SUMMER FUN IS CALLING

HIS TIME of year is always emotional for me. As we move into the warmer months and the flowers bloom and the kids finish up another year of school, I’m reminded that the world keeps spinning, the days continue to move along, and the years begin to go by at a quicker pace. As Ferris Bueller once famously said, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”

Once I became a mom, the years really started to fly by, and before I knew it my kiddos went from tiny toddlers to full-blown kids with full-blown personalities (and sometimes full-blown attitudes, too, let’s be real). And whether I want to admit it or not, I know the years will keep zooming by quicker and quicker. So it’s all so bittersweet, this season of life — parenthood. Will my daughter always want to hold my hand while we walk to the bus stop? Of course not, but I’ll hold on a little tighter while she does. And will my son always reach down to rub my arm while I’m carrying him up the stairs? No, but it feels pretty good right now.

To pay tribute to this special season of life, we’ve dedicated space in this issue to acknowledge the moms and dads in our community. Because even as wonderful as being a parent is, it’s still pretty darn hard, too! And we all deserve a little recognition for the lunches we pack, the practices we drive to, and the tears we wipe. And while we wish we could give a shoutout to all the wonderful moms in our community, we’re excited to introduce you to one special mom, our 2023 Best Mom in Suwanee winner, Evette Walter . While we had many beautiful submissions about the mothers in our community, the essay that Evette’s daughter wrote truly stood out. We connected with the way Elysa described her mom’s selflessness,

her contributions to the community, and the love she has for her family. Turn to p. 18 to meet Evette and read Elysa’s essay.

Back in April, we asked readers and Suwanee Magazine staffers to submit photos of their mom, dad, or children to celebrate both Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. Head over to p. 23 to see all the sweet photos of these beautiful families. Then turn to p. 50 to read about special ways to honor your dad this Father’s Day, written by our very own party planner, crafter, and recipe tester (and not to mention, amazing mama), Natalie Garrett.

And while a large part of this issue focuses on moms and dads, we can’t forget about all the upcoming summer adventures that will take place this year. In addition to our annual Summer Adventure Guide , p. 24, we’ve also compiled a list of some of the best water parks in Georgia. From local favorite The Water Park at Margaritaville Lanier Islands to Jekyll Island’s Summer Waves, we’ve highlighted six awesome parks that are perfect for a summer escape with the family. We also got a sneak peek at Lanier Islands’ newest attraction, Game Changer . The 23,000-square-foot entertainment destination features a nine-hole mini golf course, more than 60 popular arcade games, an escape room, axe-throwing lanes, and virtual sports suites. Turn to p. 38 to learn more!

Whatever adventure you get into this summer, be sure to slow down and soak it all in, because before you know it, another season will have passed — and you don’t want to miss it.

WHATABURGER’S NEWEST Georgia location opened at The Exchange at Gwinnett this past March, and

we’re excited to have a new fast-food option in town. The Texasbased burger chain has reached “iconic” status with its delicious burgers and shakes, and is a welcome addition to the mixed-used development that is quickly becoming a foodie destination in its own right. It’s worth a trip to find out if the saying “everything’s bigger in Texas” applies to its burgers, too. 2925 Buford Drive.

Absolutely. New things and new improvements bring the possibility of new investment opportunities.

From taming fire, inventing the wheel, farming, ships, corporations, machinery, electricity, mobile phones, computers, or landing on the moon, mankind has always been on a successful, but challenging quest to innovate, discover, invent, and to create the future. There is no reason to believe that will stop. Consider this:1

• Communications – 70% of all web traffic happens on a mobile device worldwide. More people now own a cell phone than a toothbrush.

• Entertainment – YouTube now reaches more 18–49 year olds than all linear TV networks combined.

• Transportation – The cost of lithium-ion has dropped by an average compound average growth rate of 13% over the past decade. Electric vehicles have the potential to reach cost parity with internal combustion engines in 2024.

• Finance – Globally, mobile wallet reached 25.7% penetration of all point-of-sale transactions in 2020, exceeding in-store cash payments of 20% for the first time.

• E-commerce – In a McKinsey survey, 20% of consumers surveyed tried a new digital shopping method during the pandemic, and 80% intend to continue to do so after the crisis subsides.

• Artificial Intelligence – AI can correctly identify tiny specks of cancer on CT scans about 95% of the time. That is a 45% increase in accuracy than radiologists typically achieve.

• Information Technology – In 2020, for the first time in history, we saw digital transformation spending accelerate despite GDP declining globally.

New things and new improvements bring the possibility of new investment opportunities. Some of these new investments will be successful and profitable BUT some will not. A conversation with your trusted advisor about this piece of your portfolio would be time well spent. ■

RevivAl of the Arts

SUWANEE ACADEMY OF THE ARTS HAS ITS SIGHTS SET ON A NEW HOME, BUT THEY NEED YOUR HELP.

