A Message From Chairperson of the Board Dear Valued Friends and Family, Thirty-three years ago, five parents came together to create Spectrum for Living, an organization dedicated to providing the highest quality of care and services to developmentally disabled adults in a compassionate and caring environment. Inspired by the unwavering commitment of the five founding parents, Spectrum for Living has, over the last three decades, expanded its broad array of services to serve more than 800 community and residential clients, while never compromising its core values. An organization driven by family involvement and commitment, Spectrum for Living has become one of New Jersey’s premier human services organizations, remaining at the forefront of advocacy, promoting and influencing the rights and opportunities for the disabled. Spectrum is unique in its ability to deliver a broad range of community programs and support services, as well as varied residential options that can meet the needs of a medically fragile population. This is achieved through offering enhanced medical, nursing, and behavioral supports that can be modified to accommodate the needs of our consumers throughout their lifetimes. Our greatest benefit, however, is the dedication of Spectrum employees, who work tirelessly to meet the changing needs of our aging population, while at the same time helping to transition the many new consumers that have joined Spectrum’s family in the past year. We have seen Spectrum’s Development Department achieve great success over the past year through community grants, naming opportunities and increasing giving and contributions to advance Spectrum’s mission. Every day the way we use technology shifts, and at Spectrum we are continually changing with the times. In 2015 Spectrum for Living focused on redesigning our website. Our new website now serves as portal to all that is Spectrum. Visitors can search for available services, find job opportunities and make donations. We are now using the website to communicate with our supporters in an environmentally sustainable manner. On our website you can now read our newsletter, the Spectacular and our Annual Report, as well as keep apprised of other issues requiring your support and advocacy. In addition to the new webpage, we have increased our social media presence. Our Facebook and Twitter feeds have a combined following of over 1,200 followers. I am also pleased to announce that after many years of receiving no Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) from the State of New Jersey, Spectrum has successfully joined forces with our peer agencies and other trade organizations to influence the Senate and Assembly Budget Appropriation Committee to present a resolution for a 3% COLA to Governor Christie. We are all cautiously optimistic that our advocacy will pay off in the end, strengthening our resources and ability to further the quality of services we provide to our consumers. While we at Spectrum can celebrate our heritage and quality of services, we should never overlook as advocates the thousands of individuals either in need of services, underserved, or inappropriately placed in a living arrangement that is incompatible with their unique needs. With your support, Spectrum will move into the future as both a provider and advocate supporting the needs of the intellectually and developmentally disabled individual. Therapy Garden: A Work of Heart Residents at the Closter ICF are always expanding their skills and hobbies. However, the Therapy Garden located in their backyard is a favorite activity among everyone including the staff. The wheelchair accessible garden boxes feature a lively mix of cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes, eggplants, basil and many other delicious finds. According to the American Horticultural Therapy Association, this practice is widely used in a range of rehabilitative, vocational and community settings. “Techniques used in Horticultural Therapy are employed to assist participants to learn new skills or regain those that are lost. “HT” helps improve memory, cognitive abilities, task initiation, language skills, and socialization. In physical rehabilitation, HT can help strengthen muscles and improve coordination, balance, and endurance.” Not only does the garden allow residents to grow and maintain an immense garden, they also enjoy the fruits of their labor. From sauces, to taco night, and even desserts, staff and residents find a way to integrate their homegrown ingredients into a beautiful, healthy meal. Annual Fund vs. Endowment Fund: Do You Know the Difference? Gifts to the Annual Fund are donations of money, tangible items, volunteer time or other valuable resources that can be used immediately to support the mission of Spectrum for Living. While Endowment gifts are invested for long-term funding strategies, whose proceeds can be designated for use towards a specific purpose or during times of budgetary shortfalls.

Making the Difference: The Gift of Giving When you donate to Spectrum for Living, your donation does not go unnoticed, especially not by those we serve. In fact, it inspires them to pay it forward. Each year, during the holiday season, our participants are busy creating projects such as care packages for the military troops complete with toiletries, goodies and handmade cards. Or they can be found bundling up gifts for delivery to a Toys for Tots pick-up center. But their desire to help others does not end at the holiday season. Project Giving Tree is an idea born from Spectrum's card making events for local hospitals. In response to receiving such positive feedback, Recreation Coordinator, Samantha Simmons has sought out a new way to create cards for those in need of encouragement, in a way that appeals to improving the aesthetic quality of a hospital setting as well.
With help from Spectrum from the Heart Manager, Julia Smith, clients created a "giving tree" using mixed media which has become an art piece featured exclusively at Hackensack UMC at Pascack Valley. Aside from being an art piece, the handmade, six-foot tree also provides a way to display and extend cards of support to patients, visitors, or anyone else who may need them. Spectrum’s Adult Training Center participants make and deliver these cards monthly in order to keep the tree replenished. Thanks to your donations and support, and the inspiration it gives our clients to be charitable as well. Thank you for reminding our clients the meaning of giving back.

Financial Report Every year we receive state, federal and county grants that are imperative to keeping our doors open and providing basic care. Most of the recreational programs and advocacy/supportive services that distinguish Spectrum are supplemental to funded operating costs. We depend on donations to provide the level of care our founding parents envisioned and sought to preserve. We are steadfast in carefully prioritizing our commitment and ensuring that our program expenses far outweigh our administrative expenses.

