COORDINATING PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE COORDINATING PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE NOT ONE OF US! The following is an excerpt from an article written by a friend Professor Gerard Hall SM from the Australian Catholic University. It is a good reminder about our responsibilities as Christians to be tolerant and accepting of other people irrespective of their differences. “It’s good to belong to a tribe, group, family or community. We feel a sense of belonging. We share the same values, like the same music, speak the same language and enjoy the same jokes. We might play in the same team, go to the same movies, read the same books and holiday together. Occasionally, there will be a sibling rivalry, maybe family feuds, but we know our identities are formed and affirmed in our relationships with like-minded people. But what is our attitude to the outsider? Do we find ourselves rejecting others because they don’t belong to our clan? Are we welcoming or intolerant of the stranger? Jesus found himself dealing with one-eyed disciples. John tries to stop a man performing miracles in Jesus’ name. Why? “He was not one of us!” How easy it is to divide the world into us versus them. We are familiar with stories of religious bigotry, ethnic hatred and class warfare. Too often, people guard their place in the world by rejecting the ‘Other’ as humanly inferior, morally deficient or simply ‘not one of us’. Whether white or black, rich or poor, Christian or Muslim, Jew or Gentile, male or female, gay or straight, saint or sinner – we are all chosen and blessed by God. On this, Catholic teaching is quite clear: “The Church reproves as foreign to the mind of Christ any discrimination against others on account of race, colour condition of life, or religion” (Vatican 11’s Nostra Aetate). If this appears obvious, the Council goes further by insisting we enter into dialogue with other traditions to learn from them the ways in which a generous God has distributed gifts among all peoples and nations. As Jesus taught, there are no outsiders. Let us then embrace the stranger.” As a Catholic school we invite families of all denominations who support the values and ethos of an education in the Catholic tradition, to apply for enrolment. It is an education that focuses on the development of the whole person and promotes excellence in teaching and learning, in pastoral care, in spiritual formation, in sport and in the creative and performing arts. PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE YEAR 11 AWARD ASSEMBLY Last Friday we had our Year 11 award assembly. Our Year 11 group has been a very positive and hardworking group of students. We congratulate the award winners on their conscientious efforts towards academic excellence and I commend all Year 11 students on their diligent approach to their senior studies thus far. I thank all staff involved as they are committed to giving our students the best education possible.

YEAR 10 Awards I would like to invite all families to our Mass and Year 10 Academic Award ceremony on Monday 17th December. Our Mass starts at 9.30am and our Prize-giving at 11.30 am. Both celebrations will be in the College Hall. It will be the final school day for Year 10 students for 2012. Sixty students will be attending Newman Senior Technical College in 2013 to further their education and some students are leaving the area. This day therefore is significant in that it is the last time they will be together at the College. All Year 10 are asked to wear their full winter uniform which includes a tie, so please put them somewhere in safe keeping. YEARS 7 - 9 AWARD CEREMONY This is another important day hence the advance notice. We certainly encourage students to work towards excellence so it is high in our priorities to acknowledge their success as well. We will celebrate Years 7-9 achievements on Thursday 20th December and school will finish on Thursday with this final award ceremony. Thursday 20th December: 9.15am Award Ceremony – 1st place in Subject Awards, Speaking Awards, Dux of each year. 11.30am Innes and Flinders Excellence and Application Awards 1.00 pm Macquarie & Oxley Excellence and Application Awards

FEES Sincere thanks to all parents who have finalised their school fees with the parish and their student fees with the College secretaries. We aim to have all our finances up to date as the term ends and in order for this to happen we need parents to settle their accounts. An account will be sent out next week listing any outstanding fees. I ask that all parents attend to this matter within the timeframe stated. Unfortunately any student who does not pay fees and return all library books will not receive their report. Certainly an awful position to be in. Any family who is having difficulty is asked to contact me at school immediately please.

2013 ENROLMENTS We currently have a large number of families on waiting lists for enrolments into each of the Year groups. In order to offer places it is essential that the school knows if any students will not be continuing here next year. If your son or daughter will not be continuing at St Joseph’s Regional College in 2013, please advise the school office in writing as soon as possible. UNIFORM Thank you to the many students who present themselves each day in full school uniform and are such wonderful ambassadors for our College. Unfortunately, I am forced to say that some students are letting us down in this important area. One area of concern in particular is the length of girls’ dresses. Some girls are wearing their dresses embarrassingly short. They have been spoken to about this matter throughout the year, and will be asked to go home if they continue to ignore our uniform requirements. Students who have grown out of uniform items would be expected to replace them and I am very happy to assist if finance is the concern. Girls who do not have a summer uniform which is the appropriate length are asked to wear their winter uniform as this change is to be implemented over the next year.