INCE 2003 , Suwanee Academy of the Arts (SAA) has served as a refuge for local budding artists. Part home away from home and part cultural lifeline, the comprehensive performing arts company offers classes in the arts to local youth. Together with its nonprofit arm, Suwanee Performing Arts (SPA), the organization has woven itself into the cultural fabric of our community and fulfilled its mission to “ignite a passion for the arts that nurtures and

inspires the creative leaders of tomorrow through the magic of live performance.”

Now, after two decades, the organization has its sights set on a bigger, even brighter future. Later this year, the cherished academy plans to move from its home on Main Street in downtown Suwanee to a larger building down the road. The new building will give the company additional space, more amenities, and greater freedom. But before they can move into the new building, the team has a lot of work to do — and they need your help.

Part 1: The Story of Today’s Child

⊲ Studies have shown that exposure to the arts from a young age can positively impact the development of children. It has been reported that the arts help to improve cognitive development, fine motor skills, math skills, language skills and, most notably, interpersonal skills.

Creative arts allow kids to explore their feelings, how they view the world, and how they view themselves. This access to artistic expression also benefits their emotional development because they are better able to understand themselves, which can lead to forming connections with other kids with similar interests. When you factor in current statistics surrounding today’s youth, including rising rates of depression and anxiety, along with an increase in suicide attempts among young children stemming from feelings of divisiveness and isolation, it’s safe to say that access to the arts is more critical than ever.

In short, the arts make life richer for our children. Organizations like Suwanee Academy of the Arts offer our children access to classes that not only fit their interests, but that also help develop their social skills, instill respect, and foster independence from a young age.

Part 2: The Story of Suwanee Academy of the Arts

⊲ The history of Suwanee Academy of the Arts begins with the 20-year friendship of its founders, Patty Etherton and Berneta Davis. After years of dreaming and planning, the studio opened in 2003, and has blossomed into one of our community’s most cherished institutions. Combining Patty and Bernie’s artistic passions, the school offers classes in dance, drama and music, including Kindermusik, solo lessons and group lessons. The duo

report that 500 students come through the studio doors yearly. And with 20 years in business, that adds up to thousands of young minds and hearts that have been shaped by the arts.

In 2007, Suwanee Performing Arts was founded to help provide high-quality performance opportunities to, and by, the community, focusing on youth who may not have the opportunity to otherwise express themselves through the performing arts. In the years that followed since its inception, several artistic divisions sprouted, including Suwanee Ballet, The Actor’s Company, and the Community Art Players of Suwanee.

Suwanee Performing Arts’ most ambitious event of the year is the beloved Broadway in the Park musicals performed in Suwanee’s Town Center Park each summer. By turning the outdoor amphitheater into a Broadway-style stage with professional lighting, sound, costumes, and sets, our community’s talented high school, middle school, and home-schooled students experience local stardom as they perform for the masses.

Part 3: The Story of a Building

When Suwanee Academy of the Arts’ team came across the large commercial building built by Winmark Homes last year, it almost felt like divine intervention. Located at 935 Brogdon Road in Suwanee, the building had sat vacant for years — and it showed.

Upon closer inspection, the team found that the building had been ransacked by rebellious teens who damaged the interior, busted windows, and graffitied its walls with lewd images and phrases, leaving it in desperate need of an intervention. The team knew that they could take the derelict space, which had become a hotbed of rebellion, and turn it into a place that would nurture the creative minds of the local youth. They could take it from neglected to inspired, from forsaken to hopeful. All they needed was time, money, and a lot of support from the community. “The new building is a beautiful ‘win’ for families, artists, and volunteers who see the power and benefit the arts play in our lives. It is truly an answer to our prayers,” says Davis. “Many small details will make a huge impact on not only the folks coming, but the teachers, staff,

and volunteers as well: ample parking, a teachers' lounge, large spaces for creation, meeting rooms, a restful place for parents and so much more. The resurrection of the building is a win for the entire community. I love that this space once left abandoned and violated will be transformed and become a beacon for those who love the arts.”

The 15,744-squarefoot building is large enough to house six studio spaces, five private lesson rooms, a workshop, costume/ props/set storage, and office spaces for both SAA and SPA. In addition, it will also accommodate a new lobby area, bathrooms, and a small library space. Two of the studios will open out to form a “black box” theater for in-house productions. There will also be an additional 2,000 square feet of office space to offer for lease to other local companies.

“For me and Suwanee Performing Arts, the new location will mean that we get to impact more lives

through our mission,” says Susanna Wilson, SPA’s Development Director. “It also means dedicated space for Suwanee Performing Arts to administer those programs and to meet with board members, clients, and sponsors. This could be a game-changer for us."

