HAPWARD IN ACTION: @ the Alley

Collegiate Spartan bowling got off to a great start this year. A very young and inexperienced team was coached extremely well right from the get go to make them who they are today. Jack, still as perfect as ever, bowled a 299! The approaches, swings, and hooks on the balls are getting more precise for each and every bowler. The stats only got better and better. People who started with only 60 pin averages are finishing in the hundreds. Obviously, the team had its rough spots but came out stronger than ever because of it. After a year of such achievement for everyone, I can happily say this was a very productive season. By this time next year, if this progress continues, your Collegiate Spartan bowling team will be going to state! Congrats to all of the bowlers. Finish off strong guys.

SNOW DAY “POLICY” . . . BY MAX CRADDOCK There is a major issue in Collegiate’s handling of snow days and it needs to change. I’m not talking about the missing school part; I love putting off homework, sleeping in, sledding down hills (mounds), and getting hypothermia while shoveling your driveway as much as the next person. I feel the issue lies within the immense amount of time it takes for the school to actually cancel school. Take last Wednesday’s snow day for example. We were on the verge of an ice-age like blizzard and everyone knew that we most likely wouldn’t be having school the next day. The snow started to fall around 7 A.M and, according to forecasts, would continue to fall until 4 A.M Wednesday morning. Around 8 P.M things started to get interesting. As the snow fell down the closings piled up. Derby, Clearwater, Wellington, Andale, and Goddard were out by 8:30. 9:00 brought the closings of Andover and Trinity. 9:15 came with cancellations for Wichita Catholic Schools, USD 259 and The Independent School. By 9:30 every school within a 100 mile radius of Wichita had been cancelled. 9:45? No word from Collegiate. 10:00? Nothing. 10:15? Nope. At 10:34, on Parker Smitherman’s Facebook status was when Collegiate students first received confirmation that we had no school, thanks to a comment from Mrs. Smitherman. It wasn’t until 11:15 that my house received the confirmation call from Collegiate saying that school was cancelled. This call also happened to wake both my parents who unfortunately do not have snow days. My only question is why did Collegiate wait so long to cancel school? Did the forecast really change that much from 9:00 to 10:30? Was the snow supposed to magically disappear? I don’t want to begin to speculate why Collegiate waited so long to cancel school, because most likely my theories would be totally wrong. All I’m asking is for Collegiate to make a decision on future snow days before my bed time.

An Interview with Diving Legend: Adam Lower By: Ellen Healy SV: Is it lonely being the only diver at Collegiate? BY SERJAY SAMBROS

AL: (Laughs) No, I dive with all the divers in Wichita, at North

Game Dev Story

West high school.

This 99 cent game will keep you entertained and away from school work for many hours, potentially days. This simple game is easy to play and incredibly rewarding, but I still do not know why it is so fun.

SV: What do you love most about diving? AL: I love flipping and learning cool new dives, which I thought I wouldn’t have been able to do. SV: How does it compare to tumbling?

Plants vs Zombies If you haven't played PvZ yet, it is never to late to enjoy this simple tower defense game. Recommeding PvZ is kind of like telling someone about Angry Birds, but if you haven't played yet go ahead and download the $2.99 game. Zengaku It's a 99 cent combination of sudoku and some other japanese game "kakuro" . I'm pretty sure combining sudoku with any other addictive game is the game development equivalent of cooking crack. If you already enjoy sudoku, I would definitely try it out. Just don't Zengaku and drive! Space Miner: Space Ore Bust The $2.99 price tag is well worth this expansive asteroid type space shooter. The 3D graphics and interesting combination of RPG elements makes this game a keeper. The customization and fun gameplay keep you coming back for more. Star Dunk This free app is all about shooting baskets in space. The gameplay is alright, but the online multiplayer drives you to reach a higher score just to beat everyone else. This game is pretty easy to pick up and play when you have a few free minutes, and since its free, it's definitely worth the download

AL: You wear a lot less clothing, and you get wet. SV: What is a normal practice like? AL: Getting there late, stretching, and then diving for the rest of the two hour practice.Sometimes at the end of practice we do both abs and legs workout. SV: What’s your favorite trick? AL: Back 1 ½ somersault with 2 ½ twist. (Back flip, twisting 2 ½ times, and then diving in.) Or a Front 1 ½, 2 twist. (Front flipping, with 2 twists, and then diving in.) SV: List some of your accomplishments. AL: I won 11th place at State my sophomore year, won 2nd place last year (my junior year), and I hope to win this year. (nervous sighhhhhh) SV: How do you get ready? (Mentally/ physically?) AL: I talk, a lot. I socialize with the other divers so I don’t get nervous. And right before I go to dive I mock the dive I am about to perform. SV: How long have you been diving? AL: For four years!

An Interview WCS Diving Legend: Adam Lower

Texting While Driving By Zach Alvarez

Cont.

SV: Do you plan on diving in college? AL: For fun, but I won’t continue competing. SV: What do you least like about diving? AL: It’s so cold, and I shiver and shake the entire two hours of practice. SV: Are you nervous for State? AL: Yes, because I want to do my very best. There are eleven dives per competition, and it is very easy to mess up one dive, which could mess up the whole meet. SV: How do you prepare for diving when you are offseason? AL: Diving! And I do leg and abs workouts. SEE VIDEO OF ADAM DIVING catchitkansas.com “ADAM LOWER EYES STATE CHAMPIONSHIP AFTER SHATTERING RECORD.”

GOOD LUCK AT STATE ADAM! Rhys & Sam, too.

