EDITOR’S NOTE

Four months ago this magazine was just an idea, and I never thought we would get this far. But, here we are with something original and awesome. I’ve wanted a way to express my vision of The Sims in this type of way. I do not use CC and I know a lot of people who would like to see creations without custom content. My friends and I have worked very hard and diligently to make sure that has happened. I am very lucky to know such talented and creative individuals. Getting this magazine together was nothing short of hard work from everyone. I just want to say that I appreciate every last one of you guys. You are some of the nicest, smartest most caring people I know, and this has been so much fun! I am ecstatic about the second issue because I know you guys will deliver more outstanding work. I also want to thank the fans: the wonderful people who joined the site, who let us interview them and write about them, and the people who asked me how things were going and who have offered to help. You are all wonderful and we at SLM appreciate the support so much. I hope everyone enjoys this issue as much as I do. Thank you and enjoy!

O

ne of these fine days in Creative Corner I stumbled across a gem and I just had to know how it was made. I’ve never seen this user’s work before, but I was astonished when I saw the pictures for this house. Wow. That’s the only word that is appropriate for this work of art. I am very thankful to have such a talented builder sit down and talk to me about her masterpiece. These are some questions I had for her:

How long did it take you to build and decorate this house? Large houses usually take me 3-7 days to complete, and this house was no different. I begin building by drawing out my floor plan, and once the drawing is complete, I begin the actual building. I work on my houses for a few hours at a time. I believe I probably spent around 20 hours over a period of 5 days on this particular house.

06

Architecture

What is your favorite part about this house? I love the bright colors I used for the interior in both the living and dining room; it’s my favorite part of the house. I usually use more subtle colors, but decided to become a little more daring in my color choices for this house. I am quite pleased with the overall effect of the colors I chose.

SIMplified Living  |  JANUARY 2012

How long have you been building and decorating? I started building houses during Sims 2, so I would say I have been building and decorating Sims houses for 5 years or more.

What would you say is your favorite style? The Edgerton Estate is a Colonial house, but overall contemporary is my favorite style. Contemporary simply means the style that is current or happening. I base most of the houses I build on current house styles and usually use floor plans I find on the internet. I have found that most of the houses I build are influenced by more than one particular style.

Do you have any advice for a new builder/ decorator?

If you had to pick a family from Twinbrook to live here, who would you pick and why? The family from Twinbrook I would choose to live in this house would be the Castors. The two boys would benefit from having a large yard to play in and Mrs. Castor would be able to work from home in either nectar making or just gardening career. Also, by having a large house might encourage the Castors to continue to increase the size of their family.

Start with something simple and if you are having problems with building, there is a lot of good information in the forums, Creative Corner. Use the forums to ask questions if you need to. If you are planning on sharing the things you build, test them for playability before putting them online. 

“XAVIER’S HOUSE” by gngrsnp SLM: Introduce yourself, please.

SLM: Why did you convert the family home?

Xavier: HI, my name is Xavier Etienne Rodgers. I’m 24 and I own the family gym called Xavier’s House.

Xavier: I graduated college in Sparta. My parents came to visit, and it was the first time they had ever left Appaloosa. After graduation, they hugged me, handed me the keys to the house and went off to travel the world! The rest is history.

SLM: Xavier’s House? Xavier: Catchy, isn’t it? ‘Hey, where are you hanging out tonight?’ The reply: ‘Oh, at Xavier’s House!’ [He grins.] I thought it was a great name for a gym, where you can work out, chill with friends, bring the family, have parties or just hang out and read a book by the fire. It’s like hanging out at your best friend’s house. I’m there 24/7. [He winks.] We have a fireplace on both floors; the bottom great room has a bar and restaurant, and the top great room is an open game/reading room. Then we have a pool, sauna, daycare, workout rooms, aerobics, martial arts equipment, and party room. Oh, and two sleep rooms with state-of-the-art sleep machines, for serious rejuvenation after a grueling work out.

10

Architecture

SLM: So, where in town do you live? Xavier: [Grins slyly.] Did I tell ya, the gym has sleep beds and I’m at one’s disposal 24/7? It’s just until all the loans and such are paid off. New business and all… SLM: Oh! (Guess we won’t be printing that little detail! [Chuckles.]) Thanks for your time. Xavier: No, thank you. When will this article be published?

