WELCOME

From the Principal’s Desk

Allison McGinnis On June 9th, the St. Edmund Prep family celebrated the moment when the class of 2018 moved the tassel on their cap from the right to the left, signifying their transition from student of St. Edmund Prep to Alumni. This graduating class brought with it an altruistic spirit, a thirst for knowledge and a desire to create great change in the world. The class of 2018 took the mission of St. Edmund Prep and brought it to life. However, it wasn’t just the seniors who had an extraordinary year, culminating with 28 million dollars in college scholarships; the entire St. Edmund Prep community had an extraordinary year. Our freshman class kicked off the school year with brand new Chromebooks in hand. We launched our new in-house SAT prep course, won a record number of awards in Model Congress competitions and scholarships in the American Legion Oratorical Contest and the IB Visual Arts Expo exceeded expectations. We saw the first steps taken in the growth of an SEP Marching Band. We saw another successful spring musical with School House Rock. Athletically, we had a record breaking year with a City Championship in Girls’ Varsity Volleyball and three City Championships in Varsity Softball, Varsity Baseball and JV Baseball, and a Diocesan championship for the JV Softball team, a St. Edmund

Prep first! Our first ever (and now annual) 5K was a roaring success. Our student leaders certainly did not disappoint, with Hurricane Relief, Project Night Night, the swim team Swim-a-Thon, and Dig Pink; all raising money for those in need. Our 85th year brought with it an excitement that was infectious and memories to last a lifetime. Our physical infrastructure also saw some long overdue maintenance. We upgraded our heating system with a new boiler and applied the money raised from the Walk-a-Thon to a brand new state-of-the-art sound system in the gym. We installed a new security system, and reopened the renovated computer lab and new seminar room with modular furniture and Smart technology. The 2018-2019 school year will bring with it new initiatives that will continue to ensure that our St. Edmund Prep students have access to the best educational resources. The two biggest initiatives are an infrastructure assessment and a technology assessment. Over the next few months we will undergo a wall-to-wall needs assessment of our building. It is our hope to announce plans for a major infrastructure improvement plan over the next few months. In addition to planning upgrades to the physical building, we will also be improving upon those things that happen within these walls. We will be starting a 9th and 10th grade retreat program. The Introduction to Computer Science class has been revamped, and Introduction to Engineering and AP Computer Science are being offered. We will continue to see opportunities for bold learning inside the classroom as the English and Social Studies departments team up to create dynamic lessons for our incoming 9th graders. We will continue to give our teachers and students the tools they need to work collaboratively, to develop a deep understanding of knowledge, and the ability to communicate that which they have learned. St. Edmund Prep is a unique school; we are one-of-a-kind and offer an education that is different and dynamic. We do not strive to be like any others, we only strive to be the very best us. Thank you for all you do to support our work!

Art on Display The IB Art Exhibition is a celebration of our IB Art student’s intense dedication to their craft and their amazing artwork. On the evening of Wednesday, February 28th, six seniors presented selected artworks to their families, friends, the administration, faculty, and staff in the 3rd Annual IB Visual Art Student Exhibition. Thomas Fandacone ‘18, Vincent Gaizza ‘18, Bridget Harte ‘18, Michelle Huynh ‘18, Gabrielle Letford ‘18, and Aleyana Momplaisir ‘18 have been dedicated Sequential Art Students over the course of their four years at the Prep. To these students, this exhibition is more than just an IB component; it provides the opportunity to display their technical accomplishments, creative abilities, and stated intentions as well as a forum to justify their selections. At the gallery entrance, guests were instantly struck by Bridget Harte’s “Glass Ceiling,” a mixed media piece suspended from above. As viewers looked down upon their reflection, they read Harte’s commentary on how so many people try to break through this

“glass ceiling” but are “held back” in life due to circumstances beyond their control. Aleyana Momplaisir enclosed her artworks thus providing a pathway for viewers to walk through. This led them through a series of provocative pieces which asked them to question their pre-conceived notions. Thomas Fandacone also included the participation of his audience through “What’s In There,” where the viewers were challenged to face the fear of the unknown. Gabrielle Letford’s well-researched and curated exhibition celebrated the complexity and beauty that lies within all females. She stressed female empowerment through a variety of media. While the progression of the modern woman was celebrated in Gabrielle’s art, Michelle Huynh presented a somewhat contrasting collection. Torn between traditional Vietnamese values and the westernization of women, Michelle’s work explored the loss of cultural traditions as

women progress in today’s society. Initially inspired by an Austrian street artist, Nychos, Vincent Gaizza’s exhibition silently screamed his warning regarding the “corruption” of mankind through a series of graphic, narrative imagery. His collection ended with an artwork depicting the eventual destruction of Earth as seen through the reflection of an astronaut’s helmet. This powerful image received countless forms of praise and commentary even weeks after the exhibition night. This piece was purchased from the artist shortly after the show. More underclassmen and alumni were in attendance this year than for previous IB exhibitions. They were all inspired by the artwork and many cannot wait to see what next year’s candidates will offer. Congratulations to all the IB Visual Art candidates for presenting a remarkable exhibition!

