FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S

DESK John P. Lorenzetti

On Saturday, June 10, 2017, St. Edmund Prep students joined the proud ranks of St. Edmund alumni. Armed with some 25 million dollars in scholarship money and acceptances to some of our nation’s top colleges and universities, they are poised to take their place in society – ready to make their piece of the world a better place. The graduation ceremonies capped yet another very good year in the continued growth of St. Edmund. Our academic program continues to grow most notably with our application to expand into the Middle Years Programme of the International Baccalaureate Program. Our sports program saw the girls’ lacrosse team go deep into the playoff s in only its second year of existence while the crew team competed successfully against established programs. We now have a full-time chaplain assigned to us, and we continue to expand our faith-inaction programs. As I write to you for the last time as principal of St. Edmund, I am fi lled with warm and happy memories. As you may know, I began my teaching career at St. Edmund High School as a wide-eyed young man. The lessons I learned from the Dominican Sisters helped me hone my skills and philosophy as an educator and the Dominican

motto of Caritas has been at the center of all that is St. Edmund ever since. I am most blessed and truly humbled to be part of the team for the past 22 years that has continued the work of the Dominican Sisters, begun some 84 years ago. To all with whom I have interacted – students, parents, alumni and friends of St. Edmund, I express my deepest gratitude, for without you, St. Edmund would not be where it is today. As Allison McGinnis and her new administrative team prepares to take the helm, I am excited beyond what mere words can express for the future of St. Edmund. Allison is blessed with a keen intellect, a passion for Catholic education, a fi erce love of St. Edmund and a beautiful vision for its future. With your prayers and support, St. Edmund will continue to grow and fl ourish, providing new generations of students the fi nest education steeped in the Gospel values and the Dominican tradition of Caritas. Thank you for making the past 22 years the happiest and most rewarding of my life. May God bless each and every one of you.

ROBOTICS HOSTS BOY SCOUTS

HARTE IS A DEAN’S LIST FINALIST

The SEP Robotics Team (FTC Team 6496) volunteered at the Brooklyn Council Merit Badge Expo held on Saturday, February 25th. The team donated the use of their equipment and spent the day helping Boy Scouts build and program their robots in order to earn partial and full Robotics Merit Badges.

Bridget Harte ‘18, recently advanced to the Finalist level for the FIRST Dean’s List Award. This prestigious award recognizes robotics students according to standards similar to that of the National Merit Scholarship, along with the many qualities reinforced by FIRST, such as “gracious professionalism.” Bridget is one of three NYC students to advance to this level based on her academics, leadership qualities, and technical expertise. We wish her and all the finalists the best of luck in the final level of this award.

On May 20th the team hosted a free event at SEP, offering a workshop for Boy Scouts who were working to complete their robotics merit badges. Learn more about our robotics program and follow the team on Instagram: @bota.bing.bota.bot

BLOOD DONORS SAVE LIVES

Inspired by our Hamilton ticket raffle last year, Mario Hevia ‘20 saw a way to support the Sean Casey Animal Rescue (SCAR), a no-kill animal shelter based in Windsor Terrace. He spent some of his winter snow shoveling money to purchase two tickets to WWE’s Summer Slam at Barclay Center. He donated the tickets to SCAR to be raffled off. Mario’s hope is the Summer Slam Raffle will generate much needed funds to help SCAR’s Critical Care Program. Well done, Mario! Information about Summer Slam raffle tickets can be found at nyanimalrescue.org.

At the Spring Blood Drive held on April 26th the New York Blood Center collected 171 units of blood and red cells, bringing the total number of units collected for the school year to 339 units. This will help over 1000 patients in the Greater New York area. SEP was the high school with the most donations in the Brooklyn Diocese. School nurse and coordinator of the blood drives, Kathy DeMello, RN is very proud of the students, faculty and staff who donated and helped with the blood drives. “The students understand the importance of donating and I am proud of all those who were willing to donate blood and their time to make each drive successful.”

