PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE YEAR 11 REFLECTION DAY This week our Year 11 students participated in a reflection day at the College. The focus of the day was about:    

making informed decisions setting priorities relationships, and making good choices.

God calls us to be the best person we can be with all the gifts we have been given. It’s important every now and then to stop and reflect on our journey of self- discovery and how God can provide insight and guide us along the way. The day was facilitated by David Kobler and his wife Katie from Choicez Media. Their presentations were very engaging and assist the students in their small group discussions which were led by the Senior Pastoral Care Teachers. The comments from the students have been very positive. During the lunchtime break, staff and students shared a picnic lunch. A special thank you to Heidi Flanagan, Year 11 Leader of Pastoral Care and also the senior Pastoral Care Teachers for their preparation, organisation and participation in the day’s activities

YEAR 8-12 PARENT TEACHER EVENING On behalf of the staff of St Joseph’s Regional College, we are looking forward to meeting the many families that have booked interviews for our first Year 8-12 Parent Teacher evening next Monday, 9th March starting at 4.00pm. NEWS FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL- PASTORAL ABSENT FROM SCHOOL ALL ABSENCES AND LATE ARRIVALS MUST PROVIDE A NOTE WITHIN 7DAYS OR THE ABSENCE/LATE WILL NOT BE CHANGED AND WILL APPEAR ON THE STUDENTS REPORT. Late to school: if your student arrives to the College after 8.45am they must sign in at the front office. They will require a note from a parent or alternatively a parent/guardian can bring the student to the front office for a late slip. If your child is late and does not have a note they will be signed in late unexplained and they will be expected to bring in a note the next day to explain the late arrival. Reporting an Absence – when advising the College of an absence or late arrival you have the following options: 1. 2. 3. 4.

Phone the office Absence App available for ‘I’ devices. Go to itunes to download the SJRC App Email – email the College email address: sjrhport@lism.catholic.edu.au Note - send in a note with your child to give to their PC teacher. Be sure to put your child’s first and last name on the note.

Compulsory School Attendance - Information for Parents All children from six years of age and under the minimum school leaving age of 17 years are legally required to attend school. All New South Wales students must complete Year 10. After Year 10 and until they turn 17 years of age students must be in a school or registered for home schooling, or full-time in  further education and training (e.g. TAFE, traineeship, apprenticeship);  full-time, paid employment of an average 25 hours per week; or  a combination of both of the above. Did you know, that if a student misses as little as eight days in a school term, by the end of primary school they will have missed over a year of education? Must I send my child every day? YES. Children are expected to attend all school activities, on time. Regular attendance  helps your child develop the skills needed to access the world of work and other opportunities  helps your child to learn the importance of punctuality and routine  ensures your child can make and keep friendships What if my child has to stay away from school? If your child has to be absent from school, you must tell the school and provide a reason for your child’s absence WITHIN 7 DAYS of the absence. To explain an absence parents and carers may  telephone the school, or  send a note, fax or email to the school, or  visit the school A small number of absences may be accepted by the principal. For example, if your child has to  go to a special religious ceremony  is required to attend to a serious and/or urgent family situation (e.g. a funeral)  is too sick to go to school or has an infectious illness

Absences of 10 days or more If a student is to be away for a period of 10 days or more (e.g. surgery, holiday, student exchange) parents must complete an ”Application for Extended Leave – Travel” or an ”Application for Exemption from Attendance at School” form which is available from the school. The Principal will consider your application and decide whether to grant a ‘Certificate of Exemption from Attendance at School’. Principals can grant exemptions from school attendance for 100 days or less in a 12 month period. However if the request for absence from school is over 101 days the application must go through the Catholic Schools Office to the Minister. Parents intending to seek an exemption must give the Principal at least a full term’s notice of the request. New government laws state that only in pressing circumstances should a Principal grant leave for family holidays. In all other cases the Principal is advised to record holidays as Absence without leave. What are school Principals responsible for? Principals help to ensure the safety, welfare and wellbeing of your child. Principals have to keep accurate records of student attendance and the reasons for any absences. Principals are responsible for accepting or not accepting a parent’s explanations for their child’s absences. Principals can request medical certificates or other documentation for long or frequent absences even where they are explained by parents as being due to illness. When absences are unexplained by parents, or the explanations are not accepted by the principal, schools work together with parents to help address the issue. The main aim is to sort out what is preventing the child from getting to school and putting strategies in place to help. Sometimes, the school will ask regional support staff and other agencies to assist. Cath Eichmann Assistant Principal- Pastoral