WHERE TO IN ‘19? Travel Study heads to Germany next Spring!

Goddag (Hello) Travel Study! This year, the travel study class went to the Scandinavian capitals of Norway, Denmark, and Sweden. The journey began in Oslo where the group visited a viking museum, and the Vigeland Sculpture Park, which was a highlight of the trip for many students. It was so much better in person than the pictures they had seen in class! On Easter morning, they flew to Copenhagen and attended Mass before touring the city. They went to the top of the Rundetaarn (round tower) by walking up a seemingly endless spiral ramp and then took

a beautiful bus ride up the coast of Denmark to visit Kronborg castle, the model for Elsinore castle in Hamlet. After driving across a 5-mile long bridge, the group arrived in Sweden. They visited the Vasa museum in Stockholm, which houses an almost fully intact 17th-century ship, and Skansen, an outdoor living museum full of houses from different time periods and animals from around the country. What an incredible trip! We can’t wait for Germany in 2019!

2017-2018 was a banner year for the St. Edmund Prep Athletic Department, as the school captured four Catholic High School Athletic Association New York City championships and three Brooklyn-Queens Diocesan titles. Add in a prestigious triumph for the Step Team at a regional competition, and this past year was the most successful athletically in the Prep’s history. In November, our Volleyball program was riding high. Both the JV and Varsity teams won their divisions in the regular season and earned top seeds in the Diocesan tournament under the direction of Head Coach Kathleen O’Neill. The Eagles powered through the competition with each game

capturing their respective Brooklyn-Queens Diocesan Championship with exciting wins at Queens College on November 8th. On the Varsity level, the next step would be the New York City Championship Game against Archdiocesan winner Maria Regina. The game was a back-and-forth affair until the fifth and deciding set. Powered by the athletic play of Claire McNeice ’19 and Christina Morales ’18, SEP rallied to score the last three points and take a 27-25 win to secure the school’s first City Championship in Volleyball since 1987. The Eagle magic continued through the winter, as the always exciting SEP Step Team took first place in the prestigious Orange Wave Step Competition at Thomas Jefferson High

School. The team performed an energetic and thrilling routine that wowed the crowd and impressed the judges. Overall, this was the fifth consecutive top-three finish for Head Coach Shamire Marc ‘10 and the SEP Step Team. It is the second straight win for the Eagles at the Orange Wave, long considered the premier Step showcase in Brooklyn. As the weather turned warmer in the spring, it became apparent that the Eagles were heating up as well. The Eagles Softball program continued their recent dominance of the CHSAA Brooklyn-Queens division, as both the JV and Varsity teams rolled through their regular seasons without a league loss. The JV team, under the leadership of Head Coach Mike Panico, won its second consecutive Diocesan Championship and fourth in the last six seasons as it defeated Bishop Kearney on May 12th. The Varsity team, led by Head Coach Kristin O’Neill had to wait out several delays caused by weather and school events before finally beating McClancy in the Brooklyn-Queens Final. That gave the Eagles a berth into the City Championship Game against Archdiocesan champion

St. Catherine’s Academy. SEP’s offensive juggernaut scored 14 runs in the first four innings, highlighted by big hits from Kelsey Kane ’19, Brianna Riccardi ’21, and Michelle Loforte ’19 to back the solid pitching of Claire McNeice ’19 to take the title. On the baseball diamond, an updated divisional alignment saw the Eagles match up against several new opponents in a restructured intersectional league. Head Coach Mike Carney P’14 guided the JV team to an undefeated regular season and an exhilarating extra-inning win over Msgr. Scanlan in the City Championship Game on May 29th at Fordham University. The Varsity team captured the regular season title with an impressive 11-3 record, but after losing the first playoff game, Head Coach Joe Romano ’04 saw his team play with their backs against the wall for the remainder of the postseason. Keyed by the dynamic performance on the mound and at the plate from CHSAA Player of the Year Lou Lombardi ’18 and Chris Zinser ’18, the Eagles won five games in eight days to capture the school’s first Baseball City Championship since 1998.

