A Message from the Senior Director of Development Happy Holidays Everyone! As we enter the final month of 2016 we wanted to share with you all the wonderful things that have been happening at Spectrum for Living these past few months. This issue of the Spectacular is filled with the many ways everyone has been involved. One update that you should be aware of is the removal of a Cost of Living Increase from the New Jersey State Budget. This unfortunate turn of events means that we will be entering our 9th year without an adjustment to meet the growing demands of increased expenses. This puts a greater burden on Spectrum to find ways to maintain our budget. We will continue to keep you updated throughout the coming months and ask that you regularly check your email for Advocacy Alerts. These alerts are a call to action for you to help us put this and other critical issues before those who can best assist our programs. In the coming year we will be hosting a Gala to celebrate all of Spectrum’s successes. We are pleased to announce that State Senate President Stephen Sweeney will be the honoree. Please watch your mailboxes for further information. As always we thank you for your generosity and commitment to Spectrum for Living and the mission to provide opportunities to those with a developmental disability.

“An Evening of Dreams” Prom hosted for Residents and ATC Participants

On Friday, June 10th, 2016, Spectrum for Living hosted our first ever prom at the Teaneck ATC for our residents. Over one hundred guests from the group homes and supervised apartments attended the “Evening of Dreams” themed event. Prom attendees were treated to an outdoor cocktail hour complete with “mocktails", live music and the opportunity to have a formal portrait taken. After “mocktails”, guests were ushered inside and onto the dance floor where DJ Randi Rae got everybody moving and strutting their stuff on the red carpet. A delicious dinner and prom themed cakes completed the event. On Monday, June 13th, ATC participants were treated to the same prom, with one minor change–the theme was now a “Day of Dreams”. On behalf of everyone at Spectrum, we thank our generous donors, volunteers, staff, family and friends who helped make this idea become reality. Without you, none of this would have been possible. Our clients truly experienced an evening and day of their dreams.

Spectrum 5K Sprints in Northern & Central Jersey Spectrum for Living held 5K’s in both Northern and Central NJ this past October. Approximately 500 runners, walkers, and volunteers came together in support of Spectrum. The walks were held at Overpeck Park in Ridgefield Park and at Johnson Park in Piscataway. This was Spectrum’s first 5K sprint in Bergen County! In addition to many runners from the surrounding communities, our very own Self Advocate Group - The Voices walked the full 5K. It was wonderful to see our family members out supporting all the runners and walkers. The Spectrum residents took part by decorating t-shirts and cheering on the runners as they crossed the finish line. In Central NJ we had many costumed runners racing in the Spooky Sprint! Prizes for best costume were awarded in several categories. The Voices once again showed their support by completing a second 5K! We’re thrilled to announce that we raised over $45,000 from our 2016 Walks! A huge thank you to all of our sponsors, race participants, staff, and volunteers who made this event a success.
