WELCOME

From the Principal’s Desk

Allison McGinnis As the school year came to an end I was reminded of one of the true blessings of being an educator; the ability to start over. There are very few professions in this world that allow you to literally start over again every twelve months. Of course many of the faces are the same, much of the curriculum goes unchanged and the classrooms are as we left them. However, there is something truly special in the power of the mental reset button. This gift to educators reminds me very much of the Walk to Emmaus. A walk that encourages each and every one of us to rediscover Christ’s presence in our lives and to form relationships that encourage us to grow in our faith. Sometimes, we need to hit the reset button with our relationship with God. The mission of St. Edmund Prep, to instill the Gospel values in our students so as to empower them to become confident and selfdisciplined participants in the everchanging global society, is thriving. And as we closed out our school year I am so proud to say that our students this year had more opportunities than ever to hit the reset button

with their faith. To either grow their existing relationship with the Lord or simply reintroduce themselves. Giving students more opportunities to explore their faith has become a true priority as some of the most life altering experiences for a teenager happen outside of the traditional classroom. Allowing students the opportunity to explore and share their faith with others engenders a confidence that is awe-inspiring. A confidence that allows them to take on leadership experiences that truly change the trajectory of their lives. Whether it is leading students in prayer, participating in Midnight Runs, or being part of our Mission and Catholic Identity Committee, when a student feels a passion and connection in being a servant of the Lord, the doors open in a truly powerful way. Educating 21st century adolescents comes with challenges that are very new and unique to their generation. Being able to provide the unconditional love of the Lord in a world with many conditions is a true gift. The continued success of St. Edmund Prep is therefore of utmost importance as we continue to strive to provide our students with authentic opportunities to become uncommon leaders in a world that needs their gifts and talents. Therefore, as we slide into the fall and the beginning of a new school year, let us all remember that the growth of St. Edmund Prep is not only a growth to be recognized in the brick and mortar of the building as we continue to upgrade our facilities and enhance our curriculum but a growth that is sometimes intangible. A growth in our spiritual hearts and spiritual minds. May God continue to bless all of those who support the community of St. Edmund, past, present, and future.

Bye Bye Birdie Theater Club makes a strong showing on the SEP stage with production of the legendary musical. On Friday & Saturday, March 9-10, the SEP Theater Club wowed audiences with their performance of the muchloved musical “Bye Bye Birdie!”. The show featured an incredibly talented cast, including some students who were new to the SEP stage. Madison Ross ‘19, made her stage debut with an absolutely stunning portrayal of Rose Alvarez, and her rendition of “Spanish Rose” brought the audience to its feet. Michael Leahy ‘21, also made his stage debut with a portrayal of Albert Peterson that had the audience laughing, cheering, and really and truly “(Putting) on a Happy Face”. of Conrad Birdie, and AbbyGail Valcourt’s (‘19) uproariously funny take on Albert’s mother, Mae Peterson. In addition to the two weekend performances, the Theater Club treated local eighth graders to a sneak preview. Audiences who were lucky enough to be at the performances raved that it was the best show that the SEP Theater Club has treated them to yet; and the directors, Scott O’Donnell ‘06 & Peggy McEvoy, are excited about the talented young actors who will be leading the way in future performances, including some promising incoming freshman performers. Mark your calendars, the next spring musical goes up on March 27-28, 2020.

Eagles Shine at Oratorical Contest Each year, St. Edmund Prep enters students into the American Legion Oratorical Speech Contest, a national contest, which strives to help high school students to increase both their knowledge and appreciation for the U.S. Constitution. The contest started back in 1938, and for the last 80 years has challenged young men and women to research the importance of our nation’s laws, and to speak eloquently and persuasively about our constitutional rights as well as our duties as American citizens. Students who participate are required to write and deliver an 8-10 minute oration on an aspect of the U.S. Constitution. The contest begins with a local round, and the winners go on to compete at District, Zone and State Levels. The State winner heads to Indianapolis to compete in the national competition. St. Edmund Prep has been participating in the contest for the last six years. This year, Emily Caccamo

‘21 and Jack Harkin ‘20 entered the contest for the first time, and both performed incredibly well. Harkin’s dynamic and informative speech about the importance of voting in midterm elections enabled him to win the local round in late December. Caccamo’s oration, a discussion of the responsibilities attached to our right to free speech, earned her third place in the local round, and then first place at the District round in January. Emily went on to compete at Zone, where she placed third. Both students performed remarkably well throughout the competition; Ms. McEvoy, their coach, has high hopes that next year one of the two will become the second of our students to qualify to compete in Albany for the New York state title. The school is extremely grateful to the American Legion for all that they do to support the education of our young Americans.

