IGNITING A LOVE FOR THE OUTDOORS AMY BONKOSKI

D

iscovering the programs that the South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks (GFP) offers has opened a new world to me, ignited a new love & passion inside of me, and helped me discover hobbies I want to share & experience with others. In August I was able to attend the Becoming an Outdoor Woman (BOW) weekend where I learned an incredible amount of skills for outdoor sports and gained the confidence to pursue these skills further. One class I took that weekend was teaching me how to shoot a shotgun. I had never shot or even held a shotgun before but at the class I became well versed in what gauge and what type I felt comfortable with. I tried shooting at least half a dozen different types of guns that GFP brought for the weekend. That opportunity was an amazing way to start off my experience with shotgunning and I left that course with a desire to continue learning and experience more. A short while after my first time handling a shotgun, my husband and I had the opportunity to get away for a weekend pheasant hunt, provided by GFP as well as Pheasants Forever. This was an incredible first exposure and introduction on our state’s well-known sport of pheasant hunting. It was on this weekend hunt with GFP that I had further one on one instruction on using a shotgun, learned how to pheasant hunt and was able to shoot my first bird. This ignited a love for this sport. I am hooked. One thing I have been taught with attending different courses, events, and classes is that surrounding yourself with a supporting community is so important in continuing the skill just learned. I was able to attend yet another pheasant hunt at a preserve, provided by GFP and brought 3 of my close girlfriends along so they could learn too. Now they are hooked. It is through these amazing opportunities that I have the community to carry on these skills I’ve learned. I also now have the confidence to teach my children the great sport I have grown to love. Because of the instruction I had received, I felt comfortable enough take my daughter out for a quick pheasant hunt one afternoon. I knew enough to teach her the basics of pheasant hunting and though we didn’t come home with any birds I am proud that I showed her, and will continue to show her, that a woman, her mother, can be a hunter too.

“Two shots, Two jakes” – Amy’s new shotgun skills came in handy during her first turkey hunt this spring!

ONE THING I HAVE BEEN TAUGHT WITH ATTENDING DIFFERENT COURSES, EVENTS, AND CLASSES IS THAT SURROUNDING YOURSELF WITH A SUPPORTING COMMUNITY IS SO IMPORTANT IN CONTINUING THE SKILL JUST LEARNED.”

20th Annual Festival of Books in Brookings The SD Festival of Books will take place September 23 -25 in Brookings at the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center on the SDSU Campus and at the Children’s Museum of South Dakota in downtown Brookings. The SD Humanities Council produces the Festival of Books and it is considered the state’s premier literary event. The Festival will host more than 60 presenters including featured authors Mary Kay Andrews and Emily St. John Mandel, National Book Award winner poet Terrance Hayes, world-famous marathoner Dick Beardsley and awardwinning children’s author Traci Sorell. Highlighting the event is Nick Estes, author of the 2022 One Book South and the Dakota Humanities Council selection, Our History is the Future, and N. Griffin, author of the Young Readers One Book Humanities Council selection, Smashie McPerter and the Mystery of Room 11.

14

The goal is trifold says Jennifer Widman, Director of the South Dakota Center for the Book. “We want to bring together some of the best authors of South Dakota, to showcase books being written in and about our State and, finally to support aspiring writers through craft talks and writing workshops,” she says. “There’s nothing like being able to tell your favorite author how much their book meant to you.” This year’s Festival of Books is expected to bring 10,000 people together including 5000 youth. The event is free to the public with the exception of a few events that feature food and some larger workshops. For more information, contact: SDHumanities.org/SDBookFestval.com.

A nonprofit organization, it relies heavily on volunteers and donations to support its mission serving more than 6,000 children ages 4-18 and their families annually.

For Safety Village of South Dakota’s Executive Director Roxanna McKenna, this fact makes her commitment to work collaboratively with local first-responders, county emergency management departments, businesses, donors and volunteers critical. She shares, “Children are precious and we need to safeguard them in our state. Our programming is focused on reducing unintentional injury death rates in South Dakota through education.”

“Our goal is to educate children and adults to make safe choices when presented with opportunities to make this choice. OPTIMAL AGING Anti-aging medicine, or functional medicine, is becoming one of the most popular areas of medicine today. Functional medicine aims to keep people healthy and functioning regardless of their age. Most of us want to live as long as we possibly can and small decisions we make every day can impact the quality of our life for years to come. We plan for so many occurrences in our life, but few of us plan for our inevitable aging. What can be done to help with optimal aging? Two of the challenges that face us as we age are high blood sugar and elevated blood lipids. Berberine Support is a product we carry at Pharmacy Specialties & Clinic that supplies high-potency berberine combined with alpha lipoic acid that can help with blood sugar and lipid management. Berberine also has been shown to provide a relaxation role in the blood vessels, thus lowering blood pressure. Alpha lipoic acid is an antioxidant that can protect against the oxidative stress that occurs with aging. But always remember when optimal aging is the goal, a healthy diet, adequate exercise, and a healthy lifestyle are the best way to maintain your body function for years to come.

Golf Adventures

in the Sioux Empire A couple’s guide to the best local links By Chellee Unruh

W

hen the Masters’ Golf Championship is held it heralds the unofficial start to the Midwest golf season beginning mid-March and extending through the end of October. Some spouses dread the golf season because they become a “golf widow." A golf widow is someone who is left alone for 2-5 hours multiple times during the week or weekend while their partner is out on the golf course alone or with friends. The golf season can be a source of contention, but it doesn’t have to be. Instead of spending all that time alone, you could instead be spending it with your partner/spouse learning to play golf. Golfing with your partner/spouse can be a fun and relaxing way to bring you closer together rather than “driving” you apart. Some people may have reservations about inviting their spouse into their golf time fearing they will lose out on their

18

SiouxFallsWoman.net | August/September 2022

time alone or time spent with friends. However, the benefits of golfing with your spouse far out weight the often-exaggerated cons. For example, it is a notable way to spend uninterrupted time together. It’s likely you will end up playing more golf than you did before your spouse started joining you. Not to mention it is a great way to stay healthy and in shape. An ideal place to test to see if golfing together is a good fit, is Great Shots, a place where you can eat, drink and play golf regardless of your age or skill level. With three levels and 60 climate-controlled bays, you can hit balls into their driving range to practice your skills or play a variety of easy, fun games. Ball tracking technology lets you see where your shots land, and you can hit a new ball with the wave of a club. Great Shots also offers a full restaurant and bar making it a perfect place for a date night. With the variety of games they offer, it takes the intimidation factor out of golf allowing you and your spouse to have an enjoyable time. It is also a

good alternative if you want to golf and “get a round in” but don’t have enough time to spend a full 2 hours like you would playing nine holes at a typical golf course. Golf bays are reserved on a first come first serve basis. If you decide that golfing is a sport you enjoy and you want to become more serious about it, you can also look into the golf lessons offered by Sanford Power, located within Great Shots. After playing a few rounds at Great Shots and confirming that golf is a sport you want to enjoy together, you need to know the local golf course options to play. Sioux Falls and the surrounding area is rich with 21 beautiful golf courses that range from 9–18 holes and can accommodate players from beginning skillsets to the more advanced player. Within Sioux Falls and on the fringe of the city limits are 7 golf courses open to the public: • Prairie Green • Elmwood • Kuehn Park • Bakker Crossing

