Welcome to St George’s Bristol It’s finally here: the moment we throw open the doors and reveal the wonderful new contemporary pavilion that has risen up alongside St George’s celebrated concert hall. The high glazed façade beckons you towards it, offering a glimpse of Luke Jerram’s radiant glass sculpture ‘Apollo’ and a curvaceous stairwell that draws you around the new spaces. The ground floor is given over to a new café and bar where you can relax at any time of day and grab a drink or light bite to eat while enjoying views across the garden and soaking up the creative vibe and ever changing streams of artists, audiences and passers-by. Upstairs, you can head straight into the main hall to take your seat for an event in our main programme, or you can check out the growing diary of intimate events being held in the Glass and Garden Studios. We’re proud to say too that we’re now fully accessible with step free access via our Charlotte Street entrance.

Welcome

We want to make music a part of your everyday life so expect an expanding offering of talks, artist interviews, listening opportunities and films that take you under the skin of music and how and why it’s made. We’re also curious about culture at large and the ‘things that make us tick’ so whether it’s food, history, current affairs or fashion, we’ll be inviting you in to share ideas and get involved. To start things off, we’ve appointed our first ever Resident Philosopher, Julian Baggini, who promises to set you up for the day as he shares some espresso shots of thoughts and ideas that emerge through readings of the newspapers or perhaps a chat with a visiting artist. Violinist Nicola Benedetti brings a generous helping of star quality to our autumn Opening Night and, once started, there’s no end to the incredible array of events. We’re launching a new Bristol Keyboard Festival that roams across pianos, harpsichords and electronic keyboards and our three resident orchestras each make a welcome return, with the Chineke! Orchestra, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment making a splash with its Christmas Oratorio and Aurora Orchestra heralding in the New Year with an all-Mozart concert. Our contemporary programme leaps between jazz, folk,

roots and everything in between, and it’s a bumper season for female artists with BBC Folk Singer of the Year Karine Polwart, the ground-breaking Natacha Atlas and the extraordinary Syrian qanun player Maya Youssef. We couldn’t be more excited about the forthcoming season of music and hope you’ll feel the same. We’d like to thank everyone who has supported us throughout this ambitious project, either through donations, help in kind or a message of goodwill. We’re ready to welcome you in, so come and help us celebrate and enjoy our beautiful new spaces. Suzanne Rolt  Chief Executive

Oz Clarke Narrator Eloise Irving Soprano William Towers Counter-tenor Armonico Consort Christopher Monks Director

Jon Boden, ex-frontman of folk-giants Bellowhead, joins with the Sacconi Quartet for a reprise of Elvis Costello’s 1993 collaboration with the Brodsky Quartet. Described in Rolling Stone magazine at the time as ‘alternately biting and rueful, evoking the sardonic humour and bleak beauty of Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht’, The Juliet Letters is a striking sequence of dramatic ballads that reflect on love, betrayal and death. Four years before Costello teamed up with a string quartet, Steve Reich created another iconic collaboration – this time for quartet with its recorded self, and taped testimony from the Second World War.

Much-admired wine critic and broadcaster Oz Clarke joins Renaissance/Baroque specialists Armonico Consort for a highly entertaining evening investigating the deliciously colourful links between wine and music. Join them with a glass in hand, for this unique pairing of raconteur wit and expert wine insight, with sparkling performances. The music is served with three countryspecific glassfuls that Oz introduces: an English ale with Purcell, a German Riesling with Bach and Handel, and after some Monteverdi and Vivaldi, a Chilean Cabernet with the most upbeat South American Baroque dance music. In association with Averys Wine Merchants.

