Chase Johnson was spending his last official day at the Community Café rolling plastic silverware. As the diners came in around 4:30 p.m., Johnson smiled at them as he said hello. Some he recognized as regulars, others he hadn’t seen before. “I think the most important thing about working here is remembering that everyone deserves respect,” Johnson said. “They may be having a hard time right now, but we can give them a good meal and sometimes that’s all you need to feel better.” Johnson, who graduated from Smith-Cotton High School Saturday, has been volunteering at the Community Café since his sophomore year. When he’s not at the café, he’s working as a host at Colton’s Steakhouse, participating in National Honor Society, DECA, math or science clubs, or playing basketball with his younger brother. But volunteering is where his heart is. “Some nights we’ll have more than 100 people show up for dinner, other nights is only 60,” he said. “It can be a little crazy, especially if I’m the only one here, but it’s really rewarding.” Salome Taylor, or “Ms. Taylor” as she’s known around the café, said Johnson “has a good heart in him. In the two years I’ve known him he always treats the people here like they’re human
beings. He doesn’t overlook them and always chats with them.” In the fall, Johnson will attend State Fair Community College and take classes at the University of Central Missouri. He plans to be a high school or college math teacher, though he doesn’t plan on quitting volunteering anytime soon. “It’s going to be really busy in the fall with college,” he said. “But I don’t think I’ll ever stop volunteering. A good friend of mine is taking over as the student leader here so I know I’ll be back to see everyone and roll some silverware.” Johnson said he would miss the people at the café most, Taylor especially. “You meet a lot of people here and get to know their stories,” he said. “Before I started volunteering, I didn’t know what an impact a simple thing like a hot meal could have. But everyone is so appreciative and it really effects you.” Taylor said she’d miss Johnson’s work ethic, noting he often came in if no one else was available. “If he wasn’t working (at Colton’s) he was here,” she said. “He’s always willing to lend a hand or help if needed.” “I don’t think volunteering is something I really set out to do,” Johnson said. “I just sort of fell into it and really loved it.”

“Be Burn Aware”
(NAPS)—Homes are the sites of thousands of burn injuries to children every year, including scalds and fire-related injuries. Many of these incidents could have been easily prevented by following and implementing some basic safety tips. Shriners Hospitals for Children® is addressing this issue by focusing its annual yearlong burn awareness campaign on teaching children to “Be Burn Aware,” especially at home. “At Shriners Hospitals for Children, preventing burn injuries and providing burn awareness education is an ongoing, yearlong effort,” said Peter Armstrong, M.D., chief medical officer, Shriners Hospitals for Children. “Our campaign, ‘Be Burn Aware,’ focuses on teaching children ways to avoid burn injuries at home.” The campaign introduces two new child-friendly characters—Boots and Brewster—a caped, cuddly bear and a googly-eyed teapot. The engaging duo is featured in activity books designed for children ages 3 to 12, and also a poster. In the materials, the pair leads children through the various rooms of a house, pointing out dangers and how to easily correct or avoid them. The new materials are available at no charge in both English and Spanish at www.burnawareness.org. Tips to Keep Children Safe • Use electrical outlet covers. • Have an escape plan, including two exits from each room, in place. Practice Boots and Brewster are featured in using the plan. Have a designated meeting the campaign “Be Burn Aware,” place at a safe distance from the home. which is designed to teach burn • Install an appropriate number of prevention tips to children. smoke detectors—one near each bedroom, one at the top of each stairway and one near the planned escape route. • Teach your children that matches are not toys. • Store all flammable liquids, chemicals and cleaners out of reach of children or lock the cabinet. • Replace damaged electrical cords. • Do not leave lighted candles unattended. • Always supervise children in the bath. • The water in a child’s bath should not exceed 104° F. Set your water heater no higher than 120° F. • Keep all hot items and anything electrical out of reach of children and away from edges of tables and counters. • Keep pot handles turned inward; use oven mitts or pot holders. Keep clothing from coming into contact with flames or heating elements. • Follow instructions and cautions for heating items in a microwave oven. • Do not handle hot items while holding young children. Shriners Hospitals for Children is a system of 22 hospitals dedicated to improving the lives of children. Four of the hospitals are focused specifically on pediatric burn care. Anyone concerned with keeping children safe can visit www.burnawareness.org for important burn prevention tips and information on how to order the free materials, in English or Spanish. My favorite pond has been yielding bluegill plenty big enough to filet for the 20-odd years I’ve been fishing it. The last time I visited it, I tied on a weighted black wooly worm just as I have every other time I’ve been there. But this time something was different. No matter whether I cast close to shore or toward the middle of the pond — I can toss a fly a long way if I want to — only rarely did a keeper bluegill suck in my offering. I stuck to my guns for 45 minutes and might not have stopped then had I not come to a section of the pond where trees on the bank made conventional fly fishing difficult. A light spinning outfit rigged with a 1-16thounce inline spinnerbait was close at hand, so I picked it up and made what was by this time a half-hearted cast. A jumbo bluegill inhaled the little spinnerbait. My second cast produced the same result. Then the bass took over. This pond’s bass are an exceptionally vicious lot, and it’s impossible to keep them off anything that shines or gurgles. This wouldn’t be a day-ruiner for most people, but when I’m fishing for bluegill, I want to catch bluegill. Thirty minutes, 10 bass and only four more bluegill later, I stopped to think things through. The most significant difference between the spinnerbait and the weighted fly was that the former stayed at roughly the same depth during the retrieve and the latter didn’t. I switched to an unweighted wooly worm, and the battle with the pond’s super bluegill began in earnest. I went home a happy angler indeed. I didn’t coin the term “one method Pete,” but, like many of you, I do have specific fishing tactics I sometimes overuse. Weighted black wooly worms are only the tip of the iceberg. Crappie fishing in the spring means suspending a black/chartreuse tube jig beneath a float, and crappie fishing in the summer means tight-lining minnows directly beneath the boat. Round one with black bass is going to be fought with either a white spinnerbait or a black 6-inch plastic worm. My catfish angling efforts replace what with where and when, namely in a river or stream water level’s rising. Using a scoped .22 rifle for squirrels and a .410 shotgun for rabbits are the only two onemethod Petes I have when hunting season rolls around. They are absolute even when I know some other method might put more game in the bag. In one method Pete’s defense, every outdoorsman’s first-out strategy achieved that sta-

