Showcase Projects 2018 has been another successful year for Shaylor Group, delivering projects across a range of sectors up and down the country. From residential apartments to office spaces and leisure facilities, we’ve enjoyed working with existing clients and also forging new relationships. In the residential sector, two exceptional projects included Birmingham based Beaufort House and Greenford’s Atrium Point. Both schemes drew on our expertise in converting and extending existing office blocks to provide city centre apartments. We relished the challenge of creating Atrium Point, one of the largest stand-alone buildings in Greater London set within an eight acre landscape.

Following our successful delivery of easyHotel Birmingham in 2017, we returned to deliver two further hotels for the brand in Sheffield and Leeds. In Sheffield we delivered the renovation and refurbishment of a former five-storey department store to create a new 131 en suite bedroom hotel.

Showcase Projects In the London Borough of Ealing we were excited to fully refurbish and modernise an existing hostel, The Poplars. The existing building was converted and extended and we worked collaboratively with the client to develop a phased programme to allow the safe relocation of residents and minimise disruption.

Adding to our experience in the education sector we were appointed to support the expansion of Newstead Academy to enable the school to offer additional places for local children. A singlestorey extension was constructed, providing a new commercial kitchen, increased hall space, eight classrooms and office spaces. Aligned with the school’s objectives we had a sustainable focus throughout delivery, minimising the project’s environmental impact alongside the school’s carbon footprint.

Framework Appointments With frameworks and relationship led contracts making up more than 80% of our business, we were thrilled to gain a number of significant appointments throughout 2018. We are delighted to have secured a place on the University of Oxford’s Minor-Intermediate Works Framework. The framework will cover a selection of fabric renewals, general refurbishments and service upgrades. Further success includes our appointment to the new Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) Estates Contractor Framework. This will see the delivery of minor works to DWP’s network of Jobcentre Plus offices and refurbishments of the department’s corporate offices.

As the year came to a close we finished on a high adding the Pagabo National Medium Works Framework to our growing list of appointments. Running for three years, the framework will cover, but is not limited to, new builds, extension, refurbishment and maintenance requirements.

On Site in 2019 2019 will be another exciting year with flagship projects lined up throughout the UK. In the heart of Birmingham city centre we are delighted to have started delivery of a new DoubleTree by Hilton hotel. The project will see us bring the existing Royal Angus hotel back into active use through the construction and fit-out of a 186 rooms. Heading to the capital, we have recently broken ground on our first project for ethical developer Pocket Living. Situated in Barking, the project will see the transformation of an existing brownfield site into three separate one bedroom apartment blocks. At the home of British motor racing, construction of The Silverstone Experience is currently underway. Celebrating the exciting past, present and future of Silverstone, the experience is a new technology driven visitor attraction opening in 2019. The project, which will transform a WWII Hangar into a 4,000m² exhibition space, is expected to attract over 500,000 visitors a year.

Awards Success There have been several additions to our trophy cabinet this year, with our people, projects and practices securing 10 coveted awards and finalist positions. As a business we are incredibly proud to have been named in The Sunday Times Top Track 250 league table in addition to The Sunday Times BDO Profit Track 100 and The Financial Times Future 100 report. On project level, Greenford based Atrium Point was named as a Silver winner of a Considerate Constructors Scheme National Site Award.

Individually, two members of our team secure finalist places in coveted industry awards. Project Manager Andy Ryan was named as a Finalist in the Secondary Education category of the prestigious Construction Manager of the Year Awards. Alongside this, Assistant Site Manager Rachel Toor successfully gained a finalist position in the ‘Rising Star’ category of this year’s Construction News Awards.

Internal Achievements In 2017 we launched the Shaylor Group Academy, designed to assist employees in the advancement of their construction skills and knowledge. Following the completion of a ten module programme, we were delighted to see our first cohort graduate from the Academy in late 2018. We were thrilled to welcome Mayor of the West Midlands Andy Street to deliver an informative and inspiring Keynote speech at our SiteLink conference. The highlight of the afternoon saw Andy present the Shaylor Group Awards alongside honouring the Academy graduation.

In July, 40 employees visited The Silverstone Experience for this year’s Desk to Site event. The day was enjoyed by all, proving a great opportunity for support staff to step away from their desks and increase their understanding of site activity. 2018 also saw us re-accredited to the prestigious Investors in People Gold Standard in recognition of our people and practices.

Our Community We are committed to supporting our local communities throughout our projects and beyond. Building lasting relationships with clients, schools, universities, charities and businesses is a key element of our success and we are dedicated to making a positive difference. In 2018 the Shaylor Foundation celebrated its first anniversary. It’s been a busy year for the charity and we are proud to have supported a number of exceptional causes including CRASH, The Lighthouse Trust, LoveBrum, Birmingham Children’s Hospital, Suited for Success, Keeling School of Dance, West Midlands Construction UTC and more. Clockwise from L Shaylor Foundation football team takes part in five-aside tournament; Students from the West Midlands Construction University Technical College visit Gilders Yard, Birmingham

Developing the next generation of construction professionals, we are close supporters of the West Midlands UTC. As part of our activities with the college, we were thrilled to welcome Year 12 students to our Gilders Yard project in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter for a guided tour around site.

Our Community Further involvement with the UTC includes delivery of career talks and presentations covering industry job roles, project management and apprenticeships. We have also attended a number of career fairs and have provided work experience opportunities for several students. It has been a great year for royal visits, with His Royal Highness Prince Charles attending the Birmingham Institute of Forest Research in Staffordshire. Marking 12 months since the experiment began, the Prince received a guided tour around the climate change research facility led by the University of Birmingham. In April we marked an exciting day for Gilders Yard, as Mayor of the West Midlands Andy Street attended site to celebrate the project’s commencement. The occasion was marked by a ground breaking ceremony where Andy learned about the complex refurbishment of the former J. Ashford & Son building taking place alongside the construction of two new apartment buildings.
