December 6, 2013 Dear Sport Partners:

As a follow up to the meetings held with our sport delivery partners on December 5 and 6, I am pleased to provide an update on our discussion.

Most significantly, we now have a single focus on amateur sport. With our revised mandate, the Board of Directors has developed a new vision: Alberta, the premier sport delivery system in Canada, and a new mission statement: To enhance, advocate, and inspire participation and partnerships as Albertans strive for excellence in sport. To reflect our revised mandate, the Alberta Sport, Recreation, Parks and Wildlife Foundation is now operating as Alberta Sport Connection. This exciting new brand, including a much shorter and more focused name and a more colourful and modern logo, appropriately reflects the changes to our organization. You can find out more about Alberta Sport Connection on our website www.albertasport.ca. Our work will be guided by the Alberta Sport Plan, which will be updated following a consultation currently underway.

As we transition to a focus on sport, Alberta Tourism, Parks and Recreation will focus on policy, recreation and physical activity. These changes will help ensure we address the needs of Albertans from playground to podium.

Our province has a strong history of sport development and we are confident Alberta can fulfill the new vision of being a premier sport delivery system.

I look forward to working with our partners as we move forward in a new direction.

Sincerely,

John Short Chair

COACHES CORNER

Learn more about the Continuous Education Program (CEP)

The CEP is a Skate Canada program that recognizes a coach’s dedication to professional development in our sport. Coaches earn credits for attending and participating in various events and educational opportunities during a two year cycle. These credits are then recognized as a coach’s status for the following two years. Therefore, a coach’s current status is a reflection of professional development activities that they took part between September 1, 2010 and August 31, 2012. The activities that coaches are currently taking part in (September 1, 2012 until June 30, 2014) will result in their CEP status and membership fees for two consecutive seasons, 2014-2015 and 2015-2016. These activities should be submitted by June 30, 2014, or four weeks before registering for the 2014 skating season. Credits can be earned for a variety of activities including (but not limited to): club administration work, attending a seminar at the club, section, national or international level, providing a parent information session, mentoring or being mentored, completing relevant university or college courses, attending the National Coaches’ Conference, providing PA training, etc. Please note: In order to register for the 2014-2015 season, a coach MUST have earned at least five CEP credits. Further information on the CEP, including a Question and Answer document containing frequently asked questions, can be found on Members Only under Coaches > Registration Documents and Forms. GET IN SYNC

Balancing Singles and Syncho It Can Be Done! Submitted by Jenna MacKenzie

I remember the first time I ever saw synchronized skating. I was at an ice show with my mom when I was seven years old. I immediately knew that I had to try out for the team. I had only been in CanSkate for a few months, so my skating ability was minimal. The coach of the team was Michele Rowein, who is still my synchro coach to this day. She suggested that I take private lessons to improve my skating skills. I instantly fell in love with both disciplines of skating and was involved in both until I retired from singles at the age of 18, when I was competing at the Junior level. 14 years later, I am still competing on one of Edmonton’s synchro teams!

The atmosphere at synchro competitions is amazing. Everyone is there to have fun and skate for the love of the sport. I really enjoyed singles competitions as well, but was never able to make it past Sectionals as my nerves would get the best of me. With synchro, you are on the ice with 15 of your best friends all fighting for the same dream, which is a motivating feeling. Once that music starts, you are instantly calmed by the comfort of the smiles and excitement of everyone else on the ice with you. That feeling truly eases the nerves.

Synchro has also taught me many life skills that I have used outside the rink, especially in the area of teamwork. My confidence in working with others and being a part of a ‘team’ will follow me throughout my nursing career, and I couldn’t be more grateful for that. My involvement in both singles and synchro has allowed me to make many lifelong friendships and I have never regretted Skating at this level meant a great deal of commitment, and at the decision to stay in both disciplines. times, the combination of both singles and synchro made for a very busy schedule. At one point, I was skating six days a week I am proud of all my accomplishments in both singles and synfor singles with one early morning practice and two off ice train- chro but most especially synchro. Skating taught me how to strengthen my time management and organize my life so that I was able to juggle school while training and attending competitions. I am lucky to have experienced both the individual aspects and teamwork aspects of skating. Training for singles helped improve my synchronized skating with respect to my edges, turns, and field moves. My singles coaches noticed that I picked up choreography quickly and easily – which I attribute to synchro. I’m always surprised when I hear skaters/coaches say that you cannot be involved in both singles and synchro because they really do complement each other.

