Summertime Eats

AILING DOWN a food for our annual food competition was no easy task. During our brainstorming sessions we went back and forth over whether to try something new or revisit one of our favorites. We contemplated sweet treats and desserts. Maybe a brunch item? How about a mimosa pairing? After much debate, we decided on salads. Think about it: A salad can come in so many variations with fun toppings and zesty dressings. It seemed like a great chance to partake in the creativity and variety of our favorite local restaurants. Plus, salads are a perfect summertime food — light, fresh, colorful, and filled with veggies and all the good things.

For our 2023 Best Salad Contest , we invited a number of local restaurants to showcase the best salad from their menu. In the end, seven local restaurants answered the call and delivered an array of delicious salads to be judged by our esteemed panel of judges — as well as a “people’s choice” winner voted on by our Suwanee Magazine staff. Want to know who won? Flip to p. 24 to find out! This wouldn’t be the Food Issue without covering all of the culinary talents of our community. Flip over to p. 32 for our Restaurant Guide . Featuring a rundown of many of Gwinnett’s amazing restaurants, we hope it will serve as a handy guidebook to the many flavors that span our culinary landscape. If you need a caffeine fix, turn over to p. 46 for our Iced Coffee Crawl . Part research for the best iced coffee drinks in town and part selfish indulgence (I love coffee so much!), we asked five local coffee shops to recommend an iced coffee drink to our readers to help us survive the summertime heat while adding a little pep in our step.

We also had a chance to meet with the team behind Boxete Kitchen , a new restaurant concept located in Suwanee that focuses on delicious and diverse food offerings to-go. Turn to p. 42 to learn more about Boxete, and how this “virtual food court” is changing the way we experience cuisine. We also recently spoke

to The Lost Druid Founder, Robert Hopek, to learn more about the experience the brewery is bringing to the craft beer scene in Avondale Estates. With a commitment to community, The Lost Druid embraces a taproom-centric model with a wide variety of beer styles, while also offering delicious food on-site. Learn more on p. 52.

In addition to all of the delicious food content, we also have stories about two places that are very dear to our heart. First is a spotlight on Annandale Village on p. 13, a wonderful organization in our community that has nurtured self-worth, promoted independence, and fostered achievement among adults with developmental disabilities and acquired brain injuries for more than 50 years. Their Extra Mile 5K turns 10 this year, so mark your calendar for August 26 for an opportunity to participate in a great event for an even greater cause.

The second is an article about rebuilding the beloved PlayTown Suwanee playground. Nineteen years ago, the Suwanee community banded together to construct the original PlayTown Suwanee. Now, with the city's plans to develop the new Town Center on Main, PlayTown Suwanee prepares to be rebuilt, rejuvenated, and reimagined. I was excited to be a part of the volunteer committee to help provide feedback and support for this new era of PlayTown Suwanee. Turn to p. 66 to learn more about the reason for the rebuild and the plans for the future, then join me in October as we gather together once again to build the new PlayTown Suwanee for a new generation! I can’t wait!

CD rates?

Yes, with rising interest rates, bank CDs may be worth considering.

It has been many years since banks offered Certificate of Deposit rates in the range of 3% to 5%; the actual rate will depend on the amount of deposit and the length of time for the CD. Unfortunately, unless the CD interest rate is higher than the inflation rate, your purchasing power will shrink by the amount of the difference, or you will actually earn only a small return. For example, if the inflation rate is 4% and your CD pays 5%, your actual return would be a positive 1% — the difference. If the numbers were reversed, you would lose 1%.

However, there are other options you might want to consider. Historically, Investment-Grade Corporate Bonds have experienced significant gains the year following peak CD rates. When interest rates reverse course and trend back down, the value of bonds will generally rise.

Below are a few examples of peak CD rates and bond performance the following year:

• In August 1984, CD rates were at 11.24%. In 1985, Investment-Grade Corporate Bonds were up 27.2%.

• In February 1995, CD rates were 5.69%. In 1996, Investment-Grade Corporate Bonds were up 20.5%.

• In September 2000, CD rates were 5.53%. In 2001, Investment-Grade Corporate Bonds were up 13.3%.

• In June 2019, CD rates were 1%. In 2020, Investment-Grade Corporate Bonds were up 10%.1

Past performance is not a guarantee of future performance. However, a discussion with your trusted financial, tax and legal advisors about potential opportunities which may arise from changes in interest rates would be time well spent. Adjusting for new circumstances is a necessary requirement for long-term investing.

Suwanee's Annandale Village is the only non-profit residential community in the Southeast that serves adults with developmental disabilities and acquired brain injuries at all levels of care throughout an individual’s lifetime.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

Annandale Village

CREATING FREEDOM AND PEACE OF MIND FOR VILLAGERS AND THEIR FAMILIES.