tus, because he or she can make it work far more often than not. It really does make sense to start the day with something you have timeproven confidence in. The problem with one method Pete is he’s all too often hard to put aside. That was my problem on my bluegill fishing trip. Standing on that pond bank, I was — or should have been — well aware that big male bluegill are either actively feeding or else guarding their nests from dawn until dusk at this time of the year. On such familiar water, it shouldn’t have taken me more than 10 minutes tops to figure out that there was something wrong with the way I was presenting my fly. To make matters worse — or at least more embarrassing — I had the means to defeat onemethod Pete syndrome within easy reach. I’ve always been afraid that it might be illegal to have only one rod and reel in one’s possession when in, on or near any body of water. On this occasion, the fly rod I most wanted to use and the aforementioned spinning outfit weren’t the options I should have tried long before I did. There was also a custom made outfit consisting of an 8-foot fly rod blank fitted with a spinning reel handle and guides laying in the grass beside my tackle shoulder bag. For bluegill, I use this combo to cast a fly suspended beneath a small float into the wind. (For the record, I know how to use a conventional fly rod to punch a fly into the wind, but it’s hard work, which is something I try hard to avoid while fishing.) Unfortunately, in the grand old tradition of do as I say, not as I do, I’d tied an identical weighted black wooly worm to the terminal end of the hybrid rig. Switching fly rods taught me absolutely nothing about why I wasn’t catching fish. Looking back on that morning and countless others like it, I can’t help but reach a couple of conclusions. One of them is that, while one class of rod and reel is sometimes superior to another on a given day, deciding to stubbornly stick with what you want to use is seldom the primary cause of a fishless outing. The other is that being stubborn about the size, color, style or any other characteristic of the lure you choose or neglecting to vary the way you present that lure can make all the difference no matter what species of fish you hope to catch. Now if I can only remember them at least until my next fishing trip. gjsa@sbcglobal.net

