KEYNOTE PRESENTATION

My Sport, My Dream

Presented by

Developing the Young Athlete: Key issues for Parents and Coaches Presented by Dr. Vicki Harber

Sport has a unique capacity to improve movement skills for our children, develop their resilience, teach them to be adaptable and how to learn from failure. For many children and adolescents, sport is not creating these vital learning opportunities largely due to an excessive focus on winning and excellence at very young ages. Canadian Sport for Life (CS4L) advocates for quality sport and physical activity, describing a developmentally appropriate approach for our young athletes. This interactive seminar will discuss a number of important issues surrounding the developing young athlete. These topics will include early specialization in a single sport, injury prevention for female athletes, the role of physical literacy and the coach-athlete relationship.

COACHES CORNER Coaching Association of Canada Update Please note the following message on behalf of the Coaching Association of Canada - www.coach.ca The Coaching Association of Canada, through its Women in Coaching program, is engaging in an international research initiative with Spain (lead researcher) and the UK in the hopes of presenting the findings at the International Working Group for Women in Sport in June 2014. The topic of our research is the psychosocial barriers to female participation in sport as referees and coaches. Specifically, the study examines male and female coaches’ and referees’ situation, careers, experience, and future perspectives in different sports and at different levels. Our aim is to identify aspects that need to be improved with the ultimate goal of proposing applied measures in this field. To achieve this objective, we have designed a questionnaire we would like distributed amongst female and male coaches and referees as possible. We appreciate any input you can provide by completing the following survey available in English only: Coaches Officials (Note: The template will indicate “referee” but this survey applies to all Officials) The estimated time needed for completing the whole questionnaire is 20 minutes. No personal contact information is collected.

Technical Updates The below update is now available on the Skate Canada website under Members Only > Technical & Programs 2014-2015 Singles, Pair, Ice Dance Program Requirements

Not-for-Profit Corporations Act Skate Canada Impact

In October 2011, Canada’s federal government passed legislation that made significant updates to the Canada Not-for-Profit Corporations Act. The motivation behind this legislation, was to modernize non-profit governance, strengthen member rights, allow new technologies to be used in governance and to reduce administrative burden. All amendments necessary to enable Skate Canada to achieve compliance with the Canada Not-for-Profit Corporations Act (CNCA) will come into effect October 2014. Skate Canada will be taking steps to ensure that a proper course of action is taken. The first phase will be to reduce and consolidate the number of membership classes. The CNCA will strengthen member rights, which will make having too many membership classes or non-voting membership classes problematic. The rationale behind the amendments to the Bylaws of Skate Canada, is to create an inclusive organization. For more information on the CNCA and how it will be affecting Skate Canada please go to Skate Canada’s Members Only > What’s New > 2014 Rule Amendments.