Victorian homes are defined by their multi-turreted gabled roofs. Heritage Victorian Manor highlights this roof ideal.

Heritage is three stories tall. In order to have the mansard style roof, a fourth story wall is added.

Now to add the roof. The first section is the tall gable in the front and side. Don’t forget to add the decorative accent elements!

Add floor tiles in the color of the roof over each section that will be conical. Use the half hipped roof tool for the edge of the roof.

Using the half hip tool, add the roof over the wall extension.

Now use the conical roof tool to add the first turret base.

After adding all the turrets, go back to the largest turret, select the tall gable roof tool and make another peak.

12

Architecture

SIMplified Living  |  JANUARY 2012

Remember that fourth story wall? Now we’re going to use it.

Select the half hipped roof tool. Start at the edge of the roof (the corner at the small circular window and the tall window). Go two squares deep, then drag it to the end of the building.

Use the roof height control to drag the roof to the top of the fourth story wall.

Make sure the roof is even. Now use the tall gable roof tool to add the smaller gables.

Choose the floor pattern for the roof. Custom match the color of the floor pattern to that of the roof shingles.

Add the Fairytale fence around the roofline, and voilà! A beautiful Victorian roofline. 

PESCADERO by missroxor

P

escadero is an EA build located just off the beach in Sunset Valley. Given its location and the bright, fresh color scheme along with the Victorian structure; one could expect a classic, traditional interior with fresh, beachy colors...one would be very disappointed. So it’s time for a make-over! The look I was going for was traditional Victorian style with a fresh and largely beachy inspired color scheme: lots of cool colors as well as some sandy browns, white, and the occasional coral pink. Since Victorians weren’t known for their open, empty spaces, I built in some room divides and new entry ways. As well as defining the space, the divides allow for more clutter to be hung up or propped against the wall. However, it is a seaside home, too, and because I didn’t want it to feel too dark and closed in, I used wide arches instead of doors. I created a decorative divide between the kitchen and living room that allows for the million-dollar view to be seen, even from the back of the house. I then rebuilt the staircase, which

14

Design

allowed me to redefine the octagonal space at the top of the stairs. By moving the main staircase and front door forward a few tiles, I was able to add a downstairs half-bath/laundry and a master bathroom upstairs.

Traditional features such as the fireplace and built-in bookcases add charm while their simple white-wash keeps them from being too fussy and overbearing. The wallpaper print hints at the Victorian theme but again the colors are borrowed from the seaside. The orangey-wood floors and occasional piece of wooden furniture add warmth to the otherwise cool room.

SIMplified Living  |  JANUARY 2012

Keeping with the beach inspired color palette; I added a few more antiquelooking objects, like the wash stand, for that Victorian charm.

The cabinets are classic and simple while the contrasting island adds a little interest and character to the kitchen. The odd piece of distressed-wood furniture is perfect in any seaside home. Traditional chairs with a Victorian feel are given a distressed look. Plants were popular in Victorian times; especially palms, since they were considered a luxury item.

Accessories styled with a warm dark wood and distressed metal (like the desk lamp) can look both nautical and antique-like. Victorian families often had one phone per household, and it was set on a telephone table with a chair in an easily accessible place in the house. Also functions as a good way to fill an empty space in the hall!

Slightly more modern than some of the other rooms, the traditionally ornate shapes of the bed, desk and chair hint at the Victorian theme while the cool colors, striped rug and whitewash floorboards remind us we’re in a beachfront home. Jewelry and perfume are in keeping with the extravagance of the Victorian era. Situated at the very back of the house with no sea view in sight, I kept the nursery color palette light, and continued the white-wash floor boards that run throughout the top floor. Stuffed teddies in muted tones and old fashioned toys like the wooden train set add to the aged feel, while warm wood furniture and soft lighting add warmth to the room. Classic tile and wainscoting (or subway tile if you can get it) are great in Victorian bathrooms. Claw-foot tubs are a must and the pedestal sink lends to the antique-beach feel.