FROM THE RELIGIOUS EDUCATION COORDINATOR SEE SHARP PERFORMANCE Today we had the privilege of having inspirational speaker Lorin Nicholson address our staff and Year 10 and Year 11 students. Lorin is in Port Macquarie to be guest speaker at the West Port Club’s 2012 Annual Sports Awards Presentation Dinner. He truly is an inspiration with so many accomplishments including riding from Brisbane to Melbourne to raise money for Vision Australia. Making this ride even more daunting is the fact that Lorin has been legally blind since the age of 4. He is also an accomplished musician and has presented over 3000 motivational presentations to schools and corporate organisations around Australia, New Zealand and USA. His message included the impact teachers and leaders have on the lives of all students, creating an inclusive school environment as well as social challenges like bullying, anti-social behaviour and diversity. We thank the West Port Club for providing us with this wonderful opportunity of having Lorin visit our school community and providing us with a very profound message for staff and students.

YEAR 11 REFLECTION DAY: “PASSPORT TO YOUR FUTURE” Thank you to the staff and students who participated today in our Year 11 Reflection Day. The day provided an opportunity for students to look at their goals and strategies for coping with this important year ahead as they face the HSC. The day concluded with a liturgy. Thank you to the students who entered into the spirit of the day and I’m sure gained valuable insights to meet with success in the months ahead. Thank you to Mr Hassett who coordinated the day’s activities. Nora Swain – Religious Education Coordinator

LOST PROPERTY If any students or parents would like to have a look through lost property for items they can do so on Wednesdays at recess and Thursdays at lunch time. A reminder to ensure that ALL items are clearly labelled with students name and PC class. Over the year there have been a number of jewellery items and watches handed to the office, please phone if you have a missing item.

HIKING AND ADVENTURE IN NEW ZEALAND 2014 In conjunction with the Duke of Edinburgh program and St Paul’s High School. Positions are available for SJRC students to do a 9 day trip to New Zealand in January 2014. Including: a 3 day hike of the Milford Track, Overnight cruise, Gondola ride, Zip-lining, Jet Boating, Luge rides and Canyoning. Cost would be approximately $2,500.00. If enough expressions of interests are received, an information night will be held in Week 4. Please note that this trip is only available for students who would be enrolled in Year 10 or above in 2014. Email jrossington@lism.catholic.edu.au with your child’s name if you would be interested in receiving more information about this trip. SCIENCE MATTERS The Essential Secondary Science Assessment (ESSA) test for Year 8 students will be held on Tuesday 13 November 2012. The test takes approximately 80 minutes with it being an interactive, multimedia test completed entirely on a computer. All the year 8 students have completed the practice test and are familiar with the process. Since students complete ESSAonline on a computer, each student needs to bring headphones or earbuds that plug into a school computer. Earbuds for an ipod or portable player are suitable. These will be collected prior to the test by teachers and held until the test day. If you have any questions regarding the test please feel free to contact either myself or your child’s Science Teacher. Damian Bennie - Science Coordinator

FROM THE OFFICE If you have recently changed your email address please email your new address to sjrhport@lism.catholic.edu.au LIBRARY NEWS PARENT LIBRARY Our College Library houses numerous titles which have been purchased or donated for use by parents. The Diocese of Lismore Catholic Schools Parent Assembly has kindly donated many of these, and this week, we present a review of one of them. Please contact Library staff if you would like to borrow this, or indeed any of the forthcoming reviewed titles. “The Princess Bitchface Syndrome” by Michael Carr-Gregg is subtitled “Surviving Adolescent Girls. Dr Carr-Gregg is one of Australia’s leading authorities on teenage behaviour, specialising in the area of parenting adolescents and adolescent mental health. This book deals with the way in which girls’ physical development is way ahead of their cognitive capacities, thereby fast-tracking into pseudo-adulthood. It’s a must-read for every parent with an adolescent daughter. Contact Library staff to arrange to borrow this item.

BOOK RETURN Today, Year 11 students with overdue Preliminary textbook loans have been billed the replacement cost of those items. This is so that we can set about ensuring we have the required amount of resources for our incoming 2013 Year 11 students. All Year 11 students were emailed their overdue lists this week. As the academic year draws to a close, it is timely to remind all students and parents that book return is an essential part of every College student’s obligations, and that losses must be paid for. Important dates for this aspect of College life will be published in forthcoming newsletters.