Multicultural Day Celebrates Diversity “It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences.”-Audre Lorde On April 3rd, a committee of students organized our first Multicultural Day in order to celebrate the diversity of our SEP Family. The day began with a school-wide assembly which highlighted the accomplishments of women from many different cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Students spoke about significant role models in their lives and in society. They also shared original poety and songs. During the lunch periods a multicultural bake sale was held to celebrate food and traditions from different countries. We are so proud of these leaders among our community who saw an opportunity to bring our school together in a spirit of celebration and education. We look forward to more of these student-centered initiatives in the coming school year. May we always work together as a SEP Family to learn about and to respect the variety of cultures and attitudes that make up the richness of our school community.

Latty was selected to the CHSAA AllLeague team for a third consecutive season and earned a spot on The Tablet First-Team All Star squad. Jordan Lauterborn ‘19 became the 8th female in school history to tally 1,000 points as her baseline jumper against St. Joseph’s floated through the net on Senior Night, February 15th. During the 2018-2019 school year, over 150 individual student-athletes were on the honor roll for at least one marking period. Student-athletes posted an overall cumulative GPA of 90.1 this year, making the balance between athletic success and academic excellence the norm at the Prep. As a way of recognizing these achievements in the classroom, all student-athletes on the honor roll were recognized at the Athletic Awards Dinner for each season. Additionally, the Athletic Directors’ Cup for Academic Excellence was awarded to the team with the highest GPA during their respective season of competition. In the fall, the Girls Varsity Volleyball team earned the cup by posting an academic average of 97.6. During the winter season, a GPA of 98.9 netted the honor for the Girls Varsity Basketball Team. The Junior Varsity Softball Team posted an average of 93.8 to win the award for the Spring season.

Parent Volunteer Committee

Our St. Edmund Prep Parent Volunteer Committee (PVC) had another banner year hosting several fundraising and community events to the benefit of our students at The Prep! The PVC is made up of a group of like-minded parents, grandparents and guardians of current students and alum that are willing to share their time, and their expertise, to help run different events at St. Edmund Prep. The PVC started the year by manning the grill at our opening liturgy and barbecue back in September. This was the second year in a row that we held the barbecue following our opening liturgy. It has turned out to be an incredible ice breaker for our freshman as well as a great way for our returning students to rekindle their friendships after the summer break. Next up were the two Open Houses that our school held for 7th and 8th grade students and families in October. Our parents mingled with grammar school parents, answered questions from a parent’s perspective, expanded on all of the great things that are happening at our school and helped sell gear from the Eagle’s Nest! In November the PVC hosted their first fundraiser of the year – Radio Bingo! Almost four hundred guests, including parents, alum, faculty, staff and friends of St. Edmund laughed and danced the night away trying to

fill out their “Radio Bingo” cards. An incredible night was had by all and just as importantly the event raised a significant amount of money for our students. They closed out the 2018 year by holding their annual Christmas Raffle and Christmas Wreath Sale. It was a festive way of celebrating the Christmas season as each day a different winner was pulled for the raffle and wreaths were hung which memorialized loved ones past and present. Not only was this a financial success, but the Christmas Wreaths also put our school in the Christmas spirit as 85 beautifully decorated wreaths adorned the front fencing. The 2019 year came in like a tiger as all hands were on deck preparing for the school’s Card Party which was held on February 1st. Countless hours were clocked by dozens of parents and staff to make the Card Party such a success. With over 400 guests and too many prizes to count, the Card Party has become one of the school’s largest fundraisers of the year, rivalling our Annual Golf & Tennis Outing! While the work for the Card Party was underway in January, the PVC showed their amazing ability and willingness to “multi-task”. They volunteered at our school’s Accepted Student Information and Registration Night and ran our Eagle’s Nest Pop-Up Stores at different school events and games selling Prep merchandise to parents, students, alum and friends. At the Accepted Student and Information Night our parents presence was invaluable as they provided honest, heartfelt answers to the parents of the accepted students, helped sell Eagle’s Nest gear and once again did whatever was needed as the night went along. The spring didn’t slow down the PVC as they helped run the 2nd Annual Eagle 5k barbecue and greeted our incoming families at our Incoming Freshman Brunch. During the Incoming Freshman Brunch our current PVC members were recruiting new parents to join up. Two of those parents brought new ideas to the table which will be implemented during the 2019-2020 school year: a Christmas Vendor Bazaar and a $10,000 raffle. The Parent Volunteer Committee is run through the school’s Development Office under the guidance of Mr. Michael Leahy and Director of Development Mrs. Joanne Blum. If you would like to join the PVC or have any questions regarding their mission please contact Mike Leahy (mleahy@stedmundprep.org).

