie Monster (with cookie chunks), mint chocolate chip, mint Oreo, strawberry, Reese’s peanut butter mudslide, banana cream pie, apple pie, and cookie dough. New 2023 flavors include Mexican chocolate, peach cobbler, pineapple upside down cake, pumpkin pie, and tiramisu.

If you can’t decide between an ice and a custard — choose both! The gelati is one of Rita’s most popular treats and features layers of custard and ice. Mary says she would recommend a gelati to a firsttime customer because it’s the best of both worlds. Plus, you

FOOD AND DRINK 41

best of both worlds. Plus, you can mix and match flavors to come up with your own custom order! Even with all the fun flavor creations, sometimes a soft-serve custard in a cone or cup just hits the spot. And while this may seem like a simple treat, the waffle cone is not to be missed! Unlike other places around town, Rita’s makes their own waffle cones and bowls fresh daily. Any time you step into the shop you’ll smell the sweet smell of waffle

batter being heated on the iron, a tasty reminder of the freshness of each of their treats. Don’t forget to top your frozen creation with one of Rita’s many toppings, including sprinkles, Oreos, chocolate chips, cookie dough, brownie bites, pie chips, nuts and more. You can also opt for their milkshakes, concretes (soft-serve custard with toppings blended in), blendinis (frozen ice and custard blended together), mistos (blended liquid custard and ice), and frozen drinks in any ice flavor. They also have take-home treats, like custard cookie sandwiches. Basically, if you

can dream it, Rita’s can probably make it.

A Suwanee Staple

There’s no doubt that our beloved Rita’s is in good hands with the Bartows. From their delicious custards and Italian ice, to their involvement in local events and continued support of local schools, the Bartows have worked hard to keep Rita’s a step above the rest. It’s a popular local hangout where families can come for a sweet treat, local high schoolers can get their first job experience, and kiddos can load up on extra sprinkles and smiles. A true win-win for all. ■

DIY RECIPES TO CELEBRATE PI DAY

There are two types of people in this world. Those who honor March 14th as an official celebration of the mathematical constant ‘pi’... and those who interpret this annual tradition as a guilt-free excuse to indulge in literal pie. I, myself, can (not surprisingly) be found taking advantage of the latter. So, what is Pi Day? The numeric value of pi is considered an infinite decimal, so it’s recognized by its abbreviation of the first 3 numbers: 3.14. Thus, we introduce the established holiday marked on 3-14 (March 14th). Now, back to pi with an ‘e’ - I feel that it’s my academic responsibility to share a few of my favorite pie recipes to commemorate the occasion!

S’mores Ganache Pie

Honestly, it’s never the wrong time for s’mores. Especially when it’s in pie form… and double points for a recipe that requires NO baking! Enjoy this super simple treat that comes together with just four ingredients.

Ingredients

Directions

*Recipe courtesy of crazyforcrust.com

Pro Tip: Homemade graham cracker crusts are easy to make and even more delicious! Using a fork, mix together 1 ½ cups graham cracker crumbs, ¼ cup packed brown sugar, and ½ teaspoon cinnamon. Add 7 tablespoons of melted butter and stir well. Firmly press into the bottom and up the sides of a 9-inch pie dish. If making a no-bake pie, just chill the crust for at least one hour before filling (cover if chilling longer). To make a baked crust, bake just until it begins to brown (about 10 minutes) in a 350 degree oven and then let cool completely before filling. For a baked pie, bake for 10 minutes in a 350 degree oven, add pie filling, then continue baking per recipe instructions.

Fried Fruit Pies

I know what you’re thinking… fair food at home? YES! Although this recipe implements a few shortcuts, it certainly doesn’t fall short on yumminess. Plus, it’s totally customizable with whatever filling fits the mood or flatters your tastebuds!

(Pi)zza Party

Who doesn’t love a good ol’ gooey, cheesy slice of pie? Pi Day is a perfect reason to have a DIY pizza party at home with the kiddos. Grab your favorite pre-made pizza crust or dough kit and marinara sauce. Lay out a spread of cheeses and toppings galore, then let the littles do the rest. When I make pizza at home, my go-to concoction is BBQ chicken. The base - providing the optimal balance of sweet and tangy - is made up of just three ingredients, all of which you probably already have stocked in your kitchen. Then I layer up the rest of the pizza with a few of my favorite enhancements that nicely complement this BBQ flavor.

LIVE MUSIC

Event coordinators are kicking off this year’s festival with not one, but TWO bands to keep you entertained all day long! As the gates open, Two Metre Rovers will be jamming out on the main stage to welcome festival attendees to the event.

