STAYING FABULOUS AT 50!

In 2021, we’ll celebrate the 50th year of the Crucible. It’s time for us to get ready for the big birthday, so this autumn we’re going to give this glorious Sheffield icon a facelift and an upgrade. This will help us continue to create the best work for our stages, giving you a great night out now and for the next 50 years to come!

UPGRADING BACKSTAGE

The Crucible’s lighting and sound equipment will be upgraded (some of this is over 30 years old). This will improve our technical capability, allowing us to continue to create incredible work like Life of Pi and Guys and Dolls. We’ll also make a vital reduction to our environmental impact with changes including replacing the famous starry sky with energy efficient LED fittings.

IMPROVING OUR FOYERS We’re going to make our foyers more comfortable and throw our doors open to welcome people throughout the day and into the evening. There’ll be more seating throughout, free Wifi for work and play and our café will be transformed, creating a warm and relaxed place for light bites and catch ups, cuppas and sweet treats.

HELP US STAY FABULOUS Help us make these changes by sponsoring a new LED twinkle light for £150. You’ll receive a personalised gift certificate and your support will be acknowledged on the Crucible foyer supporters’ board for 5 years – it’s our way of saying thank you for the vital difference your donation makes. Please visit the website or contact Siobhan Halpin on 0114 201 3868.

Quentin Crisp was one of the most memorable figures of the twentieth century. Openly gay as early as the 1930s, Quentin spent decades being beaten up for refusing to be anything less than himself. His extraordinary courage and wit inspire to the present day. Naked Hope, Mark Farrelly’s hugely-acclaimed solo play, is a glorious, uplifting celebration of Quentin’s life – and the urgent necessity to be your true self.

From Ground Up and McGill Productions in association with Sheffield Theatres Following its sell-out run in autumn 2016, this story of four ordinary men in extraordinary times returns to the Studio. Eighty years ago, on the 12th December 1940, Sheffield was subjected to a bombing raid which aimed to wipe its world renowned steel works off the map. A single bomb reduced the Marples Hotel, which stood in Fitzalan Square, from seven stories to just 15 feet of rubble. Only one of the ten compartments in the hotel’s cellar withstood the blast. ACCESSING SHEFFIELD THEATRES We create and distribute our brochure in a number of different formats upon request. If you would like either a large print, braille or audio version of the brochure please contact our Box Office or email access@sheffieldtheatres.co.uk Facilities at Sheffield Theatres include: Level entrances to the main foyers and lift access to each floor of both the Crucible and Lyceum. The main Box Office, located in the Crucible, features a lower counter. There are spaces in each auditorium for wheelchair users, as well as a number of seats with level access, which can be booked by calling the Box Office. Assistance dogs are welcome in public areas of the theatre, including the auditorium during the show. Alternatively we can take care of them during the performance. We ask that you pre-book your dog if you would like us to do this. A loop system is available at the Box Office counter and we operate an infrared system in the auditorium. Accessible toilets are located in both buildings, the Crucible also has a Changing Places toilet.

Audio Described Performances and Touch Tours Audio description provides a commentary of the action on stage, interspersed with the actors’ dialogue. Description can be listened to via a headset. Some Audio Described performances are preceded by a Touch Tour offering the opportunity to familiarise yourself with the set, props and costumes in advance of a performance. British Sign Language Interpretation Box Office staff can advise on the best seats for a good view of the interpreter and stage. Captioned Performances Captioning converts the dialogue and sound effects on stage into text which is displayed on a screen on or near the stage. Relaxed Performances Audience members can move around freely, leave and enter the auditorium as needed, the lights never go completely dark and sound effects are softened. Dementia Friendly Adapted to meet the needs of people living with dementia. Our team are trained Dementia Friends and we’re proud to offer a Dementia Friendly experience.

If you would like to find out more about our access facilities and performances contact us on access@sheffieldtheatres.co.uk or call the Box Office. 40
