Golden Agers Win Olympic Gold
(NAPS)—Getting older doesn’t have to mean getting out of the game. Consider, for example, the Celadrin Tigerettes Senior Olympics Women’s basketball team. Ranging in age from 64 to 74, the team won the Senior Olympic gold medal at the last national games in Houston. In fact, they are seven-time Senior Olympic champions, and are poised to defend their title at the 2013 national games in July. Mavis Albin, Mary Bendsen, Wanda Blailock, Loretta Hill, Nikki Leader and Catherine “Kitty Sparacello, united by their love of basketball, have compiled a Michael Jordanesque record of 185 wins Basketball grandmas will compete for against a mere five losses while their eighth National Senior Olympics barnstorming the country to title this summer. compete against other mature cagers. They have even played the Harlem Globetrotters in a pickup game. In fact, they will be featured in a PBS documentary, “The Age of Champions, www.ageofchamp ions.org, scheduled for release this summer. Along the way, they’ve become role models—not only for their peers but for younger people who find inspiration in their prowess. Former NBA sharpshooter Dennis Scott, who once held the record for the most three-pointers in one season, volunteers as their coach. “These ladies are phenomenal. They’ve got so much energy and are just hilarious with their practical jokes. They really do put their hearts into the game, said Coach Scott. “It’s incredible that they do what they do at their age. They are in great shape and this gives hope to people who fear the day they’re ‘too old.’ These grandmas definitely got game. “We all started playing basketball when we were young and we’ve just stuck with it. Training is very important to maintain your stamina and muscle tone but we also have our little secrets that help keep us going, said team captain Albin. “As a team, we believe in proper nutrition, daily use of nutritional supplements and an active lifestyle. “Diet and exercise are usually sufficient if you’re in your 20s, but at our age, a little extra help is needed. The ladies and I do our research on what works for us. Supplements such as fish oil, omega3s and Celadrin help prevent inflammation and stiffness. We also watch our diets and make sure we’re getting enough whole grains, fruits, vegetables and protein. If we start making poor decisions, it will show up on the court, added Albin. Celadrin Joint Flexibility & Relief is an all-natural blend of special fatty acids clinically shown to promote joint health, reduce knee discomfort and improve flexibility. I’ve always been reasonably good at trivia, or so I thought. My friends and I used to go down to Applebee’s on trivia night and win various items emblazoned with beer logos; we have enough polo shirts and hats that we could probably successfully convince someone that we worked for Coors. So I was excited when I got the news that they wanted me for the Sedalia Democrat trivia team. “Travis, the Democrat newsroom is fielding a team for the Kiwanis Trivia Night,” wrote editor Bob Satnan, “We saved a spot for you.” Here it is — my chance to show the full-timers that I could dispense pop culture knowledge with the best of them. I’m not good at a lot of things, but my head contains useless facts in abundance. Besides, the questions at an event like this should be sub-game show easy, right? The Sedalia Democrat team was called The Know It Alls, based on a team shirt that declared that reading the newspaper would allow one to do just that. It’s a little uncreative to have a team name that’s just the name of one’s business, so that’s what we did when they put us on the spot. The team member limit was eight and the Know It Alls used all of their available space. I understand that John Hansen, entertainment writer and Sedalia Democrat bowling champion, was not pleased that he had to sit out. I have no doubt that he would have been a fine addition. The first round of questions fell under the decidedly vague category entitled “America.” And the questions were actually pretty tough — I’ve got to hand it to the Kiwanis Club, they tracked down some reasonably challenging questions. The table seemed to be collectively surprised at this fact. And in that round was a question that made me think that I wasn’t just there wasting a spot on the roster. Do you know what boulevard Fort Knox can be found on? Well, we didn’t really either. I supposed, at first, that it was something severely obvious like Gold Boulevard. I sat on that for a second and then I looked over the question again — Aha! The question admitted that the street suffix was boulevard, and the federal government probably likes alliteration
Page 5
as much as the next highly departmental organization, so it’s probably Bullion Boulevard! The rest of the table made generally Travis agreeable noises at McMullen this revelation and in the face of not actu—— ally knowing the DEMOCRAT answer we went COLUMNIST with my guess, which was the best guess that we had. And when we got the answer sheet, we were right. The United States Bullion Depository is on the intersection of Gold Vault Road and Bullion Boulevard. And that’s how we answered a few of the questions that night: We didn’t actually know as many of them as would have liked so we all threw out a few reasonably plausible answers and voted on them. And that strategy was serving us relatively well — second place was ours to lose. First place belonged to a well-seasoned team called the Key Notes. The deficit was not significant at any point, and we kept hoping for a category that would allow us to catch the Keys. We thought, perhaps, that the television category would be our time to shine. I couldn’t help but laugh when I saw that there was a question about “The Big Bang Theory.” My mother, Teresa is a huge fan and would have known in an instant what night is designated by the characters of that show as “Pizza Night,” but this McMullen did not and neither did anyone else on the team. We eventually agreed on Wednesday but we were ultimately wrong. In the last few rounds, we were making progress on the leaders one or two points at a time. Even a commanding 12 out of 12, 100 percent performance in the final round, “Miscellaneous,” only brought us within four points. The Know It Alls ended the evening with 65 points, second only to the Key Notes’ 69. They played a great game and didn’t trail any of the other teams at any time. Gold, silver and bronze plastic medals were awarded to the top three teams accordingly. But know this, Key Notes: The next Kiwanis Trivia Night is in July and we’re coming for you! We’re going to be training the brain and bringing the pain! Ohhh yeaaaaah!

