A Message from the CEO

Dear Friends: What has been a guiding principle and practice of Spectrum for Living since its inception is to provide to its consumers a dignified life style not compromised, restricted or viewed indifferently because of their disability. Rather we are to focus on creating quality of life opportunity for them to apply their capability and interest in ways that promote personal growth and wellbeing. It is the moral vision of the founding parents that has enabled those thereafter to embrace achievement and endure challenges and changes with intent to succeed. Thanks to the hard work of our dedicated staff, contributions from our families, advocates, and community organizations, Spectrum continues our devoted commitment to the many of hundreds of consumers we serve and their family members who place trust in our care. The past year highlights tremendous success expanding our community outreach while enhancing our programs and services. New partnership amongst Board of Trustees, family members, and stakeholders has come together to donate time, resources, and talent in support of our important mission. Despite contractual constraints, Spectrum has made a concerted effort to keep overhead low while leveraging the support from an expanded donor base to meet the diverse and unique needs of our consumers. Over the past year some of our many accomplishments include: • Development of a “Job Development Program” for participants at Spectrum’s Adult Training Centers • Development of a “Healthy Living for Special Lives Program” for both community and residential clients • Home improvements to include renovation/repairs/furnishings • Funding for Spectrum’s companionship program providing staff coverage during resident hospitalization • Purchasing of adaptive equipment • Holiday gifts for Spectrum’s dedicated staff • Updating our technology systems to meet future demands • “Leaves of Love” campaign comprised of hundreds of generous donors. The success of our community outreach and networking has enabled Spectrum to increase the value of services and provide consumers opportunity for personal growth, independence, and self-fulfillment. As Spectrum undergoes uncertain times affected by yet another year without a Cost of Living increase in addition to a dramatic shift from a traditional State contract to a Medicaid-Fee for Service System of reimbursement, the budgetary impact on agency services is unclear. Perhaps more than ever before a collective investment from Spectrum’s Board, Staff and Family, and Constituents built on commitment, support, and an unwavering regard to sustain the many blessings that has become the very nature of Spectrum is critical. I thank you for wholeheartedly being part of Spectrum for Living as we move forward to so much more!

Mark Michelson President/CEO

A Message from Chairperson of the Board

Dear Friends, Families and Partners, For more than three decades, Spectrum for Living has changed the lives of hundreds of families throughout New Jersey facing the challenge of caring for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Over the years, Spectrum has grown from a single residential facility in Closter, New Jersey to operating numerous residential and community programs in four counties that serve more than 800 consumers. Even as the agency has expanded over the years, it has never wavered from its core value of providing the highest quality of care and services to developmentally disabled adults in a compassionate and caring environment. Over the years, Spectrum for Living has become one of New Jersey’s most highly respected human services organizations, delivering a broad range of services that can meet the needs of a unique and medically fragile population that cannot be served by other organizations. Spectrum’s success has been dependent on the support, commitment and close involvement of our families, a model that was established by the agency’s five founding families more than three decades ago. The continued support of our families is more important than ever as we face the dual challenges of rising costs and inadequate funding in an environment where we compete with other not-for-profits for every dollar donated by foundations and corporations. Spectrum for Living’s greatest asset is its workforce, and especially its hundreds of dedicated direct care workers who serve our consumers with dignity and compassion. Like many human services organizations throughout New Jersey, Spectrum currently faces the monumental challenge of offering our workers a level of compensation that demonstrates our commitment to them in the same way they show on a daily basis their tireless dedication to our vulnerable and fragile consumers. It is only through the support of Spectrum families that we can overcome this hurdle and continue to provide the highest level of quality services as conceived by our five founding families. One of the most important roles of our extended Spectrum family is to serve as advocates for the developmentally disabled. Unless we raise our voices to our local and state legislators, our consumers will continue to be overlooked and forgotten. For many years, Spectrum and other human services agencies have received no Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) from the State of New Jersey, jeopardizing our ability to continue to deliver the highest level and quality of services. Under these circumstances, complacency is not an option. The only solution is active and consistent messaging to our elected officials. Moreover, the individual support we receive from our stakeholders is invaluable in enabling us to continue our important mission. On behalf of Spectrum for Living, I thank each and every parent, sibling, family member, friend, neighbor, vendor, business partner, foundation, corporation and other benefactor who supported us over the past year. It is your dedication, passion and commitment that enables us to continue to change lives on a daily basis. Only with your continued support can Spectrum move into the future and face the challenges ahead. I look forward to facing the future together. Respectfully,

Christine LaRocca

Chairperson Spectrum for Living Board of Trustees

Looking at the 2016 Annual Report brought back so many memories of the past year and all the great things that were accomplished at Spectrum for Living. You, our supporters, did an outstanding job of showing us that you believe in our work, our mission and, most importantly, in those who we serve. In 2016, every time we put out a call to help - you answered! We started with our first ever Prom and the overwhelming response truly warmed our hearts. We received donations of food, flowers, dresses and suits, even a red carpet! The outcome of your generosity was an event not to be forgotten. You gave our participants memories to last a lifetime! As we progressed through the year we had some amazing friends from local banks step up in the form of grants to help make much needed improvements at many of our facilities. Without their support we would not have been able to replace bathrooms, paint rooms, or even lay new flooring. We asked, they answered! Later in the year we were the benefactors of not one, but two major foundation grants. The Robert Wood Johnson Community Presidents Grant Fund of the Princeton Area Community Foundation afforded us the ability to do something we have wanted to try for a long time – create a Healthy Living Program for people with special needs. The success of this program is being felt throughout the entire organization as our residents, ATC participants, and staff join together to get fit and choose healthy lifestyles. The second grant was from our friends at Wal-Mart for the inception of an enhanced Training for Employment Program. Walk through an ATC and you will find attendees busy working on iPads as they learn new skills to help them find employment. And of course there are the donors who give individually for whom we are especially grateful. Your gift makes the difference in the everyday life of someone with a developmental disability. Your gift keeps the lights on during recreation. Your gift provides arts and crafts supplies. Your gift is the gift that makes a difference every day. So I thank you, as always, for being there when we put out the call. I look forward to seeing many of you this year and I hope you will continue to be there when we call next. Thanks so much for your continued support.