PROJECT 2474 UPDATE Swing by Ocean Avenue and take a peek at some of the enhancements made possible by your contributions to Project 2474. Due to the generosity of our wonderful donors, we have been able to complete a number of sorelyneeded projects. First and foremost, you will immediately notice the refurbished façade. Gone is the blue marble tile which had begun to chip, and in its place is a bronzed glaze which brings a clean, uniform look to our entranceway and complements the brown bricks of the new wing. Our trademark cross has been completely rewired with LED cost-effi cient lighting and now serves as a beacon on Ocean Avenue from sunset to sunrise. It is a beautiful sight to behold and an icon of our Catholic identity. The front doors have been replaced and off er a clean modern look, complete with enhanced security features. Perhaps the most highly anticipated improvement was made to the basement level bathrooms. These used most frequently by students and visitors. Gone are the original pink tiles and stock fi xtures, replaced by shiny tiles, stalls and energy-effi cient accessories. The men’s room has been expanded to reach parity with facilities we have available for women. There is a new faculty bathroom as well. Finishing touches are being added to the fourth  oor technology suite and many faculty members and student clubs have taken advantage of the seminar room. The renovated student computer lab is also in its fi nal stages of renovation having just been rewired for data and electric, received a coat of paint, new lighting, carpet, furniture, and 32 Lenovo workstations. If you would like to visit the facilities, please contact the development team at (718) 743-6100 ext. 5081 and we would be happy to show you the improvements fi rsthand.

The campaign to raise the funds for these important improvements is ongoing and we encourage those of you who have not yet made a commitment to please do so. You can make a one-time gift or pledge payments over time. No gift is too small. Each gift makes a diff erence!

1970 Canterburian

The end of an era has arrived at 2474 Ocean Avenue as John P. Lorenzetti, the tenth principal of St. Edmund Preparatory High School, announced his retirement this past March. As his tenure of twentytwo years as principal (and an additional seven years as a teacher) draws to a close, Mr. Lorenzetti is confident in the future of St. Edmund as he hands the reins over to Allison Mcginnis, the Assistant Principal for Academic Affairs. While Mr. Lorenzetti will certainly miss the St. Edmund Prep family and the fresh feelings of a new school year, he is confident that the time is right to wrap up his forty-eight year career as an educator, confident in the knowledge that St. Edmund’s future is bright. So where did this ministry of education begin? It is difficult to say but as John reflects on his past, he sees the religious in his life as paramount in guiding him to this most important vocation. The eldest child of Alexander and Louise Lorenzetti, John spent a great deal of time volunteering at his parish of St. Rose of Lima (Parkville). The parish priests and his uncle Fr. Joseph Lorenzetti, not only influenced his faith formation but also exposed him to the vast cultural treasures of our great city. Puttering in the church, working in the rectory, serving as an altar server and sacristan influenced John’s decision to attend Cathedral Preparatory High School with the thought that he too might follow in his uncle’s footsteps.

Retires as Principal While studying there, he soon realized the priesthood was not his calling. Inspired by the Jesuit teaching tradition, John enrolled at Fordham University majoring in English and minoring in History and the Classics. He was the first in his family to graduate college and again it was a parish priest who called his attention to an opening at St. Edmund High School. Sr. Mary Arthur, OP was looking for both an English and Religion teacher which fit nicely with John’s experience. So it was at the ripe old age of twenty-one that John walked through the doors on Ocean Avenue, never realizing that this would be the first of thousands of threshold crossings he would make over the twenty-nine collective years he spent here. He was the new young teacher whose enthusiasm and energy quickly made its mark. He moderated the Student Council, instituted a peer counseling program, and most notably, reinvented the theatre club. It was in this capacity that he and his partner in crime, Joan gargiulio staged huge theatrical productions, engaging anywhere from 100 to 125 students in six sold out performances over two weekends. Recruiting males from other Catholic high schools, the group became a family, spending weekends building sets, making costumes, rehearsing lines. The tradition of the weekend Theatre party began with a simple pasta

