Benchmark 20: Increase the percentage of paper products on campus that include postconsumer recycled content  FY13 Report: 40% meets standards; goal is 75%(of 40% post-consumer recycled

material)  Idea to advertise recycled paper in library printers on site

Benchmark 32: Increase Food Donations to Local Service Organizations  4 year old report: The energy it would take to keep a refrigerated food truck running to

deliver excess dining hall food around campus would have higher GHG emissions than just composting the food  Good Works receives food from OU – where, what, and how much?


 Promote “extra swipes” canned food donations  Idea for a “Christmas” food drive of excess food at end of semester

Benchmark 34: Implement notification systems for local service organizations regarding availability of surplus items  Moving and Surplus Office has website and auctions to circulate materials on campus  Benchmark almost reached, but help could be provided to develop an outreach program

Sustainable OU Leaders: Waste Reduction Sub-Group Meeting Minutes, taken by Katie Lasco April 17, 2013 In attendance: Austin Stahl, John Benson, Megan Graver, Marianne Jacobs, Annie Laurie Cadmus, Matt Kovarik, Alex Slaymaker, Elaine Goetz Discussion Points: - Benchmark 5: Reduce Solid Waste o Discussed ideas for a listserv with waste reduction information – decided to piggyback on Greennetwork - Student Orientation Update o $1,000 funding from Office of Sustainability is no longer needed; decided to use instead for t-shirt marketing campaign


Alex will contact Andrew Lloyd about putting the Bobcats Recycle logo on the recycled bags o Orientation staff is working on developing an app that will provide information instead of using printed materials o Megan Graver and Elaine Goetz may attend segments of student orientation between July 15 – August 5 to observe from a sustainability perspective and provide feedback Benchmark 30: Provide information to diners regarding sustainability-attributes of food options o Began brainstorming ideas  Host “Meatless Mondays” every week  Provide bigger labels for local food in the dining halls o Culinary Services is currently switching to large volume of local meat o Annie Laurie will reach out to Erinn Robb to discuss purchase of local meat o Discussed ideas to educate diners about local food: t-shirt campaign  Pass shirts out in an environmental geography class after learning about local food  Brainstormed various messages for the t-shirts o

Sustainable OU Leaders: Waste Reduction Sub-Group Meeting Minutes, taken by Katie Lasco March 20, 2013 In attendance: Andrew Ladd, Marianne Jacobs, Chase Robinson, Alex Slaymaker, Annie Laurie Cadmus, Katie Lasco Discussion Points: - Introduction and overview of each of the Waste Reduction benchmarks - Andrew Ladd, Recycling and Refuse Manager, will take a leadership role in this group. Annie Laurie Cadmus will typically not be present at these meetings. - Benchmark 5: Reduce Solid Waste


Events on campus were identified as a top offender. Alex Slaymaker is working on developing a Green Events Guide with a rating system to provide to organizations and units. o Idea to change financial incentives so organizations hosting events would be provided free recycling and be charged for trash pick-up o Brainstorm on educational campaign about compost, recycling, and waste reduction. Currently working with University Communications and Marketing to finalize flyers. Ideas to create an educational listserv and to utilize social media and news outlets o Work with Culinary Services to create zero waste options for catering events o Discussion on a print responsibly program using the “Think before you print” tagline - Benchmark 7: Increase Recycling Rates o The group identified areas to further composting on campus  Educate students to deposit personal compostable waste in bins behind dining halls, as university personnel is currently not able to provide pick-up at each residence hall  Analyze state of composting in Baker Center then develop educational materials o Brainstormed ideas for recycling in residence halls  Label all bins provided to residents with recycling logo and educational design, and label trash bins as “Landfill”  Develop a “Bobcats Recycle” campaign with a comprehensive marketing plan to make recycling a social norm for Ohio University students.  Suggest “Trash for cash” fundraiser by residence hall councils be transformed into a recycling service Action Items: - All members: Review draft of the Green Events Guide and provide feedback to Alex Slaymaker by the next meeting - Research and brainstorm ideas for a weekly email blast/waste reduction listserv to be created for Fall 2013 - Annie Laurie Cadmus will discuss compost marketing for the residence halls with Environmental Health and Safety; will discuss marketing campaign at next meeting - Andrew Ladd will meet with representatives from Baker Center to identify current compostable materials used in Baker Center. This conversation will potentially include the Culinary Services Development Committee in the future. - All members: Brainstorm marketing ideas and email to sustainability@ohio.edu by April 4, 2013. These will be compiled together to provide fuel for discussion at the next meeting o
