PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE On behalf of the staff of St Joseph’s Regional College I wish to extend to all families a very warm welcome back to the 2015 school year. People of Commitment Our College theme this year is commitment. As you know each year we choose a word that reflects what we value and believe to be important in our College community. Commitment is a powerful word…. A word that leads to action. We all have commitments we have made in our marriages, relationships, in our families, in the community, in our jobs. What we are committed to as a College community is reflected in our College prayer and Christ centred Learning statement. As a College community, we are committed to striving for academic excellence as is any school but we are committed to more than that. At the heart of our community is our commitment in passing on the gospel values through our relationships and interactions with students, parents and colleagues. By relating according to the Gospel values we proclaim, this year we want to make a special effort to incorporate the key words of this statement into the language we use with our students. Firstly we have the 4 high order proficiency words of thinking critically and creatively, communication and collaboration (4 c’s) combined key aspects of growth in character; relationships, respect, resilience and responsibility (4 r’s). This year it is our intention to embed these words into the language we use with students.

Staff New to St Joseph’s Regional I would like to extend a special welcome to Mr Tim McCosker who recently has been appointed to the position of Assistant Principal (Administration and Curriculum) at St Joseph's Regional College. Tim comes to us with a wealth of experience in a variety of domains as a highly effective Campus Principal and educator and leader previously at MacKillop Senior College. No doubt, Tim, in unison with Cath Eichmann (Assistant Principal - Pastoral and Staff) will play pivotal roles in our ongoing formation as a College which enables students to achieve academic excellence and, indeed, encourages them to persevere to become the best young people they can possibly be.

PARISH ADMINISTRATION MESSAGE Welcome back to the 2015 School Year I would just like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a ‘smooth’ start to the year. Hopefully by the time you read this, books, stationery, uniforms, shoes, I.T. requirements etc, are all sorted for the commencement of another year. It is a privilege to work in this new position of Coordinating Executive Officer for St Agnes’ Parish. Whilst I am not a big one on titles, the key word in the title is ‘coordinating’. My role is to coordinate the educational endeavour of the Parish to ensure that our six schools are all working together to achieve common goals. The other important aspect of the position is to strengthen the links between the schools and the Parish. The Catholic school contributes significantly to the Church’s mission to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ. The Catholic school offers the Catholic community and indeed the people of Australia, an educational formation for the full development of young people – intellectually, spiritually, physically, morally and emotionally. This is done in partnership with parents and carers. A warm welcome to all the new families commencing in Parish schools this year and of course to the 47 new members of staff. Welcome back to Karen Robson, Assistant Principal at St Peter’s and to Anne O’Brien, the new Principal of the combined St Paul’s and MacKillop Senior College, now known as MacKillop College. I look forward to working with all of the Parish school communities in 2015. Best wishes John McQueen Coordinating Executive Officer (Parish Education)

Ms Heidi Flanagan Leader of Pastoral Care- Year 11

LOCKERS Lockers are currently being allocated to Year Seven students who have requested one. If your child requires a locker but has not yet requested one please send in a note to the office stating such. This year the College has purchased combination locks, which will remain the property of the College and must be returned at the end of the year. Students are not permitted to use their own locks, they must use the College allocated lock. All lock combinations are recorded against a locker number. Locker hire for the year is $20.00, which will be billed to your account once your child has been allocated a locker. This fee includes locker hire & use of the lock for the school year. Allocation of lockers to all other year groups will take place over next coming weeks. Students will be advised through morning notices and also via announcements during recess and lunch times. If a student requires a locker for medical reasons, please contact Mrs Lisa Bulley in the College office to make immediate arrangements for a locker.

UNIFORM 2015 REMINDERS As many students have outgrown their uniforms, we wish to remind parents and students that our uniform requirements are clearly outlined on our College website. To avoid issues, please note the following reminders: School Shoes - Many parents will need to purchase new school shoes for their sons and daughters. Please remember that the College requires these to be plain black, polishable lace-up ALL leather shoes. (No high tops, boots or ripple soles, skate type shoes or logos. No buckle shoes or open top shoes. Heels should not be more than 2.5cm.) Sport shoes must be proper sports shoes. School shoes are not to be worn as part of the sports uniform. Please note images of a selection of correct and incorrect shoes can be found on the College website under ‘Quick Links”. Please be aware Nike and Converse school shoes are not permitted as they have rubber toes and ARE NOT all leather. Girls Skirts- Skirts MUST be KNEE-LENGTH. Piercing and Hair Styles and Colour- Some students choose to have piercings and variation to hair colour and styles in the holidays. A reminder that these must comply with College rules when students return in 2015. Please note: Band-Aids are not permitted to be worn to cover new piercings. Cath Eichmann Assistant Principal – Pastoral and Staff STUDENT'S LEAVING SCHOOL SICK and MOBILE PHONE USE Just a reminder that students in Years 7-10 are not permitted to use their mobile phone between the hours of 8.15am-3.15pm. The College rules clearly state this and it is College policy that students using the mobile will have it confiscated until parents can pick it up and the student will be given an afternoon detention.

We have an increasing incidence of student's phoning parents to pick them up sick, without going through the correct channels of going to the front office where an office staff member or teacher will contact the parents, or allow a student to phone home using a College phone. If your child does contact you from a mobile phone we would ask that you contact the front office prior to coming out to the College in order to avoid an uncomfortable situation for all concerned, and detentions having to be issued. Please note that regular late arrivals and early departures are detrimental to your child's overall attendance rate and education. Thanks for your ongoing support. Cath Eichmann Assistant Principal – Pastoral and Staff

MEDICAL CONDITIONS The College will be updating its records shortly for students with medical conditions. With respect to students who may suffer from serious medical conditions, the College keeps a record in the staffroom of the student and intervention required in the event that immediate action is needed whilst at school. In respect of other medical conditions we also keep a computer record for reference as required. We would ask that parents please notify the College of the following: 1. If your son/daughter has a medical condition that you believe may require intervention at school, please provide written details to the College office. 2. If at any time you believe that your son/daughter may have either measles or chickenpox we would ask that you contact the College as soon as possible. It is very important that the College be notified of these conditions due to the threat to other students with low immune systems. 3. If your son/daughter may suffer from anaphylactic reaction we ask you to provide written details as soon as possible.