Hockey Star

Former Eagle Drafted to USHL

St. Edmund hockey star John Lundy ‘19 may have graduated this past June, but his hockey career is really just getting ready to take flight. The Marine Park resident was selected in the second round of the United States Hockey League (USHL) Draft by the Tri-City Storm. The USHL is considered to be the top junior hockey league in North America, and it has led all other junior leagues around the world with regards to players drafted into the National Hockey League (NHL). The primary goal for most, if not all members of the USHL, is to garner a scholarship for a NCAA Division 1 school. Hockey players at this level regularly follow this endeavor by working towards playing professional hockey in the National Hockey League (the highest level), or elsewhere around the world. John is already half-way to reaching these goals. He has already signed a letter of commitment to play at The University of Massachusetts-Amherst, a Division 1

16

powerhouse that he will join when his tenure with The Storm is completed. John will leave Brooklyn this September and take up residence in the Midwest. The Tri-City Storm’s home is located in Kearney, Nebraska and represents the Tri-City area of Central Nebraska (Grand Island, Hastings and Kearney). In 2019, The Storm captured their second Anderson Cup Championship in it’s organization history by winning the USHL’s regular season title. Even more impressively, they also led all junior hockey clubs in the world by having five players selected into the 2019 NHL draft! John set the Catholic High School Hockey League (CHSHL) on fire while playing for St. Edmund Prep. He was consistently among the scoring leaders in the league. He was a four time League All Star (four times First Team) and was the first player in St. Edmund Prep history to amass over 100 varsity goals. John led the team to three CHSHL

City Championship semi-final appearances and was always a targeted opponent. Xavier Varsity Ice Hockey Head Coach Al DiMauro P’05 stated “Lundy is a fierce competitor who can impact the outcome of a game singlehandedly. We always shadowed him with two men every time he was in our zone. Strong player…stronger person”. When asked about his time at the Prep, John commented, “I’ll be forever grateful that I was able to spend four years at St. Edmund Prep. I want to thank Varsity Head Coach Mike Leahy P’21, ’23, Asst. Coaches Carney P’14, Matt Schmalix ’11 and Frank Grisanzio ’09 for their guidance. Most importantly, I want to thank my teammates for making these past four years so memorable!” Number 86 was a sight to behold on the ice and everyone at the Prep is wishing nothing but the best as his hockey quest continues.

Road to the PGA Golf Stand-Out Thrives at Campbell

William Dantone ’16 is continuing right where he left off when he graduated the Prep! Will was a standout on the SEP Golf Team and was one of the most accomplished golfers in the Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) during his high school career. His tenure at the Prep was highlighted in his final match as he won the New York City Mayor’s Cup Golf Championship in 2016. The Mayor’s Cup features the best NYC golfers from the CHSAA, the Public School Athletic Association (PSAL) and Private Independent Schools. The Cup was played at the prestigious Trump Links Golf Course in the Bronx. Will eagled the 17th hole at Trump Links to secure a two stroke victory over the field. Since graduating, Will has continued his golf career at Campbell University. Campbell is a private Division One university located in Buies Creek, North Carolina. He was drawn to Campbell by their PGA Golf Management Program. Campbell’s program is one of only

eighteen to be sanctioned by the Professional Golf Association (PGA) and is considered by most to be one of the finest in the country. The program is administered by Campbell University’s School of Business and will enable Will to graduate with a BS in Business as well as becoming a Class A Professional for the PGA of America. As a participant in the PGA Golf Management Program students are offered the opportunity to intern at different golf courses around the country. Will has had the good fortune of being placed at some of the most prestigious golf clubs in the United States. After his freshman year Will accepted a position at The Upper Montclair Country Club in Clifton, NJ. The following year he landed at the world renowned Liberty National Golf Club (host of 2017 President’s Cup). This year he is traveling out to Jackson Hole, WY to work at The Shooting Star Golf Club. Will shared that his education at the Prep

thoroughly prepared him for college life at Campbell. He was amazed that many of his college professors teach in the same manner that his teachers back on Ocean Avenue do! He credits the Prep Golf Team for allowing him to nurture his golf game and attributes his development and preparedness for college in part to the Emmaus Retreat and Summer Outreach programs. His college life during the week has him going to class in the mornings and practicing and playing golf in the afternoons. The weekends mostly consist of playing tournaments, getting homework done and “some chill time” with his friends. Will admittedly holds himself to a very high standard and he hopes to continue to improve his game eventually playing on the PGA Tour. He stated “I know I have a very long road ahead of me but I am looking forward to every step”. With the work ethic that Will possesses, everybody at the Prep knows that he will be a success in whatever he chooses.