TWO METRE ROVERS is the Irish alter ego of one of Atlanta’s favorite cover bands, the Six Foot Ramblers. The band is an outgrowth of the Ramblers’ love of folk and rock music and their deep respect for the storytelling found in Irish ballads. The contributions of artists like the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem to the American folk revival in the 1960s acted as a musical land bridge for the Two Metre Rovers to begin their exploration of the rich heritage of Irish music.

From heartfelt laments to tales of raucous fun, Two Metre Rovers take the audience on a journey of some of the best-known Irish songs both new and old. While the Rovers may be one of Atlanta’s newest Irish folk/rock bands, the selection of infectious Irish music is sure to make everyone feel a bit Irish deep down inside.

RADIO 80s BAND When it’s time to put down your beer and put on your dancing shoes, Radio 80s will be performing on the main stage from 3-5 p.m.! Radio 80s delivers a must-see show performing not just the usual Top 10 songs you hear from other ’80s tribute bands, but songs that go beyond making you realize how much more there was to love about the greatest decade of pop/ rock music! You’ll hear the all-time greatest hits by bands like Bon Jovi, Journey, Foreigner and Prince, as well as songs you forgot you loved from artists like Toto, Mr. Mister, Cutting Crew, Duran Duran, Howard Jones and so many more! No silly costumes! No big wigs! No bad spandex! Just amazing vocals, incredibly talented musicians, and high-energy fun!

*Pro Festival Tip: Make sure to head to the main stage around 2:30 p.m. to check out your fellow festival attendees in the costume contest. They make them WORK for their prizes and it is a show you don’t want to miss. Then stick around to jam out to your favorite hits with a few thousand of your closest friends!

This year’s festival will see the return of Giant Jenga and Peach State Cornhole (both activities pair great with beer). Plus, new to the festival this year is mini golf! Grab your favorite beer samples and make your way to our mini course to show off your golfing skills. A portion of the festival will be dedicated to all the fun, so be sure to grab your drinking buddies for some friendly competition.

One of the oldest craft breweries in the world, Göller was founded in 1514, back when it was called the "Alte Freyung" or "Old Sanctuary." It received this name because this brewhouse also served as a sanctuary for refugees from the law. As you can imagine, the brewery was a lively place, and even today it keeps the tradition alive with rowdy parties in the biergarten. Situated in the small region of Franconia (in upper Bavaria), known as the Beer Mecca of the world, Göller draws on the traditions of this famous region where beer began in Europe, and even today it's where you still find the best beer in the world. Göller beer wins copious awards from Germany and around the world, making it truly the best of the best! Twice the brewmaster was honored as the world's "Brewer of the Year" by the DLG for their "Beer of the Century", the Göller Dunkel. Family-run and focused on regional styles, Göller Brewery makes only craft beer for a select market. Imported exclusively into the USA by Ancient Craft Imports. "Gön dir ein Göller." It all started with brewing beer together on Monday nights in 2006. Friends, neighbors, and random strangers came together to brew and commune together. The beer quickly became more than just a weeknight hobby and has since grown into one of the most awarded breweries in the Southeast. There are now five Monday Night locations spanning Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama and North Carolina, brewing beers that they say are made for the weeknights. Monday Night Brewing exists to deepen relationships over some of the best beer in the country and shows no signs of slowing down.

Patterson died in a boating accident in 2021 — just three weeks after his wedding. His wife, Alyssa, found a fitting way to honor him, working with their favorite local brewery, StillFire Brewing, to brew a beer in his honor. The team named the IPA “Dude 21” (as Chandler used the term “dude” at the firehouse often, and rode Engine 21) and hosted a launch event last year to celebrate. After its massive success, the StillFire team hosted a charity event for the newly created Dude 21 Foundation in January 2023.

“At StillFire Brewing, we are proud to support the Dude 21 Foundation,” says Aaron Bisges, general manager of StillFire Brewing. “We have greatly enjoyed getting to know the Patterson family, and having Chandler’s friends and family join us at the beginning of the brewing process was very special. From what we’ve heard, Chandler was an incredible man, and it’s our pleasure to host this fundraiser in his honor.”

The event featured live music, food trucks, a special dedication, and a portion of proceeds from the re-release of the popular IPA were donated directly to the Dude 21 Foundation. At the end of the event, the StillFire team presented a check for over $5,000 to the Dude 21 Foundation. These proceeds will help support local firefighters with furthering their careers, as well as the parents, widows, and children of fallen first responders.