OR MORE than 50 years, Annandale Village has been nurturing self-worth, promoting independence, and fostering achievement among adults with developmental disabilities and acquired brain injuries. Located in Suwanee and founded by Dr. and Mrs. Maxwell Berry in 1969, Annandale is the only organization in the Southeast and one of only three in the U.S. that serves individuals at all levels of care throughout their lifetime. The Maxwells founded Annandale for their daughter, wanting her to have the opportunity to lead a life that reflected self-worth, independence, and achievement. Today, Annandale continues to do just that, serving more than 200 individuals, with about 159 of them calling Annandale Village home and approximately 40 in their day program. There is currently a wait list for almost every level of care.

Fostering Fulfillment

⊲ Offering all levels of care means residents, or “villagers” as they are endearingly know, can stay at Annandale even when their need for care may change. According to Kayce

13 BUSINESS

Marketing Officer at Annandale Village, some of their beloved villagers have called Annandale home for more than 40 years. “When villagers come to live at Annandale, our hope and our goal is that this is their home for the rest of their life. As they age or as aspects of their disability may become more challenging, they can move through the continuum whether that’s in independent living, semi-independent living, assisted living or skilled nursing.”

Recently, one of their residents, Mary, who has lived at Annandale for 33 years, moved from the semi-independent community to assisted living. “On the day that she moved she told me, ‘I am so glad I get to stay home.’ That is like Annandale in a nutshell. She still gets to be around her friends and people she has developed lifelong relationships with; many of whom have become like family. Even though her needs have changed, she can still stay at home,” shared Pearce. “Whatever independence looks like for the individual, we want to foster that. We serve our villagers in what we call person-centered planning. We look at each villager and what they enjoy, and how they will have the most fulfilling life.”

14 Suwanee Magazine suwaneemagazine.com JULY / AUGUST 23

Many Annandale residents have jobs, including 18 villagers employed in the community, and 56 villagers working on campus or in Annandale’s on-campus workshop. The on-campus jobs could be in maintenance, housekeeping, or in the kitchen. The on-campus workshops are where companies will hire the villagers for fulfillment. For example, last year the Peachtree Road Race worked with Annandale to stuff bags for the race. There are also 11 villagers who volunteer in the community.

New at Annandale in the last few years is their All-In program, a communitybased independent living program where Individuals with mild to moderate disabilities live in the community with support from Annandale. They are currently serving 13 individuals in Suwanee and Atlanta. Annandale is also wrapping up a $6 million capital campaign to renovate the Program Center, which serves as the hub of villager activity on their campus, where all their programs and services operate out of. They are planning to break ground in January 2024 on that project.

Annandale Extra Mile 5K & 1 Mile Walk/Run

⊲ This year marks the 10th anniversary for Annandale’s Extra Mile 5K. The familyfriendly event serves as one of Annandale’s largest fundraisers and will take place on August 26 in Town Center Park at 8 a.m. “The Extra Mile really gives us a chance to show the community that our villagers are thriving, and to see they

are an important part of the community,” shared Pearce.

The Extra Mile 5K has something for everyone. It is a Peachtree Road Race qualifier, and they give out awards for top finishers, but they welcome runners and walkers of all abilities, including those with strollers, wheelchairs, and dogs.

The event will kick off with the National Anthem performed by the Annandale choir and includes a celebration after the race with a live DJ, the Kona Ice truck, games and more.

Last year they raised more than $125,000 through teams, sponsorships, and individuals. They are hoping to beat that number this year.

Annandale invites individuals and teams to come out and participate in the Extra Mile 5K/1K. They also welcome volunteers at Annandale. Many of the volunteer opportunities are companion based, where people can come and make a significant impact by participating in programs and activities with villagers. There is also the opportunity for fundraising as well as corporate sponsorships or volunteer opportunities.

Annandale needs to raise about $3 million a year to sustain operations, and they can’t do it without support from the community. ■

FAMILY MATTERS

Understanding Teens

Parenting can be complicated at times. Kids are ever changing and just when you think you have a handle on a stage they get older and they move into a new stage. Even more, parents are trying to keep a good relationship through all the changes and stages. Raising young humans is life changing. I often say to parents, “Kids and teens learn as much from us as we learn from them.” After over a decade of specializing in teen counseling, I continue to see that teens have a lot to offer the world. They tend to seek creative exploration, social engagement, and new experiences which many adults could benefit from having a little more of in their life. Teens can change the world for the better but they need guidance along the way. The tenison often comes when parents and caregivers offer this guidance in ways that feel limiting and restrictive to teens.

Tips to navigate the complicated teen years

Know the teen brain.

⊲ The teen brain is remodeling to prepare for adulthood. It is normal for teens to take risks, seek new experiences, and want to be with their friends more than their parents. Similar to when a home is being remodeled and different rooms are in transition at different times to get to the end result, different parts of the teen brain are in transition too. This means sometimes you get a child response and other times you get an adult response. Of course, this is confusing for parents as this often means your help is needed in some areas while the teen is ready to confidently step into other areas. This is normal and not a rejection of you as a person or a reflection of your teen’s love for you, but it does mean it is helpful to find effective ways to communicate about these quickly changing needs.