Reborn, their bold new programme for 2018, explores how the old gives birth to the new: archaic ideas are given strikingly modern relevance through great artists influencing and inspiring one another. Tansy Davies’ brilliant Residuum is a thrilling work for strings inspired by John Dowling’s Lachrimae, the same work on which Britten based his own Lachrymae. In a cross-collaboration with choreographer Alexander Whitley, the ensemble have created a mesmerising film to accompany Woolrich’s Ulysses Awakes, screened behind them as they perform. And to end the programme, one of the greatest works written, Schubert’s Death and the Maiden, arranged here for string orchestra.

If you missed the premiere, this is a second chance to witness the remarkable spectacle of St George’s packed to the rafters with a record number of brass band and choir members for composer Liz Lane’s extraordinary piece, Innovation 216. Described as ‘thrilling’, ‘fabulous’ and ‘a moving love letter to Bristol’s aviation story’, Innovation 216 is first to the runway in an extravaganza of flight and WWI inspired music, from the ‘Dam Busters March’ to ‘Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines’. Fasten your seat belts before take-off with the Lydbrook Band, training bands from City of Bristol, Lydbrook and Lydney bands, Gurt Lush Choir, Bristol MAN Chorus and members of the UWE Singers, conducted by Ian Holmes and Sam Burns.

Widely admired as a masterpiece, James MacMillan’s Seven Last Words From The Cross follows Christ’s final utterances at the crucifixion, meditating on each to form a dramatic and emotional sequence. The vocal writing is at times dramatic and intense, at others plaintive and tender. MacMillan’s use of vocal and instrumental is always mesmerising and deeply moving. One of the most exhilarating of all his choral works, Handel’s Dixit Dominus displays youthful vitality and energy throughout with strong Italian influences. ‘ A very impressive performance from an excellent choir’ B AC H T R AC K .CO M

Mark Kermode How Does It Feel? A Life of Musical Misadventures

Sons of Pitches plus Special Guests

Adored film critic Mark Kermode has written a hilarious, self-deprecating, blissfully nostalgic memoir that charts his riotous attempts to become a popstar. It tells the story of how a spotty kid from North London, who built an electric guitar at school, wound up recording an album at the legendary Sun Studios in Memphis. It follows Mark’s haphazard musical career, from inauspicious beginnings in 1970's church halls and youth clubs to performing live at the Albert Hall, via a mercifully short-lived stint in musical theatre and stand-up comedy.

The Sons of Pitches’ brand new show ‘100 Number One Hits’ is their most ambitious yet. Expect all kinds of genres – iconic songs, massive medleys, the odd tear jerker and plenty of spectacle. Since their formation in 2010, they have established themselves as one of the premiere vocal groups currently working in the UK, shooting to fame in 2015 when they were crowned winners of the BBC2 singing contest The Naked Choir, hosted by Gareth Malone. Their combination of soaring solos, impeccable harmonies and stunning beatboxing – mixed with a large dose of comedy – have captivated the public’s imagination. Presented by Live Nation

Ralph McTell

Men United A day of men’s singing in aid of Prostate Cancer UK

One of the great storytellers, Ralph McTell, is now celebrating more than 50 years on the road. Known for his virtuoso guitar style, he is primarily a prolific and gifted songwriter. With a style that invites you into a unique world, he weaves a narrative that is both significant and poignant.

Local male songsters The Magnificent AK47 are celebrating their tenth birthday this year by joining forces with the best of the Bristol male vocal scene. In the afternoon, look out for the Massive Magnificent ManSing – a huge workshop where some of the most respected singing leaders in the West are teaching songs to those who sing in the lower frequency range – as well as a special performance by the mighty Bristol Man Chorus. The evening concert includes performances by Bristol’s own Kettle of Fish, The Gasmen Collective and The Raff Pack who will join The Magnificent AK47 (the singing blokes of Ashton Keynes) along with some special guests. They’re also raising money for Prostate Cancer UK, an organisation with a simple ambition – to stop men dying from prostate cancer.

Ralph made his debut in 1968 with the album ‘Eight Frames a Second’ and in 1974 the release of ‘Streets of London’ earned him an Ivor Novello Award. In 2002 he was presented with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.

