The Contest Lasts for Moments The contest lasts for moments Though the training’d taken years. It wasn’t winning alone that was worth the work and the tears. The applause will be forgotten The prize will be misplaced. But the long hard hours of practice will never be a waste. For in trying to win you build a skill. You learn that winning depends on will. You never grow by how much you win, You only grow by how much you put in. So any new challenge you’ve just begun, Put forth your best and you’ve already won! W.A. Clennan

ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT NEWS & VIEWS Fall Competitions

Section athletes have been busy preparing for the 2013- 14 Competitive Season! 168 Section skaters travelled to Regina to attend the SaskSkate and Sask Open Competition. Oktoberfest in Barrie Ontario hosted 31 Section entries. Edmonton Region hosted 164 Section athletes. Our own, Kaetlyn Osmond from the Ice Palace FSC, began her journey towards Sochi 2014 at the 2013 Skate Canada International. The skate towards Alberta and Arctic Winter Games R-O has begun. Interest and registrations for the Alberta and Arctic Winter Games has been outstanding! Alberta Winter Games Runoffs begin in November with the conclusion being the 2014 Alberta Winter Games in Banff. How fantastic to be a part of the Games experience in an Olympic Year. Arctic Winter Games will involve athletes that reside north of the 55th parallel. This season the Games take place in Fairbanks Alaska. If you are curious what sports our Section athletes may be exposed to check out the Arctic Winter Games website.

Nutrition at the Competition Site We are now into high competition mode with Open Regionals, Alberta Winter Games, Sectionals and Challenge on the horizon. Athletes and their parents are often on the run. Having spent 96% of my life in the surroundings of an arena I have witnessed the consumption of French Fries as a post competition meal many times. Athletes and parents please remember to pack nutritional choices such as Protein or granola bars. Fresh fruit and vegetable snacks that can be easily packed will ward off that desire to choose poorly. The following facts have been taken from the nutrition information supplied on various company websites. Facts you may wish to know when planning your post competition meal! COACHES CORNER CanSkate Coaching

New CanSkate Coaching Course The NCCP Instruction Beginner CanSkate course has been revised! Coaches who take this new course will be trained immediately on the new CanSkate program and will not need to complete the CanSkate Update Online Training Module in order to instruct the new CanSkate program in clubs. If a coach in your club or Skating School has as an In-Training status they would not be required to complete this online update. Please note that the certification process for coaches at this level has also changed. Particiapnts wishing to begin their NCCP training to become a Skate Canada registered coach must now complete the NCCP CanSkate Pre-Course Training module located in Members Only prior to attending their first course. Following the three day course participants will receive an In-Training Status. At this point they may register as a Skate Canada coach and begin coaching CanSkate only. Coaches wih an In-Training status are eligible to be hired by a Skate Canada club. They will need to continue their certification by completing the NCCP CanSkate Trained Coach Evaluation Protfolio within one year of their course. The portfolio is available on Members Only > Coaches > NCCP > NCCP Instruction > New CanSkate Program. All coaches who will be coaching the new CanSkate program and who have not received the updated NCCP CanSkate course will be required to complete the CanSkate Update Online Training module available on Members Only under Coaches > Coach Online Training > CanSkate Update Online Training Module.

Former CanSkate Coaches In the spring of 2013, the Skate Canada Coaching Development Committee approved a policy whereby if a coach completed the Level 1 Phase 1 training (now named CanSkate training) prior to September 2008 this training would be considered outdated and would require that the coach be retrained. This does not apply to coaches who have completed their CanSkate certification or moved on to complete a higher level of NCCP training and certification. There have been significant changes to the CanSkate program and the National Coaching Certification Program since 2008; thus, coaches returning to the sport to teach CanSkate must complete the updated NCCP CanSkate training prior to being able to instruct CanSkate at any Skate Canada club or skating school. CanSkate is an extremely important program for Skate Canada as it serves 125,000 members annually and it feeds skaters into our other programs. The quality of the program reflects directly on Skate Canada and it is very important to us that every club and coach delivers the program to or above standard. Inquires regarding the new NCCP CanSkate course or coaching status’ may be sent to

COACHES CORNER

Dance Partner Clarification

The following clarification is regarding the activities for dance partners and their associated fees.