The revitalization of this building will impact more than just young artists, it will make our community safer by transforming a once abandoned building into a home for the arts that serves local families. In addition, building renovations such as these help to increase property values and contribute to the local economy during construction and operations, so it will also benefit the community as a whole. After 13 years, a building with so much potential that fell victim to neglect now has a team who wants to rewrite its story. With the community’s help, SAA can write a new story that is filled with the exuberance of the arts.

As with many projects such as this, however, the costs have skyrocketed. Suwanee Academy of the Arts is looking to partner with local businesses, organizations, and individuals to help continue their mission to nurture and inspire the creative leaders of tomorrow through the joys of music, dance and theater. Will you help make their dreams come true?

YOU MAY not have heard the name Veugeler Design Group, but you definitely know our work. As a local digital design and marketing agency, we’ve spent the better part of the last 20 years helping to establish brands and tell their story. During that time, our talented team has left its mark on many local businesses such as StillFire Brewing, Beto’s Tacos, Suwanee Academy of the Arts, Bare Bones Steakhouse and Tannery Row Ale House. We’ve created logos for City of Sugar Hill and Winder, and helped with event marketing and branding for the City of Suwanee We’ve also worked behind the scenes with nationally recognized events like Suwanee Wine Fest and the Suwanee American Craft Beer

With each of the organizations we’ve served, our team has helped to tell the story of our community through compelling design, thoughtful writing, and beautiful websites. Now, after nearly two decades of helping businesses build their brands, we're heeding our own advice and embarking on a new chapter. Our team has spent the last several months diving headfirst into the foundation of our brand, reviewing our work as a whole and evaluating where we’ve experienced the most success and made the most impact. As a group of talented individuals who thrive in all areas that the word “creative” encompasses — graphic design, content marketing, visual storytelling, websites, social media — the new direction feels like a more accurate representation of the evolution of our brand. The new Veugeler Creative name and logo made its official debut in April with a new website and digital rollout, and in person at the 2023 Atlanta Apartment Association Trade Show.

The new logo is clean and modern, with lime green evoking feelings of liveliness and creativity. Plus, it integrates well with our other brands (Suwanee Beer Fest, Suwanee Wine Fest, and Suwanee Magazine).

While Veugeler Creative excels in working with industries such as multi-family homes, municipalities, restaurants, and nonprofit organizations, we are excited to continue to help all businesses, no matter their niche, create a cohesive brand identity, tell their story, and reach their target audience.

HE ANNUAL Best Mother in Suwanee Contest is all about highlighting the superhero moms in our community. The moms who spend countless hours driving their kids to events and activities, packing their favorite lunch each day, helping them with their homework, and creating outfits to fit each day’s theme for spirit week. Most of all, the mothers who love their kiddos to the end of the earth and back. At times, being a mom can be hard, so we want to make sure to give our moms the recognition they deserve.

This year, we received a number of touching stories about the wonderful women in our community. The stories were submitted by sons and daughters, husbands and friends, all praising the dedication, selflessness, and love these mothers have shown.

To say it was difficult to choose a winner is an understatement.

Evette Walter

This year, our Best Mother in Suwanee Contest winner is Evette Walker. We loved the essay her daughter Elysa wrote and we are honored to feature it in this issue. As the winner, Evette received a makeover from Salon Greco, a stunning flower arrangement by Suwanee Towne Florist, as well as generous gifts from Vitality Med Spa and Seaside Oyster Bar.

2023 WINNER: PHOTOS BY JULIE PERDUE

Dear Suwanee Magazine,

My mom, Evette Walter, is the most amazing woman I know, and I believe that she deserves a day of pampering that she never allows herself. My mother was raised by my Abuelito and Abuelita, being part Panamanian and Chinese from my Abuelita's side, and German and Irish from my Abuelito's side.

Ever since my mom was young, she was always a hard worker, needing to be on her feet, doing something to help people. She began a career as a lifeguard during her early teens. Once she married my dad she decided to start volunteering at different schools for children even before my sister and I were born.

Throughout middle and high school, my mom has always been there to support my sister and I, driving us to matches practically every day no matter the distance. In addition she would help volunteer for our various sports, taking time to cook for our teams and for our family every night. Since my sister entered high school, my mom has continued her altruistic attempts through her volunteer work, becoming a coach for not only the volleyball team at North Gwinnett High School, but for the Air Rifle team as well. She is also a crossing guard for the school, waking up at early hours of the morning to make sure all the students arrive safely to school. Directly after crossing, my mother continues her

day of work by teaching kickboxing classes and Pilates classes throughout the day. She always puts an emphasis on the importance of having a healthy mind and to be kind to yourself as you do to others.

Her positivity and love branches out into her other hobbies, as she helps to take care of my Abuelito and support my sister and I with anything and everything we do. She works for a catering company and works for sports games to continue this trend. She constantly finds ways to help support our family in any and every way she can, but her providing doesn't stop her from still being there for the family.