SUWANEE’S STILLFIRE Brewing has racked up the awards ever since they opened their doors back in 2019. Now, the worldclass brewing team is once again adding another gold medal from the Atlanta Cask Ale Tasting to their impressive roster.

After a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Atlanta Cask Ale Tasting returned to Bold Monk Brewing on January 21, marking the competition’s 17th year. Known as one of the Southeast’s most highly regarded craft beer events, this year's competition featured more than 60 breweries from across the state. Each brewery showed up to the contest with exclusive cask-conditioned Georgia ales, lagers, ciders and meads. The competition was fierce, and after a blind judging session was conducted by a panel of experts, StillFire’s Withershin Walter’s Old Ale brought home the gold medal in the Classic category. ■

SUWANEE YOUTH LEADERS BREAK GROUND ON THE CHEERS SPOT

GREAT THINGS take time. At least, that’s what the group of 23 Suwanee Youth Leaders (SYL) who are a part of the Cheers Project Committee have come to realize. Suwanee Recognized for Continued Commitment to Sustainability

 THE ATLANTA Regional Commission (ARC) upgraded the City of Suwanee to silver certification through the agency’s Green Communities Program for demonstrating leadership in sustainability practices. Suwanee earned certification points for working with Georgia Power to retrofit all existing street lights with LED lamps, which use 50-75 percent less energy.

“We’ve woven green initiatives into our longterm strategic plans for the city; being responsible environmental stewards is part of the fabric of Suwanee,” said Billqeece Naqawe, Assistant to the City Manager. “ARC’s Green Communities Program encourages municipalities

to build a more sustainable future.”

ARC developed the Green Communities Program in 2009 to recognize local governments that invest in programs and policies that lead to a more sustainable region. The nationally recognized program showcases the many ways that local governments can reduce their environmental footprint.

In metro Atlanta, 16 local governments — 11 cities and five counties — are currently certified under ARC’s Green Communities Program. This is the first program in the country to promote sustainability through a certification program for local governments.

The Night to Shine prom is an unforgettable experience that celebrates people with special needs. ‘Kings & queens’ for the night got the chance to walk the red carpet, enjoy the royal treatment, and dance the night away to a live band. Each special needs guest was paired with a buddy (many from local high schools and church groups) to chaperone and spend the evening with them, with over 700 buddies and 400 volunteers coming together to make the incredible night happen. Happy Feat is a nonprofit based in Suwanee that provides inclusive programs for individuals with special needs. For more information, visit happyfeat.org.

Quantum National Bank Donates $100,000 to Suwanee Public Art Program

 IN JANUARY, representatives from Quantum National Bank donated $100,000 to the City of Suwanee’s Art for All campaign. The first major contributor to the public art campaign, Quantum’s donation will support three signature public art pieces in Town Center on Main, Suwanee’s newest park that is currently under construction.

“Suwanee has been our home since our founding over 20 years ago,” said Quantum CEO Bryan Cohen. “We’ve watched the city grow and prosper along with

our bank. We appreciate the partnership we have with the city and are happy to be part of this exciting campaign.”

Quantum President Brad Day and Chief Deposit Officer Tyler Phillips joined Cohen to present the check to the City Council.

Suwanee Mayor Jimmy Burnette presented the representatives with a proclamation recognizing the relationship of over 20 years, proclaiming January 27, 2023 as ‘Quantum Bank Day’ in the City of Suwanee.

“What is so remarkable about our city’s thriving art program is that it has been accomplished primarily with private funding from residents and businesses like Quantum National Bank,” said Suwanee Assistant City Manager Denise Brinson. “Quantum has been a key part of our community since its founding in 1995. We appreciate this latest indication of their dedication and commitment to their hometown of Suwanee.”

Gwinnett

Clean &

Beautiful Shines Spotlight on its Green and Healthy Schools Program

WHILE MUCH of the work Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful (GC&B) tackles around Gwinnett County is highly visible, its efforts behind the scenes can be equally impactful. In an effort to foster an up-and-coming generation of environmental stewards among some of Gwinnett’s youngest citizens, GC&B has had a long-standing presence in Gwinnett County Public Schools through their shared Green and Healthy Schools Program. There are currently 79 elementary, middle and high schools represented in the program. Out of a desire to grow its Green and Healthy Schools network further, the Lawrenceville-based nonprofit is releasing a series of videos to illustrate the power of the program and its impact on educators and students alike.

