SPECIAL OLYMPICS ALBERTA SO Dance Dazzles Its Audience What was intended to be “most electrifying dance event of 2012” was indeed just that. Months of organizing, weeks of prep, and countless hours of rehearsal all came together on November 23, 2012 at the River Cree Casino and Resort. The evening began as the audience slowly rolled in, mingling and listening to the soothing tones of Alee Adamoski and her guitar. The lovely performer welcomed with room with her grace and soft, yet powerful voice - certainly setting the tone for the evening of celebration and entertainment. Hosts Carmen Leibel and Rob Williams from CTV garnered the audience’s attention and introduced the next performer, Nycki Basra, performing her energetic Indian dance routine. Being modelled after a dance competition show, SO Dance could not be without a voting system where the audience could be heard. Deloitte built a text-to-vote system much like the dance shows on TV where the audience could vote in and have those votes registered in real time. This was an exciting opportunity for the audience to actively take part in the event. Judges Shelley Tookey, St. Albert Mayor Nolan Crouse, and celebrity choreographer Blake McGrath (flying in all the way from Los Angeles!!) took their seats and the house prepared themselves for their first look at a SO Dance performance where a sports personality and a Special Olympics athlete were paired up to dance. From the moment the first pair hit the stage the air was filled with cheers of delight and joy as the audience was fixated on the stars in front of their eyes. The pure energy trekked through the room filling each person and everyone was dancing with the performers. All the way through to well past the last pair, the audience’s energy never wavered. They were all atuned to the 12 dancers that had exploded on the stage. After the din had quieted and the performers had mingled with their audience and new friends, the ticketholders of the evening walked out with one thought, “I’ll be back next year.” Thank you to all who attended! It was an absolute wonder to see the turnout and the joy that the people in the room brought. The dancers’ fundraising pages are still open to those who would still like to donate to their favourite dances of the evening.

THE CANSKATE CONNECTION CanSkate Tips If your club is planning a Christmas skating party try incorporating a Parcel Carry Fun Zone. Skaters take a wrapped present around the circuit and deliver it under a tree. A tree can be drawn on the ice or have a small artificial tree on the ice. The tree could also be used for a warm-up to the song Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree, and pre-CanSkate skaters could decorate the tree using foam ornaments or paper ornaments created by the skaters. (Do be careful what boxes you wrap as there once was a little skater who could not resist unwrapping the present only to find an empty feminine products box!). For more practical ideas and assistance with the implementation of the NEW CanSkate program, please contact Tammy or Leona - CanSkate Resource Team Members. We have been tasked by Skate Canada to answer questions, facilitate clinics and make club visits by request. Program Components Primer for Synchronized Skating

By Chelsey Schaffel Technical Specialist, Technical Controller, and Senior Judge for Synchronized Skating The Program Component Score (PCS) remains one of the more complex and challenging aspects of the “new” judging system, and with good reason – it’s much more difficult to understand what is meant by the “physical, emotional, and intellectual involvement” of skaters in a program than it is to be able to recognize GOE criteria like good shape, speed, and line-up. Judges spend a great deal of time each season discussing PCS to be able to more consistently translate the language of each component into a score from 0-10. This article will provide some brief descriptions, key phrases and words for each PC that will help take some of the mystery out of the marks.

GET IN SYNC Skating Skills

Skating skills have a direct relationship to the team’s ability to execute technical difficulty, but they are also the foundation for performance aspects of a program. For instance, bringing the choreography and music to life requires secure balance on the blade so the team can make the difficult look easy, and focus on the artful side of their skating. Balance is the key to the SS mark. Good flow comes from being balanced on the correct part of the blade. Balance is required for deep and secure edges. Teams that are correctly balanced on the blade can show multi-directional skating and controlled variations in speed.

PE asks, “Did the team project all of the time? Half of the time? Were the skaters stiff, or did they show an ease and confidence of movement while executing difficult as well as simple maneuvers? Was the team committed to ‘selling’ the performance?” The more consistently a team achieves can do these things with quality and ease, the higher the mark will be.

Performance/Execution

At the lowest end of the scale, teams are skating through the music without realizing it’s even there. In the 2.0 to 3.0 range, teams may begin to show some effort at interpreting the music, even if the ability is not be there yet. The mark for IN increases as teams begin to think less and feel more, until they display effortless expressive movement at the highest end of the scale.

To show how PE connects to SS: a team with poor balance on the blade will not be able to show an ease and maturity in carriage and style. This is why, while there can certainly be variation among the five PCS, you ultimately won’t see such drastic differMarching, toe-pushing, scratchiness, and lack of knee bend all ences as, for example, a 2.0 for SS and a 7.0 for PE. represent the low end of the 0-10 scale. Teams receiving marks at the high end have complete mastery of the blade. The middle Choreography/Composition range of the scale reflects a mix of strengths and weaknesses in a The Choreography/Composition mark is about the design of the team. For instance, a team that scores in the 4’s on their SS may program – but that doesn’t mean the skaters don’t play a role. Of show power in their cross-overs but lack some confidence with course, the choreographer lays out the program, and is responone-foot skating. A team in the 5’s may show more ease in their sible for ensuring the arrangement of elements is proportional, turns, but the upper and lower bodies may not move together makes good use of the ice surface, shows creativity, etc. But it’s consistently. A team in the 6’s is beginning to show effortless up to the skaters to execute. The mark reflects how well the skating and soft upper bodies. skaters commit to the theme and structure of the program, and relate the designed movements to the phrasing of the music. To use a sewing analogy, think of transitions as seams in abilities. the program: are the seams visible or invisible? Are they taped, sewn, or tailored? At the low end of the scale, the skaters’ relationship to the choreography is forced: they do a movement simply because it Judges award the TR mark by assessing the variety, difficulty, happens on a certain count. Transitions are sometimes automatic, but sometimes the skaters express the music’s rhythm, changes in tempo, style the skaters are still thinking through them. and character. The key word for the PE mark is delivery. To what extent does the team project out to the audience? At the high end of the scale, teams show ease in their carriage and style at all times. At the low end of the scale, there may be a mix of strong and weak carriage, while a team that is beginning to show an ease of carriage from some skaters, or part of the time, is in the middle range of marks.

Though the details of PCS are complex, the essence of each component is simple once dissected. Remembering even a few of the key ideas highlighted above for each PC will enhance your understanding of the marks your teams receive as the season progresses. Detailed Program Component guidelines are available in the Members Only section of the Skate Canada website.