I am now a freshman in college, but I come home almost every weekend when I'm not at a sports match. Even though I come on short notice, upon arriving I am always greeted with a home-cooked meal, freshly cleaned sheets, and the most upbeat attitude matching her contagious smile. I have never left for college on an empty stomach and I am constantly amazed at the selflessness and positivity that my mother brings to her work, her volunteering, and especially to our family.

My mom emphasizes the importance of love and self-care to everyone except herself, putting not only our family, but all the people around her before herself. It is that compassion and generosity that makes me believe she deserves the label of Best Mother in Suwanee, for she is the Best Mother to me.

19
Thanks to our friends at Vitality Med Spa and Plastic Surgery Center and Salon Greco, as well as the generosity of local Suwanee businesses, we were able to spoil our Best Mother in Suwanee winner Evette Walter with a day of pampering that was well-deserved.
“My mom emphasizes the importance of love and self-care to everyone except herself, putting not only our family, but all the people around her before herself.”

Brittany Grant

Dear Suwanee Magazine, Brittany Grant puts up with a lot, and she does it in style. If the best mom in Suwanee is one who has changed diapers every day for nine years, driven four fighting brothers to school and sports mostly against their will, and volunteered in almost every capacity to support her community, then you better believe she’s top 10 material. Factor in disastrous pediatric dentistry trips, resolving daily drag-out fights over inconceivably insignificant minutiae, and cooking then subsequently throwing away perfectly good kids’ dinners, and she’s top five. Add a cross country minivan trip complete with customized boy activity and snack packs for 10 days and she’s top three. But then

if you really dig deep and consider she has almost single-handedly built and sustained the magic of Christmas, birthdays, and every other holiday to make four boys' lives magical, she’s an undisputed number one.

There’s so much in the life and work of motherhood that can be written off as mundane or can be glossed over or ignored, as kids won’t know what they’re missing. When it comes to the game of motherhood, Brittany Grant plays every down. On the brink of madness that accompanies such parental effort, she always maintains her dry wit about her. For this and so much more, she deserves to be recognized as the best mom in Suwanee.

MAKE WAVES THIS SUMMER

Splash into summer at one of these six Georgia water parks

IT’S SUMMERTIME in Georgia which means one thing: It’s hot! Once the temperatures start rising, many of us look for reprieve beside some body of water, whether it’s a neighborhood pool, nearby lake, or the closest beach. If you’re looking to really splash into summer adventure this year, nothing quite beats a family trip to the water park! From the thrills of the steep slides to the laid-back flow of the lazy river, water parks are great fun for the whole family. Lucky for us, there are a number of water parks throughout Georgia, with some located right here in our backyard of Gwinnett!

⊲ Top Adventure Pick: Tsunami Surge

The first hybrid zero-gravity single slide that combines two extreme slide thrills: First, four riders will barrel down an enclosed five-story drop that includes a 125-foot long whirlpool bowl, spinning you round and round at 360 degrees. Then ride down an enclosed tube into a 40-foot-wide bowl, where you’ll feel a moment of zero-gravity bliss before hitting an embankment and landing in the splash pool below.

⊲ Nestled in Six Flags Over Georgia, Hurricane Harbor is the second water park from Six Flags in Atlanta. Entry to the water park comes with general admission, so it’s two parks for the price of one. Take on the thrilling roller coasters at the theme park in the morning, before cooling off in the midday sun at Hurricane Harbor. Rides include Bonzai Pipelines, a colorful set of slides that give you three options for the perfect water ride — two of the slides have sharp turns that test your courage, while the third is a thrilling fourstory drop. The Calypso Bay Wave Pool simulates the feeling of the ocean surf, where you can splash around the enormous wave pool or brave the four-foot wave shells all day long. The kids will love Paradise Island, a 2,000-square-foot interactive water playground that includes six unique water slides, three giant water-dumping towers, and hundreds of interactive water elements.

As one of the largest water parks in the Southeast, White Water boasts more than 20 water rides and attractions, plus a 700,000-gallon wave pool, lazy river, and more. The park’s signature attractions include the Run-A-Way River, a 735-footlong raging river where you ride in a giant raft with up

Kids will love Caribbean Cove, a brand-new children’s AquaPlay structure opening this summer. Modern Mom: Connected in a World of Busy

A mom’s world is often very busy with keeping up with the family schedule, daily routine of home and work, being the problem solver, and fun maker. Even though moms tend to spend so much time focused on the people around them I often hear a deep desire from moms to feel more connected. Why is this? How can a mom spend so much time caring for others and yet still feel emotionally disconnected from the people who matter most to her? If we were to dive a little deeper into this, often the busy schedule and exhaustion is driven by a mom’s desire to connect more with her kids, partner, and friends. As a therapist, I help moms and women discover new ways to seek this connection and stop the pattern of exhaustion and disappointment so many women feel.