Permitted activity:

A dance partner (ineligible/eligible) is only allowed to partner a skater who is in a lesson with a Skate Canada professional coach. Dance partners who are not NCCP trained or certified and therefore not authorized to partner skaters on their own or outside of a dance lesson provided by the Skate Canada professional coach. Failing to abide by the Skate Canada Standards for Professional Coaches policy may jeopardize the insurance and liability status of the club, skaters, coaches, and ineligible partners. From a skater development perspective, it is recommended that dance partners (ineligible/eligible) be brought into a dance lesson when a skater has demonstrated the ability to skate a complete dance to standard and is ready to take a test.

Fees:

Partners who are ineligible may charge for providing a service to skaters, while eligible partners (who are still competing - all levels) may also charge but must follow the prescribed fees as outline in the Dance Partner Fees - Eligible Persons policy. While it is up to the ineligible dance partner and coach to decide how much they will charge skaters, Skate Canada would recommend that the coach and partner negotiate a reasonable combined fee versus charging two separate fees. When the fee is set, the coach and/or club should communicate this information to skaters and their parents/guardians well in advance.

Pathways in Members Only:

• Standards to Professional Coaches Policy: Technical & Programs > Rules > 2013 Official Rule Book > Policies & Procedures > Official Rules > Standards for Professional Coaches > 5.0 Dance Partners > 5.2 Ineligible or Restricted Eligible Person Status. • Dance Partner Fees – Eligible Persons: Technical & Programs > Rules > 2013 Official Rule Book > Policies & Procedures > Official Rules > Dance Partner Fees – Eligible Persons.

Get In Sync

Getting to Know You!

As the season gets underway and teams are set, this is a good time of the year to focus on team spirit, cohesiveness and getting to know and count on your teammates. Here are 5 quick and easy ideas for team building: 1. “Buddy” up new and returning skaters so new skaters have a resource and feel part of the team earlier. They can always go to their buddy for advice and leadership. 2. “Show & Share” - Spend some time each practice (off-ice) having team members tell a bit about themselves so everyone gets to know them, or play ice-breaker games during flood breaks or during off-ice. 3. Spend 10-15 minutes of off-ice time playing another team game like soccer or basketball. It’s fun and the skaters get to learn more about each other in a team atmosphere. 4. Host a team social early in the year... it can be easy as a get-together, bowling party, or scavenger hunt. Or as elaborate as a team-bonding experience at a local adventure camp... high ropes or zipline anyone? 5. Build on the program theme for the season. If it is a movie soundtrack, watch the movie together. Or, have a party where everyone has to dress in character to the story or theme. If you every have any questions about synchronized skating in our Section, please contact the office, or one of our Synchro Reps: Michele Rowein (Edmonton) Kim Boorman (Calgary) mrowein@yahoo.ca kboorman@shaw.ca

Get In Sync

Synchronized Skating Online Monitoring 2013-14

It is that time of year again when teams are asked to submit their programs for monitoring. This is a wonderful opportunity (free of charge!) to have our technical panel from the Alberta-NWT/Nunavut Section review your programs to ensure you are on the right track. This year’s program will run from November 1 to December 10. Please do not feel that your program has to be complete before you submit it, and you can submit more than once for further clarification and review. If you have specific questions about monitoring, or when your submission is ready, please contact Jennifer Betts at jennmarkbetts@gmail.com. Programs will be reviewed by a team of officials and a summary of their feedback will be sent to you within 7 days. We encourage you to send your submissions as soon as possible as the time for return on your feedback will depend on the number of programs under review (which tend to increase closer to the deadline). Due to the proximity of the holidays and the start of the competitive season, we do not have any flexibility with the final submission date of December 10th. Submissions: Youtube - www.youtube.com Videos may be submitted via youtube.com, an online video-sharing site. Videos may be up to 2GB in size and 15 minutes in length. To maintain privacy with your submissions, we recommend the following steps: 1. 2.

Create an account on YouTube Once you have uploaded your program - please send your user name and the current password as well as the program content worksheet to Jennifer Betts (see the gmail address above).

Only programs recorded during practice time will be allowed - any programs from competitions will not be reviewed. We recommend recording a team from where a judging panel would sit (close enough to see footwork sequences but with a wide enough view to see as much of the team as possible). If you have specific questions regarding certain elements or rules, please include these in the email. Planned Program Content Sheets: It is required that all videos are accompanied by a list of your planned elements, including transitions. It is not necessary to provide the exact timing of all elements. Please note that videos will NOT be viewed and feedback will not be provided without this information. In order to provide accurate feedback, it is necessary for the panel to know which elements are being attempted for technical credit. Disclaimer: Due to the popularity of the program, each year more and more submissions are received. Our officials will endeavour to monitor all videos. However, if time becomes limited, priority will be given to Skate Canada: Alberta-NWT/ Nunavut teams. Out-of-Section submissions will be notified if their submission will not be reviewed. Questions? Please contact Lisa Bonderove at lisa@skateabnwtnun.ca or call 780-415-0593.

THE ‘CANSKATE CONNECTION’ Here is a CanSkate Tip/Trick that may help those beginner skaters who are having trouble standing on the ice. Colorful Foam Play Mats can be used the first few sessions for skaters to stand on. As they start to feel comfortable standing up on the mat, step off the mat to try and get the same feeling on the ice. All skaters will not need this teaching aid but it can be very helpful for those skaters having difficulty initially balancing on their blades. Play Mats can also be used as a color matching game. Put the mats on the board against the plexi glass or on the ice by the boards. Have items on the ice that have the same colors as the mats. Skaters pick up items and put them beside the corresponding mats. This should do the trick to take the stress off the first few weeks of the session for skaters, parents, program assistants and coaches! Tammy Greidanus tammylg@shaw.ca CanSkate Resource Team Member

Important Section, Club & Skating School Update - Re:Sound Information Please note the following updates and corrections to information previously communicated regarding payment to Re:Sound by all clubs and skating schools related to ice shows: • Regardless of the number of ice shows and numbers of performances of an ice show a club or skating school has held during a calendar year, the total fee required to be remitted to Re:Sound is $61.85 for that calendar year. This is regardless of the amount of revenue collected. Clubs that had remitted in excess of this amount have already been contacted by Re:Sound or are in the process of being contacted to coordinate either refund of additional payment, or to have this applied as credit towards future payments. • Payment of the required $61.85 for ice shows held during the 2013 calendar year (January 1 – December 31, 2013) is to be submitted to Re:Sound no later than January 31, 2014. • The Re:Sound form to be submitted along with payment has been updated to reflect these clarifications and is available on Members Only under Clubs and Schools > Re:Sound information > Re:Sound T5E Calculator Form. This form is required to only state if a club or skating school held an ice show or not during the years in which this tariff applies. Note that clubs and skating schools are required to inform Re:Sound if they didn’t hold an ice show during a calendar year. • The Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document posted to Members Only has been updated to reflect these updates (Members Only > Clubs and Schools > Re:Sound information > Re:Sound FAQ). Further information on Re:Sound can be found at their website http://www.resound.ca/en/index.htm If you have any further questions regarding Re:Sound that are more related to club and skating school operations please contact Skate Canada Member Services memberservices@skatecanada.ca or Kelly Havixbeck at the Section Office kelly@skateabnwtnun.ca

Creating Opportunities for Skaters with a Disability

We have begun an exciting new three-year initiative for the development of more opportunities for skaters with disabilities. Four clubs have been chosen to be part of this pilot: • Extreme Edge SC • Lethbridge SC • Okotoks SC • Sylvan Lake SC This initiative has come to fruition only through the generous support of the following organizations: • Alberta Sport, Recreation, Parks and Wildlife Foundation • Sport Canada • Alberta Health • Physical Health Agency of Canada

