ne foire d’art contemporain offre la possibilité à des galerie de présenter leurs artistes dans un nouvel environnement, voire dans un nouveau pays. C’est ainsi une manière de se confronter à un nouveau public et de découvrir le travail d’autres galeristes. A l’heure actuelle, une foire apparaît comme le rendez-vous nécessaire pour une galerie pour se positionner et positionner ses artistes, sur le marché de l’art contemporain. Nous avons donc décidé de proﬁter de l’émulsion créé par la Fiac en ce mois d’octobre, pour inviter à SLICK des galeries françaises, américaines, italiennes et anglaises. Nous voulons cette foire emprunte de la passion de ses acteurs. Nous la souhaitons étonnante et pleine de découvertes pictuales, sculpturales, photographiques mais aussi dans les domaines de l’art vidéo et de l’art numérique. Nous avons en effet décidé de dédier un vaste espace, en accés libre, à des projections d’œuvres vidéo et des installations numériques, auquelles participent les galeries mais aussi les deux institutions françaises que sont Le Fresnoy et Le Cube. Enﬁn, nous espérons par cette initiative, sans prétention mais avec conviction, mettre en avant le dynamisme de la scène artistique contemporaine parisienne. Et nous remercions sincèrement tous ceux qui ont cru en SLICK, foire qu’ils ont soutenue par leur présence et leurs actions. Slickement vôtre, Aude de Bourbon Parme

he singularity of an art fair is that it allows galleries to take their artists on the road, so to speak, to show them in a new environment, perhaps even a new country, and therefore to face a different public. In the context of the fair, the galleries and artists are also in a position to discover other galleries and artists. The fair is therefore the meeting place of our contemporary times, almost required for galleries that wish to present themselves and their artists in the contemporary art scene. We therefore decided to take advantage of the prestige of the FIAC to invite twenty galleries from the UK, Italy, the US, France and Croatia to SLICK, a brand new contemporary art fair that celebrates its ﬁrst edition this October. We want this art fair to be marked by the passion of those involved. We want it to be astonishing, edgy and full of discoveries, in all mediums: sculpture, paintings, installations, and new media. For this purpose, we have dedicated a space exclusively for video and new media whereby select galleries as well as two French institutions – Le Cube and le Fresnoy – will be presenting a stunning program. We hope with this initiative, without pretension but with conviction, will bring forward the dynamic nature of the contemporary art scene in Paris. We would like to extend our thanks to Sonia Rykiel, Henry Claude Cousseau, Louis Nègre, Alain Fleisher and Caroline Bourgeois for their engagement, as well as all those who believed in SLICK art fair and helped with their actions or simply their presence. ’habitude, je m’adresse aux jeunes artistes - et notamment à ceux qui viennent au Fresnoy - Studio national, de tous les coins du monde depuis bientôt dix ans - en évitant de prendre en considération la question du marché de l’art, aﬁn que leurs ambitions ne soient pas faussées par d’autres objectifs que l’expression aussi émouvante, séduisante, et nouvelle que possible, de ce qui touche leur sensibilité. Je préfère leur parler du nécessaire professionnalisme dans la réalisation de leurs oeuvres que de stratégies de carrières. Si j’ai donc spontanément accepté d’être parmi les parrains de SLICK, c’est parce que j’y vois aussi une sorte d’école et d’apprentissage de la vie d’artiste, où l’on pourra assister à la naissance simultanée d’une génération d’artistes et d’une génération de galeristes. Même s’il est normal qu’une galerie renouvelle son « écurie » en accueillant des nouveaux venus, il s’est vériﬁé que les plus belles aventures sont celles des galeristes et marchands qui ont longuement accompagné les artistes qu’ils ont su découvrir à leurs débuts, étant eux-mêmes assez jeunes à cette époque. C’est aussi le cas pour les relations des artistes avec certains critiques d’art et certains conservateurs de musées. Il me semble donc tout à fait sain et souhaitable que, contre l’appétit de « chair fraîche » des grandes galeries internationales, des jeunes femmes et des jeunes gens passionnés par la diffusion des oeuvres d’art et par la défense des jeunes artistes, nouent des liens avec ces créateurs qui sont proches d’eux par l’âge, c’est-à-dire aussi par la sensibilité et par la culture, et qu’ils deviennent leurs interlocuteurs, leurs représentants, leurs complices. usually speak to young artists - and particularly to those who have been coming to FresnoyStudio National, from all over the world for almost ten years - by avoiding to take into consideration the question of the art market, in order for their ambitions not to be distorted by other objectives than the expression as touching, seductive, and new as possible, from what touches their sensibility. I would much rather talk about the necessary professionalism in the making of the work than about careers strategies. If I have therefore spontaneously accepted to be among the « godfathers » of SLICK, it is because I see it as a kind of school and an apprenticeship of the artist life, where we will be able to witness the simultaneous birth of a generation of artists and of a generation of gallerists. Even if it is normal for a gallery to renew its « stable » by welcoming new comers, the best adventures are those of galleries and dealers who have for a long time stayed with the artists they have discovered at the beginnings of their careers, being themselves rather young at the time. It is also the case with the relationship between artists and some art critics or some museums curators. It therefore seems to me very healthy and desirable that against the hunger for « fresh meat » of big international galleries, young women and young people passionate about the diffusion of art and about the promotion of young artists, unite with creators close to them by age, who also have the same sensibility and culture. es jeunes galeries, pour continuer d’exister et défendre leur jeunes artistes, ont besoin, tous comme les galeries plus établies, de l’espace commercial que constitue SLICK. On sait combien le marché s’est déplacé, ces dernières années, de la galerie vers la foire. Au point que sans celle-ci, celle là est tout simplement en danger de disparaître. Or il est de plus en plus difﬁcile pour une galerie émergeante, et donc sans référence, d’accéder aux « grandes » foires internationales. Les comités de sélection de ces dernières, pris en tenaille entre la multiplication des candidatures, et la surface forcément limitée de leurs expositions, font preuve d’exigences croissantes et sont amenés à être de plus en plus sélectifs. S’ils s’efforcent, de façon méritoire, de conserver par le biais de section spécialisées, un contact avec les « jeunes pousses » de l’art contemporains, ils sont bien obligés d’en écarter un nombre considérable. Il est donc tout à fait indispensable, qu’à coté, et non pas contre, les grandes foires, naissent et prospèrent des initiatives telles que SLICK. Et il est tout à fait impératif pour le collectionneur authentique, celui là qui recherche une exposition à la création contemporaine la plus innovante et l’émotion que procure toujours la découverte d’un discours d’artiste inédit, d’en parcourir les allées.

oung galleries, in order to exist and promote their young artists, need, like more established galleries, the commercial space that constitute contemporary art fairs. We know how much the market these past years has moved from the gallery to the fairs. Up to a point that without them, the gallery is simply threaten to disappear. However, it is more and more difﬁcult for an emergent gallery, without references, to access « big » international fairs. Selection comities, caught in a pincer movement between the increase in the number of candidates and the surface inevitably limited of their exhibitions, show higher requirements and are brought to be more and more selective in their choices. If they strive, in a meritorious way, to keep by the means of specialised sections, a contact with the contemporary art « youngsters », they are obliged to turn down a considerable number of them. It is therefore essential, that next to and not against big art fairs, rise and ﬂourish initiatives like SLICK. And it is absolutely imperative for the genuine collector, the one who looks for an exhibition dedicated to the most innovative contemporary creation and for that emotion that is always brought by the discovery of a new artist’s discourse, to walk through them. Sa directrice artistique, Suzanne Lecht, travaille avec des artistes vietnamiens depuis 1994 dans le but de les exposer hors de leur pays. Chaque mois, la galerie expose dans ses murs ou à hors les murs, des peintres, photographes, vidéastes et performeurs aux oeuvres singulières.

harlotte Norberg a créé sa Galerie en 2004 et s’attache à présenter des artistes de sa génération, entre 30 et 40 ans environ. Leur point commun : un souci de sincérité, de durée. L’objectif n’est pas celui du « buzz » , de l’effet facile. Chaque artiste de la galerie se caractérise par une expression très personnelle, une vision romantique et sensible du monde contemporain.

harlotte Norberg founded her gallery in 2004, she is keen on showing works of artists of her own generation (in their thirties or fourties). They have in common that they care for sincerity, they all have their own personal way of expressing themselves and a romantic and sensitive outview.

.A.Galerija a été crée en 2005 à Zagreb en Coratie, avec pour mission de représenter de jeunes artistes croates émergents. Ces artistes ont tous été récompensés par leurs pairs et la qualité ainsi que l’énergie de leurs oeuvres apportent de nouvelles ailes à l’art d’Europe de l’est. La galerie s’est ensuite intéressée à des artistes utilisant les nouveaux médias, la vidéo et l’installation ainsi qu’à des artistes internationaux.

.A.Galerija originated in 2005 in Zagreb, Croatia, with the mission of representing young, emerging Croatian artists who could not ﬁnd a venue for their works. These artists have all received some kind of award among their peers and the quality and energy of their work hailed some new winds in Eastern European art. Later, the focus shifted on artists dealing primarily in new media, video and installation art and the representation encompassed international artists.

La Galerie poursuit sa réﬂexion sur les nouvelles pratiques de l’image, en particulier la photographie ainsi que tous les supports numériques et a également une activité en bibliophile. Ce projet est né il y a deux ans de la conviction que les arts numériques, jusqu’alors balbutiants et souvent tentés par la fascination de l’avant-garde ou de la technologie, devaient se confronter de manière signiﬁcative à l’art contemporain; tant du point de vue de la critique que des publics, des institutions que des collectionneurs et du marché. L’enjeu de cette confrontation était double : élargir la diffusion des oeuvres et convaincre que les arts dits numériques parvenaient à une certaine maturité.

umeriscausa is a company that organizes and produces digital art exhibitions. The main idea behind this project is that digital arts - still growing up and often wrongly assimilated into the fascination of technology - need to face contemporary art, both from the point of view of criticism and audience, as well as from cultural institutions, collectors and markets. There are two issues at stake: spreading digital artworks and convincing the viewers that digital art has reached a degree of maturity. Our goal is to help young artists realizing their artworks and spread them across the contemporary art market, both in France and internationally. We also develop interactive cultural events for the business community, in order to show digital art under a different light and to reach a wider audience.