Three

tips to cultivate connection in a world of busy.

Find connection moments.

⊲ We know from years of relationship and attachment research that not every moment is the same when it comes to relationships and building connections. The moments your kids, partner, and friends emotionally reach out are some of the most important moments to listen up, put away distractions, and show up. This can happen in slight ways that hold a lot of weight in building connections such as “play with me,” “help me solve this problem,” “try something new with me,” “help me feel better,” and many more. When you stop to answer, engage, and help in these times it can make a big difference in developing and keeping connections.

Seek out repairs.

⊲ All relationships need repairs from time to time when important moments are missed, someone says the wrong thing, or a poor decision is made that impacts how connected the relationship feels. Emotional connection can quickly be restored when you know how to get things back on track. To start a relationship repair, ask, “What did I miss?” and “What do you need from me?” Once you know what is needed to restore the connection, show this through words and actions consistently over time to repair the relationship. If you have tried this and the relationship is still feeling disconnected, seek out resources and help. Try reading a book or reaching out to a family therapist.

42 Suwanee Magazine suwaneemagazine.com MAY / JUNE 23
FAMILY MATTERS

Share more.

⊲ We tend to live in a supermom culture where moms often feel they need to do it all and take care of everyone. Being a supermom can sometimes fuel feelings of disconnection. Instead, try sharing more. For example, share more of who you are by telling more childhood stories or tell more of what you are passionate about. Share the tasks that need to be completed with your partner, your friends, or ask your kids to help out more. It is easier to feel connected when you share more with the people who matter the most around you

and give them the opportunity to show up for you as well.

When moms feel they need to be everything to everyone they can tend to feel more disconnected as their busy schedule gets in the way of opportunities for connection. Not all moments are the same, try putting away distractions during important moments so you can listen to others and share more of who you are. As much as you try to show up well in your relationships, all good relationships will need repairs from time to time, so step into them and get things back on track. ■

OP CRAWFISH and Wings is nestled in a popular shopping center at one of Suwanee’s busiest intersections, making it a prime destination for workweek lunches on the go and sit-down family dinners on the weekends. For the past two years, the family-run establishment has served a hearty menu of New Orleans-style Cajun seafood and has recently expanded to include hot wings and a special selection of Korean lunch boxes.

In addition to the seafood dishes we’ve come to know and love, such as crawfish, snow crab legs, fish and chips, and more, diners can now choose from Korean favorites like beef or spicy pork bulgogi, soy garlic or teriyaki chicken, and Korean spicy chicken. Each box comes with a side of fried rice, a salad, fries, and a Korean dumpling.

For its decor, the restaurant embraces its seafood-centric menu with maritime flourishes throughout the restaurant, such as anchors, oars, and other nautical elements. Diners can order at the counter or use one of the self-serve kiosks before taking a seat in one of the large, comfortable booths lining the wall. The upbeat, pop playlist is a welcome treat, and sets the mood for an enjoyable meal.

Choose between shrimp, fish, or oysters, or make it a combo plate of your choice.

Other menu items include Cajun crawfish, snow crab legs, and mussels, along with Southern

favorites like gumbo, pasta, and hot wings, which come in flavors such as lemon pepper, honey BBQ, Buffalo, and butter lemon pepper.

THIS MAY , Suwanee’s Planet Smoothie will celebrate 13 years in business — that’s 13 years of not only mixing up delicious smoothies and acai bowls, but also 13 years of being a valuable part of our community. Former teachers Karen Hendrix and Kristin Scott opened Planet Smoothie in Town Center in May of 2010, and over the years have made it a priority to pay it forward to schools and teachers throughout Suwanee.

GIFTS THAT KEEP ON GIVING

DAD’S DAY DONE RIGHT

TIPS TO MAKE SURE YOUR GUY FEELS SPECIAL THIS YEAR

don’t know how it’s possible, but my little one just turned a whole 1 year old in April! A year that yielded more joy and purpose than I could ever put into words. Reflecting on the year behind us, I’ve realized part of that joy stems from having a front row seat to my husband fully embracing his newest role: Dad. And with Father’s Day coming up, I wanted to plan something extra significant to celebrate all the moments the first year of fatherhood brought him and how he gracefully and courageously conquered each one. So if you’re joining me in honoring a certain special guy this year, check out a few of my ideas to ensure Dad’s Day is as truly meaningful as he is!