• Willow Run • Spring Creek • Northern Links

Looking for a short road trip? Just a short drive from Sioux Falls a multitude of independent and GreatLIFE sponsored courses await you and your partner: • Central Valley, Hartford • Rocky Run, Dell Rapids • River Ridge, Garretson • Worthington Golf Course, Worthington, MN • Lenkota Country Club, Lennox • Fox Run, Yankton • Hidden Valley, Brandon • Brandon Country Club, Brandon • Grand Falls Casino Golf Course, Larchwood, IA • Meadow Acres Golf Club, Larchwood, IA • The Bridges, Beresford • Par Mar, Parker • McCook Country Club, Salem • Parkston Country Club, Parkston • Sunrise Golf Course, Colman • Wild Oak, Mitchell • Bluffs Golf Course, Vermillion • Madison Golf and Country Club, Madison • Cattail Crossing Golf Course, Watertown No matter where you decide to play it is always best if you book your tee times in advance. With the increasing popularity of golf in the Midwest, many courses get booked up as it gets closer to the weekend, especially those around Sioux Falls. With this road map of golf courses to play laid out before you, there is no better time than the present to rescue your partner from being a widow of the golf season and start to enjoy some fun in the sun together. n

FUN AT THE COUNTRY APPLE ORCHARD Greg and Katie Jones have been in the event venue business since 2016 when they built and opened The Meadow Barn at Country Orchards. In 2019, they built The Veranda, a second venue also located at the Country Apple Orchard in Harrisburg. Last year, they had the opportunity to purchase the Country Apple Orchard where they have been focusing on giving the orchard and the Fall Festival new life. “We’re working on rejuvenating and preserving the orchard. We’ve added free range chickens, goats, pigs, and other livestock for more sustainable, healthier gases and soils and improve insect control,” Greg said. Many of the tress in the orchard are over 30 years old. Newer varieties of apple trees that were not previously available, including over 200 Honey Crisp and Zestar trees, have been planted. Greg and Katie are also adding new attractions to the Fall Festival at the Country Apple Orchard. Festival goers can look forward to family friendly activities such as two 90ft jumping pillows, sand castle tire mountain, 150ft zip line course, giant hay bale maze, petting zoo, train rides, 160ft corn pit, apple cannon, hay rides and so much more. In addition to the attractions, there are concession stands, a Festival Beer Garden, food trucks and the Country Store, where you can purchase a large selection of local items along with candy. The store has it’s very own candy section. Located on the festival grounds, there are also private tents set up where attendees can host birthday parties, small group get togethers and large corporate events. The tents are free with purchase of admission. They have a catering menu as well to accommodate a meal for your event. Field trips are also

advertorial

available for youth groups, daycares and churches. The Fall Festival runs every Friday, Saturday and Sunday starting the first weekend in September and ending the last weekend in October. There will be themed weekends that bring some extra-fun entertainment for everyone. “We have made it a really great family event. You could spend an entire day out here and not be bored,” Greg said. Tractor rides through the orchard for apple picking along with pumpkins for purchase are available to those not attending the Fall Festival. There will also be craft vendors and many great fall displays for photo taking located outside the festival area. Greg and Katie are not done adding venues to their location. Beaver Creek Church and Eggers School House, both formerly located on Augustana University’s campus, were moved to the Country Apple Orchard for another wedding venue option. The Eggers School House will be across the pond from the church and act as dressing rooms and a bridal suite. Greg says that wedding ceremonies will be available starting in 2023. To learn more about the Country Apple Orchard and the Fall Festival, follow them on Facebook or at countryappleorchard.com.

SLIDES & RIDES DESTINATION!

Prenuptial Agreements Legal Advice from Melissa Nicholson and Nicholson Law By Virginia Olson

C

hildren, separate property, inheritances, and business interests represent several significant considerations when entering into a new relationship. At times, protecting personal and financial considerations can compete with moving forward in a relationship. One frequent complaint I hear from clients in a marriage is that even though they kept everything separate between their spouse and them, they were not protected in a divorce. A prenuptial agreement and/or postnuptial agreement can remedy many of those issues. That being said, first and foremost, personal, as well as legal considerations should guide communication and decisions on how you conduct your relationship. Both deserve fair weight and consideration. Prenuptial agreements, postnuptial agreements, estate planning and seeking advice on how to generally manage your interests in a legally favorable manner are examples of effective tools to help ease competing interests. For example, separately owned property can be divided by the court in a divorce proceeding. SDCL 25-4-44 provides that “[w]hen a divorce is granted, the courts may make an equitable division of the property belonging to either or both, whether the title to such property is in the name of the husband or the wife.” Further, the

22

SiouxFallsWoman.net | August/September 2022

South Dakota Supreme Court has stated that “South Dakota is an all property state: all property is subject to division regardless of its origins or title.” Kolbach v. Kolbach, 2016 SD 30, P 13 (citing SDCL 25-4-44; Muenster v. Muenster, 2009 SD 23, P 16). The only time property should be set aside as non-marital property is “in the case where one spouse has made no or de minimis contributions to the acquisition or maintenance of an item of property and has no need for support.” Id. (citing Muenster, 2009 SD at P 16). Whether getting a divorce or considering entering into a new relationship, handling your affairs with legal savvy may prove beneficial in the event a conflict ensues later. Also, South Dakota inheritance laws provide for an elective share so that the longer you are married, the more a spouse is entitled by law to inherit. For example, prenuptial agreements, aside from differentiating property interests, can also void and waive an elective share entitlement. Additionally, naming a guardian is one of the most common motivations for executing a Will, in addition to laying out financial affairs. Often learning how to manage an inheritance or property you brought into the marriage could alter or impact the way it’s ultimately divided in a divorce or upon death. Educating yourself gives you options to make proactive and thoughtful decisions to finesse sensitive issues. n

Red Light Therapy: Science-backed Red Light Therapy Promotes Rejuvenation of Mind and Body By Virginia Olson

R

ed light therapy (RLT) is an emerging treatment that is showing promise in treating acne, scars, stretchmarks, redness and signs of aging like fine lines and wrinkles. RLT has also received lots of discussion about its effectiveness beyond enhancing skin. It has a host of other health benefits claiming to lower blood pressure, make hair shine and grow, decrease exercise-induced muscle fatigue, improve sleep quality and helping the body to relax.

The Bridges at 57th 5019 S Western Ave #180 Sioux Falls, SD

Lots of names are used to describe RLT: low-level laser light therapy; low-power laser therapy; nonthermal LED light; soft laser therapy; cold laser therapy; biostimulation or photo biomodulation; and phototherapy. Still, all use the same technology – a noninvasive treatment that uses low wave-length red light. First developed for clinical use by NASA in the 90’s, it helped heal the skin wounds of astronauts. RLT has grown in popularity in the last few years within the beauty and wellness community. What was once only available in medical settings or exclusive spas is becoming more accessible everywhere. In Sioux Falls, Year Round Brown Tanning Salons now offer this new technology either delivered in a standup RLT booth or on a RLT bed. Though its RLT bed and booth may look like they are for tanning with their warmth and glow, their purpose is different. In a 20-minute session, both the bed or the standup booth provide RLT treatments using the low-level light therapy healing the body from the inside.