Encourage exploration.

⊲ Teens naturally want and need to explore the world around them. They need to venture away from what is familiar to become a successful adult; so there is a purpose to this desire to explore. Support and guide this normal part of adolescence. Provide new experiences and opportunities for your teen to explore and challenge themself. They will likely seek these opportunities regardless of your support but when you encourage exploration you are more likely to continue to have influence on ways to safely explore.

20 Suwanee Magazine suwaneemagazine.com JULY / AUGUST 23
GET CURIOUS ABOUT THE PERSON THEY ARE BECOMING; ASK ABOUT THEIR THOUGHTS ON WORLD ISSUES, TALK THROUGH THEIR DECISIONS, AND ASK ABOUT THEIR FRIENDSHIPS.

Listen with curiosity.

⊲ Teens are adults in the making and often have many developing thoughts and opinions. Get curious about the person they are becoming; ask about their thoughts on world issues, talk through their decisions, and ask about their friendships. The more caregivers listen with curiosity the more teens tend to let them into their personal world. The parent role shifts from making decisions for younger children to helping the teen learn and develop good decision-making skills through guidance. Guidance could be asking questions to help expand the teen’s thoughts or putting a limit on a decision that could be a safety risk. This helps teens

JENNIFER WILMOTH, LMFT

to develop decision-making skills for launching into adulthood and soon making their own decisions.

Teen brains are remodeling to move from childhood into adulthood. While these changes can be confusing for parents at times, the more parents lean into the natural changes in this stage the more likely they will be able to keep a good connection with their teen to offer guidance. Teens want to explore the world but that doesn’t mean they do this alone or disconnected from their parents or other adults who can help and offer guidance along the way. ■

STAFF PICK: Tomiyama Sushi•Hibachi•Thai

Tomiyama opened in December 2021 as Suwanee’s first and only hibachi restaurant, as well as the only restaurant to serve sushi, hibachi, and fine Thai cuisine under one roof. Tomiyama offers great quality food in a bright, modern atmosphere, and is now proudly catering to the halal community. Their five-star chef from Bangkok uses premium ingredients and world-class techniques to create a unique experience that boasts Angus Choice beef, New York strip, filet mignon, and fresh seafood. The best seller on the hibachi menu is the Trio, featuring steak, shrimp, and chicken, as well as the combo filet mignon and shrimp. The crunchy tuna roll, yummy tummy roll, tuna tartar, and volcano roll are all crowd favorites on the sushi menu. If you’re in the mood for Thai food, be sure to check out the crispy duck with basil sauce, Massaman curry duck, and the beef, pork, chicken, and lobster pad Thai. 315 Peachtree Industrial Blvd., Suite 100, Suwanee, 678-765-0880, TomiyamaSushi.com

PARTY HACKS with Nat

Backyard Barbeque

Sweet, sweet summertime!

There are few things I enjoy more than feeling the warm sunshine on my skin and hearing the satisfying sizzle of a grill. The one thing that makes it that much sweeter thoughsharing this seasonal bliss with friends and family. Whether you’re bonding in the swimming pool or engaging in some friendly yard game competition, there’s no doubt about one thing - we can all agree there WILL be food involved. So keep reading, because when it comes to drinks and dessert, I’ve got you covered. Wherever your crew (and cravings) lead you this summer, gather around that patio table and soak it all in!

BACKYARD BEVERAGE HACKS

Keepin’ it Cool

⊲ We all know it can be a challenge to keep drinks cold during those sunshiny shindigs. And while a traditional cooler is always a foolproof solution, it doesn’t tend to add much personality to your backyard barbeque. If you want to elevate your drink display - while maintaining that ice cold status - consider one of these more creative options:

Watermelon Punch Bowl

You can always count on a big, juicy watermelon to unite people over a hot summer day. But, are you truly getting the most out of your melon? Unless you’re repurposing the rind as a punch bowl, I’d bet not! Don’t miss out on this clever opportunity to shine your hosting skills bright. Just chop off one end of a watermelon, completely hollow out the inside, then refill it with a refreshing spritzer of your choice. Not only have you successfully nailed an impressive DIY serving piece, but you also have crisp bites of watermelon as a snack or garnish.

*PRO TIPS: Pay attention to the shape of your watermelon. You don’t want to choose one too oblong that will have trouble standing up. You can also keep the watermelon rind in the freezer (after hollowing it out) until right before serving to help keep the refreshment extra cold!

Water Balloons: As an alternative to ice, try filling small balloons with water and freezing them overnight. Then just toss the frozen balloons into your preferred beverage bucket along with the drinks. Not only does this add a pop of color, but these larger spheres won’t melt near as

quickly as your standard ice chips.