New Bristol Sinfonia with the Young Composers' Academy

Maya Youssef

The young composers of today are writing the music that will fill the lives of tomorrow’s audiences – so come and support the allimportant premieres of pieces by Sebrina Lambert-Rose, Max Mitchell and Emily Winsor, commissioned by St George’s Young Composer’s Academy scheme in association with the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation and performed by New Bristol Sinfonia.

Maya Youssef Qanun Elizabeth Nott Percussion Barney Morse-Brown Cello

To illuminate this spirit of innovation, New Bristol Sinfonia looks back to two other great turning points in classical music, with Stravinsky’s orchestral showpiece, Symphony in C, and the heart wrenching and ecstatic Prelude and Liebestod from Wagner's opera Tristan und Isolde.

‘The act of playing music is the opposite of death, it's a life and hope affirming act,’ says Youssef, virtuoso of the traditional Syrian 78-stringed plucked zither. Introduced at an early age by her family to a whole range of music from Arabic classical to Tibetan monks, Maya grew up in her native Syria determined to become a musician. Her extraordinary musical gift and generosity of outlook have brought comparisons with Ravi Shankar, Yehudi Menuhin and Meredith Monk, and she has performed all over, from the BBC Proms to WOMAD, either with her own groups or as part of Africa Express and The Orchestra of Syrian Musicians. This evening her trio performs her album Syrian Dreams. ‘It’s an often exquisite, emotional set that constantly changes mood’ T H E G UA R D I A N

Andy Sheppard / Espen Eriksen Trio

Serial collaborator Andy Sheppard’s latest musical partnership is with the renowned Norwegian trio led by pianist Espen Eriksen, with Lars Tormod Jenset on double bass and Andreas Bye, drums. The trio, who have so far released three acclaimed albums on the esteemed Rune Grammofon label, have perfected a lyrical, ‘chilled’ style of melodic jazz that more than bears comparison with Sweden’s e.s.t. It’s a style that suits tonight’s featured soloist Andy Sheppard down to the ground, serving up beautifully poised backdrops for his tenor and soprano sax to inhabit, reminiscent of Jan Garbarek with Keith Jarrett’s European Quartet.

Schubert  Sonata in E flat D568 Schubert  Sonata in A minor D784 Schubert  Sonata in A D959 We are thrilled to announce Mitsuko Uchida’s return to St George’s. Her Schubert sonata recordings for Philips date back to the late 1990s, so it is an enticing prospect to witness her return to this repertoire as part of a twoyear cycle in key European and US venues. Mitsuko describes, ‘Beethoven’s vision is of the cosmos. Mozart is about the drama and entanglements of human life and love. Schubert’s music is between life and death; he dreams, with his eyes on the far horizon. His music is at once personal and profound. Every note speaks and touches your soul.’

The Fantasy Orchestra Adventures In Transcription

Brothas With Attitude

The Fantasy Orchestra are an open-to-all community orchestra based in Bristol and Paris and are celebrating the release of their first LP which brings together an eclectic mix of music by diverse artists such as Sun Ra and Caetano Veloso, folk musician Richard Dawson, Brooklyn-based post punk duo Buke and Gase and electronic composer Distasterpeace, as well as local composers.

Following Ujima’s two great female-led performances it is now the turn of the men to take centre stage. Brothas With Attitude showcases singers, spoken word performers, DJs and other Bristol-based artists – with mental health and wellbeing as the main theme. Rewilding – A Visual Journey

Rough-hewn and raw, Lankum are one of the most talked about bands to come out of Ireland in decades. The Dublin four-piece are breathing new life into old music, combining distinctive four-part vocal harmonies with arrangements of uilleann pipes, concertina, accordion, fiddle and guitar. Their repertoire spans Dublin music hall ditties and street songs to classic ballads from the traveller tradition, influenced by legends such as Frank Harte and The Dubliners, with strange and subtle traces of American old-timey music, krautrock and drone.

