PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE YEAR 7 REFLECTION DAY This week has been a significant one for Year 7 students’ journeys at St Joseph’s Regional College. On Thursday, Year 7 students attended their Reflection day. Students attended activities at the College throughout the day whilst also travelling to the Youth Hub and St Agnes’ Church where they had the opportunity to meet with our College Chaplain, Fr. James Forster. Reflection days help students to develop relationships with God and with each other. Thank you to Fr James, College Chaplain, Mrs Tanya Daley, Year 7 Leader of Pastoral Care, Mrs Nora Swain, Leader of Catechesis and School Evangelisation and Jordan Hughes, YMO who facilitated the day. Thank you also to the other dedicated staff members who were in attendance on the day. I commend to you a report on the day’s events by Tanya Daley our Year 7 Leader of Pastoral Care. On Thursday, 12th March, Year 7 embarked on their Reflection Day journey. House groups rotated through 4 experiences, both at the College and at St Agnes’ Church/Youth Hub. Students reflected on the many things in life we have to be thankful for, played teamwork games, were motivated by the need for individuality, experienced the importance of being part of our community and explored the beautiful St Agnes’ church. Lunchtime was spent bonding with the year group and playing games in town green/town beach area. The students enjoyed testaments from our Youth Ministry Officers; Jordan, Anna, Ellen, Nick and Aaron. They are certainly gifted speakers who inspired the students with their enthusiasm for living life with great faith. Thank you to Father James, our College Chaplain, for dedicating his day to us. He answered A LOT of questions and allowed us to explore the church, where the students really made themselves at home. The day was successful thanks to the contribution and leadership of Ms Nora Swain and the support of the ever-giving staff; Mr Michael Walsh, Mrs Tobi Harris, Ms Kay Curran, Miss Hannah O’Brien, Mr Alan Carson, Mrs Vanessa Gray, Mr Jason Berry, Mr Jason Bryant and Miss Sophie Priddis. Preparation is now underway for our Year 7 parent/student celebration on Tuesday 31st March, 12.00pm at St Agnes’ Church. Parents are encouraged and very welcome to attend this celebration. Thank you to Year 7 for their great enthusiasm and fantastic behaviour on the day. I hope they enjoyed the experience, made some new friends and are able to reflect further on themes from the day. Mrs Tanya Daley Leader of Pastoral Care Year 7

YEAR 8-12 PARENT TEACHER EVENING On behalf of the staff of St Joseph’s Regional College, we thank the many families who attended last Monday’s Parent-Teacher evening. These evenings are valuable to students, parents and teachers. We are looking forward to meeting many more families at the second round of interviews on Monday, 23rd March starting at 4.00pm. Families who were unable to attend last Monday are welcome to attend the coming evening. Bookings can be made through our College website http://www.pmreglism.catholic.edu.au/ PARENT SURVEYS FOR SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT Thank you to the randomly selected families from Years 7-12 who were recently contacted to participate in a School Improvement survey. The surveys are to be completed either online or by a paper questionnaire, between 16th – 27th March, paper surveys can be returned to the College office in the sealed confidential envelope provided. This survey of staff, students and parents is part of our ongoing data collection for school improvement. The implementation of the student, teacher and parent opinion surveys to support school improvement has provided a rich source of data for all diocesan schools. The Lismore Catholic Schools Office is committed to continuing to support schools in their ongoing pursuit of improving learning outcomes for all students. The surveys are co-ordinated by Insight SRC and all individual responses from staff, students and parents will be kept confidential and will not be identifiable to any other person or body outside of Insight SRC. There is no way that individuals can be identified from the results or the information provided by the survey consultants. God Bless Jim Dempsey Principal