Kiddie Pool: With the wide selection of kiddie pools available, you’re guaranteed to find a color that matches your party. Throw in your bottles or cans, load it up with ice, and let guests enjoy sifting through the pool of drinks.

⊲ SINCE THIS is our annual food issue and the highlighted dish is salad, it’s only fitting that I contribute a salad recipe, right? Done. Allow me to introduce you to my personal favorite: the dessert salad. Yup, we’re trading a bed of greens for a foundation of sugar, then folding in freshly sliced fruit. With a light and airy texture - and (surprisingly) not overly sweet - this dessert pairs perfectly with any spread on a hot, summer day. I like to use strawberries, blueberries, and blackberriesparticularly for those patriotic holidays - but bananas and grapes would work well, too! This recipe yields a pretty large batch, so it’s ready to be indulged with a crowd at your next backyard barbecue.

Berry Cheesecake Salad

Ingredients:

- 5 ounces (1/2 a bag) of miniature marshmallows

- 16 ounces vanilla yogurt

- 1 (8-ounce) tub of Cool Whip, softened at room temperature

- 1 (3.4-ounce) box of Cheesecake Jello-O Instant Pudding and Pie Filling, plus 2 cups of milk

- 16 ounces of fresh strawberries, sliced

- 16 ounces of fresh blueberries

- 12 ounces of fresh blackberries, halved

Directions:

1. In a large mixing bowl, prepare the instant cheesecake mix per the package’s instructions.

2. Stir in the yogurt, then fold in the Cool Whip.

3. Add the marshmallows and berries, then stir again.

4. Refrigerate for at least one hour. Garnish with any extra berries and serve cold!

Digital-Age Dining

SUWANEE’S BOXETE KITCHEN IS THE FUTURE OF TO-GO DINING, OFFERING MULTIPLE TASTY RESTAURANT CONCEPTS UNDER ONE ROOF

ESTLED IN a quiet corner of Suwanee's Plaza shopping center, Boxete Kitchen has emerged as a shining example of the future of dining since opening earlier this year. In an era dominated by convenience and on-demand services, where everything from meals to groceries to cars can be delivered to your doorstep, Boxete Kitchen sets itself apart by offering a unique dining experience focused on diverse menu items with a digital-age mindset. It's like stepping into a virtual food court, where you'll find a collection of restaurant concepts under one roof, each specializing in a variety of cuisines, including Soul Food, Korean, Mexican, and much more. And while the old-school mall food court was focused on dining in, Boxete Kitchen’s virtual food court is focused on dining out.

⊲ Whether you prefer to order to-go at their brick-and-mortar location through their user-friendly kiosks, place a pick-up order on their website, or have your favorite dishes delivered through popular services like DoorDash, Boxete Kitchen has you covered. They understand the modernday need for fast, hassle-free dining experiences, without compromising on taste or quality — and they have a lot of delicious dishes to choose from.

“Our main goal is to make it very convenient and fast, so it's easy for anyone to come and browse the menu offerings,” says Sarah Cha, Boxete Kitchen Operations Coordinator. “Not only that, it can be difficult to find a place that acts as a one-stop shop for all different types of food. But that's the goal at Boxete Kitchen

— at one facility you can order multiple concepts that include Chinese, Japanese, burgers and more.”

Dine Around the World

Boxete Kitchen’s restaurant concepts include Pokemix, which offers fresh and tasty customizable poke bowls; Seoul De Mayo, a fun Korean twist on tacos, burritos, bowls, and quesadillas; Eclipse 50/50 Burger, whose highlight is its 50% beef and 50% bacon burgers; and Noodle Factory, a concept popular for its variety of creative noodle bowls, among many others.

Perhaps one of Boxete Kitchen’s most popular concepts is Dorothy Mae’s Soul Food Kitchen, which cooks up soulful servings of jumbo fried shrimp, chicken wings, and fried fish filets with classic Southern sides like cornbread, potato salad, mac ’n’ cheese, candied yams, collard greens and more. Just don’t forget to order a slice of sweet potato pie to round out your meal. While Boxete Kitchen’s menu features delicious dishes from a number of concepts, their street food items really stand out. Street food has gained popularity in recent years, offering a convenient and flavorful way to experience diverse cuisines. At Boxete Kitchen, their mission is to bring the essence of meaningful street food to their patrons, allowing them to embark on a global culinary journey without leaving Suwanee. Whether it's Egglicious’ Korean street toasts or Noodle Factory’s noodle bowls, there’s something for everyone.