CAPITOLA A RENOVATION by originalsim

C

apitola A is one of the few architecturally interesting EA-made homes in Sunset Valley. The exterior blends rough, horizontally stacked stone with bright green barn siding, and is capped off with an orange roof that has a dramatic, but broken A-frame roofline in the front. It’s beautiful even if the combined architectural styles and color scheme is reminiscent of the 70s. But this is where the beauty ends. The first thing that needed to be addressed was the ill-proportioned rooms with vast empty spaces on the ground floor. Clearly defined areas were created with furniture and architectural item placement, while still leaving room for Sims to move from one space to the other with ease. The single tile, windowless door used as the entrance was replaced by double sliding doors and moved to the kitchen and dining area. Planters were placed to separate it from the kitchen and mark it as a welcoming main entrance. The double-wide straight staircase— which jutted awkwardly into the living room and left unusable empty space below it—was replaced with a compact

16

Design

spiral staircase that not only saves space but adds beauty as well. Half walls and columns were added between the kitchen/dining area and living room to further define these areas without closing them off completely with a wall and arch. Some windows and doors were replaced or shuffled around in order to accommodate the new décor. The living room had one big glaring problem, and that was the placement of the fireplace. Fireplaces are traditionally (and naturally) focal points in any room. Shoving it into a corner made the space feel awkward and unbalanced. By moving it to the middle of the back wall and flanking it with identical windows, it’s a much more balanced, inviting and eye-catching space.

SIMplified Living  |  JANUARY 2012

The master bedroom was brightened up with creams and blues with wicker accents. The bed is most definitely the focal point here and is further accented by the wavy cream and blue wall pattern behind it. Darker creams, tans, browns and accents of bright green were used in both spaces to add continuity. Darker colors can often make a space feel smaller, but the size of these rooms support darker tones easily. Coordinating patterns and textures were used to create another layer of interest on furniture that has been mixed from different sets and expansion packs. Decorative items and some children’s play things were selectively added to evoke a homier feel.

The second bedroom is long and narrow and had the stark impersonal feeling of a guest room that was hardly used. With some creative furniture placement the room was converted to a youth room that sleeps two children and a baby with room to play. Bunk beds and the one-tile Little Tykes Dresser (from The Sims 3 Store) were used to save space. Rather than lining up the Imaginarium Kubo Book Shelving Unit along the wall, it was placed at a 90-degree angle to create a reading and play area. The toy chest was placed in the corner on an angle while the crib was centered on the longest bit of unbroken wall. A gender-neutral color scheme of yellows and greens was used to make the space feel light and innocent. 

On the second floor the hallway was converted to a den. This was only made possible by the added floor space from use of the spiral stairs. The wall was covered in a lighter wooden plank paneling with an art deco border, creating a neutral backdrop for the striped club chairs and colorful wall decorations.

This is the lovely house I got from Lissykin. It was my job to landscape it. Where to start?

Then I turn on the MoveObjects cheat. I find it an invaluable tool while landscaping.

18

Design

Putting a fence around the house and making a path to the house is a good starting point.

It’s always nice to connect the path to all the exits and entrance and to make your yard along those paths.

I raised the land a little here because I’m going make a flowerbed. (Victorian people loved lush flowerbeds.)

Surround with little stones. Try to turn them around a little so we get a natural effect.

SIMplified Living  |  JANUARY 2012

Victorian people loved statues; make a little foundation to perch them on.

I started with the outer layer of flowers and worked my way up.

Add some variation in your colors, whatever you like to match up. Plants in different heights work well in my opinion.

The finished product! Only the rest of the yard looks a little bare, time to dress it up!

Pets brought us this lovely tree container which I think looks lovely in a Victorian garden.

I added two trees for a nice sense of equilibrium and a nice place to sit. Don’t forget garden lights so your Simmies can enjoy their garden in the evenings, too!

The finished corner.

This corner of the house looks a bit bare too.

Maybe we can start with a little fence and add some big flower bushes.

Design

19

Victorian Gardening Tips

I always think it’s good to add some flowers with the same color and different height. It makes for a nice variety.

A good way to fill up a big empty chunk of yard is a pond. Start with an outline you like.

I usually add the River Rocks terrain paint alongside to define my pond.

Still looks a little bare, so find a nice spot along the side and start adding some rocks and brown terrain paint to sit your cattails on.

When you’re done, it should look something like this.

For the small strip of backyard, I chose roses, which were popular in those days. It’s a nice way to utilize this space.

Another thing the Victorians were fond of is fountains. I started with a small block of foundation where I put my fountain around.