⊲ Another coffee mug? More silly socks? Gift cards galore? We’ve all been there… you have no idea what to buy for that person who doesn't really need anything and already seems to have everything (ahem, Dad). But, you know what he does need? A subscription. And no, I’m not referring to one of the multiple streaming services you already have. I’m referring to something a little more curated to the individually awesome and uniquely amazing father in your life. Something he will not only enjoy and appreciate, but something that will extend beyond June 18th and provide a continued delight for months to come. Here are a few of my favorite subscription offers for inspo:

MasterClass: MasterClass offers an

annual subscription that gives unlimited access to their wealth of classes. With topics ranging from food and business to sports and music, this is the perfect opportunity to encourage Dad to delve into a new hobby by learning from some of the world’s leaders in that industry.

Meat Delivery:

Dads and grilling just go together, amirite? Consider a subscription like ButcherBox that will source high-quality cuts of meat and seafood, package up your personalized selection, and ship it directly to your front door.

Grooming Kits:

For the bearded men in your life, look no further than a subscription like Harry’s or The Beard Club that will send you a box full of grooming supplies and hair products. Dad will secretly grow excited to try a variety of goodies, while also being relieved

it’s one less thing he has to remember to add to the shopping list.

GATHER AROUND THE GRILL

⊲ It’s only inevitable that many families (including my own) will end up spending this warm, summer day gathered around the grill. Which, if he’s anything like my husband or father-inlaw, that’s exactly where he’ll want to be anyways! We’re huge fans of the classicsburgers and hot dogs, steaks, and pulled pork if you’re the low and slow smoking type. But if you’re searching for something a little different this year, I recommend chicken kabobs. Flavorful bites of chicken combined with an assortment of vibrant veggies creates a beautiful and tasty spread.

Ingredients

- 1 pound of raw, boneless

chicken breasts

- ¼ cup soy sauce

- ¼ cup maple syrup

- 1 tablespoon

Sriracha sauce

- Fresh produce of your choice:

onions, bell

peppers, mushrooms, pineapples, etc.

- Skewers

Directions

1. Cut chicken into 1-inch square cubes.

2. In a ziplock bag, mix together the soy sauce, maple syrup and Sriracha. Add chicken to the bag

and massage the marinade into the chicken. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours.

3. Prepare your produce by cutting each item into 1-inch square pieces.

4. Assemble the kabobs and grill until the chicken is cooked through.

5. Enjoy with Dad!

PLAN AN OUTING AS RAD AS DAD

⊲ You’ve got the ultimate gift secured and the menu is set. What’s next? Quality time with Dad! Center the day around him by choosing an activity specific to his interests. Try to think of something that he might not get to indulge in often, or even a new venture he wants to explore. Then, take it a step further by surprising him! SOUTH MAIN BREWING

COMMUNITY FUELED

CONEE COUNTY’S first craft brewery, South Main Brewing, was created out of what owners Dutch Guest, Brock Toole, and Head Brewer Nic Farley felt was a collective need for a local place of gathering. Since opening its doors in October of 2022, the brewery has taken the city of Watkinsville — and the Georgia craft beer scene — by storm. We recently had the chance to sit down with the owners to learn more about South Main’s delicious craft beer and how they’re living up to their motto: “community fueled.”

How did you get involved in the craft beer industry?

We began in 2019 in a local Rotary club as a group of good friends brewing together. The plan for a brewery grew while trying to navigate the professional and personal changes associated with the pandemic. We noticed a need in the community for a place to get together and enjoy a truly local experience. We brought Nic Farley, our head brewer, in to take

Oconee County’s South Main Brewing focuses on community and great craft beer from its home in Watkinsville.

what we were brewing to the next level, and South Main Brewing was established.

Why Watkinsville? Watkinsville is home for all of us. We love our community and we wanted to share our love of craft beer with our friends and family. We wanted to be Watkinsville and Oconee County's first brewery.

What’s the story behind the name South Main? When we first began brewing and discussing the concept of opening a taproom, we were brewing at a historic home in the center of downtown Watkinsville on South Main Street. We wanted our branding to pay homage to our roots, so our name is centered on that beginning location. Our pump logo is based off the gas pump at the front of the property which has always been a local landmark. Many of our beer names are based on local areas of Watkinsville and Oconee County as well. We truly embrace our “community fueled” slogan.

What has community support been like since opening your doors?

Community support since opening has been overwhelming, and we could not ask for better patrons. The City of Watkinsville and Wire Park have been

53

working with us from the beginning to help ensure our success. We are constantly in awe of the positivity and love we feel from our patrons and the community as a whole.

What sets you apart from other Georgia breweries? We focus on customer service in our taproom as well as constantly working on improving our products. Even with our best sellers, we are always looking at the potential to refine the product to improve the quality and taste of each of them. We are also constantly looking at new types of beer to introduce. There is a guarantee that when you walk in our taproom, that our best sellers will be available but also that there will probably be something you haven't tried that will surprise you.