In addition to their to-go savory food options, Boxete Kitchen’s menu also boasts an array of drinks and desserts. From refreshing boba teas to coffee drinks, their beverage menu is designed to satisfy every craving. They even have Milk-ish drinks, a popular fusion of milkshakes and trendy flavors like Fruity Pebbles and Jolly Pong cereals. But perhaps the crown jewel of their sweets menu is Stuf'd Cookies, Boxete’s answer to the popular Crumbl Cookies craze. These large, doughy cookies are stuffed with creamy fillings like marshmallow, milk chocolate, peanut butter, and cream cheese. Trust us, you’ll want to order one — or two, or three.

Innovative Dining

In a world where everything is at your fingertips, Boxete Kitchen stands as a beacon of innovation that redefines the concept of a food court with a virtual experience that is perfect for the modern-day diner. With a diverse (and growing!) menu featuring creative concepts offering a variety of cuisines, patrons can embark on a culinary journey around the world without ever leaving the comfort of their hometown. So, whether you order online for delivery or pickup, or take advantage of ordering in-house at one of their kiosks, Boxete Kitchen seamlessly and deliciously caters to the fast-paced lifestyles of a digital world. ■

PORCH POUNDERS THAT ARE SURE TO HELP BEAT THE HEAT!

50 Suwanee Magazine suwaneemagazine.com JULY / AUGUST 23

ummertime is in full swing! Most of us are spending our down time at the pool, lake, beach or park. Though we all love our Cabernet, Zinfandel and Syrah, it’s time for them to move on over and let some lighter reds, rosés, and white wines take center stage.

⊲ Looking for something without bubbles this summer? There are plenty of options.

Sauvignon Blanc is a delightful choice. French Sauv Blancs are refreshing and mineral driven. L’Aumonier Sauvignon Blanc or Les Champs Clos Sancerre are lovely choices.

Ready to try something new?

Sip Happens has a plethora of white varietals to keep it fun in the sun! How about a Vinho Verde, Vermentino, or a lovely un-oaked Chardonnay? And if you’re ready to get crazy, try a Muscadet, Picpoul, Arneis, Grenache Blanc, or a Rioja Blanco. All these varietals are excellent selections to chill things down and pair beautifully with seafood dishes.

If you’re in the mood for a red wine, take heart. There are plenty

Róse

When talking about wines that keep you cool, we cannot forget to mention the Queen of Summertime Wines: Rosé! Did you know that Rosé is made from red varietals? Their color is determined by the amount of time the juice spends in contact with the grape skin, which is why some are a delicate, pale color and others are a more vibrant pink. Try Rosé made from all kinds of varietals Revelation Rosé, from Columbia Valley, Washington; from Murcia, Spain; or Domaine Chateaumar Rosé, a Grenache Rosé from Rhone Valley, France.

Sparkling Wines

Sparkling wines are always a playful addition to summertime. Keep it light and refreshing with sparkling wine from Spain. A Cava, like Naveran, is a perfect bubble for the outdoors — and partners wonderfully with orange juice for tasty mimosas!

of options to enjoy in the summertime heat. Stay away from heavier, high alcohol reds with big tannins. You’ll fare better with red wines that maintain good acidity and have lower tannins.

Pinot Noir fans will always be in a happy place on a warm day. With delicate berry flavors and high acidity, this light- to mediumbodied wine is a perfect fit. Pinots from Willamette Valley, like Patricia Green Reserve or Kate Arnold , are always a wonderful choice.

Old World wines offer an amazing array of choices when it comes to lighter reds. From France, try a Gamay from Beaujolais. You’ll never go wrong with a Côtes du Rhône. These beautiful blends of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre are summertime perfection. Domaine Lazaret Ventoux or Château du Trignon are excellent selections.

Winemakers are making wines that are much more portable — easy to take on the go to the pool, lake, or beach! Don’t sleep on wines in a can, plastic bottles, or even paper cartons. Many of these wines are organic and are in containers that are eco-friendly, bpa-free and, most importantly, taste great!

Don’t fret, if your palate prefers to lighten up in the summertime, Sip Happens has you covered. Our goal is boutique wine, simplified. With more than 400 wines to choose from, we are happy to help you find the perfect wine to keep the good times rolling! ■

The Lost Druid Brewery, Distillery & Gastropub

AVONDALE ESTATES BREWERY CRAFTS EXCEPTIONAL BEERS AND COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS.

he Lost Druid's commitment to community, diverse beer offerings, and innovative concepts like its distillery have made it a unique and beloved fixture in Avondale Estates. Whether you're seeking a delightful brew, delicious food, or a welcoming space to connect with friends, The Lost Druid is a mustvisit destination. We recently had the chance to catch up with The Lost Druid Founder, Robert Hopek, to learn more about the experience the brewery is bringing to the local craft beer scene.

