Please say hello to Samir Savant CH I EF E XECU TIV E O F S T GEO R GE’ S B R I S TO L

I am delighted to introduce myself as the new Chief Executive, and to thank you, our audiences and donors, for your unwavering support during the pandemic and as we emerge from lockdown.

I also wish to extend my sincere gratitude to Suzanne Rolt for her extraordinary leadership of St George's over the last 15 years. I have spent the last 20 years in the cultural sector in London, latterly as Festival Director of the London Handel Festival, and I come to St George’s brimming with excitement, ideas and enthusiasm! As ever, we have a rich and varied programme of events and I hope there is something for everyone. I am pleased to announce our new relationship with the acclaimed Manchester Collective, who come to us fresh from the BBC Proms. We also welcome back our Keyboard Festival, an expansive mix of international and local artists, established and emerging names, including Pavel Kolesnikov playing Bach's Goldberg Variations, and the winner of the Leeds Piano Competition 2021. And on the 50th anniversary of Marvin Gaye’s iconic album What’s Going On, look out for the world-class Nu Civilisation Orchestra paying homage to the album and reflecting on current times through the lens of Gaye’s music. This is a small selection of autumn events — you can discover our full programme online, including the many fantastic local ensembles and choirs that perform at St George’s and contribute so actively to the creative life of Bristol. St George’s is the most wonderful and vibrant venue, and I cannot wait to take up my role in September, ready to welcome you back in person to a brilliant programme of live events this autumn.

This autumn we launch two big series that will run into next year and beyond. REBEL MUSIC As the world rapidly changes, this series explores protest and politics through the prism of music: music as a rallying cry, a means to challenge and disrupt — a way not only to reflect but also change the values of society. Katya Gorrie Trio

NATURE RECONNEC T Inspired by our beautiful gardens, this series aims to provide opportunities through music and spoken word to rediscover and reevaluate our relationship with wildlife, plants and the great outdoors. Keep an eye online for more information about these series and their events.

These tiny jewel-like masterpieces paint a kaleidoscopic portrait of village life in all its human frailty and passion: men and women fall in and out of love, with squabbles and petty jealousies heard alongside exquisite serenades and love songs. It is a songbook filled with humour and charm, tenderness, despair and delight. This is a new, critically acclaimed English translation of Italienisches Liederbuch.

Classical elegance, tenderness and pathos, and the occasional flare of keyboard pyrotechnics — for her debut solo recital at St George’s, Isata Kanneh-Mason has chosen a programme of wide-ranging moods and emotions. An artist of early and prodigious talent, and eldest sibling of a modern family of classical musicians with no equal, this performance promises to be something very special indeed. Isata speaks for a generation of musicians breaking down the doors of the classical music industry — but she also allows her music to speak for itself. isatakannehmason.com

With support from Eleven Magpies An evening of deliciously uncategorisable instrumental music. Bristol’s acoustic multiinstrumental chamber-folk trio Three Cane Whale return to their favourite venue with a panoply of familiar and unusual instruments, and a set of atmospheric landscape-inspired tunes drawn from their four albums, as well as brand new unreleased material. Support is from old friends the delightful Eleven Magpies, a four-piece of stringed instruments led by Wise Children’s Ian Ross, who’ll be unveiling their new album 2 4 Joy. Expect a collaborative ending to the programme which should prove wholeheartedly that three plus eleven is actually six... threecanewhale.com

Christmas is a time for celebration and jubilation and the OAE’s festive programme offers this in abundance. With so few chances this year to encounter live music, this is a gift of a concert that brings to sparkling life music by the Baroque greats, from JS Bach and Buxtehude to Corelli and Schutz. And no festive offering would be complete without a nod to Handel’s joyful Messiah, and even an invitation to the audience to raise its own carol singing voice to the spirited accompaniment of the glorious instruments of the OAE. oae.co.uk

Awake Arise! A Christmas Show For Our Times TH U R S DAY 23 D ECEM B ER   |  8 P M £ 18  |  £ 15

In an unmissable collaboration, five of the English folk scene’s most inventive artists bring you Awake Arise —A Christmas Show For Our Times; celebrating the riches of our varied winter traditions and reflecting upon the hope and resilience in music and song that can bring joy to us all in the darkest season.

Award winning trio Lady Maisery are joined by the beguiling musical partnership of Jimmy Aldridge and Sid Goldsmith, with outstanding vocals, sensitive instrumentation and powerful social conscience that has won them widespread critical acclaim. Featuring traditional songs, folk carols, spoken word and newly written music to galvanise and brighten this darkest season, Awake Arise is a warm gift to the wintertime. True to the reputations of both acts as out-spoken voices on the folk scene, this collection is also a rallying cry to embrace the power of collective endeavour as a vital support during times of hardship and loneliness. Awake Arise is more than just a great night out; these are essential songs which remind us who we are and why we matter to each other.