shows will have to recast now that "Cougar Town" is going forward. "Cougar Town" is the latest project to join TBS's growing slate of original series. In July, TBS will launch "Sullivan & Son," a new sitcom starring comedian Steve Byrne and executive-produced by Vince Vaughn, Peter Billingsley and Rob Long. This year also will include the debut of "Wedding Band," a new scripted comedy series starring Brian Austin Green, Harold Perrineau, Peter Cambor, Derek Miller, Melora Hardin, Jenny Wade and Kathryn Fiore. *** Q: Can you tell me what Ving Rhames is doing now? I haven't seen him in anything in a while. -Derek L., via e-mail A: Ving is all set to star in the new David E. Kelley medical drama that is slated to premiere on TNT in summer 2013. The series, called "Monday Mornings," is based on the book by neurosurgeon and CNN chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanja Gupta, M.D. The show is set in the fictional Chelsea General Hospital in Portland, Ore., and Ving plays the hospital's trauma chief. It also stars Alfred Molina, Jennifer Finnegan and Bill Irwin. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc. FRIDAY

Q: When will my favorite show, "Rizzoli & Isles," be back with new episodes? -- Fred D., via e-mail. A: Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander will return for their third season as Det. Jane Rizzoli and Dr. Maura Isles, respectively, on Tuesday, June 5, at 9 p.m. ET/PT. The highly rated TNT series will air 15 all-new episodes. And if you need to catch up on seasons one and two -- or just refresh your memory -- both are now available on DVD for your viewing pleasure. *** Q: I signed that petition you mentioned in a previous column to help keep "A Gifted Man" on the air, and I was wondering if it helped? Will CBS renew it? --Bonnie A., Norfolk, Va. A: Sometimes online petitions work ("Friday Night Lights," "Jericho" and "Chuck" were saved from early cancelation by rabid Internet campaigns), and sometimes they don't. In the case of "A Gifted Man," it didn't; CBS decided not to renew the drama for a second season. Also on CBS's chopping block: "CSI: Miami," "Rob," "Unforgettable" and "NYC 22." *** Q: For the longest time, I couldn't even find "Cougar Town" on the TV schedule, then it returned, and now I hear it's been canceled. Is that true? -- Stacie R., St. Paul, Minn. A: While it's true that ABC has opted not to renew "Cougar Town" for a fourth season, Courteney Cox and gang will indeed be back for a new season -- TBS has picked up the series and will begin airing new episodes in early 2013. As of now, it's assumed that all cast members will be making the move with the show to TBS. However, Dan Byrd had already booked a role on the new untitled Louis CK sitcom pilot, and Josh Hopkins was set to star in NBC's "Lady Friends." Both

Moments In Time The History Channel
• On May 31, 1859, the massive clock-tower bell known as Big Ben, located at the top of the 320-foothigh St. Stephen's Tower, rings out over the Houses of Parliament in Westminster, London, for the first time. Just two months later, however, the heavy striker cracked the bell. • On May 30, 1911, the inaugural Indianapolis 500 is run at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Indiana. With the exception of a break in 1917 and 1918 for World War I and from 1942 to 1945 for World War II, the 200-lap, 2 1/2-mile race has been run every year.
• On June 1, 1926, Norma Jeane Mortenson -- who will become known as the glamorous actress and sex symbol Marilyn Monroe -- is born in Los Angeles. During World War II, a photographer "discovered" the naturally photogenic Norma Jeane while she was working in a California munitions factory. • On May 29, 1932, the so-called Bonus Expeditionary Force, a group of 1,000 World War I veterans seeking cash payments for their veterans' bonus certificates, arrive in Washington, D.C. One month later, that number had swelled to nearly 20,000 strong. • On June 3, 1956, Santa Cruz, Calif., authorities announced a total ban on rock and roll music at public gatherings. Just two weeks later, Time magazine reported on similar bans enacted in Asbury Park, N.J., and San Antonio, Texas.
• On June 2, 1967, Capt. Howard Levy, 30, a dermatologist from Brooklyn, is convicted by a general courtmartial of willfully disobeying orders. Levy had refused to provide basic instruction in skin disease to Green Beret medics, saying it would be used as a "tool of political persuasion" in Vietnam. He did 26 months hard labor and was dismissed from the service. • On May 28, 1987, Matthias Rust, a 19-year-old amateur pilot from West Germany, takes off from Helsinki, Finland, and travels undetected through more than 400 miles of Soviet airspace. After Rust landed his small Cessna aircraft in Red Square by the Kremlin, an American diplomat in the Soviet Union joked, "Maybe we should build a bunch of Cessnas." (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.