dinner made and served in the old Home Economics room. John could be found stirring a big pot of pasta and sauce or tossing a salad. Whether rehearsing for Fiddler on the Roof, Flower Drum Song, Brigadoon or Sound of Music, the weekend theatre party became a staple of the St. Edmund Theatre Company, and a treasured memory for hundreds of young women. He describes his first year of teaching as “magical” even though most of his classes numbered over fifty students and his nerves compelled him to tape daily lesson plans to the desk so he would not miss a step or key point. The St. Edmund faculty took him under his wing and in particular, the wonderful Dominican Sisters of Sparkill. These good sisters truly lived their motto of Caritas and served as the very best examples of teaching. John is forever grateful for all he learned from them doing his best to fashion his teaching style after theirs, understanding that the individual student is far more important than the subject at hand. Seven years later, he was approached by Brother Cyril grogan, CFX to join the team at Nazareth which had recently gone co-ed. They were looking for educators who had experience teaching young women in order to facilitate a smooth transition. It was an opportunity to broaden his horizons and try a larger school. While there he quickly moved up

the ranks, joining the administrative team as Assistant Principal and then Deputy Principal over the span of eighteen years. Fast forward to 1994. Msgr. Thomas F. Noonan has announced that St. Edmund will become co-educational, renamed St. Edmund Preparatory High School and will seek new leadership to begin a new era in St. Edmund’s history. It was John’s brother Peter, a St. Edmund parishioner, who delivered Msgr. Noonan’s message, “Where is your application?” John ignored the request at first but after interviewing with the Search Committee, it was Monsignor Noonan who convinced him to return “home” and join the St. Edmund team. Arriving in the fall of 1995, John Lorenzetti faced a daunting task. Enrollment had hit an all-time low and was a constant concern for the school’s viability; the school’s culture needed to change from an all-girls school to a co-ed institution; and the academic expectations needed to be raised, and quickly, in order to survive. The first of many changes would begin with his tenure: the passing grade was raised to a 70, structure was added to the curriculum and credits needed to graduate were increased, AP classes were introduced, and new programs were added to the extracurricular and co-curricular activities. A major change was the establishment of a

Board of Trustees to ensure stability and a governance structure – gone were the days of schools run by parish priests. The successes over time are almost too many to mention. Enrollment rose to 750 students; all students sought a Regents diploma and a full slate of AP classes as well as a partnership with St. John’s University allowed students to pursue college credit; a music program was instituted and embedded in the curriculum; faculty committees were established and an academic council was introduced to gain their input. Most importantly, he and Fr. Joseph Fonti, the school’s chaplain, instituted class retreats, afternoon reflections and eventually day-long retreats to ensure that all of what we do, be informed by our faith. The Emmaus retreat program was a natural next step for our students and soon became a life-changing SEP experience for many. As these improvements became part of the school’s everyday life, the administrative team began to investigate the idea of incorporating the International Baccalaureate Programme into our school offerings, a comprehensive and balanced 2-year college-preparatory curriculum which requires students to study across all disciplines. The curriculum is designed for the highly motivated student who can meet the challenges of this rigorous program,

recognized by university admissions officers across the globe. The idea was embraced by John and the faculty. It led to a number of important building improvements including the renovation of the science labs to align with the needs of IB Programme and the addition of a new wing, expanding the school’s footprint and providing a home for the sequential art program, the band program and a college level library. These actions and programs, to name a few, have established St. Edmund as an educational innovator in the metropolitan area. So what will he miss most? The day-to-day interaction with students. John Lorenzetti has taught every year of his career with the exception of two, and witnessing the growth of students as they walk in the door as meek freshman and develop into confident, serious-minded Seniors is the pinnacle of satisfaction. To think he might have contributed just one small iota to the individual student’s growth is so rewarding. The most frequently attributed quote to John Lorenzetti is “The Street Stops at the Door.” This has been his welcoming exhortation at every Freshman orientation for decades. It was his way of saying leave the culture of the street outside, leave your troubles at the door. Come into a safe harbor where you will be nurtured and your

talents allowed to shine. Be a part of the St. Edmund Prep family. Perhaps one of the most remembered habits of John Lorenzetti is the action of twirling his keys. As he states it, there is an intention, a wisdom of twirling keys. “You can either surprise students and teachers alike, or you can give them a warning that you are coming. What type of administrator do you want to be? The principal who “catches” them in the act or the administrator who allows the individual conscience to act accordingly?” It is no surprise that John Lorenzetti, a compassionate man of second chances, would allow all of us the opportunity to straighten our course and make the right decision – if only because the “principal is coming!” So in a short time, September will arrive, the fresh faces of students will cross our threshold, and a new day will begin for St. Edmund Preparatory High School. Yet all of us who had the privilege of being part of his St. Edmund Prep family will fondly miss the familiar ring of twirling keys in the halls of St. Edmund Prep and the man who kept the street at bay for the last 22 years. godspeed John Lorenzetti. St. Edmund Prep is forever in your debt.