THE CLUBHOUSE Skate Canada Releases Position Statement on Bullying In Canada, November 17-23, 2013 was declared “Bullying Awareness Week” and Skate Canada used this week as an opportunity to communicate its stance on bullying by releasing a position statement. Skate Canada’s document, Position Statement on Bullying is not a policy, but rather a document that outlines Skate Canada’s stance on this very serious social issue. In this document, Skate Canada states that it “strongly condemns bullying, will not tolerate bullying by any of its members, and is committed to raising awareness of this issue and preventing and eliminating bullying behavior within Skate Canada.” The Position Statement on Bullying is posted on the Skate Canada website under Members Only and is also posted on the Section website. Clubs and schools are encouraged to post this document in their club and/or make it available to members upon request.

SOCAN and Re:Sound Update Skate Canada has received questions from member clubs regarding possible remittance to Re:Sound for ice shows and SOCAN for ice shows and competitions by both facilities and Skate Canada member clubs/skating schools. Skate Canada has passed this question along to both organizations with the intent of ensuring that both the facility and the club or skating school have not remitted payment for the same ice show. Please note the following regarding payment for ice shows:

SOCAN

1. 1.Determine whether your municipality already pays SOCAN fees under Tariff 21. If the answer is yes, you are already covered. Get confirmation in writing so that you have it if needed. 2. 2.If the answer above is no, then you need to apply to SOCAN for a license under Tariff 11A. You can find that application here: http://www.socan.ca/form/11A 3. 3.Within 7 days following the ice show complete and submit this application with the appropriate payment. Inquiries regarding the tariffs should be directed to SOCAN at 1.866.944.6223 or email at customers@socan.ca.

Re:Sound

If a facility has already submitted payment related to Re:Sound tariff 5E for your ice shows then the club or skating school would not have to pay. Typically facilities would not be reporting as the responsibility to obtain the licence rests with the ‘promoter’ of the event. Payment for ice shows held during the years 2011 and 2012 is required to be submitted by December 31, 2013 with payment for ice shows held in 2013 due no later than January 31, 2014. Please note as well that as of December 1, 2013, Re:Sound has received T5E summary forms from approximately 200 clubs. Please be reminded that Re:Sound reserves the right to enforce compliance to its tariff regime through a court process for establishments that owe royalties but refuse to obtain the required licence. The Re:Sound reporting form is posted to Members Only (Clubs and Skating Schools > Re:Sound Information > T5E Calculator Form) and included with all club and skating school registration packages. Inquiries regarding these tariffs should be directed to Re:Sound at 1.877.309.5770 or by email at info@resound.ca Finally, please note that remittance through Skate Canada to SOCAN ($64.00 + tax per season) and Re:Sound ($23.42 + tax per season) to cover regularly scheduled Skate Canada club and skating school sessions is a mandatory component of registration dues for any and all Skate Canada clubs and skating schools. It is important that you communicate this to the facility in which your club or skating school is active to ensure that payment is not being remitted twice.

Since many of the awards, sponsorship, and bingo credits you must be a member, it pays to be a member! The membership year is from January 1 to December 31. AFSF is run by a volunteer board, which is always looking for members. Without a strong and active Board, many of the programs could not be offered to support skaters. AFSF has to actively recruit people to serve on the board each year to ensure AFSF’s viability. We meet 4 times a year, and having active board members lightens the load. It is getting people to be active members on the board and take on some of duties to keep things moving forward for all and ensure that the AFSF is able to continue to support Section skaters. The AFSF $50,000 annual contribution back to the skaters of this Sections is huge and can only continue with individuals becoming members and helping to keep it alive. This amount makes a significant difference to skaters. For more information about ASFS, visit www.albertafigureskatingfoundation.ca 26

Creating Opportunities for Skaters with a Disability

We have begun an exciting new three-year initiative for the development of more opportunities for skaters with disabilities. Four clubs have been chosen to be part of this pilot: • Extreme Edge SC • Lethbridge SC • Okotoks SC • Sylvan Lake SC This initiative has come to fruition only through the generous support of the following organizations: • Alberta Sport, Recreation, Parks and Wildlife Foundation • Sport Canada • Alberta Health • Physical Health Agency of Canada

Simply, we want to generate more opportunities to engage skaters with physical and/or intellectual opportunities. The short-term outcomes of this project are to increase awareness, increase opportunities for skaters, and increase the capacity of clubs to include skaters through club-based initiatives. We will endeavour to enhance the capacity of our Section clubs through coaching support, adaptive equipment support, club support, and event support. Please stay tuned throughout the season as we share stories and successes of our pilot clubs and their athletes! We extend our sincere thanks to the following for their support:
