Issues pushed under the rug? We can help.

Issues pushed under the rug? We can help.

Issues swept under the rug eventually pile up and become a stumbling block in our lives. In order to bring about healing, we must face our issues head-on. Speaking with a counselor can help us pull out the issues we’ve been trying to hide and learn how to effectively manage them and cope in spite of them.

Issues pushed under the rug never go away. And, they never just sit there. Instead, they have a way of festering, like dirt and germs in a wound. If I want my wound to heal properly, it needs to be cleaned out before infection can set in. The longer we wait to deal with the issues – the “dirt” – the more we risk suffering damage from the infection. Issues should never be ignored, but dealt with sooner rather than later. Talking and praying through the issues will help clean the wounds we sustain as we live life. This is one of the benefits of “one-anothering” that Scripture talks about.

God has created our minds with an inner capacity for healing. Therapy is a learning experience that can change the way we think and remember events that have affected our lives, and these changes can last. This process can bring about a great sense of peace and joy to the human heart. “For as he thinks within himself, so he is.” (Proverbs 23:7)

One of the most difficult questions for a couple to discern is: When is it time to go for marriage help?” When you sense something wrong with your car, you take it in for help immediately. Is your marriage less important?

6th Annual

GOLIATH GAUNTLET Obstacle Course Race APRIL 13TH We often push issues under the rug when we are tired of dealing with them on our own; we can’t fix them alone, but we exhaust ourselves trying. Look to God instead! He encourages us by saying, “Come to me, you who are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matt. 11:28). Do not copy the world as it tries to solve its problems apart from God. Instead, “be transformed by the renewal of your mind” (Rom. 12:2). Lay out your issues before your God, search His Word for truth, seek help from Godly advisors. Be different from the world and seek to purge your sin rather than hide it. Ask God to search your heart (Ps. 139:23). He promises to be with you every step of the way. (Is. 43:2)

Answering Hard Questions With The Truth. So many questions cross our minds throughout the day. Some are easy (blue or red shirt today?) and some are incredibly difficult (why did this have to happen to me?). This year, Sheridan House is taking some tough questions and providing the answers all of us need, basing them on the truth from God’s word. Check out every issue to read the answer to each month’s question!

One of the things children fear most began to happen to 13-year-old Eryn: her parents’ marriage was heading toward divorce. Simple yet unresolved disagreements led to consistently ineffective communication. They lost sight of their mutual goals and of the fact that they were on the same team. As a last-ditch effort, they decided to try counseling and made an appointment at the Michael Jeffrey Peters Memorial Counseling Center at Sheridan House. Their counselor provided an unbiased perspective and jump started their change of focus. Instead of looking at the problems, they put their attention on solutions. Their relationship was restored! They now have a healthy marriage, and through her experience, Eryn was inspired to become a counselor. She now works at Sheridan House and counsels families facing challenging situations.