Tell us a little bit about your brewing team. Nic Farley, our head brewer and co-owner, has been brewing for 16 years. He began home brewing while working with a craft beer magazine, and ultimately fell in love with the brewing process — and he’s been refining his craft ever since. When we approached him with the idea of South Main, he moved to join the team from Atlanta.

What is your best seller in the taproom?

Currently, Hazed on Main is our best seller. This is our hazy New England IPA. Hopped like a West Coast but soft like a hazy, it is brewed with Citra, Mosaic, Sabre and Cashmere Lupomax hops. We have been refining it since our days back on South Main Street.

If you could recommend a seasonal beer for readers to try, what would it be? Idle Hours is our West Coast-style pilsner. A mixture of New Zealand’s Motueka and Rabaul hops collide with American Chinook to create a crushable pilsner that is ripe with tropical fruit flavor and aroma.

Where can you find your beer outside of the taproom? We have just begun keg distributions to local establishments around Watkinsville and Athens. We are currently adding capacity to branch out further!

Do you currently host any events in your taproom? We have a consistent rotation of

54 Suwanee Magazine suwaneemagazine.com MAY / JUNE 23

events throughout the week and are open Tuesday-Sunday. We sponsor a cornhole league through Cornhole ATL that meets at Wire Park on Tuesdays. Weekly, we host trivia on Wednesday and live music on Friday. Thursdays are typically filled with Tours and Tastings, which includes a tour of the brewhouse with our Head Brew Master Nic, and a flight of samples that Nic creates. We also schedule a Giving Thursday throughout each month. Giving Thursday provides us a chance to give back to our community by sponsoring rotating nonprofit organizations for a percentage night.

We have a brew deck area upstairs that overlooks the taproom and brewhouse, and our brew deck can hold up to 35 people and is available to rent. We also host bigger events and festivals throughout the year and partner with Wire Park and neighboring businesses.

Following South Main Brewing on Facebook and Instagram is the best way to stay informed of all our activities!

Are there any upcoming news or events that the community should know about?

We currently have an open container policy in the park. Patrons can purchase our beer and take it to enjoy a nice walk or hang out outside! We are also expanding our taproom into the new Food Court (The Grid) that will feature an additional service bar for to-go beer. ■

The Myth of the “Summer ” Beer

THE DAYS are getting longer, and it seems like it is getting a little warmer every day so it is time to look for a "summer" beer, right? Well, this is the 21st century. American craft brewers have been at it for over 50 years to bring you the widest world of beers ever created. You can drink whatever you want, whenever you want, wherever you want. That said, let’s explore the beer styles that traditionally popped up during the summer more out of necessity than to appeal to consumers.

WHY LIGHTER IN SUMMER

⊲ Refrigeration and later temperature control were unknown for most of the 1800s. Going to the pub for “a tall cold one” didn’t exist until about the time your great grandpa was knocking them back. Fruit was not commonly added to beer back then, however, being an agricultural

product like grain, less of both were available for brewers as the summer progressed and harvest approached. Less grain used brewing a batch of beer meant the beer was lighter and lower alcohol. Specialty malts and grains (the roasted and toasted ones that add darker colors to beer) often became scarce for the same reason. Without true temperature control in the brewery, as the outside temperatures became warmer, the yeast fermenting the beer added more fruity esters than they would in the winter.

Wheat became an ingredient associated with the summer. Beers made with wheat became summer favorites in Bavaria specifically because the King made a decree that brewers were forbidden from brewing all-barley beers as required by the Reinheitsgebot purity law. This Bavarian Weissbier had fruity esters and hints of spice from the ale yeast used. In Belgium, the locals added orange peel and spices to their wheat beer. Wild fermentation beers were also brewed during the spring for summer enjoyment when wild yeast was floating in the air. With modern worldwide supply chains, fruit is available year-round, and in such variety that the only limiting factor is the imagination and creativity of the brewer.

A strong drink warms your body by dilating your blood vessels. A whiskey by the fire at the end of a cold evening evokes that iconic

winter moment. When the weather warms, drinkers gravitate toward colder and lighter in both color and alcohol level beers. Thirst quenching and drinkability are key components. Drier finishes and smoother bitterness become more prevalent and popular in the summer. The simple, crushable “lawnmower” beers are a staple at picnics, ballgames, and on the beach. Most of those are clean, low alcohol lagers, that check off the "satisfy the thirst" box and lend themselves to being served ice-cold. Fruit may be added to ales or lagers whether they contain wheat or not. The key is balancing the tartness of the fruit without becoming too sweet or heavy on the palate.

ALTERNATIVE STYLES TO TRY

⊲ There are a few types of beers that buck the summer trend. Fruity IPAs - whether it is from hops, fruit, or both - can be designed to be ideal summer beers if the finish is dry and the alcohol moderated. The original dry Irish stouts are

very low in alcohol, dry from roast in the finish, and not nearly as full on the palate as their dark color suggests. Simple sour styles such as Gose, Berliner Weise , and modern American craft sours feature clean lactic tartness that is very thirst quenching paired with an appropriate fruit, the possibilities are endless.