Explore the case for a wilder Scotland and Europe through a stunning backdrop of beautiful wildlife film and photography. Award-winning photographers, filmmakers and conservationists who are telling the rewilding story, share their work and hopes for thriving wildlife and wild places. From reintroduced species such as lynx and beavers to revitalised landscapes, discover their vision for an ecologically rich and sustainable wild Europe that benefits all life, including humans.

‘There is folk that wants to whisper in your ear, and then there is the music of Lankum: urgent, desperate and detonating, full of lyrics and sounds smacking together like waves shattering stones in a storm’ 5/5 T H E G UA R D I A N

Bristol Keyboard Festival #BristolKeys Pianos – and keyboards of all shapes and sizes – have been at the heart of St George’s from the very start, joining the dots in a programme that roams across endless styles and ages of music. Remarkably, these most extraordinary of instruments have never had their own festival – until now! What better way to celebrate the recent transformation of St George’s than with the launch of this new Bristol Keyboard Festival. Join us for this non-stop, week-long festival as we look back over our shoulder to where the keyboard first started and fast forward to the realm of future possibilities… From Norwegian jazz supremo Tord Gustavsen on the opening night to St George's favourite Paul Lewis at the close, Bristol Keyboard Festival will celebrate the piano, and that special thing called pianism, in all its infinite variety. Along the way, enjoy pianistic encounters with the ever-engaging James Rhodes, Lucy Parham's Debussy show with Simon Russell Beale, a Leeds competition finalist, and the hi-tech, multi-media piano adventures of Zubin Kanga. But this festival doesn't stop there. We want to celebrate other keyboards too, and the musical magic that occurs when fingers press down on a range of black and white keys. So we're very happy to welcome iconoclast harpsichordist Mahan Esfahani, David Owen Norris playing the Mozart on the fortepiano once owned by Florence Nightingale, and the back-to-the-future trip of Will Gregory's glorious Moog Ensemble. Add to that a family show that combines SaintSaens and Tchaikovsky on two pianos with live illustration from children's author James Mayhew, and we hope this is a festival that you'll want to engage with time after time. Tord Gustavsen Trio

Mahan Esfahani Harpsichord Recital

Warning: seriously sublime music. Norway’s star pianist and composer Tord Gustavsen returns to St George’s with a new album and a new trio, with bassist Sigurd Hole joining regular drummer Jarle Vespestad. The forthcoming release in his evolving career with ECM Records – a series which must count as one of the greatest jazz sequences of our age – represents a further refinement of Gustavsen’s ‘Nordic blues’, with new compositions referencing both ancient Nordic hymn-melodies and the works of JS Bach.

‘Nothing less than magical’ D OW N B E AT

Attending a recital by Iranian-American harpsichordist Mahan Esfahani is to witness something dazzling and impressive; something that never fails to absorb not only in the performances themselves, but for the wit and lightly-worn erudition of Esfahani’s impromptu interactions with the audience. After two hours in his company, your view of the harpsichord and its repertoire – old and new – will never be the same again.

But instead of a full orchestra, Clementi, Cramer and Hummel wrote for a quartet. On nineteenth-century instruments the results are both exciting and beautiful – the Broadwood instrument belonged to the family of Florence Nightingale. Rêverie The life and loves of Claude Debussy

Leeds International Piano Competition 2018 Winner Recital

Lucy Parham Piano Simon Russell Beale Narrator

The Leeds International Piano Competition has long been one of the world’s most celebrated music competitions, launching the careers of some of the greatest pianists of our time, not least Radu Lupu and Murray Perahia. With pianist Paul Lewis performing on the closing night of our own new festival, and also having taken on the mantle of coArtistic Director and Chair of the 2018 Jury for the Leeds, we’re particularly pleased to announce this recital with the Winner of the 2018 competition. This is musical history in the making and a very special opportunity to witness one of the very first public recitals by the 19th Winner of this illustrious competition.