Using the MoveObjects cheat, I placed four statues back-to-back and a medium geyser and dome fountain in the middle.

It’s time to further develop the land. I like using tile when I need straight paths.

20

Design

SIMplified Living  |  JANUARY 2012

Add some benches so your Sims can enjoy their surroundings.

A top-down view allows me to see which areas need a little more work. I also added a swing on the side of the house.

This part still looked empty, so I made myself a couple of straight lines where my garden will be.

Here’s the finished product. My goal was to make the landscaping so it would frame the house rather than ‘overgrow’ it. 

Again with the height of the plants: try putting some variety in there.

H

ave you ever had a client ask you to decorate their children’s room, where the children’s views were respected? Neither have I… until now. This was the first in my career and it was an amazingly and exhilarating experience to create their rooms, without parental influences. (Well there was one concession—but we’ll get to that later.) I was contracted by twin brothers Simon and Seal Sigmund. They married twin sisters Carolina and Catia. Both brothers’ wives gave birth to a set of boy/girl twins just a day from each other. The brothers, who moved into conjoined townhomes, contacted me to decorate their children’s dream rooms.

Design

23

Crazy Children!

Seal Sigmund, wife Catia, and twins Season and Sealie Season wanted her room to be home to a fairy— herself. We researched fairy homes and decided it should be filled with lots of growing plants, wicker, wood and stuffed mushrooms. She wanted her canopied bed to appear miniature, so I built her an oversized nightstand and placed it behind the bed. At night, when she looks up from her bed, she can pretend she is so tiny in comparison.

Sealie is an explorer. He wanted his room to be the captain’s quarters of an old sea vessel. The one he imagined sailing as he discovered new worlds and uncovered and recorded wondrous things. Snake skin in its perfection. Autumn leaves in the perfect color of orange. Worms measuring not 6, but 8 inches and the spying the first leaf falling denoting season change. He was also the first to discover the fishing hole surrounded by lizards.

24

Design

SIMplified Living  |  JANUARY 2012

Simon Sigmund, wife Carolina, and twins Lamar and Lili Lamar loves all things mechanical and moving, especially cars. He made models from clay at age 4 and by 6 all his push cars were rubber band twistpowered. By age 7 he disassembled the dryer to understand the spin cycle. He wanted his room to not only show his passion but workspace and room for his custom sized tools. The secret space, hidden by the wheel display, is a locking cabinet to keep his journals and ongoing projects from prying eyes.

Lili: I never met an 8 year-old so into horror movies. She has encyclopedia knowledge of every classic horror movie since 1983 (her parents’ cut-off date till she’s 14; then she can go back to 1963). Lili’s favorites are Jurassic Park, Arachnophobia, The Cat People and The Silver Bullet. Her parents were fine with the décor of her room with one concession. It had to be done in her favorite colors of pink and green, which she didn’t mind. Lili provided a piece of furniture, too: The director’s chair from her day on the set of Jurassic Park 5! 

GOTH MAKEOVERS by Rawr2019 Today I am here with Gunther and Cornelia Goth, one of the richest couples in Sunset Valley. I was notified by friends and family that these two were in dire need of a makeover. I wanted to give them a fresh

look without straying from their Gothic roots. Before I started the makeover, I asked both Cornelia and Gunther what they would like changed about their appearances. This is what they said:

Cornelia Goth I’ve always wondered what I would look like as a red head. Not too red and not too orange, a nice blend would be good. My sister says my hair makes me look mad all the time so I suppose a cut would be nice as well. My co-workers think I wear too much black, so maybe some different shades in my wardrobe. Oh, and I’ve never been that great with makeup; perhaps some assistance there would be greatly appreciated.

Gunther Goth First and foremost I think a nice trim would be good for the workplace. My own son had to tell me I didn’t look professional. Maybe some nicer clothes too...Cornelia says I look like a rocker more than a business man. If you think of any other changes you think could help get me promoted, please do them.

What’s Hot If That’s Not?