Tops, Dresses, Premium Denim, Accessories, and More!

What is the science behind this healing power of red light and full-body treatment? Just like plants, our skin and other body tissue have the ability to absorb light and turn it into energy stimulating our body’s natural process to build new proteins and regenerate cells. The red light stimulates collagen production which gives skin its elasticity, structure and strength as well as increases blood circulation and reduces inflammation.

Do you live outside of the Sioux Falls Area? We offer Virtual Coaching.

Year Round Brown has received many customer testimonials about the benefits and results of RLT use in their salons. Stories of improvement in joint pain to reduction of inflammation, scar appearance and cellulite are just a few.

And who doesn’t want to be warmed, relaxed and rejuvenated? n

Before

After

To get the best results from RLT, three to five sessions per week are recommended. RLT appears to be safe and is not associated with side effects though eyewear is a must. Sessions should generally be between 10 to 20 minutes long. Every day is ideal.

Blast from the Past

FASHION By Chellee Unruh

T

here are fashion trends from the past that we never thought we would see back in retail stores, but some of them are popping up again and we’re not mad about it. Here are some blast from the past fashion trends that were popular in the 80’s and 90’s that are back and being styled in a way that makes them relevant again. Biker Shorts 80’s - An oversized sweatshirt and a pair of tight biker shorts were all the rage during the 80’s. Parents today are probably having flash backs when scrolling TikTok and finding a new generation enjoying this comfortable wardrobe staple and showing off the versatility of biker shorts as the latest trend in athleisure clothing. Fanny Pack 80’s - Fanny packs aka bum bags were the ultimate handsfree accessory of the 80’s that buckled around your waist allowing you to make a fashion statement and carry all your essentials at the same time. To be current with this trend you no longer strap it around your waist, it is worn over your shoulder with the front bag going across your chest, hence their new name “the cross-body bag.” Those of us that originated this fashion trend know that no matter how you wear it, it is still a fanny pack but we are here for it. Mom Jeans from the 90’s - You can put your skinny jeans toward the back of your closet, because mom jeans are back in style. You know the type; they are high waisted and have a loose-fitting leg that tapers as it gets closer to the ankle. Pair this jean with a crop top, some sandals or big white sneakers and you will easily be on trend. Sweater Vest 90’s - This went out of style?! “As If” Anyone that watched the popular 90’s movie Clueless remember this expression and the iconic sweater vest that was worn over a slightly longer flowy button-down shirt paired with a plaid mini skirt, knee-high stockings and Mary Jane shoes. The next time you are out rollin’ with your homies, throw on a sweater vest over a button-down shirt and everyone will think you are a total Betty! Big Hair Claw Clips 2000’s - What is great about this trend coming back is that it is not only cute, it is also very functional! Big clips in all sorts of fun colors and designs are a great way to pull your hair back when you are headed to the gym or need a quick and easy updo. The big hair claw clip would also pair nicely with your mom jeans and crop top. Cheers to effortless fashion! n

SEAN BAKER: DOCUMENTARY FILMMAKER How does someone become a 17-year-old documentary filmmaker? For Sean Baker, it started when he was 7 years old while he was out with his parents to buy a car at Schulte Subaru. He quickly got bored during the shopping trip so he pulled out his iPad and started taking a video. Owner Mike Schulte took interest in what Sean was doing and gave him a tour so he could film the dealership. After the tour, he asked Sean to send him the video. “I was so surprised and excited when I received $40 in the mail,” remembers Sean. “It was my first real paying job.” This video was the first of many videos that Sean would shoot for Schulte Subaru. “We recognized his talent from day one shares Mike Schulte, so we have continued to hire him to produce films for events and promotional videos we use in our social media.” His most recent video for Schulte Subaru was a community action video for Veterans. “This one had special meaning for me because my mom is a veteran, a retiree from the Army,” shared Sean. “It’s been fun to see Sean’s talent and his gift of storytelling develop over the years. We wanted to encourage his passion for film so as his talent grew, we invested in helping him get better equipment to advance his skills.” Sean was grateful to Sarah and Mike for buying him a new iPad but he was even more excited when Mike and Sarah Schulte bought him his first professional camera. “It was a Panasonic AG UX 90. That camera solidified my passion for film and desire to make movies” says Sean. The time spent developing his skill for telling a story through film by making promo videos for Schulte Subaru has allowed Sean to expand his horizons to do other projects. He has made videos for non-profits that he has a passion for like the JC’s Haunted House and the Ronald McDonald House. He also began making short documentary films that have won him national and regional recognition. His 10-minute short film on artists during the pandemic won 2nd place in the national C-Span competition and 1st place at Wayne State University. Because of the support of his family and Schulte Subaru, Sean has premiered his first feature-length

film entitled “We Love Lucy” This 50-minute documentary tells the story of an inspiring 7-year-old child named Lucy that was born with non-ketotic hyperglycinemia (NKH). NKH is a rare, genetic, metabolic disorder caused by a defect in the enzyme system that breaks down the amino acid glycine, resulting in an accumulation of glycine in the body’s tissues and fluids. The majority of babies born with this rare disease pass away shortly after birth. Using his gift of storytelling through film, Sean Baker takes you on a journey of Lucy’s battle and triumphs over this rare disease beating the odds. “The story carries the theme throughout of a bumble bee”, shares Sean. With the teeny little wings, it doesn’t seem like the bumble bee should be able to fly, but it defies all odds and it thrives. I used the bumble bee to help the viewer visualize and understand the power of Lucy’s story.” “Even though she can’t talk she has so much to say and to give. Lucy lives a full life. She is a profound example of how we can all live life in a fulfilling way by living in the moment and not holding on to things.”

FALL INTO a New Look!

We invite you to relax stressed muscles, nourish overworked skin, renew tired feet and refresh your look in our Aveda salon and spa! Call 712-777-7822 and book your next spa visit today!

Thanks to the sponsorship provided by Schulte Subaru “We Love Lucy” premiered at the State Theatre in Sioux Falls SD on June 21 and later in Reno Nevada, the hometown of Lucy. Mike and Sarah flew the family to Reno and accompanied the family to the premier. So, what’s next for this up-andcoming documentary filmmaker? Most likely film school where he wants to continue telling the stories highlighting issues that go unseen. No matter where his career in film takes him, he will always be grateful to Mike and Sarah Schulte for believing in him and giving him his first professional camera and starting in the film industry.

Apple Pie Bars and Muffins

Story & photos by Ashley Sornsin

I

t’s finally that time of year when apples are in peak season, ready for picking! Apples are incredibly juicy, crunchy and delicious. Whether or not you’re picking them fresh from a tree or purchasing from the store, apple season is here!

Does the saying ‘an apple a day keeps the Doctor away’ still apply, if the apples are in a bar or muffin?! Asking for a friend…. In all seriousness, these Apple Pie Bars and Apple Muffins are quite healthy and a great way to use apples. Apples have a ton of health benefits, so they become the star in these recipes. Both recipes use all whole food ingredients and no processed sugar, plus they are gluten, dairy and egg free, all while being full of flavor and nutrition! They’re easy to make and perfect for a delicious and healthy snack, dessert or even breakfast that your whole family will love! No one will know they’re actually good for them!

