Thank You For Supporting our Chamber!

June 2014

Congratulations Leadership Sierra Vista! By Deanna La Velle, Executive Director

I would like to congratulate our 20132014 Leadership Sierra Vista Graduating Class. The graduation ceremony was held on the evening of May 21st at Pueblo Del Sol Country Club, with Keynote Speaker J.D. Rottweiler, Cochise College President. Thank you to all that made this evening possible! A big thank you goes out to our sponsors, Sulphur Springs Valley Electric Cooperative, Inc., Wayland Baptist University-Sierra Vista, Wells Fargo Home Mortgage, and McDonald's. I would also like to give a warm thank you to our business community for giving their employees this grand opportunity, as well as our Leadership Committee, and staff for working so hard this year to make this program such a rewarding experience for our participants. Good leaders make the world go around, and we are privileged to have outstanding leaders here in our community. The Sierra Vista Area Chamber will be holding it’s 16th Annual Leadership Sierra Vista Program this fall. Once a month the class members spend a day visiting a variety of local agencies

and learning about subjects important to the overall well being of Sierra Vista and Cochise County. The experience includes a special leadership orientation and then an in-depth look at such diverse topics as Fort Huachuca, local government, health care, education, law enforcement, tourism, and border issues. Join us as we strive to develop the future leaders of our community while providing additional skills and knowledge for individuals, with the potential for advancement, within their own organizations. Class size is limited and the application deadline is August 8, 2014.We truly appreciate the way in which our community leaders have embraced Leadership Sierra Vista. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact the Chamber of Commerce.

Chamber to Host Political Events The votes we cast in the election booth are important decisions and almost always have an impact on the livability of our neighborhoods, our business community, and the health and safety of our family. It is important that we work to ensure that our community is encouraged to participate in elections in an educated and thereby meaningful way. It is not good enough to merely go out there and push the button of the candidate whose name we recognize, or who shook our hand at our local events. We must make decisions based upon the candidate’s qualifications, record of community and public service, as well as their stated responses to questions that we as a community feel are important. A well organized and executed candidate forum can help us, to encourage our community to make the most of their right to vote. It will help in getting to know the potential decision makers and to identify individuals who are suited to meet the needs of our community. It is also an opportunity to get commitments from the candidates so that, no matter who wins the election, the community can urge the winner to keep his or her promises that were make during the forum once they are in office. The Sierra Vista Area Chamber encourages you to participate in our upcoming candidate forums. On July 9th, we will be hosting our Sierra Vista City Council Candidate Forum at Buena High School beginning at 5:30pm. This event will be televised and highly publicized leading up to the event. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear what the candidates have to say on important issues/topics! Coming up on August 6th, the Chamber will be hosting its Sierra Vista Mayoral Forum. This event has already sparked an interest around town! We are expecting a large turnout and hope you will become part of the audience. Just like the City Council Candidate Forum, this event will be held at Buena High School beginning at 5:30pm, and will also be televised and highly publicized. We invite you to also attend our Candidate Meet & Greet this year at PDS Country Club. All of the candidates in our city, district, and state will be invited and encouraged to attend. The event to be held on August 12th from 5:30pm7:30pm, will be your chance to shake the hands of our candidates and meet them in a social setting. This event will fill up quickly so please RSVP by contacting the Chamber office at 520.458.6940 or visit us online at www.sierravistachamber.org. Lastly, we will be holding a candidate forum for our Congressional District 2 Race. The forum will be held in September, and we will let you know the date as soon as it is confirmed. I hope you will attend these important events where you will be able to gain more knowledge about our candidates and how they feel on given issues. It is extremely important that we encourage our community to get out there and vote. Make your voice be heard his election season!