52 Suwanee Magazine suwaneemagazine.com JULY / AUGUST 23
WHAT ’ S BREWING
Interview by Lizzy James / Photos Courtesy The Lost Druid

How did you get involved in the craft beer industry? The Lost Druid Brewery is the brainchild of myself, Robert, and my wife, Stacia. Prior to venturing into the brewing industry, I was involved in the world of technology entrepreneurship, working with breweries and restaurants along the way. My passion for brewing began 23 years ago when I started home brewing. When Senate Bill 85 (SB85) passed in 2017, allowing for more favorable business models, we saw the opportunity to bring our vision to life. I handle the brewery and distillery operations, while Stacia manages the taproom, kitchen, events, and general operations.

What is the story behind your name? The name "The Lost Druid" has a personal and spiritual connection for me. During a conversation with an old friend, who had created a Druid character in

Dungeons & Dragons, the term "Lost Druid" was born. The notion of a Druid's connection to nature resonated with me, given my love for the natural world. As I delved deeper into Druid history, I discovered several beerrelated associations, reinforcing our decision to adopt the name. It also holds significance for me personally, as I was born on the Winter Solstice, a significant day for the Druids.

Why did you choose Avondale Estates as the location for your brewery? We scouted various locations in Atlanta but wanted to build something different and community-oriented. Avondale Estates caught our attention as a city undergoing revitalization, with ambitious city plans on the horizon. We wanted to contribute to the community's growth and become a local fixture. Avondale Estates offered the foot traffic we desired, allowing us to create a welcoming taproom-centric environment where people could connect over great food and beer. The city and its residents have been incredibly supportive throughout our journey, and we're thrilled to witness Avondale Estates flourish.

What has community support been like since opening your doors? The support from our community has been nothing short of amazing. We're grateful to see

familiar faces returning week after week, turning their visits into fullday experiences, enjoying meals, and savoring our beverages in the company of friends and family. Our taproom has become a place where people gather, creating an extended family-like atmosphere. The true test of our community support came during the challenging times brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. The friends and families we had already connected with stepped up to support us, ensuring our survival. Their generosity has played a vital role in our continued success.

What sets you apart from other Georgia breweries? The passage of SB85 in 2017 allowed us to embrace a taproom-centric model, offering a wide variety of beer styles and delicious food on-site. We aimed to create an inclusive space that caters to everyone's tastes. Being the first brewery in Georgia built from the ground up with a kitchen was a significant milestone for us. We take pride in offering small plates that complement our brews, allowing our patrons to enjoy a complete sensory experience. Our emphasis on variety, community engagement, and pioneering unique concepts, like our distillery, distinguishes us from other breweries in Georgia.

Tell us a little bit about your brewing team. Our "hands-on" brewing team primarily consists of

myself and our lead brewer, Michael Aube. However, we involve several members of our staff, including Sarah, Anthony, and Kay, in various brewing activities. Michael oversees the day-to-day brewing operations, enabling me to focus on expanding our spirits business.

What is your best seller in the taproom? At The Lost Druid, we don't have a single flagship beer as we focus on offering a wide range of styles. However, recently, our Kolsch "Reaper of Souls" and Classic-American lager "Revival" have been quite popular. Nevertheless, we've brewed nearly 400 different beers over the past four years. Our "tarts" (sours), IPAs, and fruit-forward hard seltzers have always garnered attention. With 25 taps of variety, there's always something new to discover.

If you could recommend a seasonal beer for readers to try, what would it be? Unlike larger breweries, we don't adhere strictly to seasonal releases. While we do emphasize certain styles during specific seasons, we encourage our patrons to follow their preferences. If you desire a strong Imperial Stout during summer or a light, crisp lager in the cold of winter, we fully support your choices. Our menu reflects the belief that a good beer can be enjoyed at any time, catering to diverse palates.

Where can readers find your beer besides the taproom? We have a limited number of kegs available for distribution to other craft beer establishments throughout Georgia, from Lake Allatoona to Savannah. While we don't currently sell cans or bottles in the retail market, you can find our beer at various beer festivals and events. We work hard to accommodate inquiries from bars, restaurants, and growler shops, ensuring our beer reaches enthusiasts beyond our taproom.

Do you currently host any events in your taproom? Absolutely! We host a range of events to engage with our community. Every Wednesday, we have Team Trivia, which was rated among the top 10 in Atlanta by EATER. Additionally, we organize a stitching and conversation meetup

twice a month and offer live music performances weekly. Throughout the year, we host both public and private events, including school fundraisers and special appearances by Santa and Mrs. Claus during Avondale's Winter Wanderland event.

Any upcoming news or events that the community should know about?

We're excited to celebrate our fourth anniversary in June. Additionally, we recently introduced new terpeneinfused spirits, which are available

in cocktails, on the rocks, and for purchase in bottles. Our first bourbon is also now available. Furthermore, AvondALE Day, returning in October, commemorates Avondale Estates being named the Best Small Town beer scene in 2021 and 2022. This event showcases the craft beer venues in the neighborhood and offers visitors a collectible glass.

The Lost Druid is located at 2866 Washington St. in Avondale Estates. For a complete beer list and to stay up to date on taproom events, visit TheLostDruid.com or follow them on social media.