On January 1st, 2011, the city of Kansas put the Texting While Driving Law into effect. The exact words of the bill are as follows: “A person who is operating a motor vehicle on a public road or highway is prohibited from “texting”, using a wireless communications device to write, send, or read a written communication.” The bill goes on to define “wireless communications device” as any type of device that sends or receives messages, but excludes voice-operated devices. So what is the penalty for breaking the Texting While Driving Law? The answer: a $60 fine tacked onto a potential Inattentive/Reckless Driving charge. Also, if a motorist causes the death of another person while breaking this law, the state of Kansas has the ability to charge the offender with Involuntary Vehicular Manslaughter. The penalty for such a charge is three to fifteen years in prison, with no possibility of parole until one year after incarceration.

PAPER TWEET: Featuring Coach Fiegel. By Jake Barrett Q: What is the deal with the white “Catch- it- Kansas” pencils? A: You know, what I would have to say is that is one of those mysteries that’s meant to be a mystery.

Supergran! By Jake Barrett Yep that’s right, but this super granny doesn’t have any actual powers to bash the bad guys. She has something far better: a handbag. On Monday February 8, there was an attempt at a jewelry store robbery at the Michael Jones Jewelers in the central English town of Northampton, yes in England. Six sledgehammer-wielding crash helmet-wearing moped-riding (yep, that’s England) robbers started to bash open the windows of the jewelry store and steal the contents. Everybody was just going about their own business, but sneaking glances at the scene, and nobody took action against them. Luckily one man caught this spectacle on video. But suddenly an old woman comes sprinting across the street toward the robbers armed only with her purse. They don’t pay any attention to her until they are beaten relentlessly by the granny. Now comes the funny part: they ran. All six of them jumped on a moped and tried to get away. One pair even fell off their moped out of sheer fear, only to be struck by the unforgiving handbag once more. Finally the police come and the security window shutters to the jewelry store close, and the two men are apprehended. All because of this super granny’s heroic actions. She is proud of what she did, but she thinks herself now to be foolish to try to do what she did. Supergran had no regrets though, and stated that “they had to be stopped.” But now she is giving up her life of a superhero and asks the media be left in peace. So long Supergran! Your righteous fury, and handbag, will be missed dearly by the citizens of Northampton. YouTube: Old Lady beats up Robbers.

Lindsey Wells interviewed by Tara Kneller 10 Stars! Out of 5. ***SPOILER ALERT Documentary Style Tell me about the movie. Starts out with showing different clips from you tube ‘like’ funny ones. Then they show concert scenes vs. 12 yr old Justin’s Youtube videos when was under privileged, I love himmmm! Probably the rising action would be when days before his biggest concert ever at Madison Square Garden he loses his voice and is veryyyy scared. Sold out Madison Square Garden in 22 mins… Climax would be his concert, which he did amazing at it. Do you like his new hair? I think he looks good no matter what his hair looks like But do you miss his signature hair? I like everything about him, however he wants it to be. What do you think about JB and Selena Gomez? I like her, if he was dating Miley Cyrus I would be very upset… He is very talented and no one could say that he is not until they see the movie. AND if they still say he’s not then they are just jealous!

Lead and Succeed

Top 5 Things to Remember By Diana Kim We all have those days where we just zone out during that history class and just think “I can’t wait for that party on Friday” or “I can’t wait to watch Jersey Shore when I get home.” Stop zoning out during class! Just remind yourself that all of this junk will pay off one day. Here are some things to help you out with the rest of your high school life. 1. Take time and figure out what you like to do. Dream and imagine your ideal career that you see yourself doing in a few years. Your ideal profession can differ from being a lawyer or a pro football player. There are many possibilities in the world that you can go after. Go to the college career center in the office so they can help you find a great way to plan out your future. 2. Do your homework. Believe it or not, homework is important. Most of my friends think that homework is only a small part of our grades and that quizzes and tests are the important ones. There are two things wrong with this statement. First there are a lot more homework than quizzes and tests, which means that at the end of second semester, the homework will add up and destroy your grade. Second, you NEED homework to study for quizzes and tests, so both ways you lose if you don’t do homework. It really helps doing homework. Trust me. 3. Don’t pretend your sick because you want to skip a quiz. Admit it, all of us have done this sometime in our lives. It could’ve been in middle school or maybe even just last week. From firsthand experience, you can easily get more stressed from being “sick”. Just one day can bring you down, from missing a quiz or important notes, you should always try to go to school. And just to remind you from a new rule, we have to finish our missed homework within two days... which basically means that you’re doomed if you’re a procrastinators. Unless your a smart student, you should be fine. But if you’re are a complete procrastinator... good luck... Other than that, just try not to be “sick.” 4. Get your sleep! One important thing most high schoolers (and even adults) tend to overlook is their sleep time. According to the AASM (American Academy of Sleep Medicine), the average person should not be having eight, but nine hours of sleep a night. Getting sleep seriously does improve your performance at school. Not only does sleep help with your performance, but it also helps with your mood. After a great night of sleep, your body and your mind is refreshed completely to take on the day according to the AASM. So log off facebook.. now... and start catching up on some sleep! ... Or just start begging Mr. Ashbrook to start classes at 9:00 AM and end at 3:30 or something. 5. Time Management. The most important skill, in my opinion, is time management. You could be volunteering, working out, doing baseball or tennis, or maybe even working. These are all great things to success. But if you volunteer the whole day and not do your homework or study for that algebra quiz, you’re screwed. So if you could just plan to volunteer maybe two hours a day, that leaves a perfect time to study and work out. Don’t tell yourself “I didn’t have enough time” or “I was too tired” that just shouts out that you didn’t use your time perfectly the day before. But there are definitely days that teachers pile on homework. So just skip practice or volunteering just for that day. It’s only one day, I’m sure they’ll understand! So basically time management plays a big role in life, whether your a high schooler or an adult.