Apple Pie Bars (serves 16) Crust: • ¾ cup creamy peanut butter • ¼ cup pure maple syrup • 3 Tbsp refined coconut oil (no flavor) • 1 tsp vanilla extract • 1 cup almond flour • ¼ cup coconut flour • 1 tsp cinnamon • ¼ tsp baking soda • ¼ tsp sea salt Filling: • 3 apples, chopped (approx. 3 cups) • ¼ cup water • 2 Tbsp pure maple syrup • 2 tsp lemon juice • 2 tsp cinnamon • 2 tsp tapioca starch/flour • ½ tsp nutmeg • ¼ tsp sea salt Directions: Preheat oven to 350° and line an 8x8 baking dish with parchment paper. In a medium saucepan, bring to a boil, apples, water, maple syrup and lemon juice. Allow apples to soften, then remove from heat and add in remaining filling ingredients, then allow to cool. In a separate bowl, combine crust ingredients until dough forms. Press ¾ of dough into pan and bake for 7 minutes. Spread apple mixture over top and add remaining ¼ of dough to top as a crumble. Then continue baking for 25 minutes. Allow to cool and cut into bars. 36

20-30% DISCOUNT EVERYDAY! (No coupon required)

Apple Muffins (serves 12) • 1/2 cup honey • 1 flax egg (1 Tbsp ground flax + 2 1/2 Tbsp water) • 1/3 cup unsweetened applesauce • 1 cup almond or other nondairy milk • 1 tsp vanilla extract • 2 1/2 cups oat flour (blend oatmeal to make) • 2 tsp baking powder • 1 tsp cinnamon • 1 apple, chopped (+ more for topping) Directions: Set oven to 350° and spray a muffin tin with coconut oil. Make flax egg, allow to sit and ‘gel’ for 5 min. Combine other wet ingredients + flax egg. Combine dry ingredients. Add wet to dry and stir together, then stir in chopped apple. Using a cookie scoop, scoop batter into muffin tin. This recipe makes 12 large or 24 mini muffins. Top with additional chopped apple. Bake large for 25-30 min or mini for 12-15 min.

These Apple Pie Bars and Apple Muffins are sure to get rave reviews! Not only are they absolutely delicious, they are also packed with nutritious ingredients, letting you feel good about each bite! These don’t require a lot of prep time and come together quickly, plus they’re great to make ahead of time and freeze for busy mornings when you want to grab something on the go. In the Kitchen: Luxury Touches Story & photos by Lisa Marie Blair

O

ne of the most memorable lines from The Wizard of Oz is ‘there’s no place like home.’ This saying became famous because it rang true. Another well-known saying is ‘the kitchen is the heart of the home.’ With so much emphasis on your homes’ kitchen, it makes sense to add luxury touches to this space. Kitchens come in all shapes and sizes so even if you have a small kitchen, square footage should not hold you back from making it luxurious. The kitchen sink is the most used item in your kitchen, so why not make it a beautiful focal point? Consider splurging on a cast iron, copper, or farmhouse sink to make that luxury statement. And don’t forget to include a stainless-steel sink rack to help protect your new hard-working sink. Continue to dress up your sink feature with a fabulous faucet - it will be the cherry on top. Faucets are going hi-tech and can even be activated by voice command or turned on using touchless technology. Sheer luxury. Create another dramatic focal point in your kitchen by showcasing a stove hood that stands out. Consider moving the microwave from over the stove to the pantry or having it built into your cabinets. A stove hood vents better than a microwave, and it also elevates the space. A pot filler faucet over the stove is one of the most luxurious additions you can add to your kitchen. 38

SiouxFallsWoman.net | August/September 2022

This will instantly make your kitchen look and feel high end and customized. Appliances can range dramatically in price, but the good news is - you can get modern high-performance appliances within your budget. New countertops are a splurge - however, they also transform the entire room. If your aim is a luxurious kitchen, then quartz, granite, or marble tops are the way to go. Butcher block is another trendy yet timeless option that adds warmth to the heart of the home. Don’t be afraid to mix and match countertop spaces such as a butcher block island with granite on the perimeter. A backsplash that coordinates with your countertops will help define your style. The options available are endless. There are also less expensive changes that you can do on your own without breaking the bank. Updating your kitchen lighting, changing out the cabinet hardware, and adding open shelving are all pretty easy DIY tasks. These small changes can make a mighty difference in making your kitchen feel grander and personally customized. There truly is no place like home, so make your kitchen the luxurious place that makes you want to click your heels together three times and magically be there! n

Simplifying the rental search process, leasing agents Kayla Kayl, Andy Middlen, Ivy Stenzel, and Dakota Bertelsen embrace their primary objective to provide housing options based on the unique needs of their customers. Director of Sales Devin McChesney explains, “Though the team may operate with other duties such as upkeeping our social media and shooting virtual tours for our website, their primary focus is our future residents and creating a stress-free leasing experience.” The leasing team is trained to follow a thoughtful process with customers:

Back: Devin, Andy | Front: Dakota, Ivy, Kayla

• Agents strive to understand the customer’s needs and the “why” behind those needs to find an optimal housing fit. Prequalifying customers early in the process determines their best options.

• Leasing agents assist with the rental application and other necessary documentation, which puts the customer at ease. • Agents match customers with homes that align with their wants, needs and budget and schedule tours of those rentals. McChesney says, “The leasing team almost acts like real estate agents in the aspect that their interests are tied to the client and not the property, which provides an incredible customer experience.” With 8000 rental homes available, the leasing

team at Lloyd is not tied to specific properties, which opens a wide range of customer options. If they are temporarily unable to match for a customer’s specific needs, Leasing Agent Dakota Bertelsen says, “We focus a close eye on potential openings and contact property managers directly to see if we anticipate anything to come available. When a property opens, we contact the client immediately to help them secure their desired home.” Navigating the sea of rental opportunities in the current market can seem daunting. The background work performed by the leasing team at Lloyd eases that stress. They save customers hours of surfing available properties online and contacting multiple locations to schedule tours while meeting the demands of their employers, spouses, and families. The one-call approach brings around-the-clock responses, personalized service with a contact number to reach the leasing agent directly, and access to the team that also offers familiarity with the properties, amenities, local attractions, surrounding businesses, etc. When interacting with others, leasing agents and all Lloyd employees follow guidelines structured around their core values: Do the Right Thing, Solve It, Build Relationships for Life and Have Fun. A family-owned and operated company for 50 years, Lloyd treats customers like family. This results in long-term relationships with their residents; as McChesney says, “The ownership mentality passed down from Craig and Pat Lloyd through conversations over the years shines through in our everyday interactions with everyone we meet.”

t’s difficult to imagine this stunning custom ranch walk-out home is lying on a site that once was home to a barn. Nevertheless, homeowners Deb and Gary Kayser are just grateful to have this location nestled in central Sioux Falls. “This could not be a better fit,” adds Deb. “Just a few houses down are where our son and daughter-in-law live with their three children.” Wanting to downsize, they settled on house plans and were very distinct with their wishes. “We wanted a slab on grade home,” adds Gary, who was involved in much of the construction details. “Something that meets our needs while accommodating our family.” But first, the existing home needed to be razed. After the original farmstead was sold, another home stood in its place. However, the condition was so poor that it needed to be torn down giving the Kaysers the perfect opportunity to use their customized house plans. The Kaysers had been looking to downsize for several years but could not find the right fit. While driving around the McKennan Park area, they both noticed numerous construction signs for Harvey Custom Homes and were immediately impressed with the work that accompanied the sign. They decided to meet with Ben, president of Harvey Custom Homes, to show him their plans. His positive referrals and attention to detail landed him a new client. A draftsman put the finishing touches on the couple’s drawings and things started moving quickly. That’s where Paula, interior designer/interior project manager at Montgomerys comes into the picture.