 IN THE fall of 2022, the City of Suwanee sent out the call for old trophies and other outdated relics of past glory. Expecting a few hundred, the city received a few thousand. They were delivered by the truckload to artist Phil Proctor to create an awe-inspiring giant trophy out of many: the Ultimate Participation Trophy! The new public art piece was unveiled in Town Center Park on April 29, 2023, during the Suwanee Arts Festival. Funding for this project was provided by a grant from Gwinnett Creativity

Fund , which works to provide support for arts and cultural initiatives within Gwinnett County. The Gwinnett Creativity Fund is supported by Gwinnett County and managed and administered by Explore Gwinnett.

Student Art on Display at Norcross Library

 NORCROSS GALLERY & Studios, in partnership with the City of Norcross, hosted Mark Mason Karelson to jury the exhibition “Reflections at the Rectory.” Karelson is a familiar face in Atlanta’s contemporary art scene, frequently featured in ArtsAtl. An alumnus of Rutgers University, he is the founder of Mason Fine Arts and Events, now located in Buckhead’s newly burgeoning gallery district on Miami Circle.

With painstaking care, Karelson selected four artworks whose artists received ribbons and cash awards for honorable mention through first prize. He was so impressed with the overall quality of the work on view and exclaimed that it was so consistently good, he donated his stipend so that every student artist participating received a gift card. Art supply store Sam Flax provided generous gift cards to every ribbon winner as well.

Students who received awards include Grace Peagler from Norcross High School, Honorable Mention; Maggie Burns from Norcross High School, Third Place: Angelique Concepcion from NHS, Second place; and Noelle Kreiner from Paul Duke, First Place.

The winning artwork will be on display at Gwinnett County Library’s Norcross branch through September 1, 2023. The Norcross branch is located at 5735 Buford Highway.

A New Chapter for Playtown Suwanee

SUWANEE ICON TO BE REBUILT BY COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS FOR A NEW GENERATION OF CHILDREN TO ENJOY

LAYTOWN SUWANEE has long stood as a cherished symbol of community spirit and childhood adventure.

Nineteen years ago, the Suwanee community banded together to construct the original PlayTown Suwanee, a beloved old-school wooden playground that captured the imaginations of our kiddos. Now, with the city's plans to develop the new Town Center on Main, an exciting chapter unfolds as PlayTown Suwanee prepares to be rebuilt, rejuvenated, and reimagined.

The vision for PlayTown's revival is set in motion by the City of Suwanee and an enthusiastic volunteer committee, collaborating closely with Leathers & Associates, the very same designer and project management team that spearheaded the original community build. Their expertise and passion promise to honor the spirit of the original playground while introducing new elements that will thrill a new generation of children.

Currently, the City of Suwanee is collaborating with volunteers and Leathers & Associates to design the new playground. Then in October, Suwanee will once again gather as neighbors, friends, and volunteers to bring the new PlayTown Suwanee to life. This community-build event will not only forge lasting memories but also reinforce the essence of what makes Suwanee such a remarkable place to live. In anticipation of the unveiling of the new PlayTown Suwanee design, we spoke with Kimberly Towne, Suwanee's Events Coordinator, to learn more about

the decision behind the rebuild and the process for bringing new life to PlayTown Suwanee.

Tell us about the original PlayTown Suwanee. When was it built? What was the process? The original PlayTown Suwanee was built in 2004 over a five-day period by 1,000 community volunteers. Much like the rebuild of version 2.0, the city solicited input from local children and the design team incorporated their suggestions into the creation of PlayTown. The designers are adept at interpreting the big ideas of kids into actual structural elements. For example, “I want to fly!” translates to incorporate swings, slides, and bouncy components.

Why not renovate the current playground? What led to the decision to build a brand-new playground?

We explored rehabbing it, but ultimately it made

Interview by Alicia Carter Photos courtesy City of Suwanee

In 2004, the Suwanee community gathered together to help build the original PlayTown Suwanee. The build took five days with 1,000 volunteers.

even more sense to rebuild PlayTown Suwanee with modern, durable materials and incorporate some new features. (Playground trends have come a long way in 20 years!) We are committed to using environmentally friendly construction materials, including recycled structural plastic and recycled composite lumber. Both are earth-friendly, long lasting, and virtually maintenance-free.

With the construction of Town Center on Main, this seemed like the perfect time to give our beloved PlayTown a much-needed facelift, while also providing a new generation of parents the opportunity to be involved in a truly impactful project.

What is the process for building and designing the new playground?

The city has contracted with Leathers & Associates – the designer and project management team behind the original community build – to return to Suwanee to help modernize PlayTown Suwanee for a new generation. Since 1971, Leathers has helped build more than 3,800 playgrounds across all 50 states (and in seven other countries, too!). Leathers has helped guide us through the entire process, including facilitating visits with over 300 kids from 20-plus elementary school classrooms within the Suwanee city limits to gather ideas from playground experts! We also received drawings and ideas from lots of other children through our website.