SEP ALUMNA ENDS BOARD TERM

BALLET THEATER PARTNERSHIP

Lisa Mammone-Rossi ‘82 has completed a five-year term as a mermber of the SEP Board of Trustees. During her tenure, Ms. Rossi has offered wise counsel, grappling with the important issues facing St. Edmund in the competitive market of Catholic education. She is firmly rooted in the belief that her St. Edmund Education encouraged her to dream big and set high goals for herself, strengthened with the knowledge that St. Edmund had prepared her to take on and conquer all of life’s challenges. Rossi graduated from St. John’s University Law School after receiving her B. A. in English in 1986. She is a past president of the Nassau Suffolk Trial Lawyers Bar Association and a member of the Columbian Lawyers Bar Association as well as a member of the National Ethics Committee for Liberty Mutual Insurance Company. She is currently a Senior Trial Counsel at Martyn, Toher & Martyn. Her down-to-earth advice and legal expertise will be sorely missed. We wish her and her family well.

St. Edmund Prep and Covenant Ballet Theater of Brooklyn have created a wonderful and unique partnership. Through an audition process, students from St. Edmund who are interested in dance are selected to participate in a 10-12 week dance residency with professionals from Covenant Ballet Theater. This collaboration allows St. Edmund students to rehearse and perform alongside professional dancers culminating in a dance concert held at Kingsborough Community College. This additional training has elevated the students’ skills and in turn the St. Edmund Prep Dance Program. Many audience members commented on the quality of the performance at the spring concert. Bravo to all our dancers!

MUSIC TAKES FABRIZIO GLOBAL

NEW CHAPLAIN APPOINTED

John Fabrizio ‘18 was accepted into several prestigious music programs this past spring. John performed with the InterSchool Orchestras Symphony and the Canadian Brass at Carnegie Hall in May. In July, John had the unique opportunity to travel with the New Jersey Youth Symphony to the renowned Musikverein in Vienna where they played in the Summa Cum Laude International Youth Festival. Following the festival in Vienna, John and the rest of the symphony headed to Budapest where they will played at the Bela Bartok Hall. Congratulations John!

This past February, St. Edmund Prep welcomed our new chaplain Fr. Michael Gribbon. Fr. Gribbon currently serves as parochial vicar at Resurrection Parish in Gerritsen Beach. He comes to us with a long history of service as a high school chaplain having served at both Nazareth and Xaverian High Schools. His previous pastoral assignments include pastor of St. Therese of Lisieux, East Flatbush and parochial vicar at Blessed Trinity, Breezy Point. Since his appointment to St. Edmund Prep, Fr. Gribbon has been an active part of daily life at the Prep including offering morning mass, visiting classrooms and hearing confessions. We look forward to his pastoral presence among us in the years to come!

We at St. Edmund have been working very hard to figure out the best way to educate our students, and we have found that the methods employed by the International Baccalaureate work. The proof is in the results of our Diploma students. Because of this, we have decided to become an IB Middle Years Programme candidate school. The Middle Years Programme, or MYP, is a program for ALL ninth and tenth grade students. It is a fully inclusive program that is geared for all learning levels. By doing this, we are hoping that we can instill a love of learning earlier in their high school careers. The MYP approach is a thematic and student-centered method of teaching and learning. Students will still be following the New York State curriculum and will still be taking Regents exams. This is mostly a shift in how teachers present the topic of study.