“We never thought having an interior designer would fit within our budget,” adds Deb. But after working with Paula, they realized her experience and ability to work within their allowance provided much-needed reassurance with their decisions. “I like to start out with color,” adds Paula. “Once a colorway selection is made, we took a tour through the showroom to get an idea of both their styles.” She then got to work pulling pieces together and working with the couple to select everything from backsplash tile and lighting to floor coverings and furniture, what we call the whole home experience. “I also like to work in stages, so my clients don’t get overwhelmed,” adds Paula. “I find that it makes the process less stressful.”

Montgomerys are a striking darker tone adding contrast to the various area rugs and furniture. The grand fireplace with stacked stone that fully extends up the wall to the 10-foot ceilings creates an instant focal point and is finished off with an elongated electric fireplace and wall-mount television. “Our choices are based on both what looks good but also accommodates our family.”

Thankfully, Gary immediately fell in love with a rectangular frosted glass and black LED light fixture for the entryway. Using his selection, they proceeded to move forward with the entire lighting package. But there were still many more decisions that needed to be made.

Leading into the kitchen, a Cambria quartz countertop is an instant attraction. “I think we had to design and build this house around this island,” says Paula, as she jokingly references the oversized island. “See - we have to have enough chairs for all the members of the family,” Deb adds with a smile. A black undermount sink and brushed nickel faucet are the only distractions from the oneof-a-kind quartz slab with thick veins of grey and taupe. A “faux” cabinet front is a door that leads to the pantry for added storage and convenience. Open front cubbies line two walls and connect to the custom-built desk overlooking a large window.

For starters, they really wanted a home that was comfortable and inviting. The living room greets with an oasis of neutral hues flooding the main floor. Engineered wood floors from

For more formal meals, a rustic dark wood table with a sanded live edge is surrounded with upholstered chairs and bench. “The grandkids just love this bench,” adds Deb.

Not all of these family favorites would have been possible if it weren’t for the talents of an experienced interior designer like Paula, who has access to one-of-a-kind pieces and building materials as well as the homeowners who kept an open mind. In fact, there’s so much available it can get stressful. Thankfully, Paula stayed one step ahead with making selections and kept the couple on track when picking out everything from building materials to drawer handles in the master bathroom. Oyster kitchen cabinets from Showplace Cabinetry melt into the champagne toned walls. The backsplash is a striking white tile with a contemporary pattern. A favorite of both Paula and the homeowners is the mixed metal mosaic backsplash for the wine bar. To add depth and separation, the wire front cabinets are stained a dark hue to break up the light tones throughout. Wood floors extend into the master bedroom where a black leather upholstered headboard with grommets is kept casual with putty bedding and minimal accessories. The master bathroom features a zero-entry shower concept and blends with dual sinks, black and silver pendant light fixtures and elongated floor tile. The custom cabinets are stained a dark peppercorn hue to add drama and interest. A favorite for Paula is the walk-in shower. “I just love the detail of the tile,” adds Paula of the built-in shower niche. The swirly hues of taupe, cream and grey make the tile come alive with a fully polished finish. “This really adds a touch of elegance,” adds Deb of the reflective floor. Another way the homeowners were able to add elegance without going over budget. A unique powder bath is quaint in size but bold with design. A modern LED tube pendant not only offers light but serves as an eye-catching focal point. Subtle colored walls are paired with a rubble rock backsplash that extends across the entire wall making a bolder statement of style. The custom cabinet remains dark to add depth and pairs with the black pendant light.

Since the Kaysers plan to help with the grandkids a lot, having the right bedrooms and bath were very important. For space efficiency, one bedroom features a day bed with trundle that can easily convert from sofa to sleep. A Jack and Jill bathroom connects the space to the other room, serving a dual purpose. To accommodate both style and function, a custom cabinet is perfect for toiletries and storage while a white countertop and frameless mirror makes sure to put every inch of space to good use. For cohesiveness, the pendant light fixture takes cues from the powder bath but uses lines of LED light versus the tubes. This full bath also features a clear glass curved tub/shower panel finished off with elongated tile laid out in a soldier pattern. The second bedroom remains contemporary but has a touch of nostalgia with an antique brass headboard, a family heirloom. In true period style, the white bedding is made from classic chenille. Although the grand kitchen is an easy favorite for both Deb and Paula, for Gary, it was the garage. And not because of its size but rather a small carved out space for a “man cave.” A flatscreen television, sofa and sparse furniture provides the perfect get-away for Gary. They say family comes first and for the Kaysers, they have crafted a lifestyle that involves their children and grandchildren. It shows in their custom-built home, yet it remains classic in design avoiding anything too trendy. “We just love every part of this home,” adds Deb. “I call this entire experience ‘a God thing’ because everything came together so beautifully. Now it’s time to settle in and start living the life they dreamed of. n

Transform Your Space with Custom Metal Style From rustic to sleek, metal makes a bold and upscale statement in any home Story & photos by Margaret Pennock

T

oday’s homeowners are looking for sophisticated touches that make a statement in their living spaces. For metal craftsmen Lance Dunlap and Jeremy TeGrotenhuis, there’s nothing more striking than adding metal accents to add character to new builds or updating dated features in existing homes. According to Lance, “With the popular layout of homes opening up more and more, the desire to have something that really provides solid style to a home is a must. When home owners have the opportunity to put their unique touch in their home, having customized steel work is a great way to do that.” Lance and Jeremy have operated Quality Welding in Sioux Falls having purchased the family company from Lance’s father Ed and his partner in 2016. The two have seen the demand for custom metal fabrication for homes explode over the past several years. “We have expanded our design work but our main product that we create for the residential market is custom railings. In addition, we also provide numerous structural materials needed for the growing sizes of the homes from lintels, brackets and I-beams.” And it doesn’t stop there. Metal is a diverse material that can dramatically change the overall look and feel of your home in many different ways and applications. This can include structural and cosmetic features as well as one-of-a-kind furniture and accessories. Lance shares, “We

make table bases which people top with wood or stone for end, coffee and kitchen tables as well as book shelves and fireplace mantels. These would be some easy ways a home owner could add something new to an otherwise mundane area of a house.” In addition, metal can be fabricated in various styles effectively changing the feel and vibe of your home effortlessly from modern farmhouse to edgy and industrial. “Each project we build is customized for our clients specifically for their space. We take the ideas and pictures our customers have and recreate it specifically for their space and importantly to code. Because of the high level of customization of our projects they are truly one-of-a-kind statement pieces.” Lance smiles, “That being said we do get the opportunity to build some pretty cool items. These range from items in new businesses, planters on patios, accent pieces for institutions throughout the city, projects along the bike trials and many more. We once made a steel figure for the children’s hospital for a suit of armor. We get requests for all kinds of stuff and we are happy to make it a reality.”

