Screens are often applied by individual investors to one or more of the following sectors: tobacco, liquor, weapons, pornography, nuclear technologies, resource extraction (mining and drilling), and family planning products. Dozens of schools have screened out tobacco from their portfolios, and a handful of other schools – mostly religiously affiliated – have stricter screens.” The Responsible Endowment Coalition is concerned with both human rights issues and environmental issues. The screens applied are determined by the institution and can be catered to address environmental sustainability.

Comment [o1]: Brief History: In September 2011, Concerns regarding this footnote were raised and brought to the attention of PACSP. Steve Golding, VP for Finance and Administration offered a foundation for discussion by providing support to PACSP. After consideration, PACSP determined that this was a matter of implementation and, therefore, must be deferred to EECC. Members of EECC were provided with recommendations made by the President’s Advisory Council on Sustainability Planning regarding proposed changes. In October 2011, EECC determined that definitions of positive and negative screening were unnecessary and that the removal of the entire footnote would be beneficial to the successful implementation of the Sustainability Plan. (It should be noted that, in the original Sustainability Plan document, the footnotes were incorrectly numbered. As such, this footnote was called “Footnote #22” despite its location as Footnote #23.)