BACHELOR MAKEOVERS by mwjessica723 When Jocasta Bachelor came to schedule a makeover for her and husband Simis, I was a bit leery. I thought to myself: Had she gotten approval from Simis before approaching me? What were his thoughts on the couple getting a complete appearance overhaul? Most importantly: Would Simis “freak out” on me? Despite my apprehension, I sat down with Jocasta and we chatted for a bit. She seemed a little nervous, but I attributed that as part of her natural disposition. After finishing the

interview with Jocasta, I had a pretty good idea of how to approach this “couples makeover”: Practical but sophisticated, with a little bit of whimsy tossed in. I was still somewhat on edge, not meeting Simis Bachelor prior to the scheduled makeover session. Jocasta assured me that he was “on board” with everything and “excited” to get a new look. Skepticism aside, I had no choice but to dive right in. The makeovers are shown below, along with each of the Bachelor’s clear directions for me. Enjoy!

Jocasta Bachelor First of all, I don’t really like the color orange. Not sure why so much of my wardrobe has it.... Probably hand-me-downs or something. Could you somehow incorporate my favorite color—hot pink—into my new clothes, while still making me look grown up? That would be great. I would also like to get the brassiness out of my hair color, yuck! Ooo, and how about some brand new makeup, huh? Thanks so much!

SIMplified Living  |  JANUARY 2012

Simis Bachelor I need a new sweater! My cardigan is itchy and outdated, but most of all it’s OUT TO GET ME! Phew, now that I got that off my chest.... I would really like clothes that are comfortable but that don’t make me look like a slouch. I want people to take me seriously. Oh, one more thing: NO back-talking socks. They’re so annoying! 

CREAM ROSES ON SILK http://www.thesims3.com/assetDetail.html?assetId=4921292 I love the way this pattern has a 3D effect of making the rosettes look like they are actually embroidered onto the background fabric. Very versatile pattern, can be used on clothing, walls, curtains and some furniture items. Original pattern by Polysporin: psforalweddingpt

FG CK DIAMONTE BEADS ON IVORY SILK http://www.thesims3.com/assetDetail.html?assetId=4922494 This pattern is recolorable and looks great in any color. I like the way this pattern has no real symmetry to it. It looks great on any female clothing recolors, great as a wallpaper and curtains. Original pattern by fairygirl8000: RoseWeddingBeads

EA CK BRUSHED GOLD METAL http://www.thesims3.com/assetDetail.html?assetId=4922496 Used on sash of flower girl. It looks best on small areas whether it’s on clothing or an object. Original pattern by lolacat: spungold

LH CK WHITE SATIN STRIP WITH A HINT OF PINK http://www.thesims3.com/assetDetail.html?assetId=4921290 Used on shirts for groomsmen. This is a very versatile pattern which can be used for most things: clothing, furniture, curtains, walls, even looks great on floors. Original pattern by luckyheather: LH Shirt Fabric 6

EA RECOLOR CREAM LINEN-FABRIC http://www.thesims3.com/assetDetail.html?assetId=4921291 I was looking for a fabric pattern that I could recolor for a ‘linen look’ for the suits. I think this worked very well and when placed on those suits, the texture of the pattern gives the illusion of ‘real’ linen. Original pattern by EA.

EA CK CREAM GOLD AND PINK DIAG STRIPE http://www.thesims3.com/assetDetail.html?assetId=4922495 Used on child groomsman’s tie. The cream color of the suit brings out the cream coloring in the tie. The hints of pink in the shirt fabric are highlighted with the pink I added to the tie pattern. I used the gold as well as a separator for the other two main colors. Original pattern by EA.

GOLD EMBROIDERED WEDDING FABRIC http://www.thesims3.com/assetDetail.html?assetId=4919625 This is an obvious choice for a wedding dress. PSCK EDIT AND REUPLOAD OF POLYSPORIN’S LACE PAT PINK http://www.thesims3.com/assetDetail.html?assetId=4919627 This pattern gives the illusion of a top layer of lace with different colored cotton underneath. The bonus factor is the two recolorable channels. Original pattern by Polysporin: ps florallacept

EA DARK NAVY PINSTRIPE http://www.thesims3.com/assetDetail.html?assetId=4919626 I love a groom in pinstripes! This pattern adds emphasis to the satin stripes on the side of the trousers and I made the pinstripes gray to enhance the pastel colors of the groomsmen’s vests. Has four recolorable channels. Original pattern by EA.