A packed gym saw the Senior squad narrowly lose to the Prep’s faculty, 65-58 Under the direction of Nurse Kathy DeMello, the seniors mounted a balanced attack in which 12 different students scored points. Beyond the great camaraderie and enjoyment of the day, the event also raised over $1,000 for the Jose Rodriguez Memorial Scholarship Fund. Bold Learning. Uncommon Leaders.

Volleyball Dig Pink SEP joins Side Out Foundation in battle against breast cancer

For the second year in a row, our Girls Varsity and Junior Varsity Volleyball teams have partnered with the Side Out Foundation to raise money for breast cancer awareness and research. As a community at St. Edmund Prep we are becoming better educated about this disease and we decided to raise funds to help find a cure. Funds raised for the Side-Out Foundation go toward a clinical trial specifically for patients with stage IV breast cancer, the most advanced form of the disease and the least funded area of research. During the month of October, St. Edmund hosted many opportunities for our community to participate in the Dig Pink Campaign. The volleyball teams sold pink wristbands and limited edition SEP Volleyball “Dig Pink” T-shirts during lunch periods. The Eagles hosted St. John’s Prep in our second annual Dig Pink Game on Thursday, October 19th. To round out the month, SEP sponsored a pink dress down for all students who made a $5 donation to the campaign. The students challenged the faculty in a charity volleyball game on Friday October 27th. We are proud to share that this year’s Dig Pink campaign raised $4,500! All proceeds from these events will be donated to the Side Out Foundation.

We are so proud of our students who spearheaded the Dig Pink campaign! Special thank you to the members of the JV and Varsity Volleyball teams and our Dig Pink Ambassador Stephanie Cacace ‘18. The Side Out Foundation has recognized Stephanie as an Ambassador and has awarded her one of four national scholarships based on her outstanding coordination of the SEP Dig Pink events. Stephanie’s efforts were also acknowledged by the school community, as St. Edmund Prep presented her with the Dominican Service Medallion at the annual Senior Awards Dinner.

SEP Softball Strikes Out Autism

Student Athletes Enjoy Academic Success

The St. Edmund Prep Softball program took part in the annual Strike Out Autism tournament at Bergen Beach on Saturday April 28th. The Eagles joined over a dozen other Catholic high schools from across the metropolitan area to raise awareness and funds for Autism research and related programs. Both the JV and Varsity teams played two games, participated in a silent auction, and assisted with various raffles throughout the day. In all, over $5,000 was raised for this worthy endeavor.

Mayor’s Cup Selects Five Eagles The NYC Mayor’s Cup is a series of ten sporting events that determines the “Best in the City”. Student-athletes of all ages and from across all five boroughs compete year-round to prove they’re New York City’s best at baseball, lacrosse, track & field, wrestling, chess, soccer, softball, cricket, cross country and basketball. This year five SEP student athletes were selected to compete in the Mayor’s Cup:

The ideal of being a student-athlete at St. Edmund Prep is taken seriously. During the 2017-2018 school year, over 165 individual student-athletes were on the honor roll for at least one marking period. Student-athletes posted an overall cumulative GPA of 89.3 this year, making the balance between athletic success and academic excellence the norm at the Prep. As a way of recognizing these achievements in the classroom, all student-athletes on the honor roll were recognized at the Athletic Awards Dinner for each season. Additionally, the Athletic Directors’ Cup for Academic Excellence was awarded to the team with the highest GPA during their respective season of competition. In the fall, the Girls Tennis Team (above) earned the cup by posting an academic average of 96.6. During the winter season, a GPA of 95.6 netted the honor for the Girls Varsity Basketball Team. The Varsity Softball Team posted an average of 94.2 to win the award for the Spring season. The Athletic Department also recognized individual scholar student-athletes. Louis Lombardi ‘18 (baseball) and Alyssa Forrest ‘18 (Tennis, Cheer, and Lacrosse) were selected as the recipients of the Marine Corps Distinguished Student-Athlete Awards, while track runner Jared Rios ‘18, the valedictorian of the Class of 2018, was recognized for having the highest overall GPA among graduating studentathletes with the Sister Denise Award.