FROM THE LEADER OF CATECHESIS AND SCHOOL EVANGELISATION Year 7 Reflection Day “We Belong and Journey Together” This week (March 12) the Year 7 students will be participating in a reflection day that is part of their first unit of study in the Religious Education curriculum. Year 7 Parent and Student Mass Please note the change in time for our Year 7 Parent and Student Mass on Tuesday March 31 st. It was originally scheduled for 6pm but has been changed to 12 noon at St Agnes’ Church on Hay St. We are hoping parents who work In Port may be able to come along in their lunch break. Family Prayers for Lent One of the real challenges that we too often find in our busy lives is finding time to be together as a family. It is especially difficult to find opportunities to pray together. Here are a few possibilities for praying as a family during Lent or at any other time of the year. Prayer before Meals Meals are a natural time to pray as a family. We can begin by simply saying, "Let's pray," or "Let's pause for a minute to give thanks." This can be a brief prayer. Brief prayer doesn't have to be without substance or power. Praying at Other Times In the Morning: It can be quite transformative of our family bonds, in faith, to pause very briefly to pray together in the morning. This might be a spontaneous prayer, such as while we are lying in bed. When we are rushing around one another in the kitchen and grabbing breakfast, it can be wonderful to pause to pray and simply ask the Lord to be with each of us in what we are about to do. Other times: Such as cleaning up or in preparation for guests coming for dinner or for an overnight slumber party. We might share the responsibility for designing the family prayer for special occasions: birthdays, anniversaries, the beginning and end of a school year, the beginning of a new endeavor. Simple Rituals We can easily add gestures that bring powerful prayer to our family life. One of the simplest and most natural gestures is to trace a cross on a loved one's forehead. Praying for One Another The most important part of family prayer is perhaps the easiest to overlook: how we hold one another up to the Lord. Even when we are not physically together as a praying family, we want to pray for one another. May our Lord bless our praying, especially at home, in the community of our family, in these days of Lent. This is from Praying Lent by Andy Alexander, SJ, and Maureen McCann Waldron Nora Swain Leader of Catechesis and School Evangelisation

YEAR 9 VISUAL ART- Portrait in Art Year 9 visual art students are currently studying the genre of the portrait in art. Students were asked to create a lead drawing of either themselves or a person close to them showing the essence of the person and demonstrating their understanding of creating a portrait structurally with the correct proportions. Students also studied the historical court case in 1943 where artist William Dobell won the Archibald prize with the portrait of his friend Joshua Smith. This portrait caused controversy over the fact that he painted Smith in a very elongated/characterised style which pushed the boundaries of what was acceptable as a 'likeness' in portraiture and the scope of what was accepted as a portrait in the future of the Archibald competition that remains so popular today. The following letter is to the editor was written by Elizabeth Pike in the eyes of a passionate lover of art in 1943.

29th August 1943 16 Grecian St Redfern Sydney NSW 2040 Australia Dear Editor Sydney Morning Herald, It has come to my attention that the SMH is requesting members of the art community and general public to give their opinion and perspective on this year’s Archibald Prize winning entry of Joshua Smith by William Dobell. My name is Elizabeth Pike and I am writing to you on behalf of the Redfern Art Committee, this letter is a collective summary of each individuals opinion on the artwork and all it embodies. Therefore, we strongly believe, unlike many that Dobell’s painting of Joshua Smith is a true portrait, not a caricature. Myself and the RAC have researched and analysed many newspaper articles, tapes and records, and have come to realise the distribution of repulsion towards the winning entry amongst Australians. You may contest that the piece complies to the criteria of a caricature and that the proportions of Smiths, arms, fingers, neck and other body features is far past that of a traditional portrait, it is a known fact that Smith has elongated features and it is truly absurd and outrageous that people are using it as a legitimate reason to label the painting as a caricature. William Dobell admits that he utilised distortion in the artwork but to use it to the extent of a caricature was not and is not intended. The entire debate and doubt about whether the artwork is portraiture or otherwise is completely unnecessary and foolish, and it should certainly not be commended. Furthermore, the only real complication with the artwork is the shameful things people are saying about it. Art is shared by everyone and everyone has an opinion, but there is a fine line between having an opinion and critiquing an artwork compared to degrading and saying offensive and malicious things. For example, James McDonald was reported saying, ‘Mr Smith is pilloried to external, skeletal deformity in the name of up-to-the-minute portraiture…this epitome of ugliness, malformation and gruesome taste! His words reflect the true issue of the painting not the debate as to whether it is a portrait. Mary Edwards who also shared her opinion on the artwork, recommended that women and children should not visit the NSW Art Gallery. Their words are unjustly and highly rude, far from, constructive! Lastly, the RAC has come to realise that what the art community and general public really have against the Archibald Prize winning entry is that is the future of Australian and National art, it is modern without being abstract, contemporary without becoming unrecognisable and people do not notice the true beauty within the artwork itself that is creating a new and exciting standard for artists and artworks to come. You may not find the portrait of Joshua Smith by William Dobell overly appealing, but that is because it is unique, different and original, not disgusting, gruesome and ugly, we will all come to realise that all artwork is beautiful; it is just the way you look at it. You may not understand that the face of art is changing, because it already has. In conclusion, William Dobell’s painting of Joshua Smith is a true masterpiece and is shaping the future of art for generations to come. On behalf of the RAC thank you for this opportunity to depict how strongly we feel about the portrait. Sincerely, 29th August 1943 Elizabeth Pike Redfern Art Committee