EX GOLD METAL TRIM http://www.thesims3.com/assetDetail.html?assetId=4919629 I downloaded this pattern from the Exchange a long time ago and have no idea who created it, however I thank them for it. It’s a great pattern to use on smaller sizes of recoloring as the darker flecks through it give the rest of the pattern an effect of being shimmery. Original creator is unknown.

CHIC COLLECTION_LACE11 BY LLIHUABULLE http://www.thesims3.com/assetDetail.html?assetId=3146063 This pattern looks good on almost any female clothing. The colors are soft, it’s a feminine pattern, and suits anything from underwear to formal clothing. Used original creator’s pattern.

BMCK RUCHED GOLD RUFFLES http://www.thesims3.com/assetDetail.html?assetId=4927305 Used on the trim of the bustier. This pattern gives a very nice ruffled affect! Original pattern by BlueMurder: Compact Ruffles Small 

S

hannon has always been a shy and quiet girl, never knowing what to do with her life. She’s always kept to herself, either reading a book or keeping things tidy around her house. She was caught off guard when she was asked to be a model for SLM. “Me, a model?” she asked with a face full of red. She couldn’t believe someone wanted her, this quiet girl, in their magazine. She was nervous at first, but once she got her makeup and hair done, she lit up like the Fourth of July. We at SLM are very proud to have Shannon and her Agent Maniac on the team. 

Show-stopping Showcases by MissElpheba

I

’m   constantly amazed by the creativity The Sims inspires. When recently trawling thesims3.com website for inspiration, I came across talented builder WibbleLikeAJelly’s showcase thread, and was very impressed with what I saw there. Intrigued, I decided to find out what made this builder tick…

What inspires you to build in The Sims 3; where do you get your inspiration? Originally, I would say that I was inspired to build just by the game itself. Nowadays, I would say that I am inspired more by magazines, comments on the forum and other builders. Sometimes my inspiration comes from other sources though, for example, my build ‘The Lake House’ came from a song title.

of things right from the start, when the three of us, my brother included, started developing JDA Street (from the initials of our first names). I can remember begging my parents for months to get Nightlife… Oh, how it seems so dated now!

How long have you been building and do you have a preferred building style? I think I’ve been building ever since I first got the game, but, I only seriously started to build in TS3. I was amazed by all the creative possibility and I just thought I’d make the most of it. I’ve only been building well since rather recently though, I got a new iMac for Christmas last year so I’ve been able to run the game smoother, meaning more play time and more building practice.

How long have you been playing Sims games? I’ve been playing The Sims games since 2005 when I was nearly seven. My family moved house and when I first went over to my neighbor’s house I saw their son playing a game which I would later discover to be The Sims 2. I loved the building side

42

Sim Talk

My preferred style would have to be what I think of as “modern with a character twist”. I always use warm tones in my builds, which I think separates them from the average “black and white box” modern builds.

What EP’s/SP’s do you find you use most for building? Do you use store content?

What is your own favorite build from your studio, and why?

Since I’ve always just built for myself I’ve never really taken notice of what packs I use most, but now I am part of a request team, D.N.A., I think that’s about to change. I can say that the EP I use the least is World Adventures, since themed items don’t tend to fit my style of building. I’ve started to use the TS3 store. I love the extra content available, especially the premium items.

My favorite build from my Studio has to be The Lake House, purely just for its creativity and design. I am really pleased with how I was able to design the lot over the lake, although navigating the camera around was a bit of a challenge throughout the build. I love how the colors of the build tone with the natural landscape, and when I was landscaping, I tried to conceal certain parts of the house to make it flow out from the landscape. I thought that having this very rigid structure in such a flowing environment could have looked very awkward if it was just placed there with no transition.

Which do you enjoy most of all: building, decorating or both? Architecture being my passion, I would definitely say building is my favorite part of the project. I don’t mind the decorating stage, but when you’re working on a build on a larger scale it can start to get a bit boring after a while in my opinion.

How important is landscaping when designing a build? I think that landscaping is a very important part of building. Even with brilliant architecture a building can be let down by regimented or dull landscaping. When I’m creating gardens I always try to imagine how Sims would use it and create the spaces around that. I usually go for a more organic look when landscaping houses, as you can see in some of my lots like Rantona.

How long do you spend on a build on average? When I’m building I can spend any amount of time from three days to three weeks. I have even taken two months to finish one house (Alara 17). I’m especially proud of that one though.