Why the shift? We live in a global society where information is almost always at our fingertips. Facts are easy to come by. Because of that, we have found that it is more important to focus on critical thinking, writing, analytical, and organizational skills. By embracing this philosophy, we are finally answering the age -old student question of, “What’s the point of this?” The point is to expose our students to different ideas and different ways of thinking, so that when they leave us, they are actually better prepared, not just for college, but for life. We will be applying for MYP authorization and doing a trial implementation in the 2017-2018 school year. This means that the Classes of 2020 and 2021 will be fully entrenched in this educational model, with the Class of 2021 being the first to complete the Service and Personal Project components. All of this will be fully introduced to our freshmen during their orientation. If you have any questions about the Middle Years Programme or Diploma Programme at St. Edmund Prep, please feel free to contact our IB Coordinator, Mrs. Kate Jones at kjones@stedmundprep.org

NEW ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL ROLES As St. Edmund Prep welcomes a new administration this September, two members of our faculty will assume new roles. Mr. Kevin Raphael, who has served as Assistant Principal for Student Aff airs since 2008 will transition into the Assistant Principal for Institutional Advancement. In his new position, Mr. Raphael will oversee St. Edmund Prep’s development, alumni relations, and physical plant management eff orts. Mr. Raphael joined the Prep in 2004 as a member of the Math Department. Ms. Peggy McEvoy will assume the role of Assistant Principal for Student Aff airs. Ms. McEvoy has taught at the Prep since 2006. She served as a member of the English Department, serving as department coordinator for the past six years. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Ms. McEvoy has moderated the theatre program, SEP News, and the yearbook. We wish Mr. Raphael and Ms. McEvoy well in their new roles at the Prep.

DEPETRO WRITES FINAL CHAPTER AT SEP As we say good-bye to the 2016-2017 school year we also bid farewell to Mrs. Joan DePetro as she retires from her thirty-three year teaching career. Mrs. DePetro completed her BA at Hunter College and her MSEd at Fordham University. She joined the faculty at Our Lady of Grace School in 1984 teaching language arts to 5th through 8th Grade. She was the chairperson of english department and the Middle States accredidation committee. She also moderated the yearbook. She joined the faculty at SEP in 1998 and has been a mainstay of the English department for the past ninteen years. During her time at the Prep she moderated the student newspaper and traveled abroad with our students. Her students often remarked about Mrs. DePetro’s love of poetry and literature, and her desire to share that deep love with her students. Many students credit their experience in Mrs. DePetro’s class for making them better writers and better critics of the written word. St. Edmund Prep sends Mrs. DePetro off to write the next chapter of her life with our prayers, best wishes and deep gratitude.

CHARITY ON THE COURT AND IN THE FIELD In addition to their athletic and academic success, the Eagles are very involved in the school’s effort to live the Gospel values by putting our faith in action. On Oct. 14, our Volleyball teams hosted two “Dig Pink” games in support of The Side Out Foundation for breast cancer research, as well as a student-faculty volleyball game on October 20th. All game admission, raffles and concession sales from both events were donated to The Side Out Foundation, totaling over $2,200. These successful events were spearheaded by the dynamic and dedicated leadership of Stephanie Cacace ’18 who was recognized as an Ambassador and was awarded one of four national scholarships based on her outstanding coordination of the SEP Dig Pink events. Earlier in the month, the Girls’ Soccer team ran a “Kick Out Breast Cancer” fundraiser in support of the Susan G. Komen Foundation. The Cheerleaders and Step team took part in the Prospect Park Breast Cancer Walk. The softball program joined with other Catholic high schools to support Autism Speaks. Over 180 student-athletes participated in the school’s Street Corner Gourmet Program this past Thanksgiving. Ten student-athletes were part of the Emmaus Team, leading their peers on retreats throughout the year. Special events such as the Joe Romano Memorial Three-On-Three Tournament, EagleFest, and the Senior-Faculty Basketball and Volleyball Games all helped to increase school spirit and provided another avenue for members of the SEP family to showcase their Eagle Pride.