NEWS FROM LEADER OF PEDAGOGY Student for a day This week, students would have been forgiven for thinking that their classmates looked a little too old to be still in High School. Students found themselves sitting beside familiar (though older) faces as teachers from our College donned the school uniform and joined classes for the day. Not only did the teachers have to wear the correct uniform, they have to follow all instructions from their teachers, complete all their classwork, and do their homework. While this is a bit of fun for all concerned, there is a more important reason that the College has taken on this initiative: to help our teachers become better at their jobs. On Wednesday, Mr Frank Johnston and Mr Tom Inatey assumed the roles of Year 9 and Year 7 students and took this chance critically reflect upon their own teaching practice in an effort to improve their craft. Even though they had to do all the work expected of others in the class they were also observing their teachers, watching how their lessons operate, getting tips and tricks, finding out about strategies that other teachers use and watching the great things that teachers are doing to help our students learn. They also used this opportunity to help them understand what it is like to be a student at St. Josephs Regional College. Today, Mrs Eichmann is the next to join the student ranks and there will be more teachers turning up as students in our classrooms in the following weeks. Hopefully, all our teachers can take this wonderful opportunity to learn from each other. Bruce Smith Leader of Pedagogy

NEWS FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL- PASTORAL ABSENT FROM SCHOOL ALL ABSENCES AND LATE ARRIVALS MUST PROVIDE A NOTE WITHIN 7DAYS OR THE ABSENCE/LATE WILL NOT BE CHANGED AND WILL APPEAR ON THE STUDENTS REPORT. Late to school: if your student arrives to the College after 8.45am they must sign in at the front office. They will require a note from a parent or alternatively a parent/guardian can bring the student to the front office for a late slip. If your child is late and does not have a note they will be signed in late unexplained and they will be expected to bring in a note the next day to explain the late arrival. Reporting an Absence – when advising the College of an absence or late arrival you have the following options: 1. 2. 3. 4.

Phone the office Absence App available for ‘I’ devices. Go to itunes to download the SJRC App Email – email the College email address: sjrhport@lism.catholic.edu.au Note - send in a note with your child to give to their PC teacher. Be sure to put your child’s first and last name on the note.

Compulsory School Attendance - Information for Parents All children from six years of age and under the minimum school leaving age of 17 years are legally required to attend school. All New South Wales students must complete Year 10. After Year 10 and until they turn 17 years of

age students must be in a school or registered for home schooling, or full-time in  further education and training (e.g. TAFE, traineeship, apprenticeship);  full-time, paid employment of an average 25 hours per week; or  a combination of both of the above. Did you know, that if a student misses as little as eight days in a school term, by the end of primary school they will have missed over a year of education? Must I send my child every day? YES. Children are expected to attend all school activities, on time. Regular attendance  helps your child develop the skills needed to access the world of work and other opportunities  helps your child to learn the importance of punctuality and routine  ensures your child can make and keep friendships What if my child has to stay away from school? If your child has to be absent from school, you must tell the school and provide a reason for your child’s absence WITHIN 7 DAYS of the absence. To explain an absence parents and carers may  telephone the school, or  send a note, fax or email to the school, or  visit the school A small number of absences may be accepted by the principal. For example, if your child has to  go to a special religious ceremony  is required to attend to a serious and/or urgent family situation (e.g. a funeral)  is too sick to go to school or has an infectious illness Absences of 10 days or more If a student is to be away for a period of 10 days or more (e.g. surgery, holiday, student exchange) parents must complete an ”Application for Extended Leave – Travel” or an ”Application for Exemption from Attendance at School” form which is available from the school. The Principal will consider your application and decide whether to grant a ‘Certificate of Exemption from Attendance at School’. Principals can grant exemptions from school attendance for 100 days or less in a 12 month period. However if the request for absence from school is over 101 days the application must go through the Catholic Schools Office to the Minister. Parents intending to seek an exemption must give the Principal at least a full term’s notice of the request. New government laws state that only in pressing circumstances should a Principal grant leave for family holidays. In all other cases the Principal is advised to record holidays as Absence without leave. What are school Principals responsible for? Principals help to ensure the safety, welfare and wellbeing of your child. Principals have to keep accurate records of student attendance and the reasons for any absences. Principals are responsible for accepting or not accepting a parent’s explanations for their child’s absences. Principals can request medical certificates or other documentation for long or frequent absences even where they are explained by parents as being due to illness. When absences are unexplained by parents, or the explanations are not accepted by the principal, schools work together with parents to help address the issue. The main aim is to sort out what is preventing the child from getting to school and putting strategies in place to help. Sometimes, the school will ask regional support staff and other agencies to assist. Cath Eichmann Assistant Principal- Pastoral