Healing from Sinus Infections By Sanford Health

A

re sinus infections causing you pain? The struggle is real when dealing with a sinus infection. Whether it’s fatigue during the day, interruptions during sleep or aching pressure and swelling, a sinus infection can make life miserable.

Sean Johnson, MD, an ear, nose and throat surgeon at Sanford Health, explains what a sinus infection, also known as sinusitis, is and when you should see an ENT specialist. What it is “Sinuses are hollow cavities filled with air located on either side of your nose. They have small openings, called ostium, which connect with your nasal passage,” Dr. Johnson said. “A primary purpose of sinuses is to make mucus, which with your nose, helps humidify and adjust the temperature of the air you breathe. During sinusitis, the tissue in your nose and sinuses becomes inflamed and swollen. This swelling can block the sinus openings, causing mucus to build up.” Symptoms of sinusitis often include thick nasal drainage, a reduced sense of smell, nasal congestion, facial pressure and facial or dental pain. Many of these symptoms occur because the immune system is fighting off and removing the infection, but it leaves people congested, often unable to smell, and feeling groggy and in pain.

54

SiouxFallsWoman.net | August/September 2022

When to see a doctor A sinus infection is typically caused by a virus, such as the common cold. “Because many sinus infections are viral, antibiotics can be ineffective,” Dr. Johnson said. “Symptoms usually get better on their own after seven to 10 days. Many over-the-counter medications, such as nasal saline sprays, nasal steroid sprays and decongestants, can be effective at reducing symptoms.” But a viral sinus infection can turn into a bacterial one. “Some patients have complications, symptoms that never seem to go away after several weeks despite multiple courses of medications. Or some even experience multiple infections a year. These patients could benefit from evaluation by an ENT surgeon,” Dr. Johnson said. What a specialist offers ENT surgeons provide care for difficult cases of sinusitis where conventional treatment methods have failed. An evaluation is completed to identify the underlying problem and treat it. Medication and other options are always considered first before resorting to surgery.

During the initial evaluation, an ENT specialist may use: Nasal endoscopy: A small camera is placed into the nose. This allows ENT specialists to see structural causes for symptoms. Computed tomography (CT) scan: A special type of X-ray imaging. This helps doctors see into the sinuses. Due to advancements in health care and technology, nasal surgery is more convenient than ever. Sinus surgery is usually a same-day procedure and patients are often able to return to a normal routine within a few days. Sanford Health ENT specialists also care for a variety of other conditions affecting hearing, sleep, speech and more: • Ear tubes • Tonsils and adenoids • Sinus infections and allergies • Hearing and balance problems • Snoring • Head and neck cancer • Cleft lip and palate • Hemangiomas/birthmarks Visit sanfordhealth.org to learn more. n

Managing Mental Health During Midlife and Beyond By Alyssa Waltman, Avera Health

F

ifty is the new 40 and soon that will probably change, too. After all, what is middle age anymore?

Women are doing more — job, family, friends, fun, caring for aging parents. They’re also twice as likely to use antidepressants, according to data from the National Center for Health Statistics. Add hormonal changes that start midlife and challenges can add up. “At midlife, women face a gamut of happy as well as difficult milestones,” said Nancy Wise-Vander Lee, PhD, LP, psychologist at Avera Medical Group Behavioral Health Clinic. “It takes a toll on their energy, confidence and perspective on the future.” The Business of Midlife “As we age, it’s important to discover what really matters to you, which often includes pouring into and loving others,” said Rebecca Hanzen, health coach with Avera Medical Group Functional and Integrative Medicine.

56

SiouxFallsWoman.net | August/September 2022

You may be disappointed in some things: • You didn’t pursue your passion • You didn’t take that risk • Broken family dynamics • Poor health habits When negative emotions linger and aren’t challenged, there runs a risk of a midlife crisis, when impulsive decisions might devastate finances, families and futures. Remember, you’ve had good moments, smiles, laughter and victories. What Is Aging Gracefully? When you practice infusing grace into every day, especially into life’s painful moments, you realize that every difficulty is an opportunity, every broken relationship is a chance to love, every setback is a growing opportunity. “You realize you’re no longer helpless or hopeless,” said Hanzen. “In fact, you find there’s so much hope and possibility that can come to fruition in your life.”

“Finding your joy and your purpose begins by accepting yourself right where you are,” said Wise-Vander Lee. “Life has thrown many obstacles at you, and even though you managed them the best you could, it leaves scars.” Some of the most prominent mental health conditions WiseVander Lee sees are depression and anxiety in women who are stretched thin from the demands of life. Sorting through the pain you’re carrying, especially with the help of a professional, can help you move forward in freedom. “As you heal from unfinished pain, you start to focus on creating another chapter in your life that is beautiful and rewarding,” said Wise-Vander Lee. Tips to Enhance Mental Health Managing mental health means practicing wellness that is within your power. Here are some self-care tips recommended by Hanzen and Wise-Vander Lee: 1. Eat healthy. Reduce sugar, alcohol and other inflammatory foods. 2. Exercise. Sunshine and movement boost endorphins, while sitting around inside can make you feel lethargic. 3. Manage stress. Say “no” gracefully (but consider saying “yes” another time).

4. Practice mindfulness techniques. Deep breathing or tensing and relaxing muscles can alleviate tension in the moment. 5. Get quality sleep. Good sleep is non-negotiable when it comes to mental health; deep REM sleep physically heals your mind. 6. Focus on gratitude. Choose to be grateful especially when situations tempt you to think negatively. 7. Approach difficulties with grace. When tough things come, process them slowly. This gives you a chance to reframe your mind. 8. Meditate and pray. Getting alone in a quiet place helps you to refocus your thoughts and heart. 9. Have faith. Establish a relationship with your higher power, your source, God, who gives you your life-fulfilling purpose. 10. Give. Serving others invites a deep sense of joy, satisfaction and purpose in life. “A person is made up of a body, mind and spirit,” said Hanzen. “Because the composition of a person is so entwined, you often can’t treat one part without treating or affecting another part.” Learn more about mental health resources at Avera.org/ BehavioralHealth. n

“I Can Hear My Grandkids!” Making the Change to Earlens® By Virginia Olson

L

ike 35 million Americans, loving grandfather, Ron Alverson suffers from hearing loss.

When the 70-year-old Chester native’s dissatisfaction with his current hearing aids finally got the better of him, Alverson decided to make a change. “I had worn hearing aids for 20 years, but the ones I had just didn’t work well. Still, I thought I was managing to get by because I could read lips.” But Alverson admitted he still had to ask folks to repeat themselves and he didn’t want to miss out on conversations with his family any longer. “My wife Sue, and everyone around me, was concerned that they had to repeat everything in a louder voice so I could hear. Although I never saw my hearing difficulties as a handicap, those around me did. It was a friend who recommended that I check out Earlens.

