It’s so important for a ministry to remember the number one reason why they do absolutely everything! Ministry fundraisers must reflect that motive. The number one reason is not to raise money but with every opportunity point people to Jesus Christ. God brings in the money. Yes, even raising money offers an opportunity to point people to Christ. People who don’t know Christ; but want to help a ministry, are so often the people God sends to us so they can hear “why”. They are the ones who ask, “Why do you do this?” “Why do you think this raises so much money?”
There’s no other way to explain it. Our fundraising efforts grew, not because of us, but because of Him. When Sheridan House began to focus on pointing people to Christ as the reason for our ministry and the Blessor of our efforts, God began to take our fundraising endeavors to levels that caused the world around us to take notice. We were letting His light shine and people turned to him! There’s no other way to explain it. Our fundraising efforts grew, not because of us, but because of Him. Every special event that Sheridan House does must give honor and glory to God! That’s why people like Rick come to Sheridan House and ask about Christ. He saw something different. Rick saw the hand of God blessing an event. The key to any successful fundraising event is to give “Glory to God.”
It is typically the first question I get asked, especially when meeting with ministry leaders. Why do you hold large fundraisers like the Goliath Gauntlet and the annual Sheridan House Golf Tournament?
The primary answer is Jesus. Sheridan House made the decision years ago not to accept government money and that was at a time when it represented a large portion of operating funds. It was a decision to trust God and that is when amazing things started to happen. Yes, events support Sheridan House, actually the funds raised by special events represent 28% of our operating budget. But it is much, much more than that. Let me tell you a story about a young man who, at the age of 26, started to attend golf committee meetings at Sheridan House. Not because he wanted to be involved, but because it was his job working at the golf course that hosted the Sheridan House golf event. He believed in God but did not know who Jesus is. He had hosted literally thousands of golf events and sat on numerous charity golf event committees but he noticed right away there was something special about the men on the Sheridan House golf committee. They weren’t looking for personal notoriety and this was not a “networking opportunity.” They were simply “all in” on the mission of Sheridan House – personally and sacrificially. The clincher was at the end of every meeting they took prayer requests and he noticed a man named Rick Hornsby actually writing them down! The young man realized Mr. Hornsby was serious – he was really going to pray for these people, not just now but later too! He realized then their faith in Christ was real. This 26-year-old man did not yet know Jesus but he was seeing Him work in and through people and it was a game changer.
I was that young man and in the summer of 1994 I walked into Bob Barnes’ office with a question about Christianity. I walked out knowing who Jesus is. He is my Lord and Savior [Romans 10:9-10].
Romans 10:9-10: If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved. That is the why. Yes, events like the Goliath Gauntlet raise necessary funds that allow us to operate the children’s homes at Sheridan House. But more importantly, events introduce new people to the “why” we do what we do. There’s not an event where someone doesn’t ask, “Can I talk to you? We need help.” We organize events because people in the community need to know we are here to provide Answers for Today’s Family… for their family. For Christ’s sake. God bless,