30 Under 30 Honorees pictured with members of the SEP Administration during the ceremony held on February 8th.

The St. Edmund Prep young alum family gathered together this past November for the inaugural 30 Under 30. Our thirty came from near and far to meet that night at Rare Rooftop Bar in Chelsea. Just as any family comes back together after a little time away, we embraced, told both old and new stories, laughed as only we can do, and ultimately honored our incredible nominees. These uncommon leaders were nominated by their peers, along with many other amazing candidates, and were subsequently selected by a committee to be one of the thirty for this first time event. The focus was to accentuate their extraordinary accomplishments, as well as give a brief snapshot into what these thirty young men and women are currently doing in their respective fields. Whether it is finance, public service, marketing, civil service, teaching, or the health field, our thirty have reminded everyone that through bold learning, the graduates of St. Edmund Prep continue to go into today’s ever-changing global society as confident as ever. They are empowered to make a difference in the way that they see fit through the values that they took with them as eagles. We are so proud of you and all of our alumni, who continue to strive for excellence in that in which you do.

McDade-Murdoch Scholarship

The Nancy McDade Murdoch ‘74 and Thomas Murdoch Scholarship was presented for the first time at the Athletic Hall of Fame ceremony on April 5th. Nancy McDade was a gifted student and talented athlete. Along with her sister, Janet ‘75 and the entire McDade clan, Nancy had a passion for basketball. Nancy graduated from St. Edmund in 1974 and went on to a distinguished career as a nurse, showing great compassion to all of her patients. Nancy and her husband Thomas, himself a basketball enthusiast, sent their son Danny to St. Edmund Prep. Tom continued to exhibit his love of basketball by

serving as a coach for the Eagles Freshmen team in the mid-2000s. St. Edmund Prep is grateful to the McDade and Murdoch families who have chosen to memorialize Nancy and Tom with a scholarship in their honor. The Nancy McDade Murdoch ‘74 and Thomas Murdoch Scholarship will be awarded each year to a junior student-athlete who has expressed an interest in pursuing a career in the medical field. This year, the recipient was David Kingsley ’20, a junior member of our Track program who is also a full IBDiploma student at SEP.

Recent Alumni Share College Experience In January we welcomed back to the Prep eight recent Alumni to share their college experiences with our junior class. They visited classrooms and answered questions about college life, making the transition to college and what they might do differently if they could go back to their junior year. Thank you to (shown L to R) Samantha Arent ‘18 College of Mount St. Vincent, Christina Colasuonno ‘18 St. John’s University, Angelina Meringolo ‘18 Sacred Heart University, Janine Viti SEP Guidance Counselor, Brianna Demorcy ‘15 Emmanauel College, Alia Alawi ‘18 Long Island University, Gabrielle Bonello ‘18 Stonybrook University, Maria Trizzino ‘18 St. Joseph’s College (not pictured), and Bridget Harte ‘18 Stevens Institute of Technology (not pictured), for sharing their time with us!

Finding Common Ground Midnight Run: Forging a bond between housed and homeless

FEATURE

MAKING NEWS

“Work as though you will live forever, but live as though you would die today” - St. Edmund of Canterbury This quote of our beloved patron is the first thing that members of the SEP family see when they walk in the building at 2474 Ocean Avenue. What does it truly mean? Each year, students, faculty, and staff are called to live their lives in service of those in need, living out our motto of “Caritas” Christian love of humankind. Throughout the school year, St. Edmund Prep offers many different ways to live this calling. Whether participating in StreetCorner Gourmet, Summer Outreach in Philadelphia, the various drives run by Student Council, or the newly introduced Day of Service, we as a family live as men and women for others. Prep students do not serve because they are forced to serve; they serve because they want to serve. On our first Day of Service this year, over 100 students and faculty members came in to the building on their day off. They made sandwiches for Catholic Charities, recycled phones to be sent to third world countries that do not have modern technology. They also sorted clothing for future projects. Seeing these students give up a day off and serve with enthusiasm was truly a beautiful sight! Soon after this, Deacon Ron, our Director of Campus Ministry, put into motion the beginning steps of a longtime dream of his – a service project to feed the homeless on the streets of New York: Midnight Run. He joined forces with faculty member, Michael Panico, who attended two required training sessions at St. John’s University and Molloy College. Once training was completed, the Midnight Run, an organization that has been serving the homeless since the 1980’s, approved the Prep to join their network of volunteers. Midnight Run partners with different companies, schools, and groups of volunteers to provide food, clothing, and toiletries to the homeless on the streets of New York City. Altogether, the organization coordinates over one thousand relief missions every year. After years of collecting clothing and toiletries (and one large run to BJ’s), we had our first Midnight Run on February 8th. On that cold (yes, VERY cold) night, 30 students, faculty, and staff, embarked on our inaugural run. We served between thirty to forty people