Check out images of The Lake House on the next page!

Do you have a favorite build or builder in the Sims 3 community? I have to be honest and say that I don’t have a favorite builder. I think that there are so many who build in different ways, so it would be too hard to choose. I could be biased towards some of the people who really helped me attract attention on the forum, but that would be unfair. Instead, I’ll just say thanks to all of you, you know who you are! I would say that one of the most striking lots I have seen recently is Squaring The Circle, by Rutschgaga. I love the use of CFE and think that just for what looks like hours of hard work with the levelling tool, it deserves to be recognized.

With all this building work, do you still find time to play? If so what do you like most in the game?

WIBBLELIKEAJELLY’S TOP TIPS FOR BUILDERS:

I don’t find as much time to play as I’d always like to, but I do play often and it’s a welcome relief from building sometimes. I started what I wanted to become a legacy family before the summer, but I like change in my game, and I get bored with one family after a while. I did start a new game after that, but I find that if I don’t “engage” with my Sims in the first few days of gameplay, I just start over. I did actually attempt a Let’s Play over on YouTube, but that quickly became more stressful than fun, so I gave up on that. I’m sure that all this talk of giving up makes me sound like a quitter! Trust me, that’s not a bad thing in The Sims; you’ll only find you get a really good idea or game after working through tons of awful ones! 

Don’t be afraid if your work doesn’t look as good as everyone else’s. In time, and with a bit of practise you will be able to do just as good, if not better.

Studio: http://www.thesims3.com/mypage/WibbleLikeAJelly/mystudio Showcase: http://forum.thesims3.com/jforum/posts/list/478717.page

STOP THE PRESSES! Since this interview was conducted, WibbleLikeAJelly has become a featured member for his new build, Vista Peak Lodge. Congrats Wibble! Check it out!

Experiment as much as you can with cheats like CFE and MOO. Being confident in using building cheats can really improve how you look at other people’s work, and can open up a whole new world of possibilities in your own. If you’re stuck don’t be afraid to take inspiration from others, or from an image. Just remember that plagiarism is wrong, and if you’re caught stealing someone else’s work you will never be a respected part of the Community. I was deeply saddened a few weeks ago when I discovered someone had stolen two months of my hard work for themselves. Anyone is welcome to download and change a lot, just always get permission from the original uploader if you want to share it. Establish good friends in the community. I don’t know where I would be without some people on the Forums. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, just keep having fun when you’re working! If you can’t be bothered to work on your own projects, then why should anyone be bothered to download and recommend it?

THE SIMS 3 WORLD ADVENTURES EXPANSION PACK

W

orld Adventures seems to have a hot and cold audience; some love it and others hate it. While I am definitely a fan of this expansion, I can understand why so many others name this the worst expansion. The expansion appears to have had the highest number of glitches, causing anything from freezing to crashing. For example, my Sim took a trip to China and disappeared. She wasn’t the only thing

In my opinion, without those major glitches, there are only a few irritating features to World Adventures. Loading Times. Patience is required as you wait for your Sim to travel to and from a destination. Makeup Blunders. The expansion gives you some fun new eyeliners, but they are only available in Everyday Wear. In CAS, if you set Everyday Wear with the exotic eyeliner and th en go to set another Clothing category, the eyeliner is replaced, but unlike hairstyles, you can’t have more than one makeup style and Everyday Wear now reflects that with the replaced eyeliner.

to vanish; the user interface did as well. I could pan around on the screen with my mouse, touring beautiful Shang Simla, but that Sim went to Sim Heaven, completely irretrievable. I have also had instances where my Sim would need to take a particular photograph for a mission and the game would freeze. While these problems persisted for quite some time, EA did create patches that have fixed most of the issues with this pack since its release.

SIMplified Living  |  JANUARY 2012

Useless Hairstyles. Unless you are creating Sims to populate the new vacation destinations, the new hairstyles have limited use. They are very specific in theme, from safari hats and berets to rice hats and scarves, and I rarely find an opportunity to use them. Clothing options are a little better, but a majority of them fall in the same boat.

