Bob Satnan/Democrat Larry King has translated his professional experience and knowlege into a free vocational training program for low-income residents available through the Salvation Army. By Bob Satnan
Larry King believes in a hand up, not a handout. The Sedalia resident is helping local low-income residents acquire knowledge and skills that will help them become self-sufficient and good providers for their families through a program he has created, launched and teaches at the Salvation Army. SABER — Salvation Army Battling Economic Recession — is a free vocational training program that has already seen success. Six people participating in the pipe fitting/ plumbing program have been placed in jobs, even though they haven’t completed the 12-week course. “The way I developed the program, I want to do six weeks of in-class training and six weeks of in-shop, hands-on training,” King said. He created the course based on his professional experience working in the field, “and by buying books and educating myself.” When King launched the inaugural program a few weeks ago, 22 people signed up. He now has 10 left. “I don’t pull any punches, I don’t lie to them and tell them it’s easy work because it’s not,” he said. “It’s hard work, it’s dangerous work, but it pays extremely well.” But King teaches his students more than pipe fitting and welding. He also educates them on job skills such as interviewing and appearance, “things that give them a little better chance of getting hired,” he said. Salvation Army Major Mark Haslett had wanted to launch a vocational training program but never could find anyone who would volunteer their time to do it. King rang bells for the Salvation Army at Christmas and got to know Major Sue Haslett, who told King he needed to talk with her husband about his idea. “Without Salvation Army, it just wouldn’t have happened,” King said. “Salvation Army is the best program I have worked with because they care about people and try to help as many people as they can.” For every hour of classroom instruction he provides, King requires his students to do an hour of community service. It’s part of his “give back” mindset. He also teaches them to be financially responsible, “because a lot of construction workers live paycheck to paycheck. In construction, often it is either feast or famine. I am teaching them that when they are making good money, they need to set some back.” King said he grew up quite poor, but was able to graduate from Moberly Area Community College with an associate of arts degree. He took economics and accounting classes. “I already knew construction, so I wanted to learn the business end of it,” he said. Upon graduation, he earned a scholarship that would have paid for his next year of college, “but I ran out of money, so I had to ei-
ther go back to work or let the family starve,” he said. So he moved to Texas, where it took him three weeks to get a job, then five weeks to get the first paycheck. He said he lost 40 pounds in the process, “but I survived and it made me stronger.” King’s curriculum has a strong safety focus because of a workplace injury that requires him to use a cane to this day. “You have to be (safe), because it only takes a moment of carelessness to cause a lifetime of grief,” he said. “The majority of people who get hurt on the job, they don’t hurt themselves, somebody else ends up hurting them.” Which is what happened to him. King had flagged off an area to keep anybody from walking through the zone where scaffold boards were to be lowered. “Instead of lowering it into the flagged-off area, (a worker) lowered it directly over me,” King said. The worker hadn’t tied the boards down, and one slid off and hit King, who suffered compression fractures, ruptured discs and bulging discs, as well as permanent nerve damage in his left leg. While the SABER course’s classroom work can be done at the Salvation Army facility at 1200 E. Broadway Blvd., shop space and equipment are needed for the balance of the program. Students are using King’s personal tools, so everyone must take turns, which slows down the learning. Mark Haslett believes there is a job market for plumbers, electricians, woodworkers and carpenters. “I believe in America. A lot of the things that skilled tradesmen do has been shipped to other countries. I believe charity begins at home,” he said. “Everybody is crying about the high unemployment rate, but look at how many jobs have gone overseas because somebody wants to maximize their profits at somebody else’s expense.” King, who said pipe fitting is simple “once you get the basics down,” hopes to train 150 to 200 people each year, including those who have been incarcerated. “People who have been released from institutions already have two strikes against them,” he said. “A lot of companies won’t hire them. In construction, they don’t care, as long as they can do the work. All a lot of them need is a little education and an opportunity.” Haslett said his goal is for the SABER program to provide the best possible outcome. “Somebody can come here as a client needing assistance, they go through a training program, they get a job, and they go from client to self-sufficiency to donor,” he said. “This is brand new, and for some people it might seem like a foreign experience, but it is going to get results,” Haslett said. “It is already getting results.”

