Welcome

We’re delighted to share our new season with you. Our spring and summer will bring new and exciting productions of Pride & Prejudice and The Effect to our stages, as well as Camelot: The Shining City, a spectacular theatrical adventure featuring over 150 local performers. In the autumn, we’re delighted to announce an electric new production of Shakespeare’s heartbreaking Romeo & Juliet, and in December we bring the epic American musical, Show Boat, to the Crucible stage. In the Studio, we’ll see the regional première of The Distance, which was a hit for The Orange Tree Theatre last autumn. Meanwhile, the Lyceum and the Studio are packed with the best in touring work including Jesus Christ Superstar, Matthew Bourne’s The Car Man, The Octonauts and Judy - The Songbook of Judy Garland. As you may know we’re a registered charity. From the autumn season we’ve made a change to our public dress rehearsals – admission will be based on a minimum donation of £1.00. If you’re able to join us for a PDR, you will be making a vital contribution to supporting our ongoing work, as well as experiencing the thrill of a final rehearsal. It’s an exciting season ahead and we can’t wait to get started. We look forward to welcoming you soon.

Pride & Prejudice By Jane Austen Dramatised by Simon Reade

Thu 14 May – Sat 6 June Elizabeth Bennet is quick witted, intelligent and idealistic. In a society bound by class and wealth, she longs to break free from expectation and marry for love, not for financial convenience. When a wealthy young bachelor and his society friends arrive in the village, her world is turned upside down. Whilst her sister appears to make an instant match, Lizzie’s happiness seems out of reach. Can she find love or will her own prejudices get in the way? Jane Austen’s beloved romantic comedy is filled with wit and passion – a perfect escape for summer.

Denys Edwards Players present

David Copperfield by Charles Dickens Adapted by Ian Mullins

Tue 11 – Sat 15 August Following their artistically acclaimed production of Mansfield Park last summer, Denys Edwards Players return to the Crucible Studio with another classic, David Copperfield, the novel that draws from Charles Dickens’ own life. Scrupulously faithful to Dickens’ original, Ian Mullins’ powerful adaptation brings the characters vividly to life and tells the story of the orphaned boy who grows up to discover love and happiness, heartbreak and sorrow, amid a cast of eccentrics, innocents and villains. Performed to critical acclaim in theatres around the country, it is a tale of joy and sadness, melodrama and comedy, which is suitable for all the family. This is an amateur production.

Presumption

Tue 7.45pm £5.00

Tue 6 – Sat 10 October A table, six chairs. Precariously carried, precisely placed. Start the scene: after the dinner party guests have gone. Stop. More furniture required. Start again. From the top. Tom and Beth. Together for seven years; buying stuff, sharing friends, acquiring memories. Two people gradually talking less, but slowly wanting more. It’s a story about love. Not romantic, thrill of passion love, but everyday, what shall we have for dinner, expecting to go on living together – well what else would we do? – love.

I am asking you both, as my oldest, closest friends, to accept the decision I have made. And I am sorry if it’s difficult to accept. I can assure you, it has been difficult to make. Good friends should be there for one another – no matter what. But when Bea returns home after five years abroad having made a bold choice about her life, old friends struggle to support her. Or even to understand. One night in Brighton, things threaten to slide into chaos... A sharply funny play about motherhood and fatherhood; about keeping control and letting go. ★★★★ ‘An excellent play... premiered in Charlotte Gwinner’s pitch-perfect production... highly recommended’ The Independent