that night, providing them with supplies on our three different stops in Manhattan. The human interaction with our students and adults was a gift. It truly was a great success! That success allowed us to schedule another run in April which happened to fall on Exploration Day. Exploration Day is an opportunity for our students, accompanied by faculty members, to explore the five boroughs, learning from the rich and diverse culture and history of our city. Yet that night, a group of fifteen students, tired from Exploration Day, STILL showed up for our service trip and traveled to Manhattan, braving another cold (and this time, rainy) night to walk with our brothers and sisters in need. But, a truly remarkable moment occurred before the run even started: Hannah Scott ‘19, the recipient of this year’s Eagle award, took charge of the entire preparation process on her own. She could have just sat back and done what was asked of her, but she took the lead running the sandwich station, and worked alongside her peers to make nearly seventy-five bagged meals to be given out later that night. She was joined by fellow seniors Kristen O’Regan ‘19, Isabella Niebel ‘19, Kaitlyn Ryan ‘19, and Kelsey Kane ‘19, five individuals who chose to spend their night off, making preparations and sending off the run team. They truly embodied the characteristics of servant leaders.

In a desire to grow our partnership, we staged our third and final run of the school year on Ascension Thursday. Yet again, another group of students chose to spend their afternoon and evening off to live out their lives as Jesus taught them: loving one another, and helping those in need. Despite another rain-filled night, we participated in another fulfilling experience. The Midnight Run program at St. Edmund Prep has grown from “Wait, do I actually have to run?” to “Wait, when can we “run” again?” Our students consistently demonstrate the qualities of an Eagle: brave, courageous, and determined to help those in need. Katie Hogg ‘20 and Jennifer O’Brien ’20 participated in all three runs, taking on leadership roles in the final trip. The final run in particular was a moving experience. Throughout the course of three relief missions, we have been assigned similar stops in Manhattan. On this May night, every location we visited was a stop we had manned on prior runs. Our students reconnected with individuals we had served before. It felt as if we were rekindling friendships and this time we listened to their stories and continued to walk alongside them in our journey with the Lord. St. Ignatius of Loyola would often call on those he came in contact with to “Go, set the world on fire.” Fire often destroys, but it can also purify and inspire, just as the tongues of

fire inspired and sanctified the Apostles on Pentecost. Each and every one of us is called upon to purify the world, and live our lives not only for others, but also with others; protecting the dignity of every human life. Our students, faculty, and staff do not just embody this in our service and partnership with Midnight Run, but we LIVE it every day at the Prep, and in our lives. Our work with Midnight Run will continue in the fall, as the tentative dates for our runs are October 11th, November 15th, and December 12th. We hope to continue to grow the opportunities for servant leadership here at the Prep, but more importantly, to live, serve others, and be that fire and light in the world, as if we were going to die today – just as St. Edmund reminds us. In doing so, our SEP family will leave the world a much better place than the way we found it.

Katie Hogg Class of 2020 “Most of the people walking the streets ignore the homeless. The midnight run taught me to be a woman for others…being there for people in need even if their past has led them to be in this situation. To lift them up and hopefully inspire them to do better. I think mores students should take advantage of this opportunity to go and serve others.”

Jennifer O’Brien Class of 2020

Samantha Cohen ‘11 Faculty Member “Midnight Run was truly an inspiring experience for me because of the people we met. It allowed me to meet these incredible people we were serving and listen to their stories. The one thing that surprised me the most was how kind and thankful the people that we served were. They were so thankful that we came out in the rain and cold and were so willing to share a piece of themselves with us. In those moments of sharing I was able to empathize with the people we met and reflect on how important it is for our St. Edmund Prep community to be a part of something as wonderful as Midnight Run and help those in our community.”

Michael Leahy Class of 2021 “I gained a lot out of the night. I enjoyed the hours we spent in the city giving various foods, clothes, and toiletries to the groups of people we met. It was very heart-warming. It felt like I was doing the right thing, plain and simple. That’s why I signed up for a second night a few months later.”

“At first, I’ll admit, I was a little nervous and intimidated to participate. Would this feel like too much responsibility for me? Would I get emotional when I saw the conditions they were living in, or feel selfish that I take for granted the things that they long to have? However, once we got to our first stop and I saw how grateful these people were, I knew it was definitely worth it to come. The people I met made me see that these are just normal people, and I felt gratified to take their minds off of their situation.”

Thank You Career Day Presenters!

Career Day has become one of the highlights of our academic year. It is an excellent opportunity for students to ask questions and gather information about potential occupations and discover the skills, talents and resources that various career choices demand. This year’s program did not disappoint. Eighteen alumni, parents and friends participated. Students attended three presentations in small groups. This model allows for each student to connect with the presenters in a smaller setting and is more conducive to a real give and take between speakers and students.

