Year 12 Graduation Mass and Major Awards Ceremony Dear HSC students Soon you will participate in the final assessment process of these years, the Higher School Certificate examination. This week marks a significant time in your school life as you attend the graduation ceremonies to mark the completion of 13 years of schooling. On behalf of all staff in our Parish schools and in the Catholic Schools Office I wish you every success in the exams, knowing that the preparation you have undertaken, with the support and guidance of your teachers, will be of great assistance to you in the weeks ahead. The HSC is the culmination of these 13 years of schooling which, for many of you, have been spent in Catholic schools. As students you have contributed significantly to making our schools faith based communities that promote a love of God and respond to Christ’s call to love one another. I have been most impressed with the willingness of our students to live out this faith through their generous response to those in need in our community and in underprivileged areas of our world. I encourage you to take that witness into the post-school world that awaits you. One of the special aspects of the role of Principal of St Joseph’s Regional College is becoming aware of the tremendous achievements of our graduating students. The number of times that I have been able to acknowledge these achievements speaks volumes about the opportunities St Joseph’s Regional College provides. During this time it has been my privilege to meet with many of you at various events and each time I come away more confident than ever that the youth of today make an outstanding contribution to our society. I hope that, over the next few weeks, you will be able to approach your exams in as relaxed a manner as possible, confident and determined to demonstrate all that you have learnt over the years. It is important to remember that there is life after the HSC and that there are many pathways to the careers you might wish to pursue. The world is still a place of great adventure. You will encounter all kinds of exciting things as you move beyond school. But it remains a world awaiting your energy, your dedication and your generosity of heart. May God bless you in your endeavours.

Parents and Families are invited to attend the Year 12 Graduation Mass on Wednesday, 17th September 2014 commencing 6:30pm at St Agnes’ Church and Year 12 Major Award Ceremony on Thursday, 18th September 2014 commencing at 9:30am in the College Hall

Year 10 and 12 Students Departing from the College As mentioned in last week’s newsletter, I would like to remind parents that it is imperative that accounts for students of Year 10 and 12 be finalised prior to departure. I am very conscious of avoiding any embarrassing moments for families, and ask if you are in a situation where you cannot pay an account, then it is important for you to contact me to make an alternative arrangement. Our College fees form an integral part in our Catholic Education endeavour. Every one of your sons and daughters are precious to us and we are humbled that you have entrusted their education to the College. Thank you for your ongoing support and the evident sacrifices you make in what is the most important investment in your lives as parents. God Bless Jim Dempsey College Principal

NEWS FROM THE LEADER OF CURRICULUM Missed Tasks If a student is aware he or she will be absent for an exam or when a task is due as a result of misadventure such as surgery, funerals, elite sporting commitments or other unavoidable circumstances. Students must see the Leader of Curriculum, Mr Lutton on the day of their return to the College and before commencement of the school day to organise a time to complete the missed task.

NEWS FROM OUR LEADER OF CATECHESIS AND EVANGELISATION 'Operations Christmas Child' or 'Love In a Shoebox' is underway once again this year. This initiative involves PC members rallying together to help fill a box of gifts to give to children around the world who live with less. For some this 'shoebox' could be the first gift they have ever received. Hopefully together we can bring a smile to many young faces this Christmas.

Please ensure you register your interest in attending the Proclaim Parent Gatherings 2014 which will be held over six separate days across the Diocese of Lismore in October (numbers are limited). PARENT INVITATION TO PROCLAIM LISMORE PARENTS 2014 GATHERINGS What will effective partnership between families and schools look like in the years ahead? The Catholic Schools Office in partnership with parish schools invites the cooperation of parents and caregivers in the exciting program of building a stronger parental partnership for the 21st Century. The first steps in building this stronger partnership are to listen to parents and enter into dialogue so that we can build common understanding around where we are at and where we want to be in time with partnership. In this commitment to listen to parents the Catholic Schools Office currently is conducting a survey which all parents are invited to participate in. The next step in this process of listening and entering into dialogue will be the Proclaim Lismore Parent 2014 Gatherings which will be held from 5:45 pm 9:00 pm including dinner in the following regions: Proclaim Lismore Parent Gathering Dates: - Venues to be advised - Times: Dinner 5:45 pm – 6:15 pm, Meeting 6:15 pm - 9:00 pm

CURRICLUM NEWS Attention Year 10 students and parents THE FACTS ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF ‘WRITING RIGHT’ 

Students will do 12-14 units in the Preliminary Course and 10-12 in the HSC. The only subject that does not require writing tasks is Maths.

English is not the only subject that requires essays.

Practical subjects and science based courses still require written responses. They may not be essays, but they will require STRUCTURED written responses, often extended.

Example - PDHPE has a minimum 12 essays. These are assessment tasks only and this DOES NOT include class tasks, drafts, sample answers. To do well in the HSC, a realistic figure of written responses to be completed would be approximately 80-100. This is for one subject only

75% of HSC exams will be writing 3-4 essays, which include 3-4 pages each.

95% of your tasks will require structured written responses.

Whilst most students choose to drop a course in Year 12, this does not mean written responses/tasks will ‘drop’. On the contrary, they will increase as you prepare responses for your teacher to mark and check. THE BOTTOM LINE: LEARNING HOW TO PREPARE AND WRITE ‘RIGHT’ IS THE KEY TO ACHIEVING YOUR BEST IN THE HSC. When: Every MONDAY (From Week 2 Term 4) Where: GL8 When: Lunch time What: Learn how to prepare written responses for ALL subjects. Bring your lunch…lollies provided!

ENGLISH NEWS English Competition On Thursday, 31st July, St Joseph’s Regional College students participated in the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) English 2014. Educational Assessment Australia has been conducting this competition for over 20 years. It has proven to be one of the most reliable assessment programs available for providing feedback on students’ strengths and weaknesses in reading (of both factual and literary texts), vocabulary use and knowledge and understanding of textual devices. 211 of our students participated in this year’s English competition and were awarded 1 High Distinction, 16 Distinction, 58 Credit, 33 Merit and 103 Participation Certificates. A special congratulations to those students who received a Distinction certificate, these students being placed in the top 5% of participants. Hannah Reynolds (Year 9) managed to receive the College’s only High Distinction award this year, placing her in the top 1% of students– an outstanding achievement! Ms Brigitte Rieger Leader of English