Elle présente des artistes émergents ou déjà reconnus, tous médiums confondus, dans des lieux qui diffèrent du traditionnel cube plan. Les expositions du Salon, quatre à cinq par an, s’installent dans des appartements privés et dans des espaces cosy situés dans des villes à travers le monde, et présentent l’art dans un esprit pédagogique d’ouverture. ’est à Paris, en 2004, que Yukiko Kawase a commencé à présenter sur la scène de l’art international les oeuvres d’artistes contemporains émergents. Sans limites quant à la nationalité, la formation, les medium utilises des artistes présentés, elle base son choix sur un dénominateur commun : le style «cross culturel». A la recherche de sensations visuelles, les oeuvres qu’elle présente transmettent de façon ludique les multiples émotions de l’être humain.

stablished in July 2004, Yukiko Kawase aims to bring the work of emerging artists to the international art scene. Without boundaries in nationalities, academic backgrounds, or media, the common denominator remains ﬁrmly cross-cultural. Consistently engaged with the visual, the artworks Yukiko Kawase presents and the artists she represents playfully reﬂect the shifting cultures of modern society.

art video et art numerique v i d e o a r t a n d d i g i ta l a r t Conforme à sa vocation d’indicateur de tendances et de « dénicheur », SLICK met à l’honneur l’art vidéo et l’art numérique en leur dédiant deux espaces. Par cet engagement, SLICK marque sa volonté de soutenir des pratiques artistiques contemporaines protéiformes et en pleine expansion qu’une foire d’art contemporain se doit de représenter. In line with its « trend scouting » vocation, SLICK dedicates two sections to video and digital art. By this engagement SLICK shows its intention of supporting protean contemporary art practices on the increase, which a contemporary art fair is duty bound to present.

espace video / video room Situé au rez-de-chaussée de la Bellevilloise et en accès libre, l’espace dédié à l’art vidéo permet de découvrir une sélection des œuvres des galeries présentes à SLICK, ainsi que deux programmations journalières réalisées par Le Fresnoy - Studio National des Arts Contemporains et Le Cube - Espace de Création Numérique, établissements de référence en matière de création vidéo et numérique. Located on the ground ﬂoor of the Bellevilloise, the access free section dedicated to video art will allow viewers to discover a selection of works from galleries presented at SLICK, and two daily programming presented by Le Fresnoy - Studio National des Arts Contemporains and Le Cube - Espace de Creation Numérique, two institutions of reference in video and digital creation.

programmation slick / slick Organisée par Rachida Bouaiss, la programmation vidéo présente une sélection d’œuvres explorant les multiples facettes de l’homme moderne : tantôt ironique, critique, onirique ou totalement fantasmé, le regard que posent ces artistes sur l’homme, son rapport au monde et aux autres invite aussi bien à la réﬂexion qu’à la rêverie et plonge le visiteur au cœur des pratiques et préoccupations des vidéastes contemporains. Curated by Rachida Bouaiss, the video programme presents a selection of works exploring the multiple sides of the modern man: sometimes ironic, critical, dreamlike or absolutely fantasised. The glance artists cast on man, his relationship to the world and others invite viewers to reﬂect and dream. It will take them to the core of contemporary video artists’ practices and preoccupations.

programmation Le Cube : die young, stay pretty Le Cube : Die Young, Stay Pretty Le Cube propose de découvrir de jeunes artistes, à travers un voyage dans leur univers personnel parfois surréaliste, parfois angoissant ou sombre mais toujours poétique. Ce programme entraînera notre perception dans un lent voyage aux conﬁns du rêve prémonitoire et de la réalité en déconstruction. Ouvert en septembre 2001, Le Cube s’est imposé comme un lieu d’un genre unique en France. Créé à l’initiative de la Ville d’Issy-les-Moulineaux, Le Cube est géré et animé par l’association ART3000 qui mène depuis 1988 ses activités dans le domaine des arts numériques. Trois domaines d’activité sont développés au sein du Cube : les pratiques du multimédia, la diffusion des arts numériques et le soutien à la création. Ce pari, c’est celui qui représente et défend l’art numérique au cœur même du marché l’art, qui le sort des sentiers de la marginalité pour le faire entrer sur les territoires de l’art contemporain. L’espace art numérique propose une sélection d’œuvres emblématiques des tendances de l’art numérique sur toute la durée de SLICK, avec notamment les œuvres de Catherine Nyeki et Marc Denjean, Bernard Planes, Dan Oki, Music2Eye, Edmond Couchot et Michel Bret, … At a time when the profusion of artistic practices dedicated to new technologies alert art professionals on the increase of digital art, SLICK offers a visible section to audacious galleries who dare to “gamble” on digital art. This bet is about representing and supporting digital art in the heart of the art market, it is about taking digital art out of its marginal path and bringing it to contemporary art territories.