“Our time at The Prep has gifted us with so many moments in which we were able to be ourselves and grow as a class. These moments are brief, fluctuating periods in time yet they are the most permanent and precious treasures we will carry with us from our experience. Maybe one of your moments was small, and something simple, or perhaps grand moments of accomplishment. High school has been about these moments that seem infinitesimal at the time, and yet are those we can tell our children about one day. That is what the past four years have been about. We won’t look back and remember all the tests we had, or even the stress at times when things got out of hand, it will be our precious moments and the love we had for the people in them.“ - Hannah Scott ‘19, Salutatorian Attending Boston College “I know that scripture tells us repeatedly “be not afraid”. And I think today that has a special meaning for all of us. Don’t be scared of the future because we will figure it out, even if we feel unsure right now. God tells us that there is nothing to fear because even as we graduate and we each go our separate ways, we will always be bound together by the family that we have created at St. Edmund Prep. We were Eagles yesterday, we are Eagles today, and for the rest of our lives. Be not afraid of what lies ahead for we are more than prepared to take on whatever it is that life throws at us”

MAKING NEWS

With Gratitude and Love St. Edmund Prep honors seven as they conclude their service to SEP and Catholic Education as they enter retirement. LucyAnn Mineo has been a staple in our Foreign Language department for 28 years, introducing Spanish and Italian to scores of Prep students over the decades. She began her career at our Mary Queen of Heaven School before making the jump to St. Edmund. While at the Prep, Mrs. Mineo has always exhibited a willingness to assume new roles whenever asked. She has served on our scholarship committee and was the parent coordinator in the Development office for many years. Whether coordinating the arrangements of our England Exchange program or one of our many travel study trips, covering all the details of the Walkathon or championing the Junior class as its moderator, Mrs. Mineo has always accomplished her duties with a welcoming smile and motherly care. While we will miss her robust “Good Morning!” and commitment to teaching excellence, we wish her a warm and wonderful retirement surrounded by her family and enjoying her grandchildren.

Mei Richards finishes her 18th year as a member of our Math and Foreign Language Departments after starting her career at Our Lady of Solace. Mrs. Richards mathematics acumen is legendary. She moderated the Math Club for many years and guided a number of our students through the International Math Olympics competition. Mrs. Richards created and sustained our Chinese Studies track and is known for her dedication to her students, especially those most in need of extra assistance. It was quite common to stroll the halls after dismissal and discover Mrs. Richards in her classroom working with a small group of students to reviewing the day’s lessons or prepare for an upcoming test. She hopes that she will be remembered as a productive teacher who worked diligently to not only improve math skills but life skills. She will miss the St. Edmund Prep family and the motivation she received from her students. She is looking forward to traveling and already has trips to Greenland, China, Hawaii and Bora Bora planned. Happy trails Ms. Richards!

Christopher Wright retires after a 40 year career, the last 33 of which has been spent here at St. Edmund Prep. His longevity of service has been marked by his dedication in the Math Department and in many administrative roles, serving as Athletic Director, Director of Admissions, Director of Development and Faculty Union Delegate. His extracurricular resume is just as long having served as a softball coach, head of the strategy Club, the Game club and member of the Emmaus Retreat team, the NHS Advisory Council, the Scholarship Committee and chaperone for the England Exchange and numerous Travel Study trips. He is most proud of his role in building the Boys Athletic program from the groud up and has fond memories of the Boys’ Basketball team winning the Msgr. King tournament. He felt it was a victory for all that put St. Edmund Prep on the map. While he will miss the daily interaction with colleagues and students, he looks forward to spending time with his wife Joanne, his son Michael, and hitting the links as often!

MAKING NEWS

Lucia Anna Piro first walked through the doors of 2474 Ocean Avenue in September 1978, not knowing she was beginning a four decade relationship with St. Edmund Prep. Ms. Piro has been involved in almost every aspect of our school community over the past 40 years. She has taught more than 5,000 students to speak Italian, Spanish, and French, traveled the world with travel study students, recognized our students of character and dedication to academics as moderator of the NHS, and accompanied students on many Emmaus retreats. In the 2010 Canterburian, dedicated to her, she wrote “St. Edmund is my home. I have spent more time here than at my own home or with my own family. In fact, it has become a family to me, and I don’t know how I would be without it.” As she retires, St. Edmund Prep is indebted to a woman who has dedicated her life to the service of Catholic Education and shown all of us her care, concern, love, and deep faith in so many ways. We wish Ms. Piro much happiness and joy with her family in the coming years.