FIVE EAGLES MAKE MAYOR’S CUP The NYC Mayor’s Cup is a series of ten sporting events that determines the “Best in the City”. Student-athletes of all ages and from across all five boroughs compete year-round to prove they’re New York City’s best at baseball, lacrosse, track & field, wrestling, chess, soccer, softball, cricket, cross country and basketball. This year five SEP student athletes were selected to compete in the Mayor’s Cup:

YOUNG MEN AND WOMEN READY TO CHANGE THE WORLD

“While it is important to think about the mysteries the future holds, they are just that: mysteries. We must not fail to live in the moment and appreciate what life off ers us as it happens. Therefore, while looking forward, as the cliché goes, we should remember to stop and smell the roses, and always remember the saying by St. Edmund of Canterbury which we were so often reminded of each day we walked into school or passed through the lobby, to “work as though you would live forever but live as though you would die today”. After developing our faith over the past years, we should trust in God to lead us to where we will be our happiest, and understand that while we may feel that our future plans change often, God has plans for us.” Marissa Moran - Valedictorian, Class of 2017 Attending Fordham Universty

“Through my St. Edmund family, I have become the person I am today; willing to help anyone facing their diffi culties. That is what St. Edmund has taught us, and who St. Edmund has made us. The growth we have undergone as individuals extends beyond the relationships between each of us. It applies to all of the relationships we will have throughout our lives. Thanks to the way St. Edmund has raised us, we will continue to go forth and do service unto others.” Edward Carr - Salutatorian, Class of 2017 Attending Harvard University

ALUMNI/FRIENDs

GIVE BACK LORRAINE BUCKLEY SCHOLARSHIP Anthony Pasquarella of Our Lady of Grace was selected to receive the Lorraine Buckley Scholarship. Mrs. Buckley was a long-standing member of the faculty at Our Lady of Grace. Unfortunately, Mrs. Buckley was diagnosed with cancer and succumbed to the disease at an early age. Mr. Charles Buckley (pictured right) decided to honor his wife’s memory by establishing a scholarship in her name here at St. Edmund Prep, the school where their son Gerard served as a teacher and administrator for many years. The stipulation of the scholarship is that it be awarded to an Our Lady of Grace student with a strong work ethic who plans to attend St. Edmund Preparatory High School in the Fall.

SR. MARY PETER AWARD Jared Rios ‘18 is the recipient of the the Sr. Mary Peter Award. Jared recently attended the National American Legion Oratorical Competition where for the past three years he has excelled. He is a leading member of our Model Congress team, the National Honor Society, captain of the track team, Emmaus retreat participant, and SEP ambassador. The Sr. Mary Peter Award was established by the Class of 1966 to honor their favorite teacher Sr. Mary Peter. Thank you Class of ’66 for your continued support of St. Edmund!

MICHAEL GORDON SCHOLARS The Michael Gordon Foundation generously donated $24,000 in scholarships to St. Edmund Prep. The foundation provides financial assistance to New York City Catholic high school students as they pursue their education. The following students were named Michael Gordon Scholars: Juan Carpio ‘18, Joshua Carson ‘17, Kevin Dellosso ‘18, Robert DiSarno-Nolan ‘17, Dominique Friscia ‘17, Isabella Gmelch ‘18, Brian Jean ‘19, Conor Leon ‘18, Johnny Recio ‘17, Juan Recio ‘19 , Quinn Tramontano ‘18, Jordan Williams ‘17.

MCMAHON SCHOLARSHIPS Mr. William McMahon continues to be a gracious benefactor to the Prep. Since 2006, Mr. McMahon has awarded three $1000 scholarships in memory of his daughter Patricia who attended St. Edmund High School and was tragically killed in a car accident during her sophomore year. Bridget Harte ’18 (left) and Robert Dellosso ’18 (not pictured) were awarded the Patricia McMahon Scholarship for Excellence in Science; Elizabeth Shoykhet ‘18 (right) received the Patricia McMahon Scholarship for Excellence in Mathematics.

