Thank You For Supporting our Chamber!

May 2014

Congratulations to our 2014 Winners! By Deanna La Velle, Executive Director

It was a great evening on April 10 at our Annual Awards Gala. The evening began at the Thunder Mountain Activity Center during cocktail hour. Our businessmen and women were in the company of our “celebrities” as they bid on wonderful silent auction items that were generously donated by members of our business community. There was quite a bidding war for the Ray-Ban sunglasses donated by Dr. Daynes, of Daynes Optical, and the Large Gift Basket donated by the Mall at Sierra Vista.

Congratulations Glen!

We then moved on to our Ambassador of the Year Award. Our ambassadors are given points throughout the year for their participation at Chamber events such as Ribbon Cuttings, our Health, Wealth, & Lifestyle Fair, Business Expos, etc. At the end of the year, the points are tallied and this is how the Ambassador of the Year is chosen. Glen Cobb was named this year’s winner. Her proven dedication to the Chamber and the Ambassador program is astonishing.

Next, we announced our Business Person of the Year- Elsie MacMillan. When our nomination committee met to discuss this year’s recipient, Elise’s name came up right from the beginning. She is most definitely deserving of this prestigious award, and we congratulate and thank her, for all she does for our community.

Ambassador Spotlight: Glendalynn “Glen” Cobb What qualities most contribute to being a great Ambassador? To genuinely care for those around you is paramount in being a great Ambassador. An ambassador must be kind and able to put aside personal aspirations to benefit the whole. I have been an Ambassador since May 2012. I love Sierra Vista and tend to be a “people person”. To have the opportunity to support my community and see my “neighbors” prosper is my motivation.

How does your company benefit from your participation as an Ambassador? When I can learn new or improve my skills, whether personal or professional, the benefits are farreaching.

What was the best (most fun, most memorable, etc…) project that you have worked on as an ambassador? I have truly enjoyed working on the Christmas float the last two years. There is a wonderful sense of accomplishment for a job well done, working in concert with a large group of people from many different backgrounds and skill sets. What is one thing about you that most don’t know? I am Native American and an identical twin. Is there anything else you would like to add? I love being an Ambassador, and having the privilege of representing the Sierra Vista Chamber of Commerce. We have a few positions available and welcome talking to anyone interested in joining our wonderful group.

Business Spotlight– Pepsi

What began in Safford in the 1950s laid the groundwork for this family ran business, Southeastern Bottling Company of Arizona, Inc. dba / Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company of Safford. Ms. Marge Schade, my Grandmother, can recall like it was yesterday, the early mornings of personally delivering Pepsi bottles to the local businesses. Then picking up every last bottle in the evening to be hand washed, refilled, and loaded for the following day’s deliveries. Now, some twenty years later, they have expanded to serving Cochise County. To be a part of Pepsi it is vital for the individual to be highly self-motivated with strong interpersonal skills. Mr. Dan Crews, Area Sales Manager, is privileged to have the opportunity to directly interact with customers to build of those long-term relationships. “I am a people person! For me, to be able to meet new people every day and interact with new clients / friends makes this position a lot of fun! As my wife says, ‘I am a social butterfly’.” One of our involvements we are most proud of takes place on July 4th, in coordination with the Rotary, for the fireworks display. We also participate in the Relay for Life and the NAMI March for Mental Health.

Game On! Sierra Vista Game On! Sierra Vista will kick-off at 6PM Friday, May 9 through Saturday, May 10, at the Murr Community Center, Fort Huachuca. It will feature a variety of gaming activities and displays, from role playing and strategy to video competitions and fantasy board games. In addition, there will be a collectibles component, including comic books and cards. Last year’s Game On! Sierra Vista became a hugely popular event thanks to our business community and the presence of Fort Huachuca and it’s thousands of active duty personnel. As well as local businesses, the event has attracted gaming and collectible industry vendors from Tucson and Phoenix!
