Welcome

The Art of Change I’m told that in Japan the concept of change has a dual aspect: there is the gradual, step by step development of ‘kaizen’, and the sudden, explosive change of ‘horshin’. At St George’s we have adopted both — in (and with) spades! This autumn both audiences and artists should notice small improvements that lift the experience of visiting the hall (from WiFi to increased provision of toilets and an extended artists green room). In February, the curtains will part to reveal the new extension for the first time and the impulse driving our vision for St George’s will be clear for all to see active spaces supporting a broader programme than ever before; quiet rooms to explore and reflect on the history of the hall, architecture and music; and open-all-day, light filled areas to meet friends over a drink and relax before and concerts that follow. The disruptive force of this change is unavoidable and I can only ask for your patience and support as we progress through the final months of completion. New systems will be introduced and tested and teething problems are inevitable — but the prize will be well worth the wait and, whether you’re a regular visitor or tempted in for the first time, I hope the promise of some wonderful future events on the panels overleaf will tide you over.

The concert descriptions overleaf are shorter than usual but you can find more expansive information on our website. In January we’ll issue a more substantial brochure with full details not only of these same concerts, but new ones too. There’ll also be updates on how to make the best of your visit and to enjoy the new strands of events on offer. We’re expecting a lively atmosphere and keen interest from audiences across the city and region when we do reopen so make sure you’re quick off the mark and book early to guarantee the best seats. Please help us spread the word about the changes happening at St George’s and encourage people to come along to our Opening Weekend on Saturday 24 & Sunday 25 Feb — I can’t give too much away but expect an abundance of extraordinary live music, talks, activities, pop-up performances, and much, much more. Suzanne Rolt CHIEF EXECUTIVE