In summary, unlike Fred Flintstone, modern craft brewers don’t have to hold back on creativity in the summer due to ingredient shortages or dinosaur-powered equipment made of stone. The contemporary beer drinker can choose to drink whatever they are in the mood for, and your local brewery is more than willing to offer endless choices to quench your summer thirst. ■

"We were playing lacrosse at a tournament in Panama City Beach," the girls say. "At the tournament, there was only one vendor. We saw this was significantly different when we went to tournaments where boys were playing. The options available to the boys far

Local Father in Need of Kidney Donation

 VISHNU DUREDDY, a loving husband of 23 years and father to two wonderful daughters, is in desperate need of a kidney. A year ago, Vishnu’s life changed in an instant when he had to go on emergency dialysis after being diagnosed with FSGS, a rare hereditary kidney disease. He is now in endstage renal failure.

Now, the simple pleasures of Vishnu’s life have taken a back seat to finding a kidney to survive. His love for playing cricket has ceased, and activities with his family now revolve around his dialysis schedule. Instead of taking vacations this past year, Vishnu’s family filled their calendar with registering for a transplant in different states.

Also during this time, Vishnu lost his father to the same kidney condition after being on dialysis for three years. Despite a strict diet and dialysis, Vishnu’s condition is deteriorating, putting him at imminent risk for cardiac complications. Vishnu’s blood type is O, which puts the wait time for a transplant at up to eight years.

“We explored and exhausted living donor options within the family, due to health issues, no one is eligible to donate,” says his wife, Pushpa. “The words ‘the sooner the better’ from our healthcare providers are what compels me to implore for a living donor.”

Gwinnett County Public Library Announces Teen Entrepreneurship Program Winners

 THE GWINNETT County Public Library recently announced the winners of its recent Teen Entrepreneurship Program: Paola Luquin (first place), Jazlynn Dunn (second place), and Sophie Alverado (third place).

With more than 60 percent of teens considering entrepreneurship, the Gwinnett County Public Library Learning Labs launched a Teen Entrepreneurship pilot program in 2023 to provide next-generation leaders with resources to develop small businesses. Out of the 31 area teens who applied for the program, the Learning Labs selected 10 participants.

The program consists of a four-day intensive workshop which began on February 15, teaching teens

entrepreneurial skills to create economic opportunities. Participants come up with a business concept, develop a small business plan, and then execute a pitch presentation to a panel of judges.

Library cardholders 13 years of age and older have access to eight maker spaces across the county to explore entrepreneurial interests. The library's technology includes laser printers, digital cameras, podcasting mixers, sewing machines, software and more — all of which is industry-leading and free to use.

Young entrepreneurs can develop their ideas using the maker spaces, then promote their businesses on free sites like Etsy, Fiverr, Instagram, WordPress, and Youtube. The Learning Labs hopes to hold another Teen Entrepreneurship Program soon.

CITY OF SUWANEE ANNOUNCES NEW COMMUNITY-BUILD PLAYGROUND FOR FALL 2023

OVER A five-day period in 2004, more than 1,000 community members helped build a community playground that came to be known as PlayTown Suwanee. Now, the City of Suwanee says that it’s time to do it again!

Building upon the success of PlayTown Suwanee nearly 20 years ago, the city recently announced plans for a new community-build playground in the fall of 2023. The city has approved Leathers & Associates — the designer and project management team behind the original community build — to return to Suwanee to help modernize PlayTown Suwanee for a new generation.

“After 20 years of fun, PlayTown has reached the end of its planned service life,” said Suwanee City Manager Marty Allen. “We explored rehabbing it, but ultimately it made even more sense to rebuild it with modern, durable materials and incorporate some new features.”

The collective build experience offers a handson opportunity for citizens to give something tangible back to their community, resulting in a beautifully constructed, unique expression of shared pride.

The custom-designed playground will be at the same location, similarly sized, and include elements reminiscent and the character of the original. It will be designed to meet modern standards for inclusivity and constructed from earth-friendly, recycled materials that are long lasting and virtually maintenance-free.

The Suwanee and Leathers & Associates project team will be hosting design brainstorm sessions with the ultimate playground experts: kids! The playground design will be reflective of Suwanee and include special features unique to our area.

“Playground trends have come a long way in 20 years,” said PlayTown project manager Kim Towne. “With the construction of Town Center on Main, this seemed like the perfect time to give our beloved PlayTown a much-needed facelift, while also providing a new generation of parents the opportunity to be involved in a truly impactful project.”

Opportunities for community input on design ideas, volunteer committee roles, and construction workdays will be announced soon.