A Year of First’s: Putting Ideas into Action It is commonly believed that progress is impossible without change. In 2015, the Development Team was inspired by that notion and decided it was time to hit the refresh button. When it comes to Spectrum for Living’s fundraising events, there were a few tweaks and even first’s that welcomed great success. For the first time in Spectrum for Living’s history, a 5K was added to the Annual Central New Jersey Walk. Not only was a 5K added, but a Halloween theme was also incorporated to attract individuals of all ages to participate in costume. The overwhelming amount of positive feedback sparked an Annual Spooky Sprint 5K which will be held once again at Johnson Park in Piscataway, NJ on Saturday, October 29, 2016. In addition, the Annual Northern New Jersey Walk will incorporate a 5K and children’s “fun run” and was relocated to Overpeck Park in Ridgefield Park, NJ. The event will be held on Saturday, October 15, 2016. Spectrum hopes that these changes will be more inclusive and enjoyable for prospective participants.
Another new event was introduced in November 2015. The Tricky Tray Fundraiser, held at Seasons, was a huge success selling out to over 300 guests. Hundreds of baskets were donated and raffled off while supporters enjoyed a three course dinner and open bar. Prizes included televisions, concert tickets, designer merchandise and much more. Everyone had a plethora of chances to win something amazing. Spectrum for Living is proud to bring back the Tricky Tray on Wednesday, September 21, 2016 at Seasons in Washington Township, NJ. Spectrum would like to thank all who lent their support and gave helpful feedback. We hope to see you again at the Walks/Run and Tricky Tray! 2015 Event Overview TEXAS HOLD ‘EM TOURNAMENT The Annual Poker Tournament was a great success raising $11,000! The event was held at the Ringwood Adult Training Center which was an excellent opportunity to expose Spectrum to those who may not be familiar with our organization. The grand prize winner took home $1,250.
ANNUAL GOLF CLASSIC 2015 2015’s Annual Golf Classic held at White Beeches Country Club in Haworth, NJ was another great success raising over $50,000. Sponsors included The Kimmerle Group, Bergen Brookside Auto Body, Sokol Behot and many others. We are looking forward to this year’s golf classic on Monday, June 6, 2016 which will also feature a tennis portion at the Haworth Country Club in Haworth, NJ.

SPOOKY SPRINT 5K The Central New Jersey Walk was revamped and turned into the Spooky Sprint 5K, drawing hundreds of runners and walkers of all ages. The event was such a hit that we’re bringing it back on Saturday, October 29, 2016 at Johnson Park in Piscataway. (Don’t forget your costumes!)
TRICKY TRAY The first annual Tricky Tray Fundraiser was held on Wednesday, November 18, 2015 at Seasons in Washington Township, NJ. Hundreds of baskets were raffled off thanks to generous donors like Bergen County Camera, PNC Arts Center, the New Jersey Devils and many more. Driving into our Future Thanks to a generous grant from the Division of Developmental Disabilities of New Jersey, Spectrum for Living was able to purchase 10 new vans. Did you know? Spectrum has 145 vans on the road and average about 1.5 million miles per year throughout the entire Spectrum fleet. 65 of our vehicles are equipped with audio / video camera and we are working toward a goal of 100% with cameras.
Spectrum for Living’s Training Department is excited to announce that our Defensive Driving course will now be offered to the public, not just Spectrum staff members. Who can benefit? ALL drivers! First responders, health care providers and any individual interested in reducing insurance payments or traffic violations are encouraged to register for the course. In the future, it is our hope to offer our other training courses such as Sensitivity and CPR & First Aid to the local community. Corporate Giving Home Improvement In 2015, the presence of corporate giving made our group homes a lovelier place to live.
In July 2015, 13 volunteers from Benjamin Moore graciously gave their time and painted the interior of the Westwood Group Home, giving it a much needed makeover. Areas painted included the kitchen, dining room, living room and hallways throughout the home that accommodates six individuals. The yellow and peach paints, which Benjamin Moore also donated, were chosen by the group home residents themselves! This particular residence had not been painted since Spectrum acquired the home 16 years ago. Thank you Benjamin Moore!
Thanks to the Eastern Bergen County Board of Realtors and Rebuilding Together Bergen County, the Bergenfield Respite residence was given much needed repairs in April of 2015. From painting the interior and deck, to other fixes around the home, volunteers generously gave their time to make this home a special place for our respite clients. Our Family Respite Program provides a safe, secure, and warm environment for persons whose families need to take a break from care as it is not unusual for families to go years without a vacation, or even a weekend off. Services can be provided in the person’s home or in a community based site such as the Bergenfield location. Later in the year they also gave Spectrum for Living $2,600 for new carpets at Rockleigh Apartments. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this project!

Google Chromebook Technology Last year, Spectrum for Living was graciously awarded a $50,000 grant from the Alfiero and Lucia Palestroni Foundation to be used to improve technology at the Group Homes and Adult Training Centers that we operate. In preparation for the new Fee for Service programs that the state has instituted, provider organizations like Spectrum will be required to utilize special software that will record time spent on each consumer regarding all their daily care. As part of the new programs, the grant provided for the purchase of multiple Chromebooks and laptops for each center. The Foundation was founded by Mr. and Mrs. Palestroni to support such charitable organizations and persons that provide assistance to those who have “one strike against them,� and, in particular, children who are physically or psychologically disabled or handicapped. We thank the Alfiero and Lucia Palestroni Foundation for their incredible gift.