CELEBRITY EXTRA
Q: My husband said he read somewhere that Breckin Meyer is leaving "Franklin & Bash" because he has a new comedy on TBS. Please tell me that isn't true. -- Kellie K., via e-mail A: The only part that is true is that Breckin does indeed have a new comedy called "Men at Work" on TBS, which premieres Thursday, May 25, at 10 p.m. ET/PT. The multicamera comedy, which Breckin created, writes and executive produces, stars Danny Masterson, James Lesure, Michael Cassidy and Adam Busch. Breckin told me a bit about his new show when we spoke the other day: "Honestly, it's a show based on my life and the embarrassing relationships I've had. It's about four guys who are all at different stages of their lives relationship-wise, and they have each other's backs. It's based on me and my friends." As for Breckin making a cameo, he played coy: "I don't know -- we'll see. There might be an Alfred Hitchcocklike walkthrough. Hopefully we'll have some better guest stars than just me." Speaking of guest stars, as "Franklin & Bash" gears up for its second season -- premiering Tuesday, June 5, on TNT -- Breckin revealed: "We have an unbelievable line of guest stars this season. Sean Astin plays a superhero. Seth Green and Eric Mabius come on as the 'Bizarro' Franklin and Bash. Cybill Shepherd guest-stars. And we actually get to meet Mark Paul Gosselaar's mom this time around, who's played by Jane Seymour." *** Q: When will my favorite show, "Rookie Blue," be returning for another season? Please say it hasn't been canceled! -- Olaf D., St. Paul, Minn. A: "Rookie Blue" will indeed be back for its third season on Thursday, May 24, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on ABC. Now entering their third year on the job, our five rookie cops have learned
Breckin Meyer
to overcome the sophomore curse -knowing a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. Having seen the premiere episode, I can tell you that it is indeed one that fans won't want to miss! *** Q: I love everything that the talented Sarah Chalke does. When will she get her own show? -- Jason R., via e-mail A: Sarah is slated to star in the new ABC comedy called "How to Live with Your Parents for the Rest of Your Life," in which Brad Garrett and Elizabeth Perkins play the aforementioned parents. Sarah plays Polly, a recently divorced single mom who moves in with her eccentric parents, Elaine and Max. The show is set to premiere this fall. *** Q: I am hooked on "Once Upon a Time." Will it be back for a second season? -- David T., St. Louis A: As of this writing, no official word has come from ABC, but you can bet the farm that the top-rated drama series, which has smashed viewing records each week, definitely will be back for another season. Mighty turkey slayer surrenders Scott fails to fill his tag
When I walked into a local pharmacy about a week ago, one of the women behind the counter said, “This is a bad turkey season.” A wave of panic swept over me. Had she been following me? Did she work for Homeland Security? A millisecond before I bolted for the door, she explained that she was talking about the turkey season as it had been unfolding on her family’s farm. Six experienced hunters had spent all or part of the first week of the season hunting her property and had bagged only two gobblers. The litany of reasons for their dismal lack of success sounded like a mirror image of my own experiences. My little piece of turkey hunting heaven lies about a mile beyond a gate secured by a padlock to which I’m the only turkey hunter with a key. A chore road makes covering the first three-quarters of a mile easy. Or at least it does if it’s not too muddy. It was too muddy opening morning. I trudged a half mile or so and then decided to set up along the edge of a just-emerging corn field. It shouldn’t have been too much of a concession, because I’d seen turkeys there many times. Technically, I saw several gobblers, but only because it’s possible to see a long ways across more than 250 acres of open ground. It’s just as well that it’s illegal to use rifles to hunt turkeys in Missouri, since none of the toms were anywhere near being in range of my trusty .30/06. I was able to drive to the end of the chore road the next time I hunted. I walked across the field, set up just inside the edge of the timber and waited for daylight. Two gobblers and four hens flew down into the field 150 yards from where I sat. When it became obvious the birds were determined to go in the wrong direction, I turned up both the volume and the ferocity of my calling. My attempts to imitate a hen turkey saying unkind things about the small flock’s dominant hen must have worked, because the birds changed course and headed my way. The hens worked their way well into shooting range, but the gobblers hung up about 80 yards out. An eternity later, one of them joined the hens. I missed him. (I later discovered that my sight, which I hadn’t checked before the season like I tell other hunters to do, was out of alignment by almost 2 feet.) Saturday morning, I decided I’d pick a good spot for a silent ambush and then stay put until 1 p.m., if that’s what it took. I watched a near-constant parade of out-of-