Deacon Ron Rizzuto completes his 43rd year as a teacher and school administrator, the last 16 of which have been at St. Edmund Prep. As the coordinator of Religious studies department, Deacon Ron always shared his unique perspective on religion whether teaching morality or World Religions. Deacon Ron’s impact on the Prep extends far beyond the classroom walls. He was instrumental in bringing a number of signature programs to our school including the Emmaus Retreat program, the Cleopas retreats, Street Corner Gourmet, Summer Outreach and his personal favorite, Midnight Run. He also served as our Admissions Director and Director of Campus Ministry. He is most proud of his role in growing our Faith in Action programs and the privilege of witnessing firsthand our students becoming men and women for others. His future plan is to the live the “Life of Reilly” and to document it all through his trademark selfies. As we say goodbye, we are reminded of Matthew’s gospel and say to Deacon Ron, “Well done good and faithful servant.”

Nurse Kathy DeMello created a safe space in her office for the sick (and not so sick) students of St. Edmund Prep to heal, to dish and to drink a magical elixir unlike any other – her special cup of hot tea! Nurse DeMello has long been the unnamed matriarch of the Prep family. She is hanging up her cap after 22 years of service at the Prep, more than one third of her 52 year nursing career. Whether serving as costume master for theater productions or social director for the faculty and staff parties, Nurse DeMello has never limited herself to sick room monitor. She has taught CPR and First Aid, served on the yearly scholarship committee. Nurse is extremely proud of the awardwinning blood drives she conducted over the years and its ability to instill the importance of blood donation on so many students. In her retirement, she looks forward to sleeping late, spoiling her first grandchild, Theo, who arrived this July, and her most favorite of pastimes – cruising to warm and tropical climates. As many have heard her repeat over the years, “St. Edmund is a great place to grow up and even better place to grow old!” Safe sailing Nurse!

Adelle ‘19 Helps Bring New Scent to Bath and Body Works

Last summer, Brianna Adelle ‘19 interned with Symrise, the world’s 3rd largest manufacturer of flavors, fragrances and cosmetic & aroma ingredients offering more than 30,000 products in over 160 countries. During her internship, Brianna learned first-hand how fragrances are created, developed, and brought to market in consumer products. Brianna worked with the Symrise team on a holiday product launch with perfumer Trish Bilodeau. The new product hit store shelves during the 2018 holiday season! Their new scent “In The Stars” is a warm, sparkling blend of starflower, sandalwood musk, sugared tangelo, white agarwood & radiant amber.” So, the next time you’re in the mall, think of Brianna as you pick up a bottle of “In the Stars” mist, lotion, shower gel, candles, and other bath products.

ALUMNI

Alumni Partnerships Flourish

The Prep is always looking for ways to reconnect with our alumni and produce relationships that are beneficial to both parties. Lucky for us, we were able to put such endeavors together this spring. Loren Avellino ’03 has had a long steady and career at Methodist Hospital where she currently serves as Manager of Community Affairs. Loren devised a plan that allowed a group of our students to make a field a trip to the hospital to explore various fields in health care industry. While on-site, students visited a lab where they witnessed the testing of organs and blood samples, the pharmacy unit, the physical therapy department and a luncheon meeting with two nurses. It was an interactive way to gain a better understanding of the health field and the variety of professions to choose from. In return, Methodist Hospital staff made a pilgrimage to SEP to introduce our faculty and staff to its Stop the Bleed program. Launched in October 2015 by the White House, Stop the Bleed is a national awareness campaign and a call to action. Stop the Bleed is intended to cultivate grassroots efforts that encourage bystanders to become trained, equipped, and empowered to help in a bleeding

emergency before professional help arrives. This initiative was started in response to the unfortunate proliferation of mass shootings in our schools and public spaces. Carmela Spinnelli ’73, fashion historian and international admission liaison for the renowned Savannah College of Art and Design, has returned to St. Edmund on a number of occasions to share her enthusiasm for creative careers and to inform our students about the wonderful opportunities available to students at this premier institution. Her visits have become a yearly highlight for our Sequential Art Program students. As part of her presentation, Ms. Spinelli has touted the SCAD Summer Seminar series which offers high school students a valuable educational experience while developing their creative vision through exciting art and design assignments and projects. Students attend workshops and have an all-access pass to the university’s extensive facilities, resources and libraries. This year, Carolina Gmelch ‘21, applied for - and received - a full scholarship to attend SCAD as a summer seminar student – an opportunity she would never have realized had it not been for the relationship with alumna Carmela Spinelli.

As Ms. Spinelli said, “I don’t think I could have been happier had it been my own child! I am so thrilled to have a student from my alma mater take advantage of this amazing opportunity. It is rewarding beyond words!” Carolina spent two weeks in Savannah studying color theory, mixed media and was even able to dabble in digital photography, having never worked in the field before! She met students from all over the world and roomed with fellow aspiring artists from the Dominican Republic, Arizona, South Carolina and ironically, Brooklyn! Days were spent in class and evenings gave her an opportunity to explore Savannah. It was her first time in the south and she was struck by the preponderance of one-story buildings, urban gardens and a general relaxed pace that is so very different from NYC. When asked about her experience, Carolina shared, “These two weeks helped me so much when I think about my future. Before SCAD I was unsure about my ability to pursue a career in a creative field and compete on the same level as other artists, but now I feel very capable. I am confident that I can successfully pursue a career in the creative arts field successfully, if I so choose.”