One of the most prolific and innovative composers of the early 20th century, Debussy absorbed and transformed cultural influences from countries as far apart as Scotland and the USA. The narrative of Rêverie follows him from his initial success with the Prix de Rome in 1885 to his untimely death in 1918. It is punctuated with solo piano works ranging from the ever-popular lyricism of Clair de Lune, Rêverie and The Girl with the Flaxen Hair to such virtuosic showpieces as Jardins sous la Pluie, the Etudes and L’Isle Joyeuse. ‘One of the must see events on the musical calendar’

Tickets can be booked now and further details will be announced in September, hot off the press following the Final of the Leeds International Piano Competition on 14 & 15 September.

Brodsky Quartet In Time of War

Karen Tanaka  At the grave of Beethoven Schulhoff  String Quartet No 1 Shostakovich  String Quartet No 8 Brubeck Regret George Crumb  Black Angels The title for Haydn’s Missa in tempore belli (In Time of War) is the starting point for this programme created by the Brodskys especially for the 100th anniversary of the Armistice. The works they have chosen, however, are all powerful reflections on subsequent wars. 38

Karen Tanaka’s calm and touching At the grave of Beethoven, was composed during the Bosnian conflict. Irwin Schulhof died in a Nazi concentration camp, but not before writing some of that time’s most exciting and original music. Shostakovich’s bleakly powerful 8th Quartet carries the inscription ‘For the victims of Fascism and War’ and was a response to the devastation caused by Allied bombing of Dresden. Dave Brubeck’s Regret was his response to the 9/11 attack; and George Crumb’s remarkable Black Angels, signed off ominously on Friday 13th 1970, was a daringly original critique of the Vietnam War. There is nothing else like it in the string quartet literature: a piece – with its eerie, amplified effects and bowed, tuned wind glasses – that the Brodskys reckon to be ‘surely one of the stand-out quartets of all time’.

Olivier Messiaen composed his transcendental visions for clarinet, piano, violin and piano while interned in the POW camp Stalag VIII-A at Görlitz. Woman to Woman sees a unique and timeless collaboration between three of the UK’s most celebrated female singersongwriters. Judie Tzuke, Beverley Craven and Julia Fordham will be taking to the stage together performing their classic hit singles and album tracks alongside their sensational five-piece band. It was 1973 when Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford first formed Squeeze, the band that would see them dubbed ‘The New Lennon and McCartney’. Glenn Tilbrook’s solo shows have continued to rise in popularity due to his combination of a consummately professional, yet distinctly personal performance, the familiarity of those wonderful Squeeze songs, and the occasional spontaneous interpretation of a respected song by another artist.

We welcome back violinist Eloisa-Fleur Thom for Mendelssohn's effervescent and hugely popular Violin Concerto. She is sure to impress with both the stunning virtuosity and soaring lyricism of her playing, which are to be found in abundance in this magnificent work. From the astonishing opening of Mahler's 1st Symphony (marked to be played 'like a sound of nature'), through the funeral march based on 'Frère Jacques' to the joyous finale, this symphony (one that changed the genre forever) displays Mahler at his youthful and exuberant best. bristolconcertorchestra.org.uk @bris_conc_orch 49

From the unbounded joy of the opening chorus, Jauchzet, Frohlocket (Celebrate, Rejoice) to the concluding movements marking the adoration of the Magi, Bach’s Christmas Oratorio is a festive treat. Vigorous, uplifting choruses contrast with hugely expressive solos and duets, and orchestral colours range from blazing trumpets and drums to the mellow, pastoral depiction of shepherds at the cradle. It is, quite simply, some of Bach’s most attractively varied music, and a magnificent counter-balance to Handel’s Messiah at this time of year. It is a pleasure to welcome the full forces of OAE – this world-renowned group so long associated with St George’s – for this significant seasonal event.