Tell us how this will fit into the new Town Center on Main? PlayTown

Suwanee is located in the southwestern corner of the 25-acre Town Center on Main site. Town Center on Main, along with PlayTown Suwanee and the DeLay Nature Park, will transform the area, creating a cohesive “neighborhood” to encompass the Suwanee library and Fire Station 13. We will also be rerouting Main Street, which will shift around the park and exit onto Suwanee Dam Road at the traffic signal and the fire station. This shift will close the existing median break on Suwanee Dam Road at the existing Main Street, greatly improving the safety and traffic flow at that intersection.

67 CITY
BUZZ

Once completed, Town Center Park and Town Center on Main will function as a unified space, linked by Station Park (located next to the police station) and the pedestrian tunnel under the railroad. The topography of the new park will allow it to overlook Town Center, further enhancing the relationship of the two spaces.

When will the new playground design be introduced to the public?

The hope is to unveil the design in mid-July. Much like the original, PlayTown Suwanee version 2.0 will be completely unique and reflective of our community. All designs created by Leathers & Associates meet or exceed ASTM International Playground Safety Standards, CPSC Safety Guidelines and ADA. Every one of their designers and construction consultants are certified playground safety inspectors –PlayTown 2.0 will be inspected and certified upon completion.

What is a community-built playground? How can the community volunteer?

What are the qualifications?

A community-built playground is when the community comes together to install a commercial-

grade playground with the supervision of a professional installer. The experience offers a rare opportunity for individuals to collectively give something back to their community, resulting in a beautifully constructed, unique expression of shared pride. We're looking for volunteers who aren't afraid to roll up their sleeves and get their hands dirty (or covered in paint, or cement, or whatever else we may need). We need volunteers of ALL abilities and interests – whether you are a construction expert, a little bit handy, or have never even held a hammer – we’ve got a place for you! Shifts will range from 2-3 hours up to the full day (or week)! Kids ages 10-13 years can volunteer alongside a parent. Volunteer opportunities for committee roles and workday sign-ups will be announced soon.

When will the new build take place? October 9-15, 2023 (weather permitting).

Anything else readers should know? Participating in a community-built playground is such an incredibly unique and “Suwanee” experience. It builds not just a play structure, but friendships and memories! ■

Interview & Photo by Julie Perdue

PLEASE TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR FAMILY. I have one brother. I have a son and a daughter, and just inherited three stepchildren! I just got married in March of this year. I have three granddaughters by my daughter. I met my husband six and a half years ago and we both had little kids at home. So, we took our time dating for a few years before marrying. All of the kids are amazing, warm-hearted and wonderful. We are all really happy!

TELL US ABOUT YOUR CURRENT AND PAST CAREER. WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT IT? I was a special education teacher in Miami and then in Atlanta. After my second child was born, my dad suggested that I get into the world of financial planning. Although I loved teaching, it was difficult to spend time with my kids and

attend their practices, events, etc. I decided to study and get my licenses and my dad was someone to whom I could ask anything. He was a great mentor. We have always had a great relationship. His strengths are my weaknesses and vice versa. I think that women, in particular, felt comfortable with a female financial

planner from the very beginning. I am incredibly grateful to be running this business with my dad.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED OR WORKED HERE? I moved here in 1998 during my second year of teaching. We now live in Alpharetta, but our office is in Suwanee.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE RESTAURANT? We love Cheeky and I oftentimes take clients to Ippolito's. Sushi Nami is my absolute favorite!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT SUWANEE? It’s a beautiful city with a relaxed

feel, with all of the conveniences close by. It feels safe and has a small-town feel.

WHAT CURRENT OR FORMER BUSINESS, OR PLACE, MAKES YOU FEEL THE MOST NOSTALGIC ABOUT SUWANEE? One of my first dates with my husband, Mike, was the Suwanee Wine Fest. We love it! We always meet new people there and enjoy all the different types of wine.

IF YOU COULD TAKE ANYONE TO LUNCH, DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO WOULD THAT BE? WHERE WOULD YOU GO? I would take my mom (who has passed) and we would go to our favorite restaurant, Sakura, in Coral Gables, Florida.

WHAT IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PLACE YOU HAVE EVER BEEN? I would have to say New Zealand. It’s so diverse and the landscape is breathtaking.

WHAT WAS THE FIRST MOVIE YOU REMEMBER SEEING IN A THEATER? I went to see Caddyshack — but was definitely too young to be seeing it!

TELL ME SOMETHING THAT’S ON YOUR BUCKET LIST. I want to take a tr ip to Maldives in the South Pacific. There are many places that I would like to see, but this would be the top place.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A CROWD OF PEOPLE?

In my 52 years, I have learned to let the little things go!