IN MEMORIAM

www.stedmundprep.org

IN MEMORIAM

Our Sister, Our Friend On July 4, 2019, the St. Edmund Prep community was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Sister Barbara Doyle, CSJ. Sister Barbara was a Sister of St. Joseph of Brentwood for 63 years, serving the St. Edmund community for 32 years. Sister Barbara was born in Queens and attended St. Theresa’s parish school in Woodside and The Mary Louis Academy. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1956 and earned a Bachelor’s degree from Brentwood College and a Master’s in Education from Queens College. She taught upper grades in Holy Name, Ascension, Our Lady of Snows, St. Angela Hall, Queen of Peace and Immaculate Conception parish schools where she earned the reputation of being an excellent teacher. Sister Barbara joined the St. Edmund faculty in 1986 as a member of the Math department, but quickly found herself lending her talents to the many areas of need she experienced during some difficult years at St. Edmund. She became the Dean of Students in 1990 and Assistant Principal in 1995. Sister Barbara was instrumental in navigating the tides of change at St. Edmund as we transitioned to a coeducational school. Many students remember her waiting in the lobby each morning with clipboard and ruler in hand, reminding them about how the uniform was to be worn and how they were to conduct themselves in a manner appropriate to a St. Edmund student. It was in these moments that we were reminded of Sister Barbara’s unique ability to be intimidating but loving, and tough but fair when the circumstances warranted. In every moment of her job as an administrator, she always remained a teacher, guide and mentor, recognizing in each of the thousands of students whose lives she touched, the unique manifestation of God’s love. In 1999, Sister founded the Office of Campus Ministry, serving as its director until her retirement in 2018. In this role, Sister Barbara was able to be a true Sister of St. Joseph, an example of a woman of faith,

simplicity, and charity. Her time as Campus Minister was filled with the coordination of many liturgies, prayer services, and penance services all aimed at bringing others to come to know our Awesome God, and her friend Jesus. Throughout the school day many students sought a diversion from the pressures of academic life in her office with a game of Othello or with a few minutes moving the sand around in her iconic Zen Garden. It was in these moments that Sister Barbara embraced each of us, sharing her own deep faith through individual, personal encounters. As moderator of the Student Council, she shepherded many important service projects through the years. Regina Gueren Lombardi ‘91 credits Sister Barbara with instilling the importance of integrity - how important it is to honor your word and commitments. If you cannot honor those commitments, Sister Barbara encouraged the students to seek assistance from those around you, find the resources available to overcome obstacles, and be accountable. “Say what you mean and mean what you say,” Sister Barbara would often say, words which are incredibly important in building character. Through her actions and words, it was with great beauty and grace that Sister Barbara inspired us. She offered these words to the graduating class of 1991: “Life is a journey, not a destination. You truly create your new day. Life is yours, in freedom, to meet with and react to all people and experiences it brings; its joy, its sorrows, its tensions. You truly create your new day.” It is with this extraordinary attitude towards life that Sister Barbara guided us all. We remember this remarkable woman and faithful disciple of Jesus Christ. Sister Barbara knew of God’s love for her and wanted others to live the gospel command to love one another. We thank God for the many blessings he bestowed upon us through Sister Barbara’s ministry among our St. Edmund community. We pray that Sister Barbara will be ushered into the place prepared for her since the beginning of the world.

“Our sister was a teacher. Blessed with both mathematical reasoning skills, and a caring heart to share her faith instructing religion, her 32 years at the Prep can most certainly be characterized by dedication to her students and their education. Never taking the easy route, she remained committed to St. Edmund Prep, even through the difficult years. Sister Barbara and I served on the Senior Awards Committee together. A few years back, she authored a revised description of our school’s highest honor – the Eagle Award. She noted that “The eagle is the only bird to fly directly into a thunderstorm.” It is no exaggeration to say that the Prep would not be where it is today, were it not for Sister Barbara Doyle, a true Eagle.” - from the funeral homily of Deacon Mark Amatrucola, co

This article is from a collection of reflections on Sister Barbara’s life from the dedication of the 2002 Canterburian, from James Grillo ‘02, from Regina Gueren Lombardi ‘91, from the funeral homily of Deacon Mark Amatrucola, co, and from Sister Helen Kearney, CSJ, President of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Brentwood.