Romano ‘18 to JPMorgan Chase Smart Start Program Fourth SEP student in the last two years to earn spot in prestigous scholarship program SEP is pleased to announce that out of a field of over 300 applicants, Josephine Romano ‘18 was one of ten New York high school students to earn the prestigious JPMorgan Chase Smart Start Scholarship. As a recipient of the award, Josephine has not only received a full four-year scholarship, but will also intern at one of the largest global financial services firms in the world. During the academic year, Josephine will spend 10-20 hours per week at a JPMorgan Chase location in Manhattan, in addition to 40 hours per week during the summers. By design, she will have an opportunity to rotate through various departments, picking

up valuable real-world experiences along the way. Josephine’s inspiration to apply for the scholarship came from Bithja Pierre ‘17 and recipient of the same award last year. Bithja wanted to share her own experience with members of the junior and senior class who are considering a career in finance. She came by the Prep in March, prepared with a motivational presentation for a classroom full of students who were anxious to hear what she had to say. Bithja struck a chord with Josephine, who remains in touch with her to this day. Josephine will begin her studies this fall as an accounting major at St. John’s University.

Next Stop: Shanghai for Berat ‘18 Over her elementary and high school career, Lindsay Berat ‘18 took advantage of every opportunity she had to travel to overseas destinations that included countries in Europe and South East Asia. In addition to being a strong student academically, Lindsay devoted her spare time to her passions: singing, playing the flute and erhu, and a compelling desire to master the Chinese language. Lindsay’s musical performances have included venues such as Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. Lindsay excelled the moment she entered the Prep, four short years ago. Her enthusiasm for academics and the need to be challenged drove her to our International Baccalaureate Programme. The IB Diploma is widely accepted at universities across the globe. In addition to her IB course load, an independent language program was developed so she could further enhance her Chinese speaking skills.

10

www.stedmundprep.org

When asked about her IB experience at SEP, Lindsay felt her journey was transformative. She enjoyed her classroom discussions and indicated it was just the way she liked to learn. She described her time at SEP as a truly unique and global experience. Lindsay took her love of the Chinese language to the Yunnan Province this past October and participated in a competition for foreign high school students. The contest was designed to test one’s proficiency in Chinese. Lindsay placed first in the Americas and third overall. In her travels, she has met and stays in touch with other IB students in places such as Latvia, Lesotho, and Grenada and loves to do what she describes as “connecting globally.” Lindsay Berat will begin her studies this fall at New York University in Shanghai and plans to major in biology and Chinese global studies.

Michael restored a portion of the Nature Trail at the Marine Park Salt Marsh Nature Center. Michael joins his brothers Doug ‘14 and Gregory as an Eagle Scout. Isabella Gmelch ‘18 (bottom left) was presented Girl Scouting’s highest award, the Gold Award, in a ceremony on May 18th. Isabella is a member of Troop 2402 at Holy Name of Jesus Parish. For her gold award project, Isabella created a workshop, “Healthy Body, Happy Mind”, which was open to girls in grades 6-11, to advocate maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Isabella is pictured here with the CEO of the Girl Scouts of Greater New York, Meredith Maskara.

MODEL CONGRESS TEAM SHINES This year the SEPMC team competed at two prestigious government simulations in the months of February and March. The first on saw the nine SEP team members travel to Harvard University for the fourth consecutive year. Over the course of four days, the team wrote bills, debated legislation, and enacted new policy into law in their respective committees with over 1500 students from around the world. Jared Rios ‘18 succeeded at the highest level, earning honorable mention. One short month later, a team of eight ventured to Philadelphia to the University of Pennsylvania. SEPMC again competed with the nation’s best and rose to the top. Lindsay Berat ‘18 won the highly sought after gavel for her committee with Jack Harkin ‘20, Jared Rios ‘18, and Matt Moran ‘21 all receiving honorable mention. The students showed not only what truly gifted students they are, but the manner in which they represented SEP, their families, and themselves was exemplary and we could not be prouder.

Senior Class Gift

Since 2010, the members of each year’s graduating class have supported a Senior Class Gift. Each senior is asked to contribute $20.18 toward a senior gift. In recognition of their support, participating seniors are invited to take part in the 100 Nights dinner where faculty and staff serve as waiters and waitresses. It has quickly become one of the high points of Senior year. This year, the senior legacy was to organize what has become the faculty copy room into an appropriate storage area for our student athletes’ equipment. (Many of our alumni will recognize this space as the school store!). This area once featured the senior gift of the Class of 1965, the Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy tiled plaques.