58

SiouxFallsWoman.net | August/September 2022

Earlens is an FDA-approved hearing device that is not an implant, nor a conventional hearing aid, but rather a hearing lens. This tiny lens is placed directly on the eardrum. The ear tip transmits the broadest range of frequencies of any hearing technology on the market today. It sends high fidelity audio signals directly to the lens, gently vibrating the eardrum creating enhanced sound. Ron first met with Bob Froke, an audiologist at Midwest ENT & Allergy. Froke, who also wears Earlens, highly recommended that he give them a try. He said the sound quality is richer than any conventional hearing aid can currently offer. “I have never been so excited to share a breakthrough technology in hearing devices than I am with Earlens,” Bob said. “Right off the bat, I told Bob that I wanted to be able to hear my three grandkids! I have always felt so fortunate to be able to spend time with them,” Ron said. “Sadly, my

NO ONE FACES CANCER ALONE SANFORD NURSE NAVIGATORS PROVIDE PATIENT-FIRST CANCER CARE

Cancer is an intimidating diagnosis. In the tangle of appointments, medications and even operations, patients can easily feel overwhelmed and lost. That’s why Sanford Health has nurse navigators—a group of registered nurses dedicated to the coordination of care throughout a cancer patient’s journey. Nurse navigators are at the center of the care process, guiding patients and their families through the many challenges of cancer treatment. For Sanford Health oncology nurse navigators Betsy Kiesow and Kami Lindberg, cancer has a familiar face— but not just because they see it at work every day. Kiesow and Lindberg both have personal connections to cancer that helped inspire their work. For Kiesow, it was her father’s battle with a rare T-cell lymphoma; for Lindberg, her mother’s journey through lung cancer. 823-560-203 6/22

These experiences made them believers in the value of nurse navigators before they ever held the job. Now, as nurse navigators, Kiesow and Lindberg play major roles in guiding patients through life-changing cancer treatment. They aim to make a difficult path more manageable. “The overall goal of navigation, regardless of tumor type, is to make the journey as smooth as possible,” Lindberg said. “It’s full of highs and lows.” Oncology nurse navigators act as a main point of contact for their patients. They coordinate appointments, provide medical education, connect patients to supportive resources and act as mental and emotional caregivers during and between visits.

“We see [patients] through every facet of their treatment, whether that’s chemotherapy, radiation—everything,” Lindberg said. “As they move through treatment, we move with them.” “You don’t always know what to expect going into a patient’s room,” Kiesow said. “But when you can see their smile, even under their mask, it’s excellent.” Lindberg echoed her colleague. “That’s what keeps you coming back— the satisfaction of knowing that you’re impacting the journey,” she said. “And when they’re done with that journey and they give you a hug and say thank you, that’s big.” Learn more at cancer.sanfordhealth.org

Both Kiesow and Lindberg try to be with their patients at every major appointment. Sponsored by Sanford Health

THE CANARIES ARE BACK! Professional baseball in Sioux Falls traces its roots all the way back to 1902. However, the current professional baseball team in Sioux Falls – the Sioux Falls Canaries – as they currently operate, played their first season of baseball in 1993 when the Northern League came into existence. Since then, home games have been played at the Birdcage. In 2006, the Canaries became part of the American Association of Professional Baseball. The Sioux Falls Canaries are proud to be an organization that empowers women in the sports industry, which has been male-driven for many years. Ali, Whitney, Nicole and Christine can be seen in the Sioux Falls Canaries front office in many different roles. “Our entire staff has been all in on reaching for that vision we have as an organization, and these women have been integral in helping lead that charge,” says Fossand. “The ability of each them to dive in, take ownership and execute has reverberated throughout our entire team.” For almost 30 years, the Sioux Falls Canaries have been bringing a one-of-a-kind experience to families and baseball enthusiasts in the area. Desiré Jansen:

The Art of Reinventing Yourself Through faith, community and a whole lot of grit, anything is possible By Chellee Unruh | Photos by Kelly Middlebrooks

I

f there is one person that has mastered the art of reinventing themselves, it is Desiré Jansen. She has reinvented herself numerous times throughout her life driven by self-motivation or life events beyond her control. From a kid in Tea, South Dakota to actress in Miami, Florida, to experiencing homelessness to becoming a successful business owner and non-profit supporter, Desiré has harnessed the power within to grow and move forward. Each time she reinvented herself she emerged stronger with an increased desire to serve others and offer the same grace, forgiveness, acceptance, and love that she received throughout her life. Desiré Jansen is a true trailer park kid at heart and proud of it. She was born in Pierre but moved around South Dakota for most of her life. She was raised by a faith filled mother that instilled in her the unconditional love and support that she exudes today, and by an artist father who taught her the value of being open and accepting of the diversity in others. She also considers Dolly Parton to be the third person that raised her. “Dolly’s personality and music helped give me the sass I needed to smile instead of cry, and the trailer park kid in me helped me keep my feet on the ground,” says Desiré. As a kid Desiré engaged in theatre. She was active in theatre throughout high school and continued on to the University of South Dakota as a theatre major. She performed in dozens of plays while attending USD and met someone who saw her potential and convinced her that moving to Florida would be the best way for her to realize her dream of a career in film. him saying, “If you can make it in Miami, you can make it in Hollywood.” At the age of 19, Desiré left college and moved to a suburb between Miami and Ft. Lauderdale in pursuit of a film career. Desiré worked a variety of part-time jobs while auditioning for films. Desiré was able to make a few movies but found herself in a toxic relationship that forced her out of her home in the middle of the night. Desiré shares, “Being newer to Florida, I didn’t have anywhere else to go so I slept in my car in a Walmart parking lot and showered at the gym where I had a membership. I’m not proud of myself for getting into that situation, but I do know that God was protecting me before I even knew Him. I wasn’t a Christian back then, but as I have grown in my faith I recognize and am amazed by his protection over me during my MANY experiences in Florida.” As fate would have it not long after Desiré found herself homeless and living in her car, she started a job at one of the largest Honda dealerships in the world. There she met another girl her age and they quickly became friends. One day while at work, Desiré accidentally let it slip to her new friend that she was showering at the gym and living in her car. Without hesitation, her new friend invited Desiré to live with her and her family. “She took me in as a sister and was the person that also introduced me to the woman who would eventually take me under her wing as a mother while I lived in Florida,” Desiré recalls fondly. That woman was a Cuban, a passionate pastor and life coach who would teach Desiré about Jesus Christ and help her turn her life completely around. As Desiré was rebuilding her life in Florida, she reconnected with her high

school best friend. He was in the air force and his entire family still lived in Lennox where they graduated high school. It was not long before they realized they were in love. As they were trying to figure out how the new love would work with Desiré living in Florida and him living in Kansas, 3 months went by before a tragic motorcycle accident took his life. Overcome by grief Desiré made the decision two days after his passing to purchase a one-way ticket back to South Dakota to be with his parents. Losing him was by far the most traumatic experience Desiré had gone through and it sent her on a downward spiral of excessive alcohol use and trying to find someone to fill the void. It took a couple of years for Desiré to find herself on solid ground again. Two years after the death of her high school love, Desiré met her husband, Joel. He had just opened his new business, Science Nutrition. We met online before it was the thing to do, laughs Desiré. I told him, “I don’t meet people online, so he’d have to come to Bracco and sit in my section.” I was a waitress there at the time. I like to say we officially met at Bracco, but he likes to tell people we met on MySpace! Desiré and Joel dated for a year before getting married. Today they have been married for 14 years and have two beautiful children. Being back home and finding stable ground gave Desiré the freedom to explore her passions and interests, reinventing her life once again. She was able to bring her love of film back to South Dakota and often collaborates with a team of brilliant local filmmakers. Desiré has done over a dozen short films and two feature length films.