Senior Director of Development

Financial Report

Every year we receive state, federal and county grants that are imperative to keeping our doors open and providing basic care. Most of the recreational programs and advocacy/supportive services that distinguish Spectrum are supplemental to funded operating costs. We depend on donations to provide the level of care our founding parents envisioned and sought to preserve. We are steadfast in carefully prioritizing our commitment and ensuring that our program expenses far outweight our administrative expenses.

An Evening of Dreams

12

On June 10, 2016, Spectrum for Living hosted our first ever prom at the Teaneck ATC for our residents. Over one hundred guests from the group homes and supervised apartments made their way down the red carpet at the “Evening of Dreams” event. Prom attendees were treated to an outdoor cocktail hour complete with “mocktails”, live music and the opportunity to have their formal photograph taken. After “mocktails”, guests were ushered inside and onto the dance floor where they danced the evening away. A delicious dinner and desserts completed the event. On June 13, ATC participants were treated to the same prom, with one minor change–the theme was now a “Day of Dreams”.

The Art of Spectrum

Every fall the Teaneck ATC transforms into an Art Gallery for 24 hours. Easels open up, shelves become showcases and the walls are filled with beautiful and creative artwork. As the doors to the exhibit open, guests enter with great anticipation. They know they are about to be awed! For a full year there is a flurry of activity within the Adult Training Centers as Julia Smith, our resident artist and Manager of Spectrum from the Heart Store, works with the budding artists at each facility to design their pieces. Using all types of medium, the artists take their creativity to a whole new level. Their artwork has been showcased at the Westwood Library in Westwood, NJ and at the County Building in Hackensack, NJ. This program is one of many supported through your donations.

Spectrum 5K Sprints Spectrum Sprint October 15, 2016 Overpeck Park Spooky Sprint October 29, 2016 Johnson Park Spectrum for Living held 5K’s in both Northern and Central New Jersey this past October. Approximately 500 runners, walkers, and volunteers came together in support of Spectrum. The walks were held at Overpeck Park in Ridgefield Park and at Johnson Park in Piscataway. This was Spectrum’s first 5K sprint in Bergen County. In addition to many runners and walkers from the surrounding communities, our very own Self Advocate Group - The Voices walked the full 5K. It was wonderful to see our family members out supporting the runners and walkers. Spectrum residents who chose not to walk took part by decorating t-shirts and cheering on the runners as they crossed the finish line. In Central Jersey, we had many costumed runners racing in the Spooky Sprint. Prizes for best costume were awarded in several categories. The Voices once again showed their support by completing a second 5K. We’re thrilled to announce that we raised over $45,000 from our 2016 Sprints/Walks! A huge thank you to all of our sponsors, race participants, staff, and volunteers who made this event a success.

Thank you to all our 2016 supporters. If your name does not appear on the donor list, or there is a misspelling, please let us know. We strive to ensure every donor is listed and acknowledged for their gift to Spectrum.

Spectrum for Living’s Giving Tree

To remind us of your kindness and generosity, we created the Spectrum for Living Giving Tree in 2016. For every donation of $100 or more that we received, we wrote your name on a leaf and attached it to the tree! The tree is displayed in the River Vale Corporate Office.

The Value of Volunteers At the heart of every organization, there are a group of people who silently commit to making a difference every day. They don’t get paid when asked to lend a hand. They don’t look for glory or awards. They take great pride in what they do and they are loved, as friends, by many. WE CALL THEM VOLUNTEERS! Each year, over 120 people serve the needs of Spectrum for Living as volunteers in one capacity or another. Some are Friendly Visitors, heading to the residences week after week to play games, listen to music, and share a coffee or just chat. Our residents love when they come because they know these dedicated people bring fun and excitement. Church groups make up another branch of our volunteer program. Some come to sing & dance with our consumers while others help bake cookies or garden. Whatever activity they do, they bring lots of action to the facilities. Corporate volunteers, those from local businesses and corporations, call us throughout the year offering to assist in jobs that may not directly involve those we serve. Some choose to paint program areas or rooms in the residences, others help clean gardens, build raised beds, and plant flowers. Some even enjoy detailing our fleet of vans. Whatever task they choose, they certainly leave at the end having made a difference. No matter how someone comes to know Spectrum, most volunteers keep coming back. We are so grateful for all that they bring to the organization, to the staff, and to those we serve. They are invaluable!

Giving Back True believers in the teaching that you get back what you give; Spectrum’s consumers are active participants in the communities that we serve.

Every Spring Spectrum partakes in a program at the Meadowlands Environment Center to build and place nesting boxes for swallows.

The Edison ATC delivered meals to seniors through the Meals On Wheels program. The monthly outing was much anticipated and the clients loved seeing their senior friends.

Another fun day was putting together Care Packages for the Troops.
