A Message from Chairperson of the Board Dear Valued Friends and Family, Thirty-three years ago, five parents came together to create Spectrum for Living, an organization dedicated to providing the highest quality of care and services to intellectually and developmentally disabled adults in a compassionate and caring environment. Inspired by the unwavering commitment of the five founding parents, Spectrum for Living has, over the last three decades, expanded its broad array of services to serve more than 800 community and residential clients, while never compromising its core values. An organization driven by family involvement and commitment, Spectrum for Living has become one of New Jersey’s premier human services organizations, remaining at the forefront of advocacy, promoting and influencing the rights and opportunities for the disabled. The last few years for Spectrum have been a period of rapid expansion and growth. Two homes generously donated by founding parents were transformed into medical group homes that can now provide the highest level of nursing supports for individuals with complex medical conditions. In addition, we built a barrier free Adult Training Center in Ringwood to serve an increased number of community clients in the Northern Passaic area. Spectrum is currently preparing for dramatic changes as the State of New Jersey transitions from a contract reimbursement system to a fee for service model under Medicaid billing. While the financial impact of this change is unpredictable, Spectrum is committed to preserving its legacy and proud heritage by continuing to provide full access to services and supports of the highest quality that promote independence and dignity for every one of our clients. This is a core value of Spectrum for Living, non-negotiable under any circumstances. Spectrum wouldn’t be able to realize its many accomplishments without the support from the Board of Trustees, family members, donors and Spectrum’s dedicated staff. Although we have accomplished much, there is still so much more that needs to be achieved for both those we serve and thousands of others in need of services! Spectrum for Living Endowment The Spectrum for Living Endowment was established to ensure that the organization would have funding available in the event of a “rainy day”. It is a cash reserve available to help the organization during times of financial uncertainty. Endowments are usually set-up so that donors can make a restricted gift that acts in perpetuity, the interest from the investment is used to help non-profits, such as Spectrum for Living Development, meet their fiscal responsibilities. Your donation to the endowment can be made in the form of:
Bequest by will or living trust Gifts of securities Charitable gift annuity Charitable remainder trust Gift of retirement plan Gift of life insurance policy

Empowered by Employment Between volunteering at Care One Senior Living, a beauty salon, local dining halls, and even our Adult Training Centers, SCIP is also working after hours at Spectrum for Living’s headquarters in River Vale. SCIP stands for Spectrum Community Integration Program, which provides individual and group placements in competitive employment, as well as volunteer opportunities. At Spectrum’s corporate office, SCIP is responsible for cleaning the offices, bathrooms and kitchen. This includes washing floors, vacuuming and making sure the garbage is removed. It’s a lot of work to accomplish in one hour but the SCIP crew continuously leaves the office looking brand new, something they are proud to acknowledge. “If the staff is happy, then I am happy.” Jean says. Carl of Closter, Jean of River Vale, Sabrina of Bergenfield and Harry of Rockleigh are just a few of those involved with SCIP. They have been with the program ranging from one to three years and like others, have acquired skills that are sought after by employers. Aside from their determination and attention to detail, these members have a strong, common understanding of teamwork. Carl explains that when one crewmember falls short on garbage duty, another member will gladly pitch in to help get the job done. According to The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the percentage of working-age people with disabilities in the labor force is about one-third that of persons with no disability. Thanks to SCIP, these clients are preparing for jobs in the workforce that are suited to their abilities. Through similar programs throughout the United States, provider organizations are trying to increase the number of working persons with disabilities. As best put by Jean, SCIP is a program that “helps special people get jobs”. Carl would love to speak to those interested in learning more about SCIP and Harry asserts that they are prepared to work. The whole team agreed that the praise and feedback they receive about their performance from the office staff is the most rewarding part of their job. They also humbly boast that they are a well-mannered bunch, and it’s true, any employer would be lucky to have them on their team.

Achieving Independence through Physical Art Spectrum’s Central Recreation Program unearths the self -expression and creativity within those we serve, further enhancing their lives. The program provides opportunities for Spectrum residents and community clients to participate in a variety of activities. Karate, yoga and volleyball are just some of the ways clients are spending their time. All of these activities serve a meaningful purpose. Aside from exercise, learning Karate is an asset because it helps develop confidence. “If I have a problem with somebody, it gives me self-control”, Lia, a resident of River Vale Apartments explains. Yoga is also a profound resource for clients. Yoga has been proven to reduce stress, improve fitness and reduce risk factors for chronic diseases. For the last five years, clients attend their choice of karate or yoga on Monday nights. Maria, a yoga participant says she loves seeing her friends and instructors all while getting fit.

Volleyball is a sport where you can change the rules up a little bit, use a different ball for our clients and still have a competitive game” Recreation Coordinator, Steve Vahalla explains. These hobbies are all mediums that encourage healthy and independent lifestyles which clients were able to demonstrate at the latest Physical Arts Exhibition on May 18, 2015. Family, friends and staff were invited to the Teaneck Adult Training Center to watch participants show off their acquired skills. The Central Recreation program is not funded by the state; therefore Spectrum thanks our supporters for their generosity and helping our clients enjoy a fulfilling life.

Making the Difference In the world of fundraising; corporate and small business supporters alike are vital to an organization’s overall success. Throughout the years, Spectrum for Living has been fortunate to partner with many wonderful local and national companies to build lasting relationships. Many of our partners come to us first as volunteers. One such company is United Water. Every year groups of employees come to Spectrum from the Day of Giving program. They give of their time and talents to create gardens for our residents and/or paint homes that are in need of refurbishment. Over the years, United Water has made monetary donations to Spectrum which enabled us to provide vital services to those we serve. Other corporations assist us through sponsorships at events. For many years, Edgewood Properties in Piscataway, New Jersey has been the signature sponsor for our Walks. In addition, their employees have formed a terrific team and walk together in support of us every year. The Walks are just two of the events where we see many businesses supporting Spectrum. Marathon Foods donates hot dogs and Rockland Bakery provides the buns. Costco and Wal-Mart send snacks, while United Water brings the water. Our Poker Nights, Wine Tastings, Tricky Tray and Gala draw supporters from all over. Museums, galleries, boutiques and big stores all participate to provide us with exceptional donations. It is not just businesses that make the difference. The Knights of Columbus, Northern Valley Rotary, Boy & Girl Scouts of America and The Chodae Christian Church are just a few organizations that participate in raising money and awareness for Spectrum for Living. At Spectrum for Living we always speak about our success coming from our supporters. This has never been truer than it is now. We have board members introducing us to foundations who then provide us funding through grants. Families are helping us to identify companies that donate goods and services such as paint from Benjamin Moore and countertops from International Granite & Marble. Musicians are performing concerts in our honor and professional sports teams are hosting us. Every day we are moved by the generosity of those around us. We are indebted to all of you who support us in so many different ways. It is because of all of you that we continue to fulfill the mission of ensuring that every person with a developmental disability lives his or her life to their fullest ability.

Financial Report Every year we receive state, federal and county grants that are imperative to keeping our doors open and providing basic care. Most of the recreational programs and advocacy/supportive services that distinguish Spectrum are supplemental to funded operating costs, so we depend on donation to provide the level of care our founding parents envisioned and sought to preserve. We are steadfast in carefully prioritizing our commitment and ensuring that our program expenses far outweigh our administrative expenses.
