Red Light Therapy:

Science-backed Red Light Therapy Promotes Rejuvenation of Mind and Body

By Virginia Olson

Red light therapy (RLT) is an emerging treatment that is showing promise in treating acne, scars, stretchmarks, redness and signs of aging like fine lines and wrinkles. RLT has also received lots of discussion about its effectiveness beyond enhancing skin. It has a host of other health benefits claiming to lower blood pressure, make hair shine and grow, decrease exercise-induced muscle fatigue, improve sleep quality and helping the body to relax.

Lots of names are used to describe RLT: low-level laser light therapy; low-power laser therapy; nonthermal LED light; soft laser therapy; cold laser therapy; biostimulation or photo biomodulation; and phototherapy. Still, all use the same technology – a noninvasive treatment that uses low wave-length red light. First developed for clinical use by NASA in the 90’s, it helped heal the skin wounds of astronauts.

RLT has grown in popularity in the last few years within the beauty and wellness community. What was once only available in medical settings or exclusive spas is becoming more accessible everywhere. In Sioux Falls, Year Round Brown Tanning Salons now offer this new technology either delivered in a standup RLT booth or on a RLT bed. Though its RLT bed and booth may look like they are for tanning with their warmth and glow, their purpose is different. In a 20-minute session, both the bed or the standup booth provide RLT treatments using the low-level light therapy healing the body from the inside.

What is the science behind this healing power of red light and full-body treatment? Just like plants, our skin and other body tissue have the ability to absorb light and turn it into energy stimulating our body’s natural process to build new proteins and regenerate cells. The red light stimulates collagen production which gives skin its elasticity, structure and strength as well as increases blood circulation and reduces inflammation.

Year Round Brown has received many customer testimonials about the benefits and results of RLT use in their salons. Stories of improvement in joint pain to reduction of inflammation, scar appearance and cellulite are just a few.

To get the best results from RLT, three to five sessions per week are recommended. RLT appears to be safe and is not associated with side effects though eyewear is a must. Sessions should generally be between 10 to 20 minutes long. Every day is ideal.
