The Importance of Being Earnest

Wow! That‘s a tough one. It really depends on when you ask. These days I find myself with a soft spot for Parmigiana di Melanzane, a aubergine lasagna.

Past November 11th the theater opened its newest show The Importance of Being Earnest. In the director’s chair sits no lesser man than Þorsteinn Bachman, who is a known actor on stage, in TV and in cinema. Every year the board of the theater chooses a director and a play to be cast. “[…] he tries to work with the actors and get as much out of them as he can,” says Flóki about Þorstein who got the pick this year. That was because he is experienced and has knowledge and understanding that he can communicate to others.

Do you always cook in your home? Yes it seems to always end up like that but my husband is very good at doing the dishes and cleaning up so we divide the tasks between us. Have you always had an interest in cooking? Yes you might say so. It started you might say of ill necessity because I‘m sort of a choosy person. Not that my mother was a bad chef, she wasn’t, she is my role model in my cooking. Maybe it’s rather that I choose to do things my way. Gourmet and chef Rikka Friðrika Hjördís Geirsdóttir or Rikka as she is generally called has not sat idle handed lately. The student paper got to know this powerful woman. Rikka studied cooking at Le Cordon Bleu culinary school in London and has since delivered her knowledge and experience to Icelanders. She has published a few cook books as well as running a cooking show on Channel 2 where she travels to the many corners of the world mediating her experiences in food and cooking of the many different cultures to the viewer at home.

Now Christmas is coming, what does Rikka eat at Christmas? I am very conservative during Christmas and always eat glazed ham with everything that comes with. I brown the potatoes especially well and would rather have a very thick layer of caramel on them. A Recipe for an interesting theater There is a lot happening at the student theater these days. Our journalist found out various things when he met Flóki Snorrason, the chairman of the Student Council 2011-2012.

A Critique of a linguistic expert The Importance of Being Earnest by the known British writer Oscar Wilde was first cast in London 1895. Wilde was a linguistic expert and according to Flóki the whole piece is built on dialogue between people, word games and funny conversations. This critique on our society is believed to be the most Wilde‘s most important piece ever written. Fierce Competition Flóki says rehearsals are going well and the play year has been blessed by luck so far. “There were many excellent actors that did not get a spot in our cast this year,” Flóki tells us. At first the applicant group was about 40 people. After fierce competition the group ended up as 9 actors who form the student theater this year. Flóki believes this to be people who share a common thinking and common goals. He adds that this is what makes the group as tight as it is.

Acting in Eldborg The centennial anniversary of UI was celebrated in Eldborg in Harpa on the 8th of October. The Student Theater played a role in the celebrations. “We showed a play that was sort of an extraction of the 100 year history of UI,” says Flóki. When the Student Theater needed more people for this cast, some of the people who did not survive the cut earlier got a chance to join in.