FARM REAL ESTATE AUCTION 218 acres m/l off Ash Road Stover Mo
From the Junction of Highway 52 & N in Stover, Missouri: take N Highway north 2.8 miles to Ash Road. Turn left (straight on gravel when N highway turns back north) on Ash Road and continue a short distance to sale site on right. Sale will be held on site just inside the gate. Watch for sale signs:
SAT., FEB. 9, 10:00 AM This 218 acre m/l farm offers 103 acres m/l of farmland with the balance in scattered timber. There is electricity to the farm, in addition to a well and a pond. The farm is easily accessible with ½ a mile of highway frontage on N in addition to nearly ½ mile of gravel frontage on Ash. There are currently entrances off N on the north side of the farm and off Ash on the south side of the farm. The west side of the property could be farmed as it is terraced and currently in improved grass. The lot where the machinery was kept has been cleared and, with a little dozer work, could be ready to be put into service as pasture. Lastly, the property offers several nice building spots and some of the best hunting around. TERMS: The opening bid on the farm will be only $1,200.00 per acre. Any bid at or over that amount, and the farm sells to the high bidder. A down payment of $20,000 will be required sale day, with the balance due at closing to be held on or before Monday, March 11th, 2013. Sellers will provide owner’s title policy, buyer is responsible for any lender’s policy, taxes will be prorated and the closing fee will be split 50/50. The Hughes family of Hughesville was praised in the 1882 History of Pettis County, being named as part of the founders of Cooper County and among “those who braved the perils and endured the hardships of a primitive life to establish the civilization that we now enjoy.” Samuel Hughes came from Tennessee and settled near Pilot Grove in Cooper County in 1824. His son, Thomas J. Hughes, was born on Jan. 23, 1829. Thomas married Sally C. Taylor, of Cooper County, in 1853. The couple had four children — Isaac Newton, William, Susan and Lucy — before Sally Taylor died in 1866. In 1876, Thomas Hughes moved to Pettis County, where he raised his children on his 160-acre farm near Hughesville. He later moved to Kansas. Isaac Newton Hughes, who sometimes identified himself as Isaac and at other times as Newt, spent much of his time in Sedalia. He held a variety of jobs, working as a farmer and as a landscaper planting trees. Hughes was known as a “hard drinker” but had, according to the Sedalia Democrat, “never been in any serious trouble.” During the 1890s, Isaac Newton Hughes married a widow from Cooper County. The wedding was held at a downtown building later known as the White House Restaurant on Osage Street. The couple moved to Bunceton, a small town in Cooper County, where they managed a restaurant. Hughes later moved to Jefferson City and worked as a prison guard while Warden Starke was in charge of the Missouri State Penitentiary. When Starke left his post, Hughes lost his job. He then moved to East St. Louis, Ill., where he worked as a laborer at the National Stock Yards. He kept in touch with his friends in Pettis County when they visited the stock yards to conduct business there. On Jan. 9, 1902, the Sedalia Democrat printed an article titled “Is Hughes Guilty?” which detailed the Jan. 6 robbery of the National Stock Yard Bank in East St. Louis. The thieves dynamited two safes and escaped with $10,400 worth of property. Some of the take, about $4,000, was in the form of unregistered government bonds, the property of bank president C. Gordon Knox; $3,500 of the take was in postage stamps. The remaining $2,900 was in cash belonging to the bank’s depositors. The Democrat story continued to report that Hughes, then 40 years old,
Page 11
was at that time ensconced in the jail at Belleville, St. Clair County, Ill., on a charge of robbing the bank. County Sheriff Kickham described Rhonda Hughes as a “wellChalfant educated” man who “speaks with a frank—— ness that is convincDEMOCRAT COLUMNIST ing” while protesting his innocence. Hughes claimed that at the time of the robbery he was at home in bed, sound asleep, after spending the early evening “out with the boys.” He gave a more detailed account of his actions to a reporter from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Hughes stated that he had left his job at the stockyards at 4:30 p.m., went to the Stockyards Exchange to get his pay, stood in line 30 minutes before receiving his wages, and then left the building. As he was leaving, he met assistant Chester Stewart and told him he was leaving work since he felt sick. Hughes took a street car to his boarding house at 122 St. Clair Ave., a residence above Flynn’s Saloon. He said he stopped at Flynn’s to pay a bill, walked east to a nearby drugstore where he purchased quinine and pills, then returned to the saloon and had two drinks of whiskey. Apparently feeling better, Hughes purchased raw oysters at Mike O’Day’s grocery store. When he returned to the boarding house, he asked Mrs. Lizzie Moulton to prepare them. At 7:30, Hughes ate the oysters, then he and another resident of the boarding house, John McHugh, went down the block to Workingman’s Saloon, managed by John Scully. Hughes and McHugh had squabbled the night before, and Hughes said he bought McHugh a drink as a way of apologizing. Hughes spent some time in the boarding house office with janitor Pete Scully, where they drank some beer. Sometime between 9:30 and 10 p.m., Hughes went upstairs, spoke with the African American woman who worked there, then went to bed in the same room as a boarder named Pat. Hughes’ story provides ample alibi witnesses who could confirm his whereabouts on the night of the bank robbery. The reasons for his arrest will be the subject of next week’s column.