In addition to film, Desiré began to discover her inherit artistic side and took up graphite pencil drawing. Desire shares, “My dad is a professional artist, so I’ve watched his entire career as it evolved. It wasn’t until 2014 that I had ANY desire to see if I had any of his talent. My dad gave me my first art lesson and I was HOOKED. It was instantly therapeutic to me.” Desiré drew inspiration from other artists she followed on social media developing her own style and learning new techniques. She was able to turn her newfound hobby into a successful side business as a portrait artist having the honor of creating hyper realistic portraits of loved ones, family portraits and commemorative pieces for people that have lost loved ones. After giving birth to her first child, Desiré quickly realized that her hobbies would have to take a back seat for a while and that if she wanted to do something creative, she would need to make a career out of it. Desiré stumbled onto microblading by seeing incredible artists from Asia and the Middle East on Instagram while she was developing her skills as a portrait artist. Being a seasoned veteran at reinventing herself, Desiré decided to start a new career in microblading. “When I found out I didn’t have to have a degree in cosmetology, I left my part time job as an ELL Liaison (English Language Learner) with the Sioux Falls School District and I took my first Microblading course in LA,” shares Desiré. Shortly after her training she opened Gemineye Studio, specializing in cosmetic tattooing. Gemineye Studio has been open for five years and has grown to four full-time artists that specialize in microblading, eyeliner, lip blushing, scalp micropigmentation, and fine line tattooing. Three years ago, Desiré started Gemineye Academy, a training school teaching the art of cosmetic tattooing. It has grown from teaching classes of 10 students every other month to teaching classes of six students every month from all over the country. “We also have 68

the addition of a new advanced lip blushing class, which our artist Madison Boss teaches. One of the most beautiful things about my life is that I get to watch as artists, like her, grow personally and professionally through this career. We all get the amazing honor of gaining the trust from our clients to tattoo their face, which we take very seriously," shares Desiré. With a blossoming career, Desiré is now focused on giving some of her time to non-profit work. “My first passion has always been working with immigrants and refugees. Living in an environment as rich in culture as Miami really stirred that in me. However, my dad is who I credit my love for learning about other cultures and making sure that immigrants and refugees feel welcomed and accepted in our city. Growing up, we had dozens of people who my dad would RANDOMLY meet on the streets and invite into our home. All of these experiences growing up taught me to make sure everyone around me, no matter what, felt seen, loved, and safe,” says Desiré. She currently supports Call to Freedom and serves on the board of a non-profit called Love Tessa. Desiré is living proof that no matter where you are in life or what you have experienced, you can always reinvent yourself. She lives every day by the example and the words her mother taught her. Tattooed on her arm as a daily reminder is: Walk gently, speak softly, love deeply, and give everything. She hopes by sharing her story it will give women the courage to reinvent themselves over and over and over and to never stop learning. ”I’m not afraid of what my future looks like because I don’t let anyone define me. I’ve experienced a huge amount of peace with that outlook, and I hope other women can find that same sense of peace by connecting to my story of mastering the art of self reinvention,” declares Desiré. n

Profiles: Melissa Chinn Finding Freedom in Her Work By: Natalie Slieter | Photos by Kelly Middlebrooks

M

elissa Chinn is the proud mother of her four-year-old son and the owner of not one business, but two: RGI Properties and Eye On You Designs. At RGI Properties, she is a real estate investor and over at Eye On You Designs, she does freelance graphic design work.

Chinn grew up in California and moved to northwest Iowa when she was 14 years old. When she was 10, her father passed away and left farm land in California to herself and her sister. For many years, the land was leased and grew various crops, such as artichoke and spinach. Unfortunately, in 2004 there was an E.coli outbreak that affected the crops and eventually resulted in Chinn and her sister selling the land. Chinn had a lump sum of money that she needed to decide what to do with. In order to avoid a big tax bill, she opted to do a 1031 Exchange. Within 45 days, she needed to identify the properties she would acquire – all while working a full time job. After spending some time on biggerpockets.com, she felt most comfortable buying single-family properties. Today, she owns 11 properties: her primary property along with three other properties in Sioux Falls that she self-manages and seven properties in Birmingham, AL, that are managed by Spartan Invest.

With goals of retiring at the age of 55, she is working with her mentor at Spartan Invest to reach her financial goals. In doing this, she will be selling two properties in Alabama and investing in property in Chattanooga, TN, to take advantage of it being a state without state income tax. “Real estate is a great place for people to start investing,” Chinn said. “I was always taught to buy dirt. There’s never going to be enough dirt. Real estate is essentially one investment that’s never going to lose its value.”

LET US BUILD YOUR DREAM HOME! Enjoy carefree, one level living with high-end finishes in one of our stunning twin homes. Our single-family homes with basements include zero step entryways and luxury finishes.

• Optional snow removal and lawn care maintenance agreements available

• Mystic Heights Development • In business since 1993

Her advice to others wanting to invest in real estate is to ask questions, educate yourself, and speak with a real estate agent. She says most are eager to educate. Chinn’s graphic design work with Eye On You Designs takes up most of her time, and investing in real estate allows her to, as she says, “set it and forget it.” Most of her graphic design work is for locally owned businesses, where she creates logos, websites, and handles their marketing needs. Chinn loves what she does because it gives her freedom. Being a single mom, she loves the flexibility it offers and the ability to work anywhere. “As cliché as it sounds, if you find what you’re passionate about, it’s really not work. Find what brings you happiness and joy,” Chinn said. n

What's New: Heartland Spaces Market A gorgeous lifestyle collection for your home Story & photos by Margaret Pennock

M

inutes south of Sioux Falls in picturesque Canton, Heartland Spaces Market is an exquisite collection of trending furniture, home décor and clothing by interior designer and veteran home staging expert Beth Thompson. In addition, the market includes custom-designed t-shirts by her partner Stacy Ancell. According to Beth, “I purposely named it the “Market” because the store will include a wide variety of high-quality items such as furniture, home décor, artwork, clothing, and accessories. In addition to the store front, I will also provide in-home consultations and assist with decorating/design projects.” Beth shares, “Heartland Spaces Market is an expansion of my existing interior design and staging business, which has been operating primarily in Sioux Falls over the past four years. Heartland Spaces is a business my mom and I actually owned together and had so much fun building! The idea for the store came up when my mom told me she and my dad were going to be snowbirds and move to Arizona several months out of the year. With her moving away, I decided I wanted to focus more on the design part of the business and also have a place to sell products. It has always been a dream of mine to own my own store and this seemed like the perfect opportunity.”

“When my husband and I decided to make Canton our home 12 years ago, I knew I wanted to have a store in town someday. I didn’t know exactly where but I always loved the 121 E 5th, white brick building on the corner across from the courthouse. As it sat vacant for many years, I would think to myself, this would be the perfect place to open my store.” Beth’s vision was on-point and the airy, beautiful 72