Unfortunately, these tiles had started to dislodge from the wall and once the bathroom renovations were underway, a number of these irreplaceable tiles had shattered and could not be repaired. It was decided to photograph this tile artwork for display in honor of the Class of 1965 and to modernize and update one of our most public spaces. A new wall mural was installed highlighting the St. Edmund Prep student experience and emphasising what Bold Learning, Uncommon Leaders means. We also added bulletin boards in the area for student notices and athletic department announcements. We are most grateful to the 140 members of the Class of 2018 who participated in the campaign for their generosity and commitment to the Prep.

Recent Alumni Share College Experience In January we welcomed eight recent Alumni back to the Prep to share their college experiences with our junior class. They visited classrooms and answered questions about college life, making the transition to college and what they might do differently if they could go back to their junior year. Thank you to (shown L to R) Marissa Moran ‘17 Fordham University, Kellie Diodato ‘17 Marymount Manhattan College, Devin Gavigan ‘17 Sacred Heart University, Mollie O’Brien ‘17 Adelphi University, Taylor Tstasis ‘17 SUNY Delhi, Angela Colasuonno ‘17 St. John’s University, Jacqueline Zito ‘17 Adelphi University, and Brianna Demorcy ‘15 Emmanauel College (not pictured), for sharing their time with us!

Once again, the Class of 1966 has generously worked together to support a scholarship for a rising Senior in memory of their beloved teacher and members of their class who have passed away. This scholarship is awarded to a student who goes above and beyond in their daily life as a Prep student. Brigid McEvoy ‘19 is this year’s recipient and is pictured here with Suzanne Filosa Linares ’66 and Principal Allison McGinnis. Brigid is a student who has made a significant mark in the Prep community through scholarship and service.

Thanks to the generous financial support of the families and friends of our students at our Walkathon this past October, SEP was able to complete a long-awaited upgrade to the audio system in the gymnasium. After improving our electrical infrastructure, stateof-the art speakers were hung on both sides of the stage, two new amplifiers were installed, along with a Bluetooth capable control unit and mixing board for theatrical productions.

Mission & Values Bringing the SEP Brand to Life

MAKING NEWS

It became increasingly clear that the transformative student experience at SEP needed to be clearly shared with the world. Throughout the past academic year, the St. Edmund Prep community celebrated 85 years of excellence as an institution. Acknowledging the history and growth of St. Edmund Preparatory High School offered a unique opportunity for the faculty, staff, and administration to reflect on the type of school St. Edmund was in 1932, the type of school it currently is in 2018, and the type of school St. Edmund Prep strives to be in the 21st century. As a result of this introspection, the faculty, staff, and administration realized that the type of education, both in and out of the classroom, that is provided to the young men and women in St. Edmund Preparatory High School is truly like no other. In a vibrant community of personal student engagement, St. Edmund Prep is an exceptional Catholic high school of vigorous, innovative learning, and transformative development of character, faith, and leadership. It became increasingly clear that this kind of transformative student experience at St. Edmund Prep needed to be shared with the public. St. Edmund Prep’s mission to empower young men and women to become confident and self-disciplined participants in an everchanging global society needed to be spread. St. Edmund Prep’s Catholic message to be men and women in service of others needed to be heard throughout New York City. Therefore, in conjunction with celebrating its 85th anniversary, St. Edmund Preparatory High School has rebranded and repositioned itself as the top school of choice for young men and women in New York City. The rebranding process started like many things in life, with solidifying the expected outcomes of a St. Edmund Prep education. A proper foundation ensures continued, longterm success. It ensures stability and growth. The same can be said about education. With that idea in mind, St. Edmund Prep has developed its own building blocks that form the foundation of success for all of it students: bold learning, engaged servant leadership, holistic character development, and creativity and innovation. At St. Edmund Preparatory High School, students are at the forefront of their education. This student-centered philosophy

has greatly enhanced the learning that takes place in SEP classrooms. St. Edmund Prep is home to collaborative learning environments, where students work together to discover the answers to their questions for themselves and are challenged to push themselves out of their comfort zone and develop deeply inquisitive and analytical minds. This is the bold learning St. Edmund Prep fosters and encourages among the teachers and students, and it represents the first major building block of a St. Edmund Prep education. Bold learning enables St. Edmund Prep to continue to strive toward academic excellence and it is what makes St. Edmund Prep a top college preparatory high school. Coupled with that vision of bold learning, St. Edmund Prep offers myriad opportunities for its students to connect with their faith and follow Christ’s example as a servant for others. The St. Edmund Prep community consistently calls its members to action for the greater good, whether it is through the Hunger Awareness Challenge, SEP’s fundraising efforts for the SideOut Foundation, or its most recent endeavor to partner with Project Night Night, an organization dedicated to assisting homeless children in the area. This active servant engagement helps connect a St. Edmund Prep student’s spiritual journey with St. Edmund Preparatory High School’s identity as a Catholic school. Thus, a student’s faith is enriched as he or she reflects on his or her own spirituality, and also rewarded as he or she has made a positive impact in his or her community. Building on those concepts of bold learning and engaged servant leadership is the third building block to an SEP education - holistic character development. The faculty, staff, and administration of SEP believe learning does not just take place in the classroom. A student does not attend St. Edmund Prep simply to learn, but also to grow and mature as an individual and reach a potential he or she never thought imaginable. At St. Edmund Prep, young men and women are part of a much larger family, a family committed to molding its students to be exceptional leaders of character and

sound moral judgment. It is St. Edmund Prep’s philosophy that the skills and concepts learned in the classroom must be paired with charitable and principled minds and hearts. This is what enables SEP to fulfill its mission and educate young men and women eager to be leaders in society. The final building block to an SEP education is creativity and innovation. St. Edmund Prep proudly supports the fine and performing arts. SEP offers outstanding four-year art and band programs as well as a host of extracurriculars designed to excite its students’ creative drives. But creativity exists in other areas besides the fine and performing arts. St. Edmund Prep has responded by designing a STEAM curriculum and offering 1:1 learning through the use of Google Chromebooks and by supporting an award-winning robotics team. Innovation is about moving forward in an ever-changing landscape. It is about progress. A St. Edmund Prep education provides its students with the lifelong tools and the skills necessary to meet challenges head-on and make positive impact in their communities. As its 85th anniversary comes to a close, St. Edmund Preparatory High School is proud to unveil its new brand and identity in the 21st century. St. Edmund Preparatory High School is home to “bold learning, uncommon leaders.” St. Edmund Prep students are dynamic, inquisitive, faith-filled learners eager to explore the challenges of the world around them and find solutions that meet the needs of the people around them. St. Edmund Prep students are unique in their own right and their four-year experience at 2474 Ocean Avenue gives them the vision, insight, and compassion to usher in a better future for generations to come. Now, as never before, the world needs thoughtful, highly skilled leaders of outstanding character. These are the students and graduates of St. Edmund Prep, young men and women inspired with a passion to learn and ready to use their knowledge and skills to serve God, one another, and the world around them.

Bold Learning. Uncommon Leaders.

Newest Alumni Ready for Next Step “One day we will look back at our yearbooks to remember what exactly we spent our four years doing at The Prep. We won’t always remember the Walk-athons and the StreetCorners and the Christmas Shows. But what we will always have with us thanks to St. Edmund Prep is the strong moral character that we built between the four walls of 2474 Ocean Avenue. I believe wholeheartedly that the Prep’s mission has been fulfilled in every one of us. Whether it was an Emmaus Retreat, a class, a teacher, a club, a team, or the Summer Outreach Project, at some point in our high school careers we were all changed for the better. “ - Christina Colasuonno ‘18, Salutatorian Attending St. John’s University

“At this time in our lives, we have become very retrospective. After these four years, I’ve realized what’s important to some, may not necessarily be important to others. Classes like english were instrumental in helping me find what I want to do in life. Basketball taught me what is important in life and the work ethic behind any success. I can proudly say that St. Edmund Prep has shaped who I am today. It has shaped the company I keep, what I do in my life, and of course it has given me the best years of my 18 year old life. And for that, I am eternally grateful. - Conor Leon ‘18, Baccalaureate Mass Speaker Attending St. Joseph’s College For more about our senior class visit www.stedmundprep.org/classof2018/

“I was introduced to the American Legion Oratorical Competition during my Freshman year. Ms. McEvoy approached me to try it and encouraged me. It was a monumental opportunity. “Service opportunities at The Prep have played an influential role in where I am today and how I see my future. In going out of our way to help others, I realized how influential and humbling devoting your time to others can be. I know that I want to invest time throughout my entire life to the service of others. “

“Here at St. Edmund Prep, I’ve had teachers who have pushed me past my limits. Not only to look at things at a surface level, but to critically think. Rather than be followers in life, they encouraged us to be the leaders we have the potential to be.”

“I was challenged not only academically, but to be a leader and to serve. Because of my experiences on the Emmaus Retreat Team, Hunger Awareness, Outreach, and Project Night Night, I was constantly reminded of the Gospel call to serve others.”

“I really enjoyed my IB classes, and the broader world view approach they took. We were able to look at both the subject matter and its importance world wide; the international impact on different regions. It was fun and important to me to see things from broader perspective.“

MAKING NEWS

Onward to New Adventures Three St. Edmund Prep stalwarts announced their retirements this year - collectively representing 75 years of service. Susan Moquin joined the Prep faculty in 1999, having received her degree in English from St. Joseph’s College and her Master’s degree in Education from Fordham University. After spending six years at Good Shepherd School, she made the leap to high School English. She has taught all four grade levels and became our go-to AP English teacher. While at the Prep, she was very proud to serve as the moderator of the Equinox Magazine, a compilation of our student’s short stories, poetry and illustrations. She worked closely with Mr. Kirk in redefining the Freshman Mentor program so that a true bond formed between freshman and Senior partnerships. She also served as the Coordinator of the International Scholars Honors Program. While she will miss watching students grasp concepts and grow in their writing abilities, she is looking forward to spending more time with family and traveling.

John Fabrizio was born and bred in Marine Park, attending P.S. 207, Marine Park Junior High, James Madison High School before receiving his degree from Brooklyn College. Joining the Prep faculty in 1993, it is hard to imagine the total number of Prep students he must have taught since he has been the sole teacher of the mandatory Intro to Music course. As the St. Edmund Parish Choral Director, John shared his love of music with our students throught the Liturgical Choir, chorus and piano ensemble. It was Mr. Fabrizio who brightned the holidays with morning Christmas Carols. As an active member of the Foreign Language department, teaching Italian 1 and 2 as well as IB Italian, he served as Department Coordinator. He will miss the ability to witness the growth and maturity of his students and his many friends at the Prep but looks forward to rest and relaxation without setting the alarm clock!

Sr. Barbara Doyle, CSJ retires after a stellar career at the Prep, joining the faculty as a Mathematics teacher in 1986. She soon joined the administration, first serving as the Dean of Students and then Assistant Principal. Once the school became co-ed, Sister founded the Office of Campus Ministry, serving as the Campus Minister, coordinating endless numbers of liturgies, prayer services, and penance services. As moderator of the Student Council, she shepherded a number of important service projects through the building. Regina Gueren Lombardi ‘91 credits Sr. Barbara Doyle with instilling the importance of integrity - how important it is to honor your word and commitments. If you cannot honor those commitments, Sr. Barbara encouraged the students to seek assistance from those around you, find the resources available to overcome obstacles, and be accountable. “Say what you mean and mean what you say,” words which are incredibly important in building character.

Parents, We Want You! The Parent Volunteer Committee (PVC) is comprised of a group of parents that support the fundraising efforts of the St. Edmund Prep Development Team. Each year the PVC takes on more responsibility to help raise much needed funds for the Prep. These monies allow our school to offer all the academic tools necessary to keep up with the everchanging global environment and each student’s individual needs. The PVC is charged with running events which will build community spirit and support the operational fundraising needed on a yearly basis. We are always looking for new members to help fill a variety of roles. The PVC firmly lives by the mantra “many hands make light work.” The fundraising needs for any Catholic school may seem enormous for an individual, but if we all contribute what we have to offer, great things can happen. We all have different skill sets. Some are great organizers and may want to chair an

event? Perhaps you have an idea for different types of fundraising events that have been successful elsewhere and you would like to bring them to the Prep? Do you own a business and know other business people that share our beliefs and would like to donate or sponsor our events? Do you know your neighborhood well enough to solicit donations? Each event requires individuals who can help with registration, canvass stores and seek donations, prepare gift baskets, serve on food and beverage committees as well as decorating and set-up. So even if you cannot attend every meeting, we are able to find a way for each individual to contribute. The first PVC meeting will take place on Thursday, September 27, 2018 at 6:30 pm in the school’s Art Gallery. For more information please contact Mr. Michael Leahy (mleahy@stedmundprep.org) in the Development office.

Wade ‘18 Spends Summer at Google Summer Institute Monique Wade ’18 entered her senior year anticipating that law school would be in her future. But then everything changed when she began studying computer science in Mr. Pinnavaia’s Advanced Computer Science class. “I fell in love with coding during that class. Before, I never thought computer science was even an option for me; I always assumed computer science was a field dominated by white men, all sitting in a dark room trying to hack into the Pentagon. However, it’s nothing like that. Computer science is a stimulating, fun, and problemsolving based environment that is starting to boom with diversity.” Monique is headed to the University at Albany this fall to begin her degree in computer science. Before she heads to UAlbany, she is currently taking part in Google’s Computer Science Summer Institute. CSSI is a three-week intensive program for graduating high school seniors who love technology and are planning to study computer science, software engineering and other closely related subjects; generally for students from historically underrepresented groups in technology-related fields (minorities, women, etc.). Participants are taught advanced programming languages such as JavaScript and Python. Those languages and programming techniques are implemented into Google’s AppEngine to create web applications. Participants have the opportunity to present their creations to Google Engineers for feedback and collaboration. In reflecting on her involvement in the CSSI, Monique commented, “Participating in this program is extremely important to me as a minority and as a woman. Having just started coding and to then be affirmed by

