Thank You For Supporting our Chamber!

September’s Home and Business Expo was an exciting event with many different businesses from banking to electricity, insurance to pest control and much more. The Chamber raffle, sponsored by Chamber businesses, was very eye catching with prizes totaling over $1,000.00. We are grateful for everyone who helped make the Home and Business Expo a great experience for the members and public involved.

The Shred-a-thon will be held in the parking lot of The Mall at Sierra Vista on the same day as the Mini Expo. Shred-It will be available to assist with all of your shredding needs. This may be done for only $5.00 a box. There is no limit to how many boxes you can bring; however, you can only shred 2 boxes at a time to ensure everyone gets a turn. The Shed-athon will be held from 11:00am – 2:00pm.

The Congressional District 2 debate will take place on Tuesday, October 14th at Buena High School PAC. We encourage all of our members and the public to join us for this informative debate between the candidates. Remember, every vote counts! Ambassador Spotlight: Dawn Cussins Dawn Cussins Tell us about you and your current job. I work as the Sales Manager at Garden Place Suites and Gateway Studio Suites. I book the meeting room and help cater events. I’m in charge of the boxed lunch program and keep inventory on the food items. I love event planning and am very happy my GM, Jason McKnight, allows me to create new ideas for the hotels. He allows me to truly think outside the box. How long have you been and what motivated you to become an ambassador? In starting this job at the hotels, I was told being an ambassador was a part of the job. I had no idea what I was getting into, but for the first time, I understood what the chamber of commerce was and what it does for the community and I became interested in its workings. What qualities most contribute to being a great ambassador?

I would think what a good ambassador does is to work hands-on with the chamber and the community. To be seen as a support system to local business helping them to succeed. How do you benefit from the role? I think what I have learned the most is what the chamber of commerce is and what it does. I was never a “political” or “City Workings” kind of person. I didn’t know a single thing about how a city works, who runs it, etc., etc. I learned how important it was to embrace your city, to work in charity, and help a city to grow and help others to succeed. How does your company benefit from your participation as an ambassador? I meet all kinds of new people. I talk about our catering and parties they could have at our hotels. Some people never knew our hotel was even here. Exposure to the public and knowing what is going on in our town is important to any business. What was the best (most fun, most memorable, etc…) project that you have worked on as an ambassador? I can talk about the most memora-

ble. I think the Rookies Bar and Grill because the Mayor came over and asked if he could have lunch with me and Jason. I think the most fun I had was making a wreath for the festival of Trees at the mall. What is one thing about you that most don’t know? I was a special effects animator for Disney, Warner Brothers, and Dreamworks. I also worked for Ted Turner in his animation studio. I worked on many films like: The Pagemaster, Cats Don’t Dance, Hercules, Mulan, Tarzan, Osmosis Jones, and Spirit. Is there anything else you would like to add? The one thing I like about life is that I never know what new direction it can take me on. I learn something new all the time. In this chapter of my life I am learning about the workings of a city. In Los Angeles, where I am from, that would be a tough thing to do; but here on a smaller scale it makes it easier to learn.

Chamber to Host Glenn Hamer Presentation on Legislative Agenda Glenn Hamer will be speaking on legislative accomplishments over the past few years that have dramatically improved Arizona’s competitive standing. He’ll touch on issues related to tax reform, our regulatory system and civil justice issues. He’ll also give a sneak preview of what to expect in the 2015 legislative session. Glenn Hamer has been president and CEO of the Arizona Chamber of Commerce and Industry since 2006. He has overseen the organization's development into one of the most respected pro-business public policy entities in the state. In 2011, Hamer led the business community's successful advocacy for passage of a landmark economic competitiveness package, which was hailed as the most significant job creation legislation passed in the state in a generation. Glenn currently represents the Arizona Chamber on the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Public Affairs Committee and Committee of 100, and is a member of the board for the Greater Phoenix Black Chamber of Commerce, the Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and the Arizona Council on Economic Education. He is also Vice Chair of the Arizona Charter Schools Association, a member of Arizona Ready Education Council, and recently served as CoChair of Governor Brewer's Solar Energy Task Force. In 2013, Glenn was named a Most Admired Leader by the Phoenix Business Journal, and in both 2013 and 2014 Glenn was named Best Power-broker by the Arizona Capitol Times. Hamer has significant experience in energy policy. Before coming to Arizona, Hamer served as executive director of the Solar Energy Industries Association, where he advocated for the return of a residential solar tax credit, strong federal budgets for solar research and development and meaningful state policies to promote solar. Later, Hamer became director of business development and government relations for First Solar. Other positions Hamer has held in his career include chief of staff to former Arizona Congressman Matt Salmon, executive director of the Arizona Republican Party during a winning U.S. Senate race and as a legislative assistant to Arizona Sen. Board of Directors Spotlight: Rick Shelley, Chair Tell us about you and your current job. While not a native, I have been in Arizona over 25 years and in the SV area nearly 15 years. Dana and I live in Whetstone with our 2 terrific grandchildren. I have a Bachelor Degree in Business Management and Minor in Accounting. I am currently the General Manager of Horizon Moving Systems and have had the pleasure to work with the Horizon Team for going on 14 years. How long have you been and what motivated you to become a member of the Chamber board? This is my fifth year as a board member. I actually worked for the chamber as Membership Director in 2000 and when I left to join the Horizon Team I remained active on the then Member Services Committee and enjoyed helping to plan and participate in events such as the Business Expo and Christmas

Parade. Five years ago I was asked to run for a board seat and greatly appreciate the opportunity to serve and work with a great team. What qualities most contribute to being on the Chamber board? The desire to work for the benefit of our business community is probably the number one quality to serve on this board. Also, the willingness to be open to other’s positions, and to view issues from the perspective of how we can benefit all businesses and not just stick with the status quo. How do you benefit from the role? There is a great feeling of satisfaction when events and programs produce the desired affect and knowing that you are part of a team of volunteer board members and terrific staff to make good things happen. How does your company benefit from your participation on the Chamber board? Since the Dusenberry family and Ole Olsen started Horizon in Sierra Vista over 50 years ago, they created a mandate in our mission statement and actually stressed that particular portion of “Supporting

our Community”. That involvement has allowed Horizon to be part of the community and not just a company doing business here. What is one thing about you that most don’t know? Some people know but most may not know that Dana and I are raising two of my grandchildren. Although at times this has been of course challenging, it has changed both of our lives for the good and we both are super proud of Alexis and Eric. Is there anything else you would like to add? I truly believe that in good times and the more difficult days, a good Chamber of Commerce benefits all businesses regardless if you are a member or not. We work for the business community. Of course by being an active member, a business can multiply their return on investment by participating in the many educations programs, targeted events, networking, referrals, web presence and much more.
