Our Purpose and mission Our Statement of Purpose Special Olympics, Incorporated is a worldwide program of sports training and athletic competition open to individuals with intellectual disabilities regardless of their abilities. The International Olympic Committee has granted its official recognition to Special Olympics, Incorporated.

Our Mission The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

Our Vision Special Olympics New Jersey will be the premier non-profit sports organization worldwide, known for excellence and innovation in providing opportunities that enrich the lives of its athletes, their families and society as a whole.

Athlete Eligibility Until recently, eligibility in Special Olympics programs was designed to begin with the eight-year-old who was identified by an agency or professional as having one of the following conditions: intellectual disability; a cognitive delay as determined by standardized measures such as intelligence quotient or other generally accepted measures; or a closely related developmental disability, i.e., functional limitations in both general learning and adaptive skills. The Young Athlete Program recently was created to reach the two-and-a-half to seven-year-old and teach the basics of sports movement. The program is fundamental in the preparation of youngsters for standard Special Olympics participation. There is no cost to participate in Special Olympics; however, all prospective athletes must register.

For more information about athlete eligibility, visit www.sonj.org.

Dear Athletes, Family Members, Coaches, Volunteers and Sponsors, We proudly welcome you to the 2012 Special Olympics New Jersey Winter Games! These 2012 Games will showcase athletes who have achieved performance levels beyond expectations. From the very first years of novice alpine events in the 1970s to the advanced downhill participants who will be competing at these 2012 Games, we all will witness the superior progress made by our athletes in winter sports . . . and we all are invited to be part of the celebration. More than 300 athletes will compete in the sports of Alpine Skiing, Cross Country Skiing, Figure Skating, Snowboarding, Snowshoeing and Speed Skating. And every coach who committed to the success of these athletes, every family member who supported their efforts and every volunteer that helped to conduct these Games, will share in an experience of a lifetime. Thank you to all who will make these a memorable Games for our athletes. Special Olympics New Jersey extends our sincere appreciation to our host sites: Mountain Creek, Vernon; Skylands Ice World, Stockholm; and Richard Stockton College, host of this year’s Floor Hockey State Tournament. Your commitment to our athletes is unprecedented and we thank you. We also extend our gratitude to the hundreds of knitting and crocheting communities who helped make our newest tradition, the 2012 Special Olympics USA Scarf Project, come alive. Because of their scarf donations, we are able to witness an amazing sight: our athletes, coaches and volunteers adorned in handmade, navy and red-colored scarves, a living symbol of unity, support and community. And thank you to our Law Enforcement Community and the many sponsors, foundations and individuals that allow for us to conduct these Games totally free of charge for our athletes. Your support is very much appreciated. On behalf of Special Olympics New Jersey and our Board of Directors, we congratulate the families of our athletes and wish the competitors of these 2012 Winter Games the very best of luck! Sincerely,

Donald Slaght

facts & figures Special Olympics New Jersey is a non-profit organization authorized and accredited by Special Olympics, Incorporated and the Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. Foundation. Special Olympics New Jersey provides year-round sports training and Olympic-type competition in 24 sports for more than 22,000 persons with intellectual disabilities in the state. More than 20,000 volunteers participate statewide. Special Olympics New Jersey provides sports training to athletes through local schools, agency and community programs that compete on the Area (county), Sectional and Chapter (state) levels in any, or all, of four sports seasons. All competitions are conducted by certified sports officials in compliance with the National Governing Body sports rules. Training and certification programs prepare volunteers at all levels to train athletes and conduct competitions.

Special Olympics New Jersey employs a staff of 41 full-time and part-time employees at the Chapter office and Sports Complex in Lawrenceville, and is governed by a 22-member volunteer Board of Directors. Fundraising is the tool that supports the extensive volunteer management system which provides more than 160 competitive events year-round, all free of charge to participating athletes. Over 98% of the funds raised are through corporate sponsorships, individual contributions, special events and campaigns, all managed by staff and board members.

Participation opportunities offered beyond the traditional Special Olympics programs include Unified Sports速, a program that pairs community volunteers with Special Olympics athletes for practices and competitions. Unified Sports速 provides additional volunteer opportunities to members of the community while introducing Special Olympics athletes to community-based sports.

snowboarding The sport of Snowboarding, a cross between skateboarding and skiing, was developed in this country in the late 1960s. By 2000, Snowboarding was the fastest growing sport in the U.S. with more than 7.2 million people participating. Alpine Snowboarding involves maneuvering the snowboard downhill and making clean, smooth turns. The sensation of Alpine Snowboarding is unlike skiing and unique in sensation.

GIANT SLALOM

SUPER G

Slalom courses have the most gates through which athletes must pass. Quick, tight turns are key to success.

A longer course than slalom, giant slalom is a test of speed and turning skills as snowboarders pass through fewer gates, set further apart.

This is the speed event among snowboarders as they are challenged to ride between widely spaced gates with few turns over a longer course allowing for more speed

Congratulations to all the athletes competing in The 2012 Special Olympics Winter Games.

snow shoeing In Snowshoeing terms, the “float” is the total pounds the shoes can carry. Powdery snow conditions require more “float” than wet, heavy snow. Athletes will use telescoping snow poles to maintain balance and power. To travel uphill, the “Kick Step” is an effective method that involves pushing the toe of the shoe vertically into the snow, pressing down in order to pack down the snow enough to support weight. Another technique is called “Herringbone,” where steps are taken at 45 degree angles.

In advanced “heats,” or competitions, Special Olympics Speed Skaters may reach speeds of 20 miles per hour. Special Olympics offers events for all levels of ability, including basic Speed Skating. The basic skills must be mastered before an athlete can advance to the longer races. In this sport, athletes are grouped to compete according to ability, age and gender. SPEED SKATING EVENTS