“The Cuba mission that embarked from St. Edmund Prep earlier this year was an experience I won’t forget or regret. It profoundly taught my classmates and me the realities of poverty, even in countries closer than you think, and the ability for normal people to help those in serious need.” Jack McCarthy ‘17

“Our mission to Cuba is a perfect example of opportunities available at St. Edmund. Not only were we able to build the Hunger Awareness Challenge and fundraise, but we were able to put the money into action in the most direct way, seeing the eff ects of our eff orts.“ Gerard Rehill ‘17

“Our mission trip to Cuba was an eye-opening experience. Having the opportunity to go to Cuba and help change lives and bridge the connection between Cuba and the US was an amazing experience that I would love to do again. It helped me realize how much you can change the lives of others. As someone who comes from a family from a country that is struggling, this trip was important for me to participate in. I hope to participate in another mission trip and help others elsewhere as well.” Melissa Nereus ‘17

Twenty alumni, parents and friends participated in what has become an annual tradition here at the Prep – Career Day! Each year on a March morning, students choose three career day presentations to attend. The day is designed to explore areas of interest and learn a bit more about how to prepare now for what they hope to pursue in the future. The students truly enjoy the opportunity to ask questions in a friendly environment and we often find that students will then pursue research of their own in order to better prepare for a specific course of study. Sometimes these presentations affirm what students would like to study, other times they realize a specific field may not be all they bargained for! Either way, all agree that the experience is rich and rewarding.

PARENT VOLUNTEER COMMITTEE St. Edmund Prep Wants You! The SEP Parent Volunteer Committee is growing in leaps and bounds‌why not consider joining your fellow parents in raising much-needed funds for our students? The PVC is a group of parents who support the fundraising efforts of the Development Team. As it takes on more responsibility, we would love to recruit new parents join us. The Parent Volunteer Committee is charged with running events which will build community and support the operational fundraising needed on a yearly basis. We are looking for individuals to play a variety of roles. Perhaps you are able to chair an event? Maybe you can use your network to seek donations and sponsorships? Each event requires individuals who can help with registration, canvass stores and seek donations, prepare gift baskets, serve on food and beverage committees as well as decorating and set-up. So even if you cannot attend every meeting, we are able to find a way for each individual to contribute. We are always looking for new ideas to raise the sorely needed funds to keep St. Edmund competitive and offer the best education possible. Activities have included: Golf and Tennis Outing, Radio Bingo, Paint Nite, Mother’s Day Pasta Night, the SEP Supper Club, the Christmas Wreath Drive, and the Tuition Raffle. We hope you will join this vital group. Mark your calendars for the first meeting of the year, Thursday, September 21st.

ADMISSIONS

UPDATE

A top priority of the Admissions Office this year was to elevate the presence of St. Edmund Preparatory High School throughout the Brooklyn-Queens Diocese. To achieve this goal, the Admissions Office expanded many of its pre-existing programs in order to reach a greater number of seventh and eighth grade students in both public and private schools. Representatives from St. Edmund Preparatory High School were able to connect with sixteen different schools throughout Brooklyn and Queens, a significant increase from previous years. Additionally, the Buddy Day Program continues to grow and thrive at St. Edmund Prep. Seventh and eighth grade students are invited to spend a day with an SEP student and follow that student throughout his or her day’s schedule. Buddy Days serve as an excellent first impression for boys and girls eager to be part of a family-oriented school community that puts the students at the center of learning. Traditionally, the Buddy Day Program begins in the fall and winds down in early spring, St. Edmund Prep continued to host potential students up until the end of May. St. Edmund Prep was also thrilled to host three outstanding groups of seventh graders from our local area, perhaps one of the proudest achievements of the Admissions Office this year. Throughout the month of May, boys and girls from St. Bernard Catholic Academy, Our Lady of Grace Catholic Academy, and St. Edmund Elementary School spent an entire day with their classmates learning more about the high school experience St. Edmund Prep has to offer. During their visit, these seventh graders were able to meet current students and teachers, sit-in on classes, and walk the halls of St. Edmund Prep as one of our students, all of which is designed to provide them with a “sneak preview” of high school. Additionally, the boys and girls from these local schools engaged with the Guidance Department to focus on long-term college and career goals, learned programming and design from the school’s Robotics Team, and witnessed the creative talents of our various school band ensembles under the direction of Mr. Joe Gucciardi. The Office of Admissions cannot wait to continue expanding these worthwhile programs into the 2017-2018 academic year and cannot wait to welcome these new Eagles into our family.