range turkeys from sunrise until about 10:30, when a small jake blundered into my trap. I gunned him down with nary a trace of remorse. Monday morning of the second week, something weird happened — a gobbler actually responded to my calls. Unfortunately, he was on top of a steep-sided ridge on the opposite side of a running creek. I slipped on the muddy bank and slid to the bottom on my back. But not to worry, the older I get the more often the ground jerks itself out from under my feet. I waited until the tom resumed gobbling, and then did made a not entirely successful attempt to cross the loose rocks that covered the riffle without sounding like an entire herd of elephants. With the turkey loudly begging someone to come and shoot him, I crawled up the steep slope until I was as close to the top of the ridge as prudence would allow. Twenty minutes later, the gobbler was still refusing to come to the edge of the ridge top where I could see him, despite his vocalized enthusiasm for the dulcet tones of my call. Once again ignoring the advice I give other hunters, I decided to crawl up the slope and take a peak. Apparently great minds really do think alike. When my eyes topped the ridge, the gobbler, which had reached the same conclusion regarding the standoff that I had, was less than a yard away. At least I managed to get back across the creek and up the bank without falling down. I didn’t make any more bonehead plays the rest of the second week of the season. I decline to speculate whether that was because of my wising up or to the sad fact that I didn’t have any more chances to mess up. I have another farm on which I can hunt turkeys. A friend of mine who’s an excellent turkey hunter also hunts there. When I talked to him the last day of the season’s second week, he told me he hadn’t fired a shot. So much for Plan B. With only a little encouragement from a rain-soaked access road, when Monday of the last week of the season arrived, I ran up a white flag and surrendered the battlefield to the turkeys. It’s been a long time since I’ve had to eat a spring turkey tag, but I think I still have the recipe around somewhere. gjsa@sbcglobal.net

Poison-Related Fatalities On The Rise
(NAPS)—Poisoning is now the leading cause of injury death, surpassing even motor vehicle accident fatalities, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This increase is due mostly to a surge in drug-related poisonings, with drugs causing nine out of 10 poisonings. Unintentional Poisonings Can Happen to Anyone Poisonings can happen to anyone, from children to seniors and everyone in between. Many people think that the Poison Help line, 1-800-222-1222, which connects callers to their local poison center, is only for emergencies involving kids, but that isn’t true. Poison centers not only provide treatment advice, they also answer questions about plants, mushrooms, bites and stings from insects, spiders, reptiles and marine life, herbal and dietary supplements, food poisoning and substances of abuse. Dangers at Home Take a look around your home. You may be surprised to learn that the leading substances involved in poisonings reported to poison centers are right in front Poisoning deaths are on the rise—learn of you. Potential poisons include how to protect your family. over-the-counter medicines, cosmetics, household cleaning products and prescription medications. But don’t worry, there are simple ways to better poisonproof your home. Simple Steps to Prevent Tragedy There are steps you can take to protect you and your family: • Follow child-resistant packaging instructions and lock medicines up, away and out of sight. • Read medicine labels and follow their instructions. • Talk to your doctor and pharmacist if you have any questions about safe medicine dosage and usage. • Do not share prescriptions. • Never mix household or chemical products together. • When in doubt, call the Poison Help line, 1-800-222-1222, which connects you to your local poison center. You do not have to have an emergency to call. Post the number by your home phone and program it into your cell phone for easy access. A Valuable Resource When you call the Poison Help line, about 70 percent of poisonings can be taken care of over the phone, saving unnecessary trips to the hospital or doctor’s office. Poison centers are staffed by nurses, pharmacists, doctors and other specially trained poison experts, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Calls are free and confidential. Help is available in over 160 languages. Services are also available for the hearing impaired. To learn more, visit www.PoisonHelp.hrsa.gov, which is available in English and Spanish.