Google that this is where I should be, gives me the confidence that I chose the right major. It has also put a lot in perspective for me; the world is much bigger than the walls of SEP and you have to be comfortable with failure and with the fact that you won’t grasp every concept right away. I am really thankful for the opportunity I had this summer and I’m really excited for my future in computer science and at Google. I encourage anyone who wants to try computer science to definitely take the leap; while it may be challenging, it is definitely worth it.”

Marketing Helps NYFAC Imam Welcomed

This year’s College Marketing company, Soaring Eagles, Inc. designed an Under Armour dri-fit shirt as part of their practical company project. All proceeds from the shirt sales went to perform a service project for New York Families for Autistic Children (NYFAC), based in Howard Beach. Members of the company spent a day at NYFAC leading activities and sharing lunch with the day habilitation clients. Thank you to all who supported Soaring Eagles, Inc. and made this project possible!

This past May, Deacon Ron and Deacon Andy’s World Religions classes welcomed Imam Mahmood Kauser, the religious leader of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community. He spoke with the classes about the tenets of the Muslim religious tradition and answered questions from the students. “It was a beautiful moment of dialogue and understanding for our students. We are most grateful to Imam Kauser for his visit and the extraordinary kindness he showed our students. We hope to have him visit again soon!“ said Deacon Ron Rizzuto.

Student-Athlete Alumni Reunion & Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony Friday April 5th, 2019 For over 85 years, the St. Edmund Prep High School family has taken great pride in its athletic program. First, the Tigers and now the Eagles, have fostered a successful tradition. Participating in sports and activities throughout high school has played an important role in helping so many alumni of St. Edmund develop a healthy mind, body, and spirit. Our studentathletes have developed pride in their school and made long-lasting relationships with their teammates and coaches. St. Edmund Prep would like to recognize the special role that athletics have played in our school’s history with our first ever Student-Athlete Alumni Reunion, to be held on Friday, April 5th at Inwood Country Club. This event will bring together graduates of St. Edmund who are linked by the common bond of their participation in the school’s athletic program. Inaugural run through the streets of Marine Park not dampened by rainy weather

Eagle Run 5K

Race Results by Category

On May 12th, St. Edmund Prep held its first ever 5K Eagle Run and it was a tremendous success! 109 runners braved the rain to show their Eagle Spirit, with the NYPD and Gerritsen Beach Vollies keeping everyone safe along the course. We couldn’t have done it without our sponsors, most especially the Calkin Sisters (Jacquelyn ’97, Jennifer ’99 and Linsey ’08) and the Caccamo family, (parents of recent alum Anthony ’18 and future graduate Emily ’21.) Despite the rain, it truly was a great time. Runners included current students, alumni, faculty and families, and the post-race (indoor) BBQ was a lot of fun. Now it’s time to start training for next year’s run. We’ll be racing down Avenue T again on Saturday, May 11, 2019. Save the date! For more Eagle Run 5K images visit www.flickr.com/stedmundprep

MAKING NEWS All Facebook Pages Are Not Alike... We are sure many of you are thrilled to reconnect with your high school classmates on Facebook…traveling down memory lane, sharing stories of silly antics, school traditions and seasoned teachers. It is one of the reasons many individuals enjoy Facebook – the opportunity to reconnect with old friends and reminisce about simpler times. However, we want you to use Facebook to reconnect with us, your alma mater, and the BEST way to do that is to like our official page “St. Edmund Preparatory High School” (@stedmundprep). This page will share with you a slice of life of St. Edmund today, a place to learn about alumni activities and events, and an opportunity to take pride in the accomplishments of your school. While you may enjoy your individual class page, St. Edmund High School does not administer these pages and is not able to share information with you there. We want to communicate with you directly, so please take the time to visit St. Edmund Preparatory High School, “like” and “follow” our page, and keep abreast of your school as it is today…we would love to have you back…on Facebook and on Ocean Avenue! Any questions? Contact the Development Team at 718-743-6100 ext. 5081. Hope to see your “comment” soon!
