PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Year 10 Retreats This week we have conducted our Year 10 Retreats at Mt Seaview and Camp Obadiah. I would like to thank Ms Nora Swain and Mrs Helen Gilbert for the extensive organisation that went into these Retreats. A big “Thankyou” also to all staff who attended the Retreats and facilitated or supervised. We are indeed lucky to have staff who so willingly give of their time and take themselves away from their own family obligations to work with our students and give them these valuable experiences. Of course, Retreats can only be successful if the students themselves enter into them with a sense of cooperation and openness to new, and sometimes challenging, ideas. Thank you to all our Year 10 students who attended the Retreats and made it possible for them to be a worthwhile opportunity to explore their spirituality. Parent Teacher Interviews A reminder to parents that the Year 8 -12 interviews for those with surnames starting L to Z will be held in the College hall next Monday, March 23rd from 4:00pm to 7:30pm. Booking details can be found elsewhere in this newsletter. I would encourage all parents to attend these interviews if possible. It is always affirming for students when parents can bring home good news on their progress and behaviour at school. Excursions Good luck to students and staff as they embark on the following excursions next week: Senior Creative Arts (Music, Drama, Visual Art), Year 12 Geography, Year 12 Earth & Environmental Science. Once again, we are fortunate to have dedicated staff who are willing to give our students the valuable experiences that flow from these excursions God Bless Jim Dempsey Principal

NEWS FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL- PASTORAL

Dear parents Today is National Day against Bullying and Violence. All students heard from our College Captains at Wednesday’s assembly and today received a “Take a Stand Together” wristband. The College anti-bullying policy can be found in the student diary and on the College website. Here at the College we aim to create a safe and supportive College community for everyone. Sometimes, it can be difficult for parents or carers to know what to do when their child talks to them about bullying. You are an important part of our work to prevent bullying and to respond effectively if it happens. Stopping bullying involves everyone. If your child talks to you about bullying: 1.

Listen calmly and get the full story. Your calm response is important to allow your child to tell you all about the situation. After they’ve told you their story, ask questions to get more details if you need to: who, what, where, when. Although you may feel some strong emotions about your child’s experience, try to keep calm to avoid more distress to your child.

2.

Reassure your child they are not to blame. Many children blame themselves and this may make them feel even worse. You could say things like, ‘That sounds really hard to deal with. No one should have to put up with that.’ or ‘I’m so glad you told me. You should be able to feel safe at school; that’s not fair at all’.

3.

Ask your child what they want to do and what they want you to do. A critical part of your response is to avoid jumping in to solve the problem. While it is natural to want to protect your child, helping them to find their own solution is a better option. It helps them feel they have some power in the situation.

4.

Visit www.bullyingnoway.gov.au to find some strategies. The website has tips and ideas for different bullying situations. One idea is to practise strategies at home to help your child feel more confident.

5.

Contact the school. Your child may be reluctant for you to do this, so discuss the idea and reassure them that the school would want to know and is able to help. Make an appointment to meet with your child’s teacher and, if you need to, ask to talk with the principal. Contact the school immediately if you have a concern about your child’s safety.

6.

Check in regularly with your child. Keep the conversation going. It can take time to resolve issues, so check in regularly with your child about their experiences and their feelings. Your ongoing support is important.

FROM THE LEADER OF CATECHESIS AND SCHOOL EVANGELISATION Catholic Lenten Prayer Almighty and Everlasting God, You have given the human race Jesus Christ our Saviour as a model of humility. He fulfilled Your Will by becoming Man and giving His life on the Cross. Help us to bear witness to You by following His example of suffering and make us worthy to share in His Resurrection. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son.

Year 10 Retreat: Commitment We will have a full report with pictures from our Year 10 retreat in next week’s newsletter, but I wanted to thank all parents for their support of our retreat program. I had the privilege of spending the first half of this week at Obadiah with some of our students and staff. The students were fantastic in their cooperation and involvement with all the activities and reflections that were part of the experience. We were fortunate to have our Youth Ministry Officers from the parish to assist with the retreat. They are wonderful witnesses to our students in sharing their stories and commitment of faith. A special thank you to Mrs Helen Gilbert and Mr Frank Johnson for the planning, preparation and organisation of this wonderful experience.

Background information (student name, gender, date of birth, language background and Aboriginality) will be collected as part of the National Assessment Program.