FROM THE LEADER OF CATECHESIS AND SCHOOL EVANGELISATION MAGAZINES WANTED Year 10 will be attending their retreat next week and we are in urgent need of any unwanted magazines, particularly action type magazines e.g. cars, surfing, truck etc. Magazines can be dropped to the College office. Year 7 Parent and Student Mass Please note the change in time for our Year 7 Parent and Student Mass on Tuesday March 31st. It was originally scheduled for 6pm but has been changed to 12 noon at St Agnes’ Church on Hay St. We are hoping parents who work In Port may be able to come along in their lunch break. Family Prayers for Lent One of the real challenges that we too often find in our busy lives is finding time to be together as a family. It is especially difficult to find opportunities to pray together. Here are a few possibilities for praying as a family during Lent or at any other time of the year. Prayer before Meals Meals are a natural time to pray as a family. We can begin by simply saying, "Let's pray," or "Let's pause for a minute to give thanks." This can be a brief prayer. Brief prayer doesn't have to be without substance or power. Praying at Other Times In the Morning: It can be quite transformative of our family bonds, in faith, to pause very briefly to pray together in the morning. This might be a spontaneous prayer, such as while we are lying in bed. When we are rushing around one another in the kitchen and grabbing breakfast, it can be wonderful to pause to pray and simply ask the Lord to be with each of us in what we are about to do. Other times: Such as cleaning up or in preparation for guests coming for dinner or for an overnight slumber party. We might share the responsibility for designing the family prayer for special occasions: birthdays, anniversaries, the beginning and end of a school year, the beginning of a new endeavor. Simple Rituals We can easily add gestures that bring powerful prayer to our family life. One of the simplest and most natural gestures is to trace a cross on a loved one's forehead. Praying for One Another The most important part of family prayer is perhaps the easiest to overlook: how we hold one another up to the Lord. Even when we are not physically together as a praying family, we want to pray for one another. May our Lord bless our praying, especially at home, in the community of our family, in these days of Lent. This is from Praying Lent by Andy Alexander, SJ, and Maureen McCann Waldron Nora Swain Leader of Catechesis and School Evangelisation

ANMM WOMEN AND SCIENCE SYMPOSIUM “The Women in Science Symposium at the museum is to encourage high school girls to look beyond the lab coats and to see the possibilities for scientific careers.” Recently, Claire Rocuet in Year 12 attended The Science Symposium facilitated by UNSW and the Australian National Maritime Museum. Please find below Claire’s report about her experience. On Friday the 6th of March, I travelled down to Sydney in order to attend the Women in Science Symposium organised by the Australian Maritime Museum in conjunction with the University of New South Wales to celebrate International Women's day. The Symposium played host to the Sydney launch of UNSW's Science 50:50 program with panellists from industry meeting together to discuss internships, mentoring pathways, networks and competitions for women in science. Science 50:50 is a program that aims to inspire young women to pursue degrees and careers in science and technology so they can succeed in an innovation-driven future. Science 50:50 makes the simple point – since half the population is female, why not half the scientists and technologists? By informing and engaging young women with the power of science and technology to solve complex problems and transform lives, and by introducing them to Australian scientists and innovators who are doing just that, Science 50:50 can help recalibrate the gender balance. The day consisted of a behind the scene tour to the conservation lab and storage room in the morning followed by the launch of the conference which included talks from different women who have achieved much in Science. As I am considering studying Physical Oceanography at UNSW next year, this was an incredible opportunity for me to ask questions of women who have achieved so much in that field, be inspired and network with professors, industry people and other students who are passionate about science just as I am. I had a great experience in Sydney and am motivated more than ever to work hard to achieve the goals I have set for myself for this final year of school.