Adventure Missions. Each of the vacation spots has its own goals that help you earn Visa Points, which allow you to stay longer and also eventually be able to own a vacation home. I enjoy these, but I’ve heard many objections against the RPG feel of this feature. Yes, it goes against the sandbox mentality that makes up The Sims, but not as much as people claim. You do not need to complete the missions if you do not wish, and if you choose a mission you don’t like, you can discard it and get a different one.

The Sims 3 Buyers Guide: World Adventures Expansion Pack

I’ve mentioned my little pet peeves about World Adventures; now here is why I’m an advocate for this expansion pack: More Skill Building Time. One of my favorite things about travelling is the fact that you get extra time that you can use for skill building! When I create, I like to use cheats, but I don’t like to use them when I’m actually playing the game. The fun is in the challenge, after all. When you travel, the game essentially pauses while you are abroad, effectively adding days to your life. So bring skill books or your laptop and use that extra time to your advantage. When you can buy a vacation home, stock it up with non-portable items like the sculptor’s station. More Simoleons. Completing adventures is quite profitable. Not only from exploring tombs and finding loot like money bags, ancient coins or valuable gems, but also from rewards given by the Sim requesting the mission. My Sim has come home from traveling abroad richer than when he left (that same day)! To make your trips more profitable, I’d suggest getting the following Lifetime Rewards: Jetsetter, discounted travel, Prepared Traveler, an extra 3 days free, and Learner Relic Hunter.

Tomb Building. You can actually build your own tombs! It can be as simple as a hidden room in your old creaky mansion to a full blown dangerous catacomb of traps and puzzles. To access this feature, you need to use the cheat box. Hit Ctrl+Shift+C and the blue cheat box opens at the top of the screen. Enter “buydebug” (without the quotation marks) and a new Buy Mode category appears with a “?”. Inside you will find treasure chests, ancient coin piles, traps, and more for your tomb building needs. If you would like more instruction on how to build a tomb, you can visit my basic tutorial on my blog, Mom2Elias’ Simming Adventures. World Adventures has a lot to offer. If you have comments or have anything you would like to add about this expansion pack, we’d love to hear your opinion on our website. 

I

’ m sure that at some point or another, almost everyone who frequents the Sims 3 forums has heard of the legacy challenge, and possibly read some of the many legacies posted online. But few have such eye-catching images, flawless writing and excellent presentation as the one and only Elysian Skies – The Lumière Rainbowcy. For those of you unfamiliar with the concept of a rainbowcy, it is a variation of the legacy challenge. Each generation must have a color representing that generation – in the case of the Lumières, the founder Moon Spark Lumière) simply has pale skin, however her husband is a shade of pink, making this color the color of the generation. By the end of the challenge, once the tenth generation is born, the family as a whole will represent a vibrant rainbow.

52

Sim Talk

SIMplified Living  |  JANUARY 2012

Players can portray the color of the generation in any way, so long as it is obvious what the color is – for example, the family home could be painted the color of the current generation, or each generation could have the same colored clothing. The only limit is the player’s creativity! Aside from the rainbowcy aspect, there is another fresh twist to this legacy – the author, Jessu, has combined the Lumière’s tale with a fifty-foalchallenge – you see, Moon Spark is a horse owner, breeding her horse to create another rainbow within the household. This unique fusion results in a gripping tale, where there is no shortage of interesting reading. The story takes place in Appaloosa Plains, where Moon Spark has taken over her father’s ranch. In short, Moon Spark’s father has fallen ill and left for Champs Les Sims, leaving his daughter to tend to his ranch. At the time I am writing this article, the Lumière Rainbowcy is still in its first generation, leaving us plenty of time to continue being utterly addicted the story of this colorful family. Jess’ writing is flawless, her storyline unique and interesting and her overall presentation of the story outstanding. It truly is hard

to fault her, no matter how hard one looks through her work. But Jess’ success has not gone to her head – she still replies to comments and messages, and happily communicates with her readers. A touch of French charm is added throughout the site – Jess labels the chapter numbers in French, adds hints of French within certain chapters and the family name itself is French for light. Even if vous ne parlez pas français, you will be able to notice this brilliant touch of charm. 

If you’re interested in seeing the brilliance for yourself, you can visit http://elysianrainbowcy.wordpress.com/, or Jess’ personal blog at http://jessuku.wordpress.com/. I would highly recommend visiting both – I assure you that you won’t be disappointed!