To create the videos, Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful tapped into the talents of Green Shortz’ Tom Mills. The initial release of the Green ShortzGC&B collaboration showcases five videos with the promise of more content to follow. Beyond providing an overview of the Green and Healthy Schools Program, the videos highlight impactful initiatives within the program, including PlantIt Forward, Food Waste Warriors and Compost Connectors.

“Not only do we show these initiatives in action, but each video is supported by personal testimony from educators who have a hand in the application of projects like leading their students in the planting and maintenance of pollinator gardens, the collection and reporting of food waste, and the delivery of food waste to their school’s compost system,” said Schelly Marlatt, Executive Director of Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful.

To learn more about the Green and Healthy Schools Program — as well as the steps to being designated as a Green and Healthy School — teachers, administrators, parents and students can visit GwinnettCB.org.

ROBERTO “BETO” CORREA

OWNER, BETO'S TACOS

Chef Roberto “Beto” Correa, owner of Beto’s Tacos Inc., loves to share his culture and his passion for authentic Mexican food. In fact, you can get a taste of his popular Mexican cuisine at one of Beto’s Tacos' three locations in the Gwinnett area: Suwanee, Lawrenceville and Johns Creek. The first time you meet Beto, there is an undeniable sense of sincerity and a willingness to go above and beyond for his customers and the people who work for him.

PLEASE TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR FAMILY. My wife and I met for the first time working for the same company in Alpharetta. She was relocated to the Hotel Marriott Alpharetta, the same hotel that I was working for at the time. Silvia and I connected since the first day. She has a great personality and is very well connected with the people around her. She smiles all the time, and she created a great impact to our guests in the hotel — not only to our guests, but also to our coworkers.

She is from South America, specifically from Peru. At the

beginning of our relationship, she did not know I was from Mexico, since I never mentioned it. One day I took her to a Mexican restaurant, and I asked for a torta, which is a sandwich. In her country, a torta is a cake, so she was expecting a cake! This led to me finally telling her where I was from, and this was the beginning of our story. Silvia has a great talent and remembers everyone’s names and has a great impact on Beto’s. She has sacrificed a lot for me over the past 20 years and she is my life! I have two sons with Silvia, Mathew and Alex, who are 17 and 19 years old. Alex’s dream is to play professional soccer and Mathew dreams of film directing. They are working hard in school and help my family and me in business as well. My wife and I both work a lot in Beto’s Tacos, our family business.

When we have time to relax, we like to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee and talk about our goals and dreams that we want to achieve in the future for our company.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR CURRENT AND PAST CAREER. WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT IT? It all started 36 years ago in Nevada when I worked as a prep for a small Mexican store. A couple months later I applied for a property hotel that had their own restaurant and was offered the opportunity to go to school and become a chef. After working for multiple companies in the state of Nevada, specifically in the Vegas area, and gaining enough experience, I received an opportunity to come to Atlanta 23 years ago as a chef for Sheraton Hotel.

Throughout the years, I worked for multiple companies like Crown

Plaza and Chipotle. I have been in the catering business for 12 years in the Atlanta area. I have always worked seven days a week for many companies. The rewards are great from working hard.

What I love most is being able to feed people. Most caterers just drop off food. We create an experience of gathering, celebrating, and family wherever we go. We love to share our culture with so many different people. Seeing my employees happy brings me great joy! I try to instill in them that anything is possible for them, if they want it bad and work hard enough. When I retire one day, I hope to sell my restaurants to some of my staff and keep the business going.

WHAT ARE A COUPLE OF YOUR FAVORITE RESTAURANTS IN OUR

COMMUNITY? Sushi Nami and Bottles & Bones. I also love Korean BBQ.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED OR WORKED HERE? Four years.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT SUWANEE? I am very thankful for the people of Suwanee and to the City of Suwanee, who are all very supportive and feel like family to me. I love the family style we have here and the place that I want to live and raise my boys, and have my business.

WHAT CURRENT OR FORMER BUSINESS, OR PLACE, MAKES YOU FEEL THE MOST NOSTALGIC? The old building where Dillard’s BBQ was at the corner of Buford Highway and LawrencevilleSuwanee Road.

WHAT IS SOMETHING ON YOUR BUCKET LIST? More tailgating at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, white water rafting and kayaking in North Carolina. When I retire, I would like to open a fine-dining Mexican restaurant. Life is very short.

IF YOU COULD TAKE ANYONE TO LUNCH, DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO WOULD THAT BE AND WHERE WOULD YOU GO? I would take a good friend to StillFire Brewing if casual, and enjoy food from various restaurants in the area. In a more formal setting, I would take a friend to Bottles & Bones.
