The Congressional District 2 Debate was hosted by the Sierra Vista Area Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday, October 14th. Ron Barber and Martha McSally squared off in the debate held at Buena High School, bringing in over 500 people from around Cochise County, anxiously awaiting the battle for Congress. The Business Advocacy Committee came up with 13 questions for Ron Barber and Martha McSally. The questions were not revealed to anyone prior to the debate. A coin toss decided which candidate would answer the first question. The moderator and Chamber Board Member, Phil Vega, had a strong presence with the crowd, commanding respect towards both candidates. Applauding after the candidate’s answer, was acceptable, but not a second before. At one point, the timekeepers had to start the time over, due to a loud crowd. The debate lasted about 90 minutes. Ron Barber and Martha McSally gave their all to confirm or convince voters that they were the best choice for Congress. In the end it is in the hands of the voters.

We would like to extend our deepest Thank You For Supporting our gratitude to the Sierra Vista Police Department, Rangers and Buena High Chamber! School for their support and assistance with the Congressional District 2 De-

bate. It was a team effort, which helped make such a successful debate. If you were unable to attend the debate or would like to see the debate again, you will find it on the Sierra Vista Area Chamber of Commerce website www.sierravistachamber.org as well as the Sierra Vista Herald website, www.sierravistaherald.com. General election voting is Tuesday, November 4th. We encourage our Chamber Members to vote in all elections— remember every vote counts! Ambassador Spotlight: Sabra Albritton Sabra Albritton Tell us about you and your current job. I am the Common Area Coordinator for The Mall at Sierra Vista. My responsibilities include temporary tenant accounts, marketing and events. Temporary Tenants operate at the mall for 3 years or less and usually operate off of a cart or Kiosk in the common area, although they may operate in a store when one is available. Marketing duties include updating our website and Facebook accounts and indoor and outdoor promotional events. There are over 50 events held at The Mall at Sierra Vista each year, which all need to be coordinated with dates, mall location, set up and tear down of tables chairs and stage when requested. Although my duties can be challenging at times, I love working at The Mall at Sierra Vista where

everyone is like family, from the mall staff to the store employees. How long have you been and what motivated you to become an Ambassador? I became an ambassador in August, with the encouragement of Mary Tieman. I have been attending Business at Twilights for the past 4 years and I felt it was a great way to support the Chamber and local businesses. What qualities most contribute to being a great Ambassador? A great ambassador loves their community, supports local businesses with integrity and respect, is dedicated to the success of Chamber and other businesses, and represents both their employer and the Chamber in all activities. How do you benefit from the role? I have the opportunity to learn and grow professionally from other business people in the community, and it is a great avenue to give back to my community. How does your company benefit

from your participation as an Ambassador? My participation allows for The Mall at Sierra Vista to be recognized by the community as an actively involved Chamber member that supports other businesses as well as the Chamber. What was the best (most fun, most memorable, etc…) project that you have worked on as an Ambassador? I am currently involved with the planning of the Chamber float for the Christmas Parade. What is one thing about you that most don’t know? I grew up in Bisbee with 7 sisters and 2 brothers.

CopperPoint—Combating Flu Season Impact on Business Top health officials in Arizona are calling on state citizens to get vaccinated for the flu, according to a report from The Associated Press. Arizona Health Services Director Will Humble told the news source that officials are testing flu specimens to determine which strains are circulating, as well as which ones may be resistant to drug treatment. With the state’s Department of Health Services reporting that 12,000 people in Arizona were hospitalized or sickened by the flu during 2013, businesses may want to take flu season seriously. In addition to sapping worker productivity, the flu and other illnesses can cost businesses dearly in sick days. In fact, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the flu costs the economy nearly $10.4 billion alone in direct costs for hospitalizations and outpatient visits for adults. For businesses that must contend with the approximately 111 million workdays lost due to the flu each year, the cost comes to nearly $7 billion.

Understanding the illness As outlined by the Maricopa County Department of Public Health, influenza, commonly known as the flu, is a contagious respiratory illness caused by a virus. While many cases are mild, others can become extremely severe, resulting in hospitalization or death. “Some people, such as older people, young children, and people with certain health conditions, are at high risk for serious flu complications,” the organization stated on its official website. “The best way to prevent the flu is by getting vaccinated each year.”

Promoting vaccinations The CDC maintains the best way for businesses to reduce the impact of flu season is to promote vaccinations among employees. There are two strategies businesses can use, according to the CDC. One strategy involves hosting a flu vaccination clinic in the workplace. “To minimize absenteeism, employers frequently offer onsite seasonal flu vaccination to employees at no or low cost to their employees,” the CDC states. “This option can work well if the employer has an on-site occupational health clinic. If you don’t have a clinic, pharmacies and community vaccinators can be contracted to provide seasonal flu vaccination services onsite.” This might be one avenue for businesses to consider, as it will all but guarantee that workers are given an opportunity to enhance their immune systems against influenza. However, if this isn’t an option, the CDC also recommends educating employees on where they and their families can receive flu vaccinations in the community.

Avoiding the spread of illness There are also a number of preventative measures businesses might consider besides vaccinations. For instance, businesses may want to inform employees that they should avoid close contact with people who are sick. Additionally, asking workers who are sick to stay home can help prevent the illness from spreading throughout the workplace. Other simple preventative measures include reminding workers to cover their noses and mouths when they cough and sneeze, as well as encouraging employees to regularly clean and disinfect their work stations. Asking workers to thoroughly wash their hands on a regular basis also can help prevent the spread of germs during flue season. Written by: Safetynetplus

7 Steps to Using Social Media As a startup or small business owner, you know there’s a lot to accomplish with limited resources. Traditional marketing can be a drain on your funds. Social media marketing, on the other hand, is pretty low-cost and gives you a direct line to current and prospective customers. Social media offers small businesses a cost-effective way to reach their customers. #1: Do Your Homework Behind every exceptional social media campaign is a great strategy. #2: Coordinate Your Social Channels If you treat each social media platform as a stand-alone effort, your success will be limited. Your networks should work together to help you achieve your goals. #3: Get Started, but Start Small You’ve defined your target audience, you know where to reach them and you’ve optimized your other marketing touch points. #4: Listen and Share

Social media conversations are happening all around in real time. #5: Create Your Daily Plan

With a steady stream of content in the pipeline, you’re primed to post and engage on social media. #6: Boost Results With Social Advertising

If you want to accelerate your social media performance, it’s worth your time to explore paid advertising options. #7: Lather, Rinse, Repeat

The last step is the most critical: Measure and analyze your results. For more information on using social media to help your business go to: http://www.socialmediaexaminer.com/socialmedia-guide-small-businesses/