Simply, we want to generate more opportunities to engage skaters with physical and/or intellectual opportunities. The short-term outcomes of this project are to increase awareness, increase opportunities for skaters, and increase the capacity of clubs to include skaters through club-based initiatives. We will endeavour to enhance the capacity of our Section clubs through coaching support, adaptive equipment support, club support, and event support. Please stay tuned throughout the season as we share stories and successes of our pilot clubs and their athletes! We extend our sincere thanks to the following for their support:

November 2013 Winning Edge Seminars & Workshops across the Alberta Sport Development Centre Network are available here.

SECTION SHOWCASE Proudly Presented By:

WER PO E OF PASTA TH

Would you like to add some excitement to your end of the year Carnival this year?? We are currently looking for a host club within 1 -2 hours of Calgary or Edmonton that would be interested in hosting the Annual Section Showcase. Your club would have the opportunity to have selected guest skaters perform at your ice show. Your club would be required to purchase the additional ice time necessary to accommodate a minimum of 4 performances of approximately 30 extra minutes. We hope to provide the host club with skaters who have competed well at the Skate Canada: Alberta-NWT/Nunavut Sectional Championships from the pre-juvenile up to pre-novice events in women’s singles, men’s singles, pairs and ice dance. We intend for the event to be a win/win for your club and these skaters without causing additional expenses to either party by creating extra excitement for the host club and providing performance opportunities for these developing athletes. If your club is interested in hosting this exciting event which is planned in conjunction with the Parent Resource Sub-Committee and the Athlete Development Committee of Skate Canada Alberta-NWT/ Nunavut please contact Yvonne Wolfe, Parent Resource Sub-Committee Chair, at ywolfe@telus.net. Dr. Jodi Abbott selected for 2014 Olympic Winter Games OTTAWA, ONT: Canada will have three judges at the upcoming 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia: Jodi Abbott, Edmonton, Alta.; Karen Butcher, Ottawa, Ont.; and Karen Howard, Regina, Sask. All judges, whether officiating at a local club competition, or qualified to judge at the Olympic level, are volunteers who devote countless hours to the sport. They must progress through several levels of training, examination and monitoring to become qualified by the International Skating Union (ISU) to judge at the world and Olympic level. Countries are eligible to have judges at the Olympic Games based on the qualification of their skaters for the ladies, pairs, men’s and ice dance disciplines, as long as the country has an eligible international judge. The country names were placed into a random draw that took place in Oberstdorf, Germany in late September. Thirteen countries are eligible to have a judge for each discipline, and Canada was selected to name a judge in three: ladies; pairs; and ice dance. Leanna Caron, President, Skate Canada, who is also a qualified ISU and Olympic/world-level official, knows that Canada will be well represented by the individuals selected. “Together these three people bring over 40 years of international judging experience to their roles at the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. They have all passed the rigorous Skate Canada and International Skating Union standards to qualify in their disciplines. Not only will we have our best skaters going to the Games to represent Canada, we also have three of our top officials as well.” An international ice dance judge since 1999, Jodi Abbott gained her ISU credentials for ice dance in 2006, and judged that event at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver. She will again be assigned to judge ice dance at the upcoming Olympic Winter Games. Karen Butcher received her certification in 1998 as an international judge for singles and pairs and earned her ISU credentials for both in 2004. She will be judging the pair event at these Games. She most recently judged the pair event at the 2013 ISU World Figure Skating Championships With the addition of a team event for figure skating, Butcher will do double duty at the Games. She will also judge the men’s and pair segments of the team event, which takes place over the first few days of the Games. In 2002, Karen Howard became a certified international singles and pairs judge, receiving her ISU qualifications in 2009. Also a qualified referee for singles and pairs, she has twice judged at the ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships. She will judge the ladies event at the Sochi Games.
