Meet the Person at The Meadows Feature article by Victor Cabiles (MBA/MGM) The Meadows Racetrack and Casino on Racetrack Road, in Washington, Pennsylvania is undoubtedly the best place in the area for the treatment of ADG (Adult Gambling Boredom). The place has more than 3,000 slot machines and close to 90 table games, including poker tables. Also, it offers various promotions, which are customized for each player who has a player’s card. If you live in this neck of the woods, you ought to be very familiar with The Meadows. You may have visited there for a number of reasons such as bowling, dining, celebrating a special occasion, an event (for example, boxing or a concert), or gambling. Risk-takers and entrepreneurs/business owners (aka gamblers) enjoy going to The Meadows for one great reason. It was voted as the #1 casino in all of Pennsylvania, based on a survey of casino patrons conducted by visitPAcasinos.com, in June 2015. In my case, I wanted to learn more about the person who runs this place of entertainment and recreation 24/7. So, Mr. Don Hodor (Executive Director of the Southpointe Chamber of Commerce) and I set up a lunch interview with the person who keeps The Meadows running as smoothly as it can, and as humanly possible: Mr. Sean Sullivan – Vice President and General Manager. The following are some of the key highlights of the lunch interview with Mr. Sullivan:

When not wearing the hat of the Vice President and General Manager of The Meadows Racetrack and Casino, Mr. Sean Sullivan enjoys playing golf. Mr. Sullivan and his wife of 25 years live in the Washington County area. They have two boys: one is 19, and the other is 21 years old.

Mr. Sullivan was born in Los Angeles, California.

He graduated from the University of the Pacific, and started his career in the casino business as an analyst, in the 1980’s. The man has a ton of confidence: he just walked in the casino property, and asked to be a Director of the Hotel!

In 1983, he worked for The Sands Casino Resort/Hotel in Las Vegas, lived on the property, and enjoyed it!

Back then, gamblers from Mexico and the Middle East were the predominant customers of Las Vegas casinos. [Where they got their moolah… Your guess is as good as mine….]

Time went by, and before he knew it, he was working for the Cannery Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada as the Vice President and General Manager of The Meadows, here in the beautiful County of Washington, Pennsylvania.

When asked to which he attributes the #1 rating (referenced above), he said “the employees”, without any pause or hesitation. He mentioned that The Meadows’ employees have a great work ethic; they get support and training; and they are paid relatively well (with basic pay + tips). In addition, he stated that The Meadows is most likely to have the “loosest slots” of all casinos, with jackpots paid in 2015 totaling to almost $117M.

Regarding his management/leadership style, he prefers to “coach rather than manage”.

Like many businesses, around 70% of The Meadows’ revenues/profits come from the top 30% of its customers – the “heavy players”.

10 He considers The Rivers Casino to be The Meadows’ biggest competitor, although the above-referenced

survey did not even have The Rivers in the top three casinos.

Regarding the reported sale of the casino for $440M, he said the property has not been sold yet. The parties involved are still making amendments to the sale.

12 He is most definitely excited about The Meadows’ new event center, where shows (including trade

shows), concerts, weddings, and other events can be held at a very competitive pricing. I gleaned from the interview that Mr. Sullivan knows all the “ins and outs” of running a very complex and constantly changing/evolving business like The Meadows. He is fully aware of upcoming competitors such as online casinos. “The Person at the Meadows” is a total pro and completely deserves his title: Vice President and General Manager.
